May dear Jess be at peace. I have just read what happened with horror. All my thoughts are with you.

I just read the article and the word scum is too good for this thing. My heart goes out to Jess's owners. I am just so very sorry you have had to endure this. A wonderful painting of Jess. Rest in peace little girl, run at the bridge and go play with my kitty Binky. She loves puppy dogs. xx

Thanks Jarvis Cocker - it is great to see that Jess's legacy is helping other rescue dogs into homes in the area.

Gary Marshman.... I have just clocked his photo on FB. What a nasty piece of work he looks just as i expected he would. Afraid that 6 months is no way enough for this despicable act of cruelty. I hope that jess may now rest in peace and her family can now move on and still have fond memories of their times spent with Jess. RIP in Rainbow Bridge Jess xx

he is an absolute pointless/worthless piece of scum , a total waste of space, the amount of hatred for him is phenomenal. He will have a s...t rest of life,as he is the type, a real loser.

Thank goodness, this piece of s++t has been sent down, i only pray to god he gets what he deserves in prison. I hope this news gives Jess' family some comfort. Keep running free at the bridge sweetheart x x

Just seen the news about Jess in the Paper, its made national news, all the guys at work here was talking about it when i clocked they were talking about Jess ! ( and they are really angry at this scumbag, really you should hear what some of them are saying what they wanna do to this scum ) 6 months is no way near enough, but at least its something, and i hope the dog lovers inside give him hell.. I really feel for Jess's owners over losing this beautiful girl, but least he is now behind bars not hurting any other animal. Last edited: 2010-09-07 10:26:58 by ellejay

Sable thanks for letting us know the 'good' news and I agree with you Spindle (& expect all of us will feel the same), 6 months is nowhere near long enough for what this vile person did to beautiful Jess and her family but we can only hope others get to hear what he did and that there's some animal lovers amongst them! Thinking of Jess's owners and hope that this gives them a little comfort.

Words failed me when I first read this when Jess went missing and they still fail me now. How anyone who is remotely akin to a human being can do what this scum did is totally behond me. I just hope he gets a custodial sentance. Jess is safe playing at the bridge and no one can harm her now. My thought are with Jess's owner, this must be so painful for him.

If - and sadly it's a big if - he gets a custodial sentence - I truly hope he finds himself banged up in a cell with a crim that happens to love dogs - and justice is served that way. A slap on the wrist is not enough for such an evil lowlife.

This just makes me sick to even think about what poor Jess went through. I just hope he gets what he deserves and that is locking up and the key thrown away - which still wouldnt be enough. That poor dog. I just hope people now see this disgusting piece of scum on facebook as when you look at him on there he looks like the sort of person who shouldnt be allowed to walk on our streets. I just hope someone then gets his mobile number which is on there and gives a piece of what he deserves. Rest in peace Jess you will never be forgotten sweetheart. X

Well done everyone for bringing this piece of lowlife to justice - if there is any, for committing such a heinous crime. Whatever punishment he is given, it is not enough. It can never make up for the pain and distress the owner suffered and Jess suffered at the hands of this scum. STORY BELOW. MAN CONVICTED OF STEALING PET DOG A 27-year-old Bradford man has been found guilty of stealing a pet dog which died after being thrown off a viaduct. Gary Marshman, of Buttershaw, had previously denied any involvement in the death of the 12-year-old arthritic dog, called Jess. But magistrates in Dewsbury yesterday convicted him of stealing Jess (pictured), who was taken from outside Tesco in Northgate, Cleckheaton. Her 77-year-old owner, Ron Bisby (above), had left her tied up while he was shopping at the store in January last year. Marshman was seen on CCTV leading the dog away across the store’s car park. Jess was thrown 60 feet off a viaduct and was found dead two days later in the River Spen. A single white hair was found on Marshman’s jacket and it was confirmed as a DNA match for the family pet. Marshman will be sentenced at a later date.

