Oh no, how sad. I'll never forget that day we went looking for her Clare. My husband was none too pleased about his car coming home looking like it had been rallying. He couldn't get the dirt off it for days, but it was so worth it, otherwise we might never have found out about Donna living on the landfill site. Run free at the bridge darling Donna, and thank you to Ray for bringing her in from the cold and showing her the love she so deserved xx

Sadly I have to tell any the followers of the lovely Donna (Miss ex Calvert Landfill) that in this past month she was PTS due to an on-going serious illness. It was thought that she might have been suffering from leukaemia and was never going to recover. I am sure you will all join me in thanking Ray D for trapping and eventually she was found a loving home where she enjoyed the trappings of a lovely life, better food and constant love and respect shown to her and not forgetting a lovely sofa to sit on. RIP Donna x

What a wonderful ending to what started out to be a sad story. I was also hoping that Ray would keep the lovely Donna as she clearly adores him. Well done to all concerned in what was quite an ongoing saga and to the wonderful Ray who has clearly worked so hard to catch her and win her over. So glad that Donna has a safe, comfortable home with the wonderful Ray. Ray caught a feral lurcher who had been living rough for about a year. After 3 months I couldn't catch her though she would even take food from my hand. Ray came along with his young daughter, Emma. On the second attempt they caught her. I named her Emma after Ray's daughter and she is living happily with me and my other dogs - and runs free and always comes back. Ray rocks!

Wonderful news. So pleased she has found her forever home with Ray. He does a fantastic job with animals. I had to phone once, as he is not too far from where I live, and found a very helpful, and friendly voice on the other end, and was given some very good advice for somethning. Hi Timmy's Mummy, I don't think she has. Ray telephoned me a little while ago and she has had numerous tests done at the vets to see why she wasn't gaining weight then. Nothing came back and is now starting to gain weight. He said he wouldn't let her go anywhere until he is completely happy with her physical state. If I hear anything more I will post on here.x

Hi All, quick update from Ray as he phoned me today on a personal matter, but Donna is doing really well. Only now beginning to put some weight on at long last after numerous tests at the vet and all have come back as normal. She is a great escape artist and always heads for settee in the Staff lounge! She certainly knows where she is comfy and best off! Wonderful news. xx

So pleased that Donna is doing well. I would have had her myself but I don't think that my three JRT's would have been very happy about it. I do so hope that this lovely dog finds a very good home, she so deserves it. I went on to Rays site to have a sneaky peek and it's absolutely amazing. Reading about the wonderful work that Ray and his wife does brought me to tears yet again! Where animals are concerned it doesn't take too much to set me off! Thank you Barney and Ozzies Mum and Merlinsmum. I still think of my last GSD Rommel who we lost 10 years ago, he'd suffered with epilepsy during his ten year life span, but thankfully we managed to control it for a few years so he had a great life. You can never replace them, but you can always love again.

My son had mentioned "Donna" to me just before Xmas, I assumed that she was a local farm dog but wish I had reported her sooner. Glad she is safe and well now , I'm sure she will make someone a lovely pet. Does anyone have any idea of her age, cos she looked like an older lady in her photo?

My hubbie and I rode through Calvert on our motorbike this afternoon. Couldn't help thinking about all those months poor "Donna" was living on the landfill site in the freezing cold weather. So pleased that Donna is doing well and ready for rehoming, such wonderful news and I'm so glad that I reported her on this wonderful site with all you caring people.

For info, both my Ruby and her mate Barney (who is still with us) are both rescue dogs, but not from here. Ruby came from Chiltern Dog Rescue Society, through my friend who's family is involved with the business. She was found somewhere in Wales, and had been rehomed briefly once before we got her at about 9 months old. She was the nicest, sweetest natured dog and was such a well behaved girl right to the end. Barney came from Longwick RSPCA about 6 weeks after we got Ruby, he was about 6 months and had been found wandering by the motorway. We will always rescue in the future, it has been so rewarding despite the inevitable sadness at the end.

