Still looking. Always hoping.

Socks has been missing 6 years. She will be 8 if she is still alive. Feel so sad that she never came home. Always looking out for her and thinking of her, wondering if somebody has her or if she is roaming the countryside - it's heartbreaking even after all these years. Can't believe she hasn't been scanned by now. Microchip no 985170000071991.

I saw your article about Socks in the St Albans paper last week and I know all too well how you feel... our dog went missing back in Jan 2011 and we have not found him yet either but we never give up hope and never give up searching. I hope that one day we will both get our beloved dogs home. I always look out for Socks when in the area.

Featured in todays Countrymans Weekly Magazine - I hope it brings some news

Just thought I better update. The little terrier you found SarahMc is not Socks but thank you so much for posting.
SarahMc
Hi This may be a wild goose chase but we found a very small jack russell bitch on Saturday 28th December on the corner of White Horse Lane where it comes off the A414, we took her to RSPCA Southridge as she needed some care. There was no chip that they could find but they did take her in. They figured she was approx three years old, I wish I had taken a photo but I was just desperate to get her to someone who could look after her. The branch called her Pickle, she may not be your girl but she did look very much like the photo. My fingers crossed for you.
LucyL
I hope Socks is home soon, will keep a look out for her.

2 Years ago today Socks went missing. Please don't give up keeping an eye out for her. We are sure she is out there somewhere. Our children still talk about her all the time.

I have posted this on your Facebook page for Socks but thought I ought to post here as well. Found female has similar markings to Socks, but ears seem lighter on one side. I guess more photos would help if you can get in touch with the finder via the site http://www.nationalpetregister.org/fp/51070.htm

Have also followed up on the Found Dog at Animal Wardens - thanks for that. It's worth a go but I'm hoping they would find her chip if it was her....x

Really good and simple missing ad in 'Dogs Today' thank you to those who helped with that - but no news yet. Have been putting up some new posters in the area. Also spoke to the bin men again this week who have been amazingly caring. They have some great 'contacts' but unfortunately nobody claims to have seen Socks. I wish St Albans had a dedicated dog warden - I don't feel that the council particularly cares about lost dogs in this area.
Belle
Good luck. Hope the fresh publicity brings Socks back to you.

Sorry to see Socks is still missing, hopefully she gets home one very soon. Will keep a look out. Great she in Dogs Today x

Exactly a year ago to the day our little girl went missing and despite a lot of publicity, posters, leaflets etc we still haven't been able to find her. We haven't given up hope. Our campaign to find her continues. Thanks to Dog Lost an appeal is going in the Dogs Today magazine next month and I have been sending out emails, posters and facebook messages particularly in the last few days and today the hope that people will keep looking. Thank you to those who have already circulated her information once again on facebook and twitter. I'll contact Queen Elizabeth to see if they've had her in - thanks for the tip Claire.
ClaireC
Did you ever check the Queen Elizabeth Vet College fairly nearby to where your Socks went missing from by any chance? Even though a year on somebody may have had to take him there for treatment as a possibility. Worth taking a drive up and take a photo to see if they can/might remember a dog coming into them.

Will circulate on fbook again to jog people's memory. Good luck xx

Socks went missing a year ago today. Sally, Socks' owner will be doing a piece for BBC Three Counties with me later in the week.
SallyF
Yes this dog really does look like Socks although I agree probably a long shot given she is chipped. I've sent them an email and will contact them as soon as they are open in the morn. Unfort didn't pick this message up in time to make contact during opening hours so will have to steady the feelings until then. Thank you so much for thinking of her. x

I have just shared a link on Socks Facebook page. There is a photo of a found dog at Leigh Cat & Dog home which to my eye looks like Socks. I have also shared the link to LC&DH for contact details. A long shot given Socks is chipped but I thought it worth checking out.

oh yes and another ad went in the Herts Advertiser last week reaching thousands of homes across Hertfordshire. Still not giving up on her....xxx

Hi, thanks again for all your suggestions. I now have a plan. Will report back tomorrow. Fingers crossed. x
Neighbark
How about finding a smart person to knock on the door pretending to be doing a survey into dog foods/treats...A4 official clipboard in hand, brief questionaire to be completed about 'dogs preferences/flavours/chews etc.' - in return for several free cans of dog food/chews etc. - even free collars (have a small selection ready). Very laid-back attitude, just market research, no hassle...... they might even want to try the new free collar on that little dog who just happens to live there????? I do know this sounds far-fetched, but it could just work! Everyone loves freebies after-all.Last edited: 2012-06-08 13:03:48 by Neighbark
DogLostreggiemollieros
Would a home made periscope work? There are a few sites which show you how to make them with cartons and 2 small mirrors? (I just checked you can buy on ebay for between £3 and £8.00. People use them for festivals says it can be the eqivalent of being 6ft tall)
Is so hard as if they have kept Socks knowing she is lost then you don't want them to panic and move her on. I wish I lived nearer so I could come with you. Last edited: 2012-06-07 15:02:57 by reggiemollieros

