Hi, I know it's a long shot but I always hope that you will find Bertie alive and well. This dog was found in Naburn, chipped but details not up to date. Obviously Bertie would be older now so would look slightly different to pictures. Worth a look hopefully?

Hello, no news I'm afraid. Bertie has now been missing for 3 years and 8 months with no sightings. We think he must have been killed by a train (see below post from Nov 2013). But thank you for asking - its touching that people still remember him.

:( :( :( Poor Bertie, it doesn't look good but there is always a possibility that he was picked up by someone and they had thrown his ID tag away. If he is nearby I hope he can be found xx

Taken from Bertie's facebook page. have sent a text to Mike xx
"Dear Followers of "Find Bertie". Some potentially very worrying news. Fragments of Bertie's collar (buckle & bone shaped ID tag) have been found today in long grass by a lady who was searching for a lost phone. It was found only a few hundred yards away from the house that he escaped from back in April and, worryingly, only 20 metres or so from railway lines. This means that the possible sightings of him in Skirpenbeck, Bugthorpe etc in the summer were a different dog(s). The name tag and buckle were quite rusty suggesting they'd been there for some time. This doesnt look good."Last edited: 2013-11-17 22:17:19 by Minigirl - Area Co-ordinator, West Yorkshire

Taken from Bertie's facebook page

POSS SIGHTING OF BERTIE. Received a call tonight from a lady who saw, on 28th August (approx 1pm), a brindle whippet type dog with a brown collar in the village of Skirpenbeck near Stamford Bridge. The dog was unaccompanied and was kicking his back legs (as if he'd just been to the loo!). This lady lives in Skirpenbeck and knows all of the local dogs and she said she'd never seen this dog before. She says it was def a Whippet type (rather than Ghound size). Skirpenbeck is only 2-3 miles away from the place of the last poss sighting (Scrayingham). The lady read an article about Bertie today in the Stamford Bridge local link magazine and realised it was the dog that she had seen. I feel this is a very credible sighting and I'll be going out tomorrow to put some posters up in the villages around that area. The lady said the dog looked ok.
Mike
Hi Steph - thanks for that news about the two dogs at D'caster. I've emailed them tonight, with a copy of Bertie's poster, asking if either dogs looks like him. cheers Mike

There is the Darley estate with large woodlands around Scrayingham and Buttercrambe, and Aldby Park where the owner lives, also the Halifax/Garrowby estate which has extensive woodlands. There is a vet not far from Scrayingham in Stamford Bridge, Battle Flatts 01759 371066 if they have not yet been contacted.

Thanks Carol and sidney.
What is the name of the estate?

Following the recent publicity a possible sighting has been reported. Taken from bertie's facebook page" About a month ago, she saw a dog who matches Bertie's description (brindle, whippet type, brown collar) running free on the road between Stamford Bridge and Scrayingham. She stopped her car and tried to get it to come to her but it was too nervous. She describes herself as an experienced dog owner and knows the difference between Greyhound/Lurcher types and Whippet and states that this was def. a whippet type dog. She also said the collar was a wide leather one - and Bertie was wearing a whippet collar when he went missing. So now off up to that area to put up some posters and later will ring Farmers around there."
Have spoken with Bertie's owners who have plans in place and we have discussed areas to target for posters and calls.
Really hope for more news of him
Xx
Steph
Could Bertie be one of the dogs on this list? Even if the found site isn't local, you never know. Fingers crossed!

Thank you Riverlady.
Thank you so much Sue- will let Bertie's owners know.
They are missing him so much.
One of their children has written this poem about him.

Maddy, aged 7, has written a poem about him:
Bouncing Bertie is my dog
Everytime he poked me with his nose I laughed
Running everywhere on the dog walk
Tearing up his bed all the time
I jump up and down and smile because he is so cute
Even though he bites my toys I still love him and want him home.

Really hoping for news of him

Two leads tonight. First was a call from a lady called Nikki who had seen a picture of dog v similar in looks to Bertie who had been found in Darlington. Have seen a picture and although markings look similar this dog seems a bit bigger that Bert and slightly different shaped head.

More encouraging though was a very credible sighting THIS MORNING of a dog matching his description running free near fields at the far end of Usher Lane in Haxby by a young lass riding her horse. That would only be 1-1.5mile from where Bertie went missing from. Been out in the area tonight calling him but no luck. Going out again tomorrow morning.
Mike
Yes that's right - it was about 1/2 mile from where I live.
I went out last night putting leaflets through doors in the area where he went missing from and planning to do so again today. I've also notified some of the Sighthound/Whippet rescue orgs, the Local Auth dog wardens from elsewhere in Yorkshire (e.g. Leeds, Doncaster,Scarborough, Hull etc) and the York Travellers Trust as well - but still no definite news or sightings.

Mike- just looked on the map. Am I right in thinking this possible sighting is towards home?

Bumped Bertie's page for possible sighting.

Mike
Possible sighting. A man called us to say that he was travelling on the No.1 bus when he saw two men with a whippet type dog next to the River Foss near to the Huntington/New Earswick Link Road that looked similar to Bertie. I've been out to have a look - no sign of them but reassuring to know that the publicity is working.
Minigirl - Area Co-ordinator, West Yorkshire
Sorry to hear that.
Had an email back from the Inspector of the NPT She has kindly agreed to circulate Bertie's details.
Really hope the newspaper article brings information.
debbie, thank you for checking, with the timings and distance am not sure that dog ID 50777 would fit, but will aim to get more details.

Mike- have sent the finder a copy of Bertie's poster to look at- I didn't text you in case it was too late.Have also asked her if the found dog is male or female.
Will post on here/ text you if she replies to the message.
Mike
Thanks to minigirl, trish and riverlady for your support. Thanks also to Shellytyas for the note about the dog in Barnsley. I'm trying to contact the lady who posted the original note on Fbook, though sadly, looking at the picture I don't think its our Bertie (this other dogs face looks a little whiter/older) - but you never know.

There have been no reported sightings yet of Bertie since he went missing.
His owners have returned early from their holiday to search for him.

When he went missing Bertie was wearing a collar and ID tag and he is Microchipped.
They have informed all the relevant authorities and flagged him up as missing with the microchip company.
Advice given on scenting.

Sorry to see that BERTIE is missing.
  • If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
  • Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
  • A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (50809)
  • Obtain a missing poster by clicking on View poster above. Posters are very important so start postering now!
  • You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
  • Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
  • If your dog has been stolen inform the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number (CRN). Send an email to stolen@doglost.co.uk.
  • If your dog is picked up and taken to rescue kennels, it can be legally re-homed after seven days. Visit rescue centres in person and do not rely on checking by phone alone. Other people may not recognise your dog by your description, so give them a DogLost poster.
  • Keep us updated by keeping your dog's page up to date and check for posts from helpers who may have suggestions and possible matches or sightings