Since I last posted I have lost my lovely Ruby to Hemangiosarcoma, spleen cancer. She suddenly became very poorly on Monday evening, we took her to the emergency vet who despite giving excellent care and treatment was unable to save her. Ruby died from internal bleeding due to rupturing of a tumour. We are devastated and my other dog, Barney is lost without his soulmate. I would urge anyone to rehome a rescue dog, for despite the sadness at the end of their lives, they give endless joy. At the moment I feel as though I could never go through this again, but I know I will always have a dog in my life. X

Thanks Claire. I expect there will also be some work to be done with her too, as in building up her confidence etc. It can take a while. I know when we rescued our Ruby, there was a beautiful black female GSD in the rescue centre who had been running wild for a while. She was almost panic stricken by human presence and the staff worked with her for a long time, before they were happy to re home her with very experienced GSD owners. X

As far as I am aware she is doing OK and has calmed down. I would think that any dog would have reacted in that way especially as they have been a stray for so long and always trying to safeguard their food supply such as it was! I wouldn't think to worry yourselves re rehoming her at this stage. I'm sure she still has to be "built" up a little more so i don't think there is a rush at this time. xx

Just because this dog is believed to have been abandoned by travellers, doesn’t mean they were the rightful/original owners, as is too often the case. Whatever happens next, let’s hope she gets lots of love which she obviously has been missing for some time. x

I'm not so sure that tracing her owners would be such a good idea C.J. After all they were believed to have been 'travellers', who apparently scarpered and left her to fend for herself. To add to that they clearly haven't put a lot of time or effort into finding her and getting her back, so in my opinion I think we had best forget about them !

She looks gorgeous, lovely dark eyes and muzzle. Older than I initially thought though. Bless her. My son was told by the other guys on the landfill not to approach her as she was vicious. Trouble is people often assume GSDs are vicious because they are large dogs and are used by the police and security services. She was obviously terrified though. Hope she soon finds a permanent home. X

This lady is beautiful, she does look very thin and her eyes are a bit wary but she looks very calm and I hope that she will soon be in a Forever Home if her previous home isn`t located.... someone is going to be very lucky indeed to have her in their life:-) Just goes to show what patience and teamwork can do, well done, I hope Woody and Teddy are soon in the warm and safe too.

Perhaps she seemed agressive at the landfill because she was hungry, cold and weak. They were obviously as kind as they could be at the landfill but any dog will seem aggressive if its been living rough for some time - to someone it doesnt really know.

Ah! She looks gorgeous although thin. She seems quite docile too. I was concerned that she might have been a bit 'wild' and aggressive but there doesn't seem any signs of that in the photo. Bless her, she's probably so happy to be in the warm with some nice food in her tummy!

Hi Steph I think Chiltern Dog Rescue is just up the road from me in Aston Hills towards Chesham I think they moved into a former kennels which were awful and that is being polite! I boarded my 2 former dogs one day only and when I got them out I thought never ever again and never did! I believe it has changed from those days as it is now a rescue and a few friends have had dogs from there.

Thank you both! I look forward to seeing her picture. Barney 'n' Ozzies mum, I too have a Barney and a Ruby as well, Barney is a pedigree GSD and Ruby is a Collie/GSD cross. Both were rescue dogs and were about 6 months old at the time, they are now about 10 years old. Barney was found near the M40 at Stokenchurch and taken to the RSPCA at Longwick, no one claimed him so we were the fortunate new mum and dad! Ruby was my Welsh Hill farmer :), found in Wales and we rescued her from Chiltern Dog Rescue, which used to be at the Lee and I believe has now moved to Chesham. My friends family are very heavily involved with CDRS, so that's how we knew about her.

I love my two to bits and feel so sad for all these people who have lost their pets. I would be devastated if I lost mine.