He won't get what he deserves, that's for sure. Let's face it, the police (and some of the public, I'm afraid) do not take dog crime, or missing dogs, seriously. There's a state of near-hysteria if a child disappears, but these innocent, trusting dogs are just as precious to their owners. It's high time the law was tightened, and attitudes changed.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It was really nice to speak to you too Jan. A stone mason is donating the plaque and Mr and Mrs Bisby have decided they would like it put up at a particular spot where Jess was most happy, its a bridge over Westgate on the Greenway, a lovely idea.
The memorial fund will be going towards a bench with a plaque on for Mr and Mrs Bisby's garden, somewhere for them to sit and remember Jess, a rose bush is also being bought for the garden. Mrs Bisby has indicated that she would like one called 'Special Anniversary', Natalie, who is dealing with the memorial fund is trying to purchase one of these bushes. Well done for working so hard with the fund Nat x

I have read the posts for poor Jess everyday.  I have shed so many tears, like so many of you have too.  But to read how much support is being offered and provided is really wonderful. My heart goes out to Jess’ owners who must be so heartbroken to not only have lost her, but in a most sadistic way. I am a great believer in "what goes around comes around".  The evil vermin that did this will get his come upperance. Truth is no-one knows if the person the police arrested and released is the right man.  We all want the correct person punished for this and as far  as I can tell, the investigation is ongoing. Can I suggest that a letter is sent - it would have to be from Jess's owners, but I am sure there is someone out there who could assist - to the superintendent at the station where the investigation is being held, requesting details of the arrest and release.  Jess's owners are entitled to know what led police to arrest him and then to release him.  Unless he is charged, his name should not be released.  Also, his release does not mean he is not being investigated further. If the evidence seems strong and it appears inexplicable why he was not charged (a solicitor would need to decide this), then another option would be a civil action against the person.  Worth considering - I am currently looking into doing this with regard to my Sissy - police charged the thief, with strong evidence (car number plate and puppy sitting in her living room), and then dropped the case the week before the trial. I really do think that it will only be a matter of time before the man in the cctv upsets someone that knows who he is and perhaps what he has done, then maybe Jess will get her justice.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There are over 12,000 people on the facebook group.that is the public.voters..have the politicians who make the laws been alerted?
MP, councillors after all they are public servants and with todays technology the public can voice their opinions.
The facebook group protesting about the MPs concealing their exspenses swayed the Prime Minister and they backed down.

Thats just it Sable, they need someone who saw him actually kill poor Jess, or at least saw him do something that they can prove led to her death, without that theres not much hope, and the coward won't admit what he's done. Unless of course, he's bragged about it, if he has then that person needs to step up like a decent human being would and shop him.

It's no surprise that people take the law into their own hands, when the law lets us all down so badly and so regularly. How on earth could this happen? What more evidence do they need? Hopefully he will get his "reward" for what he has done, one way or another. Anyway, there there is most likely someone out there who saw what he did, and is now willing to come forward as a witness.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I hope what I have heard about who this guy is is not true and just a rumour.  If it were true, it makes his actions even more evil.  Can I just ask that if anyone here gets hold of his name or any details about him before they are in the public domain that they do not post them on here or that the admins delete them asap, please.  We wouldn't want him to be able to claim a mistrial for any reason. SuzyB, I get where you are coming from but it actually really annoys me when people constantly come out with the "they could do it to children" line.  They have done it to a living, loving being.  That is enough.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I could be totally wrong but judging from his clothes and certain other aspects about his appearance, he doesn't actually look that young.  Certainly not a teenager. Despite her lack of mobility, Jess appeared willing to go with this man from the moment he untethered her and made no attempt to get away when her collar came off.  Could it be possible that it is someone the dog knows?  I know Jess was said to be particularly trusting (collies tend to be one extreme or the other in this). Anyway, that's the end of my Miss Marple bit.  I hope they catch this piece of waste soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well done everyone for your determination and perseverence to catch this perpetrator. Hope it happens soon. The Dogs Trust is a wonderful charity, who never put a healthy dog down. The reward has reached such a great amount, I just wonder if some of the small charities and dog pounds would be able to benefit. Some of the dogs, sitting in a cold concrete cell on death row, only need a move to a rescue kennel, while waiting for a new home. The rescue kennels cost money to house these poor dogs, which only comes from generous donations. How wonderful if Jess's legacy were to be saving many other dog's lives. There are lists a mile long of needy dog pounds and rescue charities which desperately need help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Someday we will understand the reason why any 'human' would do this but until then, we can only hope to continue educating and trust that people will see that the life of any animal or human is special.  My kindest regards to Jess's owners and I hope they will find it in their hearts to give another deserving dog a wonderful home with them.

