I would advise to continue leaving small amounts of food regularly late evening at the picnic site/car park where she was sighted and at any adjacent ones. She seems to be managing somehow, she appeared after people had thought she cannot still be with us, and if so she won't have gone all that far.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yoshiko - what a shame. Hopefully BBQ weather again this weekend? I phoned Last Chance today as they have a ten year old lab/collie cross girl in (no pic). I was hoping they may have Tally (& not recognised the breed after two months living rough), but no joy - this lovely girl was brought in by her family who were emigrating. I went there tonight and put some dog food down. My daughter had the grand idea to go there and have a bbq, maybe Tally will be attracted by the smell. If the weather is dry we will do that tomorrow evening. Anyone cares to join us?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nik - hopefully that will get the children asking their parents to help look for Tally. We met a family out yesterday walking the lanes. The young girl mentioned seeing a poster when we told them what we were doing. Yoshiko - it can't do any harm leaving dog food, can it? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went there with my dogs, but had no luck either. I left some dog food in the little shelter and thought about leaving some every evening. I know there is always the chance of foxes eating it, but Tally might find it and might visit the "shelter" a regularly to check. Worth a try.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went down yesterday but no joy. Nigel - my suggestion would be for you to visit each house between your own and Gorse Cottage, with poster details etc. Obviously there's posters around, but I guess there may be some people in the area who get in their cars at home and drive to where they're going and may not have seen them. If everyone made an effort to search for Tally (or evidence she'd been there) then maybe you'll get a sighting or two? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Black Retriever X Rescue
Jemima here from the yahoo group fortheloveofflatcoats. We lost Tickle, one of our dogs, a few months ago. On the advice of a well-respected dog-catcher, I went and set up camp in my Peugeot estate car one night near where she had been seen and sprinkled my pee all around the car (hope no one was watching...!). I also had Tickle's friend, Boz, with me as a lure. I felt a bit mad to be honest, but settled down in a sleeping bag with the boot open. It took Tickle only 10 mins to appear, after five days on the run, presumably lured by that irresistable aroma! If you haven't already done this it is DEFINITELY worth a try. Went up Chuck Hatch Lane to Pooh Bridge area but this is just the edge of such a vast area for her to be hiding up in, some of which is fenced off for wildlife conservation. There are still some notices (not on sight from road - as forest rangers were taking them down) + I added a few more. Unfortunately didn't see many people but the couple of dog walkers I saw had seen the notices and knew about her and they will pass the word around of possible sighting and took few small leaflets. Some nice ramblers took couple of notices and pins to put up posters on their route. So fingers crossed this is Tally and she shows herself again. SandraLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Tally's Family
Got a potential sighting in Chuck Hatch Lane, near us, yesterday 10/7. Lady rang as her 13 yo daughter saw a black dog outside Gorse Cottage at about 4pm. Did not tell her mother till 5.00pm who phoned me. Went and searched and called but no sign of Tally. I spoke with the young lady and the description sounded a good match - large black dog, greying muzzle, looked thin, somewhat dishevelled coat, seemed confused. Friends of theirs who visit have flat coat so she was sure it was one (the family have a golden retriever). Frustrating as they could have caught her as she was not running away! It is near the car park that people use to visit Pooh Sticks Bridge and apparently quite a few picnic there and leave food and rubbish (there are no bins), so it might be a source of food. If you go to Ordnance Survey http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap and then Get-a-Map, search Chuck Hatch you will see the area.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Very sorry there's been no more sightings. Don't give up hope though Nigel - I've read on this site of some happy reunion stories where the dogs have been living rough for a while. When we were down last weekend looking for her we managed to stay relatively dry as there's lots of tree cover so hopefully she'll have found herself a nice den somewhere. We have not had any more potential sightings of any Tally-like dogs. I have alerted the owners of Pippingford Manor who own a huge tract of land just SW of us that includes an army training area. Weather has been ghastly, continual rain. Unless someone has taken her in, we are not sure that she will have survived. Still hoping though.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There was a sighting of a black dog wandering on the A22 a mile or so South of Forest Row (near Chelwood Vachery and the entrance to Pippingford for the locals) mid last week. The lady is sure it was a flat coat. That is not far from us and she could get there quite easily cross country.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, we think that the sightings around the Royal Ashdown Golf Course and private roads in Forest Row have turned out to be a red herring. There are at least 2 black labs that wander about in that area and we have concluded that the sightings we had reported are black labs and NOT Tally.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We spent a few hours today looking for Tally. Looked under hedges etc to see if she may have made herself a den somewhere. No joy, no sign whatsoever. Saw lots of posters, and left one in a notice board that was open near Tally's home. Such a vast area of forest so there's lots of hiding places. Also noticed on one poster that Tally had a red tartan collar on when she went missing. The rain has got into some of the poster bags, but the numbers were visible in all we saw. Come home soon Tally!