Hi Steph. We are all like one big family on here! Some of us have been helpers for years, but still get all emotional when something like this happens :) I am so grateful that you took the time to post the sighting on here. If you hadn't done that, this poor girl would most definetely still be out there in the cold! I too have previously owned a GSD, so this case particularly pulled on my heart strings. That is such wonderful news and I must offer my gratitude to all of you who have been working so hard to save her. I don't know any of you, nor have I met you but what a wonderful team of people you are. Would it have been Ray who left an answer phone message for me one day a couple of weeks ago? I am just so happy she is safe and will hopefully now lead a lovely life with someone. Is it possible that you could post a picture of her because all I saw was this poor thin dog running into the hedge. As a GSD owner for many years I would love to meet her, but I don't suppose this is possible. I was so worried she would be run over by the tip vehicles, or farm machinery. Thank you all again. She has been following Ray around so far today and sitting on the settee in the staff offices next to him! She's not chipped. Does have a swollen lip but was going to have an injection for it. Lots of black on her back and chest area but tan on the legs and very grey under her chin - who wouldn't be living up at Calvert! Very clean in the kennels and is now probably sleeping on her duvet with a heatlamp on again! Bet she can't believe the luxury and attention she is getting as it was thought she was deaf at one stage, but no, as she stands and stares at everyone! Will let you know any more progress when we are updated. One less to worry about tonight!

Re emaciated condition I know it is gut wrenching to say the least to see them handed back as "they are not bad enough" at that particular time. Unfortunately some do have their dogs chips, not sure if I'm correct in saying that RSPCA staff when they go in on sites "chip" the dogs to them. I've found 3 dogs, 2 very recently and in an emaciated state and because they were chipped had to be handed back to them argggggggh!

This dog has been sighted by trapper late last night on private land. He has confirmed that it is female but is definitely not Teddy (nor Roxy)as colourings are wrong.I will of course send an email to Teddy's owner Sam. The dog is gaining in confidence especially as special prepared food is being left for her and hopefully it will only be a matter of time before she is caught. I will update further when I have any more info. x

Hi folks, we may have been off the "air" but things have/are still going on! A trap is now in place as from today. This trap is placed away from the public area as the dog is sighted more on private land now. I will keep you posted when I hear something positive. Thank you x

Thanks for info. So many Lurcher type dogs are around at the moment because we've got so many travellers! Lisa K don't think its the same dog as the Calvert stray I'm told by staff at landfill that def GSD. If anyone sees the ?Lurcher perhaps you might be able to see a few more features and then we could put on here as Found(Sighted only) even better if someone can get a photograph of either dog! etc. TVM

Preston Bissett isn't a million miles either from Steeple Claydon or Calvert. I know the dog I saw at The rear of the landfill was definitely a GSD but could it be that in the dusk that someone could mistake the shape and colour of the dog for a lurcher?? The one I saw was very thin and a small build, which apart from the pink collar, also convinced me it was female.

Hi Claire, we had this info on the Woody facebook page, Woody wasn't wearing a collar, although of course he may be now, but I also noticed that Deanne mentioned the dog she saw was more lurcher type & that was quite close so wanted to share it with you - here is the info we received "I have seen what appeared to be a stray dog this evening in Preston Bissett. It appeared to be some kind of lurcher type cross but I can't be 100% sure. I couldn't really see specific colours as it was dark but it definitely had dark and light patches. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Woody but I didn't get a very good look. It did have a large distinctive collar. Does this sound like it could be the same dog?"

Sadly, this dog has not been sighted at the Landfill for over a week. If any of you, when out and about, sight it can you please post here and exactly where the sighting was. If you have a mobile phone with you it may just be possible to take a photo of it which would be really helpful. Thank you.

I've just read through the info about the other dog at Mursley, I reckon it is the same dog but I feel 100% that this is a female dog. I know she is thin, but the overall build I.e. body height and length, bone structure etc all points to being female. If it is the Mursley dog then she has been wild for a long time and will be accustomed to her lifestyle now. Very sad.

Someone at some time has placed this pink collar on the dog so I wonder if there are pups she had an unplanned mating and got kicked out... would it be possible to contact vets in a reasonable radius to see if they have a GS registered who was known to them and wore a pink collar, and hasn`t been seen for a while? It's just that this barking and yapping has been mentioned a few times. Yapping seems to be associated with small or young dogs which is what got me wondering. Also it could be what is making her aggressive, although that could just be that she has become feral. Would anyone have noticed if she had been lactating as in her nipples being prominent like bitches have when they are feeding their young? It's got me a bit confused now!

