Brilliant news - I am so pleased! Welcome home dear Bella - stay safe now after your little adventure xx
Suziewoo
How lovely to hear that she is already settling with Pam & Ray! Sounds like she hasn't ever known any love & comfort in her life up til now. I would love to see a reunited photo when you have time :-)
Unknown
So pleased Bella is safe and being looked after . Great; Sending her loads of xxxxx`s
Taz
Updating you all. Bella is quite relaxed, fast asleep at my feet. She is such a gentle dog. Already following us around. We are feeding her little and often and she is so careful when she takes food from your hand. We are already in love with her. Hoping her first night here is ok. Thanks again everyone
Pilot's mum
whoo! thats fantastic.Very well done Ray and everyone.
Have a great life in your new home Bella.
PaulaK
Great news, well done all
Goldenfrodo
I am so pleased Bella is now safely back home xx
Twirl
I just checked in to the lost dog and Bella was gone so it was with great relief that she's appeared in this section, I am over the moon for you all as when I saw her last Saturday there was panic in her eyes. Now she can settle down to a loving home. Big hugs to her.
CampK9
That is great news and I'm so pleased for Ray as well as Bella as he's really put in a lot this last week.

For me there are lots of takeaways. Bella was in an area where there are lots of natural hideouts but a nice comfy sleeping area was ultimately more attractive, coupled with the fact that this is where food and water was for her - there wasn't much natural water around that area and of course the weather being hot, water was important.

But the future for Bella now looks a whole lot brighter :-)
jacqueline
That's fantastic news. Glad she's back with ray.
Jan S
Wonderful, just wonderful news, so relieved she is safe.
Taz
Cant believe that Ray has her safe and sound. He found her in one of the trucks in the Quarty curled up asleep on the front seat. He talked to her and stroked for about 45 minutes and then he managed to put a slip lead on her without any fuss. He got her into his van and both are now at home. She obviously needs to settle and a lot of TLC. So very thankful to everyone who has helped us. I can't wait to see her - I am still at work, but will see her on about an hour - cant wait!!! THANK YOU. Will keep you updated on her progress
Suziewoo
What a huge relief!!! Well done Ray & everyone else. Hope you manage to coax her from her new home :-)

Great news...

Ray now has Bella with him this morning safe and sound. Well done you people and those who have offered. Ray will post more, when he gets over his relief!!
Julie B
I remember following Evas story. Come on gorgeous Bella - it is your turn to go into the trap now so that you can be brought safely home. xx
jacqueline
that's fantastic news. i didn't get a reply from rspca godstone. but i'm glad one has been found. count me in for the watching rota. my mobile is on my profile.
Suziewoo
I've located the trap & along with it a GSD expert who is able to deliver it to Ray! It is a year ago today since we caught Eva in the trap! Let's hope it brings the same luck to Bella & Ray!I am happy to take part in a rota to watch the trap. The RSPCA at Godstone didn't have a trap when I asked them last year & also seemed very unwilling to help, despite being already aware of Eva's situation.
PaulaK
Ive already asked john at biggsd and he doesnt have a trap at the mo
jacqueline
I have emailed rspca godstone to see if they have a trap. If you need any help taking turns to watch the trap let me know , i'd be more than happy to help.
my boy max
try contacting BIGGSD go to there forum think they may have a trap
http://s10.zetaboards.com/biggsd/topic/7390246/1/#new
also may have members in that area that can helpLast edited: 2012-03-23 23:01:26 by my boy max
Suziewoo
Pam, I'll contact the trap lady first thing tomorrow & get back to you or Ray. It certainly worked for Eva and tomorrow is exactly a year since she was trapped after 5 months on the run! We took it in turns to watch the trap & check it regularly. She was very nervous & hadn't had a chance to bond with her new owner but she is now happily living with Ursula & her family as if nothing ever happened! You will get Bella back safely :-)
Taz
Thank you Suziewoo - that would be marvellous. CampK9 - Ray has tried Martin Soar on that number but that number seems to be no longer in service unfortunately. He sounded great too!!