Have you asked all the people who are coming and going if this person has recently acquired a dog?? They may know ..
Unknown
Pretty much all moved, I'm afraid.
SallyF
Good idea but the dog is too far away. I'd have to go into their garden - there are too many people coming and going - it's not safe. Nik, who is this 'Hemel team'? Can you give me some contact info? Thanks for all the ideas. x
Neighbark
Could you have her favourite treats on you? - to coax her out of the kennel so you could get a better look?
Unknown
I've been away and didn't know about this latest development. The old Hemel team used to do a lot of observation. I would suggest the car at a safe distance with camera. Only approach closely when you're sure no-one's in.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
My friends dog Nipper (now reunited) was spotted locally and he literally sat in his car & watched the road mentioned at certain times .. going to/coming from work, school times etc. I would definitely put lots of posters in that road. Might be worth asking neighbours if the household concerned had a dog previously or whether this is a recent appearance. I wonder if the kennel is new looking..put up recently? Are there any local shops/newsagents that the people might use..ask for info in there? Check with local vets to see if anyone has registered/visited with a dog of that description recently. Also .. if the postman saw the dog, how about asking what time he delivered there and go at that time .. maybe he always comes out to bark at him! Good luck. SallyF
Hi, have had a chat with Angus and she is going to chat to a few people about how best to approach this. Unfort it's not as simple as knocking on their door and trying to get a better look. The postman read about Socks in the local newsletter so he has seen her picture and knows the description. Thanks for all your advice - we are working on it....

wish i lived closer i would just go knock on the door and ask for "whatever name i though of" just to get a closer look people always make a mistake where i live knocking on my door asking for someone who dont live here. !! or bake some buns and knock on the door to sell them any excuse i could think of i would be using to try to get a closer look. Or even print a poster and post it through the letter box......Last edited: 2012-06-06 18:30:33 by migman34

Just had notification from a postman to say there is a dog that fits Socks description in Park Street. Just been to have a look and it could be her but the dog won't come out of it's kennel for me to be able to see. I would have to trespass across their garden in order to get a closer look. Advice please???
Border Girl
Lots of people stopped off and read Socks' poster, I really hope someone's memory has been jogged or some more people will now be keeping an eye out for her and you hear some news soon.

I will be at the Herts Show at Redbourn over the weekend, helping on the Dogstrust stand. I will print off a couple of posters and put them up on the stand. Thousands of people go to the show from all over the area, lets hope someone see the poster and has some news.

well done SallyF & Nik for getting the story out - bumped x
SallyF
A nice long article has gone in the London Colney (our very local 'village') newsletter today with information about Socks and the emotional impact of losing a dog. A few mentions of the service DogLost provides too. This is really good news as this will be delivered to 4000 homes in my immediate area. Thanks again to Nik Oakley who wrote the article.

Let me know when its out and we can bump Socks and put on our news page...
SallyF
Thanks to Nik for her help with that article and fingers crossed they run the full story. We are still handing out leaflets and putting up posters and I've been emailing dog wardens, vets, rescue centres, traveller liaison officers etc reminding them that Socks is still missing. Lots of good positive messages coming back. Her Facebook page is doing well again. Please 'Like' it and share it to help spread the word. People are still willing to help - it's amazing. Dekkaann, Sally has been working really hard in the area and posters that have gone up have been taken down in some areas. If would help her enormously if you were able to poster Bricket Wood. (I am, of course, making an assumption that you're local.) I also know that she's not able to do much this week.
dekkaann
I saw the posters when they first came out but was told by a local the dog had been found!
Now I know this is not so I will be more vigilant.
Have you postered Bricket wood?
after walking the dogs on Sunday we called in at
The Fox pub, dogs running everywhere!
I noticed a couple with a dog/bitch that looked on the lines of Socks, had I realised she was still missing I would have paid more attention.

Sally has been doing absolutely sterling work to get Socks back, largely on her own. I have discussed with her a few local promotional activities and it would be really good if a few helpers could spare a few hours to help out one weekend.

