Nicolapicola you have done your very best for this dog well done for caring so much.Lets hope that Oscar remains safe & sound from now on and well fed x

Due to several near accidents and some people getting agitated on facebook, I was told that "the dog warden has been contacted and is coming to get the dog" - Oscar was at the time round again, playing happily with my dog. I therefore passed another message round to the cricket club executive same day. It turned out that the facebook people were not, in fact, in contact with the dog warden at all but with Shelagh our local doglost volunteer (which is somewhat of a relief to me). Shelagh knocked on my door next morning and we went round together to the cricket club and spoke to the owner. He had already confined Oscar to barracks, having been spoken to again by his employers and is adamant that Oscar will not be allowed to stray again, so case closed, I think.

This little dog, whose name is Oscar, is still regularly straying and other people have now noticed and started asking about him. He came over to visit my dog this morning and they gambolled about for half an hour together. I offered him some food but he is not hungry so maybe thin for some other reason. He is a happy little dog although he should not be wandering across roads by himself. Today my neighbour told me that a facebook group have got agitated about him and got the WF dog warden out looking for him. I have told the person who told me this (who is in touch with the dog warden) where he comes from and asked them to tell the warden. However, I think the warden would find it impossible to catch him as he runs like the wind and would just run back home. I am told that if the DW gets him, he intends taking him back to the owner and talking to him about it. I do hope this is so.

Mystery solved. I met a local dogwalker and showed him the dog's pic on my 'phone. This little dog is called Oscar and belongs to the groundsman at the cricket ground and "gets out sometimes". I was advised to speak to a nearby neighbour who is on the committee of the cricket club and he confirmed this. I told him I thought Oscar very thin and always met him desperately looking for something to eat; also that he has little road sense and keeps running into the road when he is scared of passing someone on the pavement he is travelling on. It was clear neither he nor the dogwalker had thought he was hungry but the man said he would speak to the groundsman and tell him the dog had been getting out "again"! and I think he was going to pass on my concerns. I think the trouble with having a long wiry coat is that the thin body doesn't show up so clearly. If poor Oscar is indeed adequately fed, I can't imagine why he is so desperately searching for food constantly when he is out and eating anything vaguely like food he finds on the ground.

I've seen him twice more. Today we encountered him eating some unidentified substance off the top of my cul-de-sac. He accompanied us on our walk all the way round, at one point leading us up to the entrance to the cricket ground, which the public are not allowed into. I am still suspicious he lives in there. He is very sprightly and I did not have any food with me. He seems quite happy but is definitely too thin. I think I'll build up his trust and try to leave some food on his circular route about the right time so at least he gets something to eat. He wouldn't come home with me and my dog although he thinks she is wonderful.

Thanks for your comments, folks. I don't think I will be able to catch him, though if we meet him again and I can slip him some food from a distance, we may slowly get a more trusting relationship. My aim is to find out where he comes from and get the RSPCA onto this. My thoughts are that he belongs either to an uncaring person or perhaps an elderly person who does not realise they are underfeeding him. He has managed to remain alive in these circumstances for at least 18 months so I guess they give him something. I will try postering the roads where I've seen him and see if anyone has any info. Unfortunately, the information I've already given makes it not too difficult to track me down so I hope I don't get any hostile owner coming my way! Thanks, Shelagh - I was wondering about how I'd get him scanned if I got that near.

THE STRAY DOG IS THE ONE ON THE RIGHT - the other is mine. I have seen this dog on 3 or 4 occasions in last 2 years in this area. He usually runs in and out of front gardens looking for food. He is very nervous and usually if he sees me and my dog (or anyone at all) he turns tail and flees but today they fell in love. This is the closest I have ever got to him and I am fairly sure most other dogowners around have never set eyes on him as he is fairly clever at being unnoticed. He is very thin and when a big vehicle passed him on the road he cowered down to the ground. I very much want to report his owner to the RSPCA but am hampered by not knowing where he lives. I am suspicious he is kept tied up somewhere as he was unhappy when he saw me clipping my dog to her outside rope (she lives inside most of the time). I tried to give him some food and he stopped and looked back at me but was too scared and left. For those who are local, I have seen him at least twice in Faversham Avenue very early in the morning. When surprised, he runs back along to the short footpath at the end into Kimberley Way that goes round part of the cricket ground (wondered if he came from there as someone lives in the pavilion). He is very fast and I've never been able to see where he goes. I've also seen him coming from the forest into my road (The Copse), again early morning, and scavenging along the front of our flats. Today he was in Forest Side, just down from the pub (Queen Elizabeth). He is wearing two collars - not very nice ones and I can see his ribcage and spine through his wiry coat so he is definitely underweight. Lovely dog.