Suziewoo
Eva's owner has given me the number for the person who has the trap (in East Grinstead). It is certainly big enough to catch a GSD. I honestly don't think there will be any other way other than to trap her. She has no bonds with anyone & any failed attempts to grab her would scare her more & force her to move areas. Whilst she is happy where she is, she needs to be kept there. as with Eva, the trap will have to remain shut unless there is someone watching it in case any wildlife goes in there. Sedating a dog would have to be the last resort because if she doesn't eat enough to be properly sedated she would be a danger to herself. I'll make contact with the person who has the trap.
Taz
Again - thank you all for your comments. My goodness - isn't a lot learned from experience? CampK9 - I have taken doen Martin's number - thank you - and we will call him tomorrow - that sounds really good. RSPCA keep passing us on to dog wardens?? It's such an emotional roller coaster - but still positive!!!
Twirl
We didn't have any luck getting a trap when looking for another dog a couple of years ago. Maybe ring round some vets for contacts, also ask if they are licensed to use dart guns?
CampK9
I've trawled back through the Eva log (collie missing for 5 months around Redhill who was eventually caught with a trap). Found this comment.

Has anyone tried trapping her, there is a chap called martin soar, contact number 07815131164, he is excellent, if you are having sightings around the same area, either he will come out, or will tell you where there is a trap available in your area
CampK9
How about the RSPCA for a trap? South Godstone or other....?
Taz
Ray said that he tried Leatherhead wildlife and they wouldn't len him a cage because of the fear of cross disease from foxes to dogs, so he didn't have any luck there. He is willing to pay for the rental of a trap if necessary. Bella hasn't been seen around the quarry today, and her food is still there. Hopefully she may eat tonight. Bless her
Taz
Ray has a VW van - so transporting a large cage is no problem - that would be great
jacqueline
PaulaK would the trap fit into a mondeo estate if the seats were down
PaulaK
Wildlife Aid had a large trap, we borrowed it to catch an errant labrador but it is big and doesnt collapse so needs a large van to transport it
Redbertie
Have you tried WildlifeAid in Leatherhead for a trap at all?
Pilot's mum
One of the wildlife rescue organizations such as Hydestile may be able to help with a trap and ,if necessary, give some advice. Have you got a blanket or something with her scent on it which could go in the trap?
Taz
Thank you for your comments and advice. Bella has also run away from females I'm afraid. I saw her and she turned and ran. We are not having much luck in getting a trap, so any help appreciated. Ray is happy to stay near trap to ensure that no foxes, cats etc get in there. Think sedatives ate a good idea but if she vanishes up the quarry shear be hard to find if they take a while to work. Ray is on mobile number if you know of available trap or if you have further advice. Thank you xxx
jacqueline
just got off the phone with jo the dog warden. and he's strongly advising against using a dog trap as this may very well end up full of wildlife and if it spooks her she won't go near it again. He suggested the same as Harriot that she may not feel that frightened of one or maybe two females. he also suggested that if the female approach didn't work then maybe ray could contact the vet regarding ACP (sedative ) but this would mean that the food and the dog once she's eaten it could not be left alone and should be closely monitored . hope this helps.
jacqueline
have just spoken to harriot thomas at the dog wardens office and she's going to give jo (dog warden ) a call and see if he can help with a dog trap. Harriot also suggested that maybe she is afraid of men so that's why she's not coming to ray, maybe see if she will go to a female. i'm waiting to hear back from jo. he's either going to call me back or get directly in touch with Ray.
jacqueline
spent some time up at the footpaths around the back of the quarry, but nothing to report. do we know if Ray has managed to get hold of a trap yet. it might be worth asking the local dog warden if they now anywhere that would let him borrow one.
** update: i have put a message on a couple of the petsites that i belong to on facebook asking if anyone has a trap ray could borrow. i've said i am willing to collect and return. if i have any luck i'll let you know.**Last edited: 2012-03-23 11:36:03 by jacqueline