Took a good walk up the track about an hr ago, yapping/barking was heard just over on the landfill then appeared to move over across to the fields and stopped, I hung around a bit where I have seen animals track across before in an opening in the fencing but nothing....will try again on Friday when I am working at home.

I agree Claire, she has been around or a while and managed to keep away from humans so is probably terrified. In the field just up past the old farmyard is a pond which is quite accessible so she can probably get water from there. I surprised I've not seen her before as I've walked my dogs in those fields for years. I'm a bit concerned about going up here now though as my dogs would chase her if they saw her, plus one of mine doesn't get on with other dogs so wouldn't want to antagonise the situation.

Hi Steph, I look at that old farm and whistled a few times around it just to hear/see if anything moved. You are quite right there are rather a lot of good hiding places. Bit reluctant to walk along the old railway because I don't want the dog becoming even more frightened and moving on at this stage if this is a possibility of where it is living. Very much dependent on the chap at the landfill at the moment. Softly softly is my recommendation.

Just to add that when I saw this dog it was mid afternoon, and it was on the little road that runs from Edgcott to Quainton but literally just past the old farmyard at the top of the hill going out of Edgcott. I have had GSDs for years now, males and females and I would swear that this is a female dog. Much more finally boned and generally smaller than any of the males I have known. She also had quite a lot of tan in her coat, quite light tan from what I could see, but with the black saddle. She appeared to be mid coat rather than short or long coated and had a long tail. Definitely a pedigree! As she was heading towards the bushes I couldn't see her muzzle, but as stated earlier unless it is a white GSD, it will almost certainly have a darker muzzle. I drove back to Edgcott along the same road tonight at dusk, but didn't see any sign of her. There are several farms in the location an lots of fields with hiding places, sadly she could be anywhere in there.

I've just looked through all the GSD sites and you're absolutely right! They've all got black masks/muzzles! I really ought to pay more attention! I think that perhaps it's because Teddy's black seems to cut short at her eyes with a little blob above and some of the others black goes right over their head! Oh well, you live and learn :)

As I said I'm no expert on GSD's but I just know that everytime a GSD has been found I check it out for Teddy but it seems that most of them never had the black muzzle so they were easy to disregard as Teddy! Oh well, you've disappointed me a little as I thought that Teddy's lovely black muzzle was a good indication that it was her, but never mind, nothing has really changed so there is still a good chance that it is!

Hi Barney'n'Ozzie's mum. What a shame ! I feel that everyday this poor dog is out in the cold and wet it's another horrible day for her and not good for her health. I once read a story and saw the youtube video of a lion that was reared by hand and at a year old was reintroduced to the wilds. A year later the man that reared it went back to see how he was getting on and the lion recognised him straight away and started jumping up and licking him! Not something I would personally relish but it brought a tear to my eye.So I had hoped that this would be the case with 'Teddy'!!

Hi Ellie. Unfortunately, when dogs turn feral (which happens very quickly) they don't seem to recognise their owner straight away. I've been a helper on here for a few years now and have read this many times. On some occasions the dog has walked right by the owner and shown no recognition whatsoever! It's really a matter of gaining her trust, which could take ages, scenting, setting up a feeding station, etc. I'll be much happier once the trap is in position, but it could be weeks before she ventures anywhere near it. Sounds really hopeful about the black muzzle though doesn't it :)

Hi all, I will try and take a walk up there early one evening....I am going to guess that if the guys at the landfill see her at 5.00/5.30 she must leave the site and move into the woods and nearer the train line/bridal path - I have ever only seen her at evening/night and never during the day - the bridal path gets a lot of dog walkers/walker/horses so she may stear clear?

Barney's mum - I have to say she certainly looks very similar - it's the muzzle which stands out - but very thin and wet, but yes, a possibility - I have been posting all the info there too.
There are a lot of badgers/foxes about so every possibility.

Can I get a full post code please of sighting and reg 5.30 see if known I not far from there. And will try to get there before 5.30 to see if I can get some snaps. Will be out weekend looking for Fagen who is missing as well all be it in a dif area. Now is that 0530 am or PM ???

