Jess,I drove past this dog very slow, the road as you know is very narrow, and I was scared the dog would run into the road,it looked all black to me and couldn't see the colour of collar but it was a bone tag.The fields all around where I saw it were totally waterlogged and muddy.so not necessarily in a hole, but struggling to walk through mud.it was app 9.30 am when spotted on my way to fairford with my teenage son.He wanted the dog to be safe,so we stopped and he crouched down, the dog was clearly lost and very scared.he carefully crept further, but the dog kept running away, the stopped and turned around to look at us,several times. In the end it went back into the muddy field and when I came back about half an hou later,I could not see it,but there were hedges and I was driving,it was spotted about half way between the first houses of castle eaton and the A419

If it is a terrier caked in mud it could have been stuck in a hole somewhere and now managed to emerge. Hope it is caught soon and reunited.