Stay safe Bella. Let yourself be caught soon, and please stay away from those railway lines xx
Suziewoo
I think you need to carry on with the feeding and get her used to seeing just one person so she can at least build up a positive connection with Ray & the food. A trap will be by far the safest way to catch her (for her & Ray). Is there anyone at Doglost who can lend a trap?
CampK9
Will give him a call tomorrow and see what we can do through the weekend if she's not back with you by then. Fully understand on the people issue but hopefully we have enough patience and know-how with dogs to be of some use.
Taz
Thank you for offering help in and around the Quarry. Our problem is that when Bella sees other people she runs off, and we just don't want to scare her. Ray is going again early in the morning to give more food. She has been seen on CCTV eating the food so at least we know she has eaten. If you feel you can help, please give Ray a call - he does not have access to a computer and I am away this evening and tomorrow. Still can't tell you enough how much we appreciate your help!
CampK9
Hi Taz, tis good news for sure. Is there anything else you'd like anyone else to do (presumably it being a quarry it's limited access). We have been looking this week in that area as we walk at Reigate Heath etc. but if you'd like more hands when you go to the quarry and around then just ask.
Taz
Just a quick update - and apologies for grammar and spelling in previous posts - I was working from my iphone which is always a little tricky! As well as Ray seeing Bella this morning, the guys at the quarry saw her about an hour later. One man went to the office there and Bella was lying in there but ran as soon as she saw him. We have put a bucket of water out for her and some more food in her food bowl - and that is all away from the office. Ray is going there again later with someone from the rescue. We will not call her name or try to catch her for all the reasons that have been advised. I think they may have to get a humane trap to get her - but at least she will be safe. Ray is sourcing that this afternoon. I will keep you updated on any news. We feel so much better than yesterday - but still obviously worried for her until she is safe
Suziewoo
Really pleased she is still in the same area as while she is there, you can at least keep any eye on her & feed her, even if you can't catch her. She may need to be trapped as she hasn't formed a bond with anyone and will be very hard to catch. If someone tries to grab her & fails, it will spook her more & we will be back to square one. It's best to just keep feeding her & give her a reason to stay in the same place.
Twirl
Fingers crossed she'll develop a pattern and make that area her home. I'm unable to get out much right now so sorry unable to help search but am spreading the word.
jacqueline
That's fantastic news, it's good that she seems unharmed to, lets hope by this evening she's back at home , blissfully unaware of all the chaos. stay safe bella.
PaulaK
Just had a call to tell me the same from gabrielle - good news indeed. I will contact some friends to see if they can get over there today
Taz
Forgot to say that the time Bella was seen this morning was 7.15am. Thank you
Taz
Bella has just been seen by Ray at the Quarry just by Betchworth station. Ray left her dog bowl and food there for her and I think he is going to leave as she ran away when she saw him. Seems that she has made that her base. Both and I have to be at work today and so we can't do much lore until tonight. We need to tell the houses in The Coombe to be on the lookout. The workers at the quarry know and have been very helpful. Ray has his mobile on him of anyone has any ideas. She doesn't appear to be injured at all which is such a relief!!! Thank you Janem, but she is in Betchworth now, so you can relax and enjoy your walk.
janem
I am up on Ashtead common every day and will keep looking
Suziewoo
I think you will need to keep a diary & record dates/times/locations of any sightings & then if necessary it can be plotted on a map. Also keep details of who reported each sighting. If you haven't already done so, it's worth contacting all local vets and displaying a poster at the post office & station in Betchworth plus the rugby club in Brockham. Hope you have some positive news very soon.
Jan S
Sorry I haven't managed to get to Epsom/Ashtead Commons as I'd hoped, been many miles away today but will walk there tomorrow. I agree it seems very unlikely that the dog seen could have been Bella, but any unaccompanied dog walking along the A24 sounds like a bad idea.
Does the golf club just along from the Betchworth roundabout know about Bella ?
Certainly are plenty of rabbits around this area. Hope there will be another sighting very soon.Last edited: 2012-03-20 19:45:42 by Jan S

