Hello all. Just a word of warning really. We collected Harvey's body and had him cremated. His ashes will be scattered in the Cromford Canal, his favourite walk. The whole situation is very fishy though, something definitely amiss with it all really.

Harvey was lost on the 11th April and his body was found on the 24th April. 13 days - 2 weeks give or take. The vet confirmed that he was hit by a vehicle and the chances were that he would have been killed outright by the incident. However, she also confirmed that he had only been dead for between 24-48 hours. The woman who found him walks her dog down the same route every other day and his body was not there on any of the previous occasions she walked by there.

So doing the maths... he must have been "running around" for around 11-12 days "lost". This is the funny thing though... when we collected his body he looked well fed, no mud, no dirt, no bracken, no sticky buds and his wool looked as though it had been brushed. Anyone who knows a poodle's coat will know just how much upkeep they need to be clean and knot free. He definitely did not display the signs of a dog that had been lost in the wilderness, living rough, for the time that he had been lost. The other thing is that his body was only found 2 MILES away from where he originally disappeared from. 2 miles is not a very big distance for a dog to cover in over 10 days! He was also spotted by no-one in the area - police, wardens, cafes, vets, locals and us during the numerous times that we searched for him.

It is too late for Harvey, however, something just didn't feel right, we "think" that it is very possible that he was stolen and was being looked after. It was VERY unlike Harvey to go missing in the first place! The whole thing did not feel right. He then either escaped a few days later or was let loose (as he is neutered possibly?) and then hit on the road by the vehicle (that never stopped or called). He was found with his collar and tag on. We will never know, but I think it is worth sending a possible warning out to all dog owners in this area - it could happen again.

Thanks.
Kyle.

Good morning all. I just wanted to thank you for all of the contact and your efforts with trying to help us find Harvey. Unfortunately, we had a call from a local woman last night who found Harvey yesterday. He was found at the side of the A6, deceased. He had been hit by a vehicle it seems. She saw that he was wearing a collar with a tag and rang the phone number on the tag and managed to get through to us. We are going down today to meet with the woman and recover Harvey's body, so that we can bury him. The A6 is very close by to where he was being walked, so the chances are that he was killed soon after being lost. Extremely upsetting, but at least we now have some closure and comfort in knowing what had happened to him. Thanks again.

Thank you.
Best Regards,
Kyle and Andy.

Thank you SaffySP.

I've run from the Cromford-end carpark, along the towpath for 3 miles and back again tonight and had a good look around as I went, but no sign of Harvey I'm afraid. Unfortunately I didn't have any posters with me as I went straight there from work and I didn't notice any along the towpath or at the carpark. I hope someone hasn't taken down the ones Harvey's owners put up originally. I'll take some with me the next time I go, but I won't be able to get back there for a few days.

Hi Owl, the towpath is only about 5 miles long, so I guess he could have also got off at either end. My big concern is that a railway line and the A6 road run not far from the towpath for quite a portion of it :(
DogLostOwl
If a dog gets on to a towpath he can go quite a distance, and is likely to find leftover food along the way. I would advise to get posters up and down the towpath for several miles. The fact that Harvey doesn't like water should keep him out of the canal but not off the towpath.
SaffySP
Just to let you know that I'm down in that area again this evening, so will have a good look round!

I notice he was lost on the 11th. I ran along Cromford Canal and back with my 2 dogs on the 14th, but no sign of any dogs looking like Harvey. Have any posters been put up at the Rugby Club or around the cafe/car park at the Cromford end of the canal, as I don't recall seeing any when I was there? A lot of people start walking from that car park and it's only about a mile away from High Peak Junction. The Rugby Club is even nearer. Hope you find him soon xx

Owner is contacting the Highways Agency and Railtrack. He has checked sites on the internet and contacted the DW and local vets. He will be contacting the chip company. He has also postered. Harvey is not a dog to run off.