Today I managed to finish delivering leaflets to 2 villages in the area Socks went missing....and you thought I'd given up!! The search goes on. Please keep keeping a look out and continue to spread the word. Thanks for all your continued support and good wishes. x

Thank you for putting her on twitter that's v helpful. No further sightings at Gorhambury. I've been there every day. An ad is going in the Herts Review this week. I've noticed that people are starting to take the posters down so it would be really helpful if you could help me get them back up if you live locally and see a good opportunity for one to go up. Thank you to those are are still looking out for little Socks. x

This is good news Sally - have bumped her for the sighting - will be in contact tomorrow x
SallyF
Yesterday we had a call from the gamekeeper at Gorhambury Estate in St Albans to say that a stray dog (fitting the description of Socks) had been spotted there twice last week but they were unable to catch it. So we were there yesterday and today looking but it's a massive (and very beautiful) piece of land. We've put flyers in the doors of the houses surrounding the area. This call came as result of the article in the local paper this week, so it's great that people are spotting the story and trying to help.
SallyF
Thanks to Nik the Herts Advertiser has run with a really good story on Socks today. Also London Colney Parish Councillors and Verulamium Rugby Club helping out too. The rugby club is near the area in which a loose white dog has been spotted on a couple of occasions in the last 2 weeks.

In the local paper today...good luck..

Socks is two today: So let's make that extra effort today to get her home.
SallyF
We've had 2 separate sightings of a small white dog on the loose in the Shenley playing fields area - heading towards or near the allotments. 1 about a week ago and 1 today. It's great people are looking and phoning us. Clearly it would be good to catch this dog whether it's Socks or not. If you know anybody in this area please alert them. Thanks loads. x

A massive thanks to Nik who has written a great press release. Let's hope the papers go with the story. We have been out putting up more posters every day and the local pubs, shops and cafes have been extremely helpful in putting up our posters too. I've noticed that some posters are beginning to be taken down. This is very disappointing but am obviously busy putting them back up again! We have been stopping people locally in the street to ask if they've seen Socks. Most people have either seen the posters or the ads in the local papers which is great.
Unknown
Hopefully Sally will be able to update on the search. In the meantime, a press release has gone to the St Albans Review & the Herts Advertiser.

Sally, we need to find an angle for the media. Then I'll try to push it for you. Weekend radio shows are easier to slip things past producers - particularly if it's a presenter we know, or better still, someone who's dog-friendly. I'll check-out what's what tomorrow.Last edited: 2012-02-15 17:32:51

Keep trying! They may just get sick of you and do it to shut you up! :-) How about the medication angle? Do you get Heart Radio out there? Try that. How about knocking on every door/every other door, in the areas close by? Yes, it may take ages but word spreads by mouth as you knock on each door. Maybe a group of you go door knocking for a few hours at the weekend. Face to face means they will take notice and will probably tell others: the net will widen. Even every 3 or 4 doors. Neighbours know what next doors are up to, so if anyone has Socks someone must know. You are doing well! x
SallyF
Hi Nik, we did ask Verulam FM to do something for us but they didn't reply so we have to assume they didn't. There will be an ad in the Herts Review this week and next - they wouldn't run an editorial as so many lost pet stories so unless you can think of a decent hook? We will follow up Verulam FM if nothing comes from the Herts Review in the next few weeks....then I think we are starting to run out of ideas. Thanks

....Socks that is - not the dog warden!
SallyF
Hi thanks. Yes I've driven to Curo (spelling?) Park and delivered leaflets but to be honest the fence around that estate is pretty tight. I'll go back and do some posters. Yes we've contacted RSPCA and visited as somebody told me they don't bother to check chips (not true). I've been told by the people who take messages at the council that the dog warden will only contact me directly if she finds my dog - would just like to speak to her. It's the not knowing that's tough especially with this cold weather setting in....my children are so worried about her too.
Cheryl x
Hi Sally I live near you (farmhouse across field from napsbury) had your poster and have been looking for socks whilst out for walks with my dog! Have you driven to the industrial estate the other side of rail line (watling street towards park street) maybe put some posters around the local businesses - obvious but have you contacted south ridge RSPCA - maybe they can give you more info on the local dog walden - and if socks has been discarded of there must be a record of this! Really feel for you & poor socks - hugs - Cheryl x
SallyF
No, I can get through by climbing over the plough so I've been there everyday calling for her, leaving scent trail and I think she can crawl under the plough to get home if she wanted to anyway. The other route of course is back over the railway line. Thanks for helping with posters re. Network Rail Angus.