Hi PaulaK. We have been a bit vague on timings I'm afraid. She was definitely seen at the Quarry in Buckland about 9am on Saturday. The timing of when she was seen in the garden near there is a bit vague - it was about 10.30am. It was about 11.15 when reprted near Ashtead. It is doubtful I agree, but you hate to dismiss it. Just in case. We have informed all kennels nearby and garden centres. We have also been to some of the houses near the quarry and asked them to let us know if she is seen. If they see her in their garden, we have asked them to put food out and then go back in - trying to contain her in that area. We have also told local farmers as it is lambing season and that could mean trouble if she is spotted in one of thier fields. Ray has had no news today and he has been driving the Boxhill / Headley area. I think he is going to go thte Quarry again tonight. Such a worry for everyone =- but my goodness - all of your help has been amazing!!!
jacqueline
just got back from a drive round the pebblehill/boxhill and the zig zag, nothing to report i'm afraid. it is such a vast area that without a starting point i'm not sure where to start. i am more than willing to meet up if anyone is heading over that way as i don't live far away from boxhill.
DogLostXenas Mum - Area Volunteer, Norfolk
A couple of years ago I spent a lot of time walking the area near that quarry looking for a missing dog. It's vast woodland and goes right up to Box Hill a dog could live the life of riley in there as long as it has some water and is able to kill bunnies! I doubt very much that she has moved far from here. I suggest you leaflet all the properties in the area and poster at the Garden Centre by the round about. Sorry I can't help I live in Norfolk now....
PaulaK
Taz can you confirm Bella last sighting of Bella was yesterday afternoon at the roundabout by Betchworth heading towards the Red Lion? If so then I fear the Ashtead sightings have to be another dog
Taz
Thank you for handing out posters J. Bella is not wearing a collar. Apparently she does like other dogs but not sure if she would approach. I agree about calling her etc, she just turns and runs away. I am just rushing into work but wanted to reply to you kind people. Ray is on his phone out looking at moment in Boxhill. Thank you!!!!!!!
jacqueline
handed a poster into the ashtead common estate office and another one into the vets in ashtead and a couple more whilst out on the walk in ashtead common.
I have to admit though i'm of the same mind as PaulaK, it does seem a bit off course for her to be there. i've also advised people not to try and catch her but to call the numbers on the poster.
PaulaK
I personally dont think the dog seen in Ashtead area can have been Bella but of course may be wrong. Someone mentioned a sighting of her yesterday in a garden at Pebble Hill at lunchtime - can anyone confirm this? Hate to think of people searching the wrong area. Bella is obviously scared so I would urge anyone that sees her to just call the number on the poster and report it - please do not chase or call her name as this may just send her running out of the area.
jacqueline
handed out posters whilst on the ashtead dog walk yesterday, will take more with me this morning whilst on the lower ashtead walk. then back up to upper ashtead this afternoon around 3pm
Has anyone dropped one into the ashtead vets, if not i'll do it after the walk, also good idea to pin one on the level crossing fence as people stand there with their dogs waiting for the gates to open before going across to the commonLast edited: 2012-03-20 08:23:03 by jacqueline