I can understand that feelings are running high here but please can I remind everyone this is not a forum but its jess's blog page. We all want justice and believe it should come from the appropriate authorities. The work done  by all concerned dog owners in advertising what has happened will help us all to give the relevent info to the authorities and the high level of public outrage will hopefully result in the relevent authorities responding accordingly. Thank you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Don't want to add fuel to the flames so will be as brief as I can. We all need to working together, as we all are, to catch the culprit in a lawful manner but it is impossible to detatch yourself from the absolute horror of this case. The law will probably give him a slap on the wrist and of course everyone will be worried what someone like this will do next, maybe to another animal or maybe even a child. My heart bleeds for that poor dear dog and the only consolation the owners may have is that she is running free at Rainbow Bridge now, away from any lowlifes, but my heart breaks even more for her poor owners. What I am trying to say is yes, he will be dealt with within the law I am sure but these forums are for all us animal lovers to express their feelings and we shouldn't be discouraged from doing so. We are all intelligent people and expressing our feelings will not bring us down to this 'scumbags' level.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We need to put all personal feelings aside and not start to bicker between ourselves or anyone trying to do what they feel is the best way to try and catch the culprit.  This is a horrific case and feelings will run high. We need to act with in the law together in a manner that can only help catch this person.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I can't bring myself to find and watch the footage as I fear it will be the sort of thing that will upset me stay with me, but I join everyone else in hoping and praying that poor Jess had no ideas what was happening to her,, that her end was swift and that that piece of filth who took her gets it back in spadesLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've not posted on Jess's page but have been following this awful story and am as disgusted and angered as everybody else here.
I have created a group on Facebook about Jess's story with the CCTV footage. I have sent it to all my contacts and have asked them to do the same. Hopefully it will eventually reach that one person who can help.
RIP Jess, play at the Bridge now sweetheart xx

I don't know what to say.  I'm beyond words having seen that footage. I just don't understand the point.  Dogs are stolen for several reasons but mainly to be kept (for free) or sold on (for profit) but why take an elderly dog and when it was so apparent that the dog could not move at any pace, why not just give up and run off yourself? I hope they catch him.  I'm reminded of the CCTV footage of the guy in Tunbridge Wells giving a poor little Bichon Frise a vicious kicking and dangling it from its lead.  He was identified and caught.  Thankfully, in that instance, the dog was OK despite the ferocity of the attack. Poor Jess.  At least she had a happy 12 years.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am so sorry to hear of this tragic story.  RIP Jess xx.  To her elderley owner ~ when the hurt fades, you will have so many wonderful memories to treasure.  Lets hope the 'animal' (and that word is too good for him) is caught and that justice will be done.  You are in my thougths xx.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This morning on Calendar news i saw the brief story about this and they showed the cctv footage of the dog with the man running away. his clothes are quite distinctive. this should be posted everywhere and we need to name and shame the gut who took this poor little dog. xXxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The way the CCTV show him racing along with this poor elderly dog makes me wonder if she had heart failure but the vet report will tell us. So sick to do this as everyone says. Unfortunately there is someone injuring cats in Thorpe St Andrew Norwich too-yesterday the news reported one retruning minus its tail and now others are reporting disappearance and injuries so please be warned if you are a cat owner in this area. My thoughts are with the owners and I wish them so peace and closure by catching this individual. Nothing can make it right but finding and punishing him will be something. Lovely Jess is running free and out of all pain now-focus on this owners is the best I can think of.

There are no words to describe the abhorrence of the individual's crime and personality who did this to Jess, but I am certain they will be caught and punished. I only wish I was the judge when he comes up in court, because I would make sure the punishment fitted the crime, and more, for sure. God bless you sweetheart. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Great to hear that they have printed his picture in the paper. I pray that they will catch him. Would'nt it be wonderful if Tesco pinned it up on their notice board also. Nothing can help the owners heart-break at the moment, but at least a presecution would be justice for Jess.