CJ seems to have seen reg in eve as to have the workmen but who has had most sightings??? worse comes to worse a few trips morning and eve in order

Hi all followers. We have been out but sadly didn't see this dog. We made enquiries at Calvert landfill and it would appear that the dog "lives" there with a usual sighting at around 05.30 am on a fairly regular basis by a worker. (I have his name & contact details). It is said that nobody can get near enough to this dog to even find out gender as it appears is "vicious" now. I'm not sure their interpretation of the word. I will speak with other Admin coords to seek the best solution. I have left a message for Sam, owner of missing GSD Teddy to give me a call. Hope to post something on site soon as to way forward. Thank you Barney & Ozzies Mum, it was nice to meet you today and I might see you at the Car Wash after our rallying adventure!

I've been looking at the google earth maps - the old disused rail line that runs through Mursley / Swanbourne ends up at Calvert area so she could easily and safely have traversed this route on her own from where she was seen last year, she also would be likely to show 'agression' if anyone came too close after that long fending for herself - we could try a trap once we can decide on a spot to place it - although I am going to be unable to monitor it or help until after crufts - it could be a long one as if she is feeding at the tip - enticing her away from ready made scavenging will be very hard so possibly one person close by to start feeding one location say just before bed may give us a head start before attempting a trap

Having read all the info about the dog at Mursley, it sounds very much like the one I saw yesterday. Also, the one I saw has been around the Calvert area since before xmas so the timings tie in too. Mursley isn't too far from Calvert either, as the crow flies. I still feel that this dog was a loved pet as she was wearing a collar and a pink one too, so sounds like someone loved her enough to buy her a pretty collar. I hope she soon gets caught, its pretty dangerous round the landfill and local roads with heavy traffic.

I can certainly give you directions Sam, as we almost bought a house in Calvert Green at the end of last year and walked along the footpath between the railway line and landfill site several times x

Unfortunately I think it's a bit too far away to be Roxy, Mishybird. I tend to agree with Angus that this is the girlie seen near Mursley back in October. Makes more sense if you look at the area on a map - but of course we never rule anything out x

Hi Shereen, yes I've seen Teddys page, there is a possibility it is her. In her photo she does look to be a bigger build and quite fluffy tho, but if shes been running wild for a year of course that can change. If I see her again I will post back here, but otherwise I am almost sure she is living near the landfill or scavenging from local farms etc

The only info I have is that I saw the dog as I was driving into Edgcott from the Quainton Road. She was what I would call a Black and Tan but with black only on her back. Was mid coat rather than short coated, quite thin and wearing what appeared to be a pink collar which I suppose could have been red originally. My son works for Calvert landfill and believes the dog is living on there. He has been told not to approach her as she is vicious. I will see if he has seen her again and can maybe get a pic of her. She has been around since before xmas as far as I know so is probably the same dog as sighted below. She ran off into the bushes/fields towards the landfill. I would have tried to get her but had my two GSDs in the car, one if which doesn't get on with other dogs.

Been diverted here from a FB page if it is of any help,
Over the last few months have seen a German Shepherd very similar to this, looking very malnourished and a "light" coloured collar.

October 2012 Approx 11/12PM - Seen on the main road near the Calvert/Chardon crossroads, running straight down the road away from Calvert towards Gawcott, slowed as thought was a dear. As I went past it stopped, reversed back and it ran into fields near reservoir.

Dec 2012 - again 11PM seen on the same road but run straight out in front of me across the road

Dec 2012 - Approx 6PM Brackley Lane into Calvert, daughters shouted that they saw a dog outside, looked at and looked remarkably like the same dog running off to bridal way alongside railway line.

Jan/Feb 2012 - the 1st day we had snow this year !! Approx 5PM, walked down the bridalway towards railway line to take photo's in fresh snow - noticed dog prints which was wierd as no foot prints, approx 1/2 mile down following tracks came across same dog again staring down - kept going away from me looking over it's shoulder before eventually diving off to the right towards the landfill.

I hope this is of use to someone and brings you closer to tracking down.

The trouble is if its a travellers dog and has been chipped they have to given them back again. Just had this experience of 2 emaciated lurchers aaagh! Barney & Ozzie's Mum might see you up/around there tomorrow if you are going. I could be mistaken as a female kerb crawler in a blue Suzuki!