Will keep look out on Ashtead common. Is she wearing a collar at all? Is she likely to come to someone with another dog?
Taz
Sorry - she was spotted inAshtead area heading in Epsom direction - not actually seen in Epsom. Think the tiredness has got to me:)
Taz
Bella slipped her collar in Buckland - houses near petrol station. She was originally from Petersfield. She has been seen arou d the quarry area a couple of times, bug the possible sighting near Ashtead/Epsom opens things up. We are just going to have another look in quarry area and taking food. Have put more posters up in this area but posters in Epsom area may be useful? Thank you for info
CampK9
Did a twilight sweep along Buckland up Pebble Hill to WOTH but nothing. I was wondering where Bella slipped the lead exactly and where was she from before being taken into foster? Any chance she could try and go back to where she came from? The area around Betchworth station etc. isn't the easiest to look on foot as they aren't exactly walking areas so exact location of loss and previous location would be a help imho.
Taz
Thanks Jacqueline. Haven't had any recent sightings - so we are very grateful for you looking in the Epsom area. We are still looking in our area but nothing yet. Thanks again
jacqueline
Nothing to report from thorncroft manor. Just off to epsom/ashtead common for the next walk, will keep my eyes open. still available for searching later on if needed.
Jan S
That does seem a long way, but maybe coming through Boxhill/Headley to Ashtead through woodland its possible. If she is going through wooded area hopefully she will have come off the A24 between Ashtead and Epsom and got onto Ashtead/Epsom Common. I live near Epsom Common and I'll walk there with my dogs this afternoon.
I've sent her details on to friends and family around Epsom and to my nephew who is a Policeman locally.
Pilot's mum
I have put posters up in Gatton Park [Nutwood ] and in the vicinity of the Wray Lane car oark on Reigate Hill.
Have also told the Nationsal Trust Ranger for the Reigate area.

jacqueline
will be walking on thorncroft manor just after 13:30 today, will keep my eyes open
Suziewoo
Are you sure that it was Bella? It seems like quite a long way for her travel, especially if she had been hanging round the quarry for the past couple of days. Dogs can cover large distances but it would be worth leaving food & a blanket for her at the place where your friend saw her earlier this morning, just in case the other dog on A24 wasn't her. Let me know if you need some help.
zen
please stay safe bella until someone can find you
Taz
Just received information that she was seen at approximately 11.15am walking along the A24 at Ashtead going towards Epsom. Traffic is really going to be her enemy in this. She is on the move and covering a lot of distance. She doesn't seem to be very road-wise. Poor thing - she is so scared
Taz
CampK9 and Jan S - thank you!!!!! She was due to be fostered in Buckland and that is where she slipped her collar. She seems to have stayed within a mile or so of Buckland - for now! We have put some posters up on Boxhill, but we are going to put more up today - from this website which will be better. Fingers crossed!
CampK9
Camp K9 will be in the area around Reigate Heath today and will do what we can. Info is a couple of days old though and if Bella was seen on Pebblecombe Hill there's lots of out of the way private land. Which area had she come from?
Jan S
So she could be heading in Boxhill/Headley direction, loads of dog walkers that will keep a look out around there once they know about her. Don't think I can get there myself today, but if you can get loads of posters around the area.
Taz
Thank you for all your comments, suggestions and offers of help. We have just been informed that Bella has been seen at the Quarry behind Betchworth station. She was lying by a truck but when she was called she ran away up the hill. We are putting up more posters today and now we know she is in the area and still alive it does give us more hope. Suziewoo - thank you!Good idea and we will give you a call later about tomorrow - that's very kind
Jan S
Have sent on to friends and family in the area.
Hope she will be found safely very soon. Worried about the railway line.
There are a couple of garden centres around there, do they know about her ?
jacqueline
posted info on facebook, twitter and will put posters in the car . Lets get her back home, can also help with searching after 4pm today if needed.

I saw Bella running towards DORKINGSURREY A25. She was followed for a short while by a police car then she turned round and came back again i then saw her head up Pebble Hill at 4pm Saturday when I was in the garden centre by the roundabout. The staff there knew about her and left a MSG for Ray. I pray she is ok. I think putting posters up in the area is a good idea.Last edited: 2012-03-18 18:02:08 by Twirl