There is a piece in the Telegraph & Argus today about Jess also a video of the thief running down the street with her, it is not very clear but  they seem to have a good description of him that somebody should recognize, the owner is 77 years old and had been walking Jess around Cleckheaton for years. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well, it just never ends does it, the lows that some people will go to. It is heartbreaking enough on this site when we read of a rainbow bridge victim, but when you read that this baby was actually taken from somewhere deliberately...words fail you. I know advice is do not tie dogs up outside shops, its a shame that is a sign of our society nowadays, what is wrong with an owner wanting to take their dog out with them during the day, they should be able to secure their dog without fear of some idiot removing it.... Thoughts are with owner, keep hold of the good memories x hope they catch and name and shame the person who took this precious little one. Keep us informed.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The police are looking into the theft and death of Jess, she is having a post mortem this afternoon and they have CCTV coverage of the man from outside Tesco and from outside Body & Soul, my friend from dog rescue has spoken to Calendar to see if they will show the footage of the man, she said they were shocked at the story and thinks that they will help, his picture will also hopefully be shown in th local papers, lets hope that somebody recognizes him and he gets what he deserves and more.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have some extremely sad news about Jess, she was found in the middle of Mann Dam, I do not know the circumstances of how she got there, other people who have posted on her page may have more information. I know that everybody on dog lost will feel as upset as I do about the theft of Jess and how her life ended. I do hope that the CCTV images clearly show the man that led her away and he can be traced by the police.     Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As she has been stolen you must get a CRIME No. from the Police.  Try and get some media coverage in any papers in the area, if you have any free papers try them.  Will not be able to do various size posters until later today as past midnight now.  Posters can be printed by selecting Dog Poster 1 just above Dog Information  but you must be logged in.   Good luck.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Posted 18.01.09 - *Spider* (who did the second registration) This is posted on behalf of a friend. This dog was stolen from outside a Tesco's at 6pm. There is CCTV that shows a middle aged man walking away with the dog. The picture of Jess is only a lookey likey, she is older looking with more black/grey markings. There is a reward for the safe return of a much loved dog. If anyone has any information, we are begging for information. ThankyouLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I hope the owner has got a crime number from the police. This is theft and such should be being treated as a crime. Make sure the police log it as such. I do hope she is found very soon...judy

Need to keep on at the police as well. Is there any more cctv that could be looked at to see which direction they went ? Any kind of picture from the cctv of the person taking her would be great to put on the posters as well. She needs to be made too hot to handle and then hopefully she will be returned. Great that she is tagged and chipped. Maybe a small reward could be offered to encourage people ? (I realise that may not be possible obviously). Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When I spoke to the T&A in Bradford before about featuring a possibly stolen dog they were very unhelpful, but still worth trying local papers as it's definitely a theft. Need plenty of posters around Cleckheaton to get peoples attention. It's so frustrating seeing dogs time after time being left outside shops unattented. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have been asked to put this dog on Dog Lost, an elderly man tied it up outside Tesco in Cleckheaton and it was missing when he came back, Tesco played back the CCTV and saw a man untying it and leading it away, the Police have been informed. The dog has a collar with a tag on and is chipped, she is described as a black & white border collie type is 12 years old and quite frail, the owner is devastated,Virginia at Cleckheaton Pet Shop has got more details I will go and see her tomorrow and see if I can get a photo of the dog to put on site.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry to see Jess is missing.  Thanks for registering her details on DL, we will do all we can to help you in your search.   Great you have supplied a similar photo.  You need to poster poster poster the area as much as possible and make her TOO HOT TO HANDLE.  Posters can be printed by selecting Dog Poster 1 just above Dog Information (you must be logged in).  As she has been stolen you must get a CRIME No. from the Police.  Try and get some media coverage in any papers in the area, if you have any free papers try them. Contact DW's, rescues, vets and leave a poster (you can find vets in the area by clicking on the logo right hand side just underneath Latest Missing photo).  Dogs can be rehomed after 7 days, try and visit rescues do not rely on phone calls alone.   Please update on who has been contacted, DW's etc and if you have started postering.  You can leave a comment by selecting  Add a comment  just above Comments.  Good luck and hope she is found soon.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