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Update on sightings: Nigel called me this morning, and explained that all sightings turned out to be red herrings except for a couple of sightings of a black dog on the run around 3 and 4 a.m. the night Tally went missing. These were to the south of her home. But a new sighting has just been reported of a flatcoat crossing a road west of the A22 near Chelwood Vachery a couple of days ago. This is to the SW of her home.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What helpers in the area need to be doing now is continue their efforts in the area round Tally's home, paying special attention to anywhere a dog who is feeling tired and unwell may be resting up. Ask everyone to check under hedges and bushes, in sheds and barns, everywhere like that. We are all extra concerned about this dog now, so if anyone is within reach of the area and can help search, please contact Tally's family whose contact numbers are further down this thread. Thank you. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spoke to owner today there have been no more sightings and the builders are only there at weekends. They have left food and familiar items in area and will keep checking. Vets, rescues, wardens etc. etc have been re contacted. Leaflets are going to be left on as many car windscreens as poss in car parks on Ashdown Forest close to Colemans Hatch and Chuck Hatch over the weekend. She has now been without her thyroid treatment for 3 weeks and are worried how lethargic and slow she may have become. Come on Tally show yourself - your family are working very hard to find you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We had a tentative, possible sighting yesterday 19/6. A man saw a black dog in the garden of the next door house on Chuck Hatch Lane, quite near us in Colemans Hatch. The house is being renovated, so no-one living there, so he thought it was strange (he made the connection because he read the article we have had written in last Thursdays 14/6 East Grinstead Courier). I'm going to talk to the builders today.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nigel - so sorry Tally is still missing. It's possible of course that Tally is a bit thinner than she was in the photos you have, so people may have trouble identifying her. When I saw a missing dog last year I couldn't be sure that she was the same one as went missing on doglost, even though the owners sent me quite a few pictures. When we found her (a few days after I'd seen her on the loose) I realised it was definitely the dog I'd seen before, but the stray dog was scared and skinny (backed off when I tried to coax her to me), unlike the happy healthy dog I'd seen in the photos. If you have time to update this site every few days it would help keep everyone focused on finding her - particularly if there's a sighting or two. Good luck, really hoping you're reunited soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for all your support and kind thoughts. We have focussed our efforts on the Forest Row area as we had a number of sightings of 'a black dog' there. However, I've visited several of the 'sighters' with pictures of Tally and it seems now that most were probably sightings of Black Labs, not a Flat Coat. The Pro at the Royal Ashdown Golf Club has a black lab that has free run of the area and I think that it is mostly this dog that is being seen. We have had no sightings since last Thursday. Very depressing. I'm phoning back round the vets, dog wardens, police and rescue centres/kennels. I actually rescued a black lab, called Coco, that I found whilst looking for Tally by the golf course. He had a tag and was from Rystwood Road, Forest Row. He had being missing for an hour or so. Took him to the local vet used by the owners.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just had a chat with Nigel, Tally's owner. He's having problems registering to the site, but will hopefully do so later and update this page. There have been a few sightings in the Dale Road/Chappell Lane/Highgate Road area of Forest Row so Nigel's going back up there with more posters etc. now. He also said that posters were being put up in the Forest every night but being ripped down by the foresters, unfortunately. A significant point to mention is that Tally is on thyroid pills twice a day, so may be very tired now - she really needs to be home and getting her medicine. A couple more contact numbers to add to the home number - Nigel Mob 07899 84 88 35 and his wife Hilary's Mob 07802 380 516. Hopefully any local volunteers can help to finally track Tally down.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We made an unplanned visit to this area today, so didn't have posters with us. However we saw NO posters (stopped at a couple of car parks on the edge of the forest overlooking the golf course and also at a bus stop where we saw poster for missing cat). Mentioned Tally to people we met who had clearly not seen any posters. Such a big area she could be hiding anywhere. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just put some copies of the poster in the mail to the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, just in case it hasn't been done.Shirley. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Does anyone know if the Ashdown Forest Centre and wardens have been notified of Tallys situation? ShirleyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Any news / sightings of this girl. I will send Tally's and Milo's details to vets, kennels, rescues etc. etc. over the weekend. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

OK I removed some of the welcome home messages. The confusion was my fault - 2 separate flatcoats went missing in SE England, and the other one got home before she went up on site. Tally is still definitely missing. Apologies to everyone.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just spoken to the owner. Poor Tally definitely still missing. A couple of local sightings on the golf course - Saturday 2nd and Monday 4th. Have posted details to a couple of flatcoat groups I'm on. Jayne - is it worth deleting the 'welcome home' messages to save confusion? Hope she comes home soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Although we live a little away from the forest in Heathfield, I will keep a lookout as I work adjacent to the forest and know how you are feeling as we are still looking for our dog that went missing on the 8th May near our home. Hope tally is home very soon. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