Could Socks be stuck in the blocked off section at the tunnel?
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Thanks Sally. Well done. Just because Networt Rail say no sightings, it doesn't mean its true (NR been wrong too many times) so yes, get those posters up wherever you can them. Angus will help you. Thanks Angus. x

I DO SO HOPE YOU FIND SOCKS SOON. SHE REMINDS ME SO MUCH OF MYLO MY PARSONS WHO DIED(THROUGH ILLNESS) 2 YRS AGO AGED 14. ITS THE WAY SHES POSING IN BED THAT REMINDED ME THOUGH MYLO WAS ALL WHITE TOO. I DO SO HOPE YOU FIND HER SOON.
SallyF
It's nothing to do with my dog specifically although I'm sure he doesn't want me walking all over his land every day. They also shoot in the field so perhaps it's a safety thing too. Doesn't help my quest though. :-(
dewilliams42
SALLYF WHY WOULD THE FARMER HAVE BLOCKED THE TUNNEL-SURELY HE CANT DO THAT? THAT SOUNDS A BIT SUSPICIOUS TO ME. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH.
DogLostAngus
Hi SallyF - I will text you my number - please give me a call later to discuss your suspicions as I am ok to take calls during the day.

With regards to the stations not wanting her poster up - put them in the car park and just outside the station so that you catch people on the way in and out.

SallyF
Hi, thanks, we have contacted network rail and they confirmed that they haven't seen any sightings. I also managed to get on the line and check myself on the day she went missing and have looked up and down it since even though clearly I'm not supposed to do that. Socks has always had the tendency to decide she wants more of a walk at the end of the walk and runs off but we have ALWAYS got her back within 15 mins with massive food temptation. I have no idea how long she would have gone on for though if I hadn't been persistent with her returning when she did this. Unfortunately this time we lost sight of her as the climb up to the railway line and over the top was too steep/dangerous to follow quickly. The railway stations don't want her poster up, we've tried that. With regard to dog warden I've had a call from the person who takes her messages to say that they have not seen our dog but this has not been reassuring given that the council only admitted to me several days after my first call that the warden had been on holiday and that her job role had been severely cut back anyway. There is a possibility she could have been run over and discarded. I drive up and down these roads every day. I do have one suspicion however don't want to discuss this online and not sure what I can do about it so would be good to chat over the phone...
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
You are doing brilliantly. Well done! I want you to rule out the railway line, can you do that? You say that is the only way to get back now; does this mean you can see the tracks and walk near yourself? If so, without getting on the line, can you check along the whole stretch? Also you need to poster heavily at the stations and put posters in the view of drivers if that is at all possible, or let them know Socks is missing. A driver may have seen her near the line and info may be useful. Also, communters may have seen her from a train? Speak to local paper, article or advert? In regard to the dog warden, phone the council and log a complaint. This way they have to respond in writing so the dog warden will have to answer to this. But, try and complain to the council now over the phone and ask for a supervisor or manager to take your call. You cannot wait. No matter who the dog warden, they are accountable to the council. Now, would Socks normally come home if she could? Yes. So think of all the reasons why she cannot get home? Target those reasons. Again and again, if need be. Where did you last see her, what was she chasing? How far would she have normally gone before coming back to you. What distance? Then check for holes. If she is down one, she could lose weight and pop back out herself, hopefully, It does happen. These are hardy little creatures. What else could have happened? Was there anyone else around, any vehicle? Keep thinking and postering. You are doing so well. We are all pryaing for Socks and you.x
SallyF
oh yes and have adverts in local paper....

Still no sightings of Socks. Have been walking the area every day since calling for her. The farmer (Hedges Farm, St Albans) has in the last 48 hours blocked the only safe way through the tunnel under the railway line so now the only way home is back over 4 lines of railway track for her and makes it even harder for me to search. Have made in the region of 100 contacts which include rescue centres, vets, neighbouring councils (my own council dog warden (herts) will not make contact with me directly despite numerous attempts). Terrier expert said that they can only help if we know which hole she is stuck down (we have hundreds near us many of which we have investigated). Been to gypsy sites, created Facebook page. Offering cash reward. Have postered all over area and have in the last few days targeted schools. Any new ideas?

Sorry to see that SOCKS MISSING 4 YEARS is missing.
  • If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
  • Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
  • A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (36430)
  • Obtain a missing poster by clicking on View poster above. Posters are very important so start postering now!
  • You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
  • Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
  • If your dog has been stolen inform the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number (CRN). Send an email to stolen@doglost.co.uk.
  • If your dog is picked up and taken to rescue kennels, it can be legally re-homed after seven days. Visit rescue centres in person and do not rely on checking by phone alone. Other people may not recognise your dog by your description, so give them a DogLost poster.
  • Keep us updated by keeping your dog's page up to date and check for posts from helpers who may have suggestions and possible matches or sightings
  • DogLost is free and anyone asking for money to find or return your dog is not volunteering for us. If you are concerned about an approach you have received, please email admin@doglost.co.uk
