I have the same sentiments as the owner of Lily- except, we were lucky, I had phoned so constantly that the local cat and dog home immediately recognised our little dog when she was brought in by the dog warden. Yet the dog warden never contacted us- although we had left clear details with the local council - and she was found the next village over. There seems to be a lack of information sharing or even checking of records.

Statement from Lily's owner:
I would like to offer my sincerest thanks to everyone who has given their time to finding Lily! The campaign of three weeks has seen support from volunteer groups/individuals and media. It is with sad regret I have to inform you of Lily's demise!

Lily was found on 6 January 2012 in a poor state and taken in and cared for by a kind lady in Bury. Lily was collected by the Dog Warden and taken to M...anchester Dogs Home where she was kept under observation until Monday 16 January 2012. A decision was taken by the residential Vet to put Lily to sleep due to her failing condition.

There are many questions which have been raised as to the procedures followed by both the Dog Warden Service and Manchester Dogs Home. It would appear confusion and poor communication led to Lily not being identified during the ten days in care by either agency following her being collected.

I am in the process of liaising with local & National media, firstly to express my gratitude to all those involved in the campaign to find Lily and secondly to raise the profile of the invaluable work by Volunteers, Wardens & Rescue Centres.

For the record, I am not trying to aportion blame for the sad demise of Lily but I do want to highlight any failings in the system and address them accordingly. This course of action is pursued in the hope that the good work of the Animal Warden Service and Rescue Centres is as efficient as humanly possible. Improved communication can only lead to better identification and more people being reunited with their animals. Ultimately the dwindling charitable funds which are generously gifted and made available to animal rescue centres can be used to ensure that their limited/over-stretched resources benefit unwanted animals and not wasted on those who's owners are desperately trying to find them.

Lily was unique! My rock! I will never be able to express how much I loved her!

RIP Lily - I will see you again, one day but until then you will be in my heart and in my thoughts. Always! X

Thanks again for all your support!"
BADAW

I am so very sorry. Maggie, I wonder if you could maybe print these posts to give to owner later for some comfort? I'd like him to know that sometimes dogs know in advance when it is their time, and I suspect Lily loves her owner so much that it would have been too hard for her to leave whilst with him. I know this cannot ease the pain right now but it is something to think on later. Please tell owner that precious Lily had already earnt her wings. God bless you Lily, safe in God's arms, and bless Daddy Nick - you are forever together.x

I AM SO VERY VERY SORRY TO READ ABOUT LILY. RIP GORGEOUS GIRL XX

So sorry RIP Lily xx
Maggie
Its with VERY deepest regret that i have to be moving Lily to Rainbow Bridge.
A dog was found matching Lily's description on 6th Jan, the finder kept Lily at her home to wait for the DW to collect her. The finder took very good care of Lily in the 4 hours she was with them, she fed her, wrapped her in a blanket to keep her warm.
Thank you to the finders for the kindness you showed Lily and for taking good care of her, i hope this is some comfort to Lily's owner.

Sadly Lily was pts due to health problems , this couldn't be disclosed untill Lily's owner had double checked everything and i can't go into the reasons why Lily's owners were not aware of the found dog at the time.

Lily was a very much loved family member and she will be greatly missed.

My thoughts are with Lily's family at this sad time, im so so so so sorry for you loss.
R.I.P. Gorgeous Lily, run free little one, run pain free over the Rainbow Bridge untill that VERY special day when you and your daddy are together once again xxxx
Maggie

I will be going to Bury tomorrow {wed} I will take some posters with me and have a good look round the rock area and behind the rock, lots of places for a dog to hide in the back alleys etc, and I will have a word with the traffic wardens as well because they are based behind the rock. x
Maggie
A very kind lady went into Bury today to ask around to see if anyone had seen a dog that looks like Lily (she was in the rock area). A few people said they had seen a dog like Lily wandering around in the Rock Area yesterday!
She is going to put some posters around that area, which is FANTASTIC and i truely appreciate her help and everyone else's.
Can everyone pls keep a look out for a dog matching Lily's description in the Rock Area, this dog could possibly be in the newer part of the Rock !!

UPDATE: Comment taken of Lily's FB group from owner, sound positive!! and im going to bump her page again, this information as come due to the Newspaper article!!
"Just an update! I have had two calls regarding a dog fitting Lily's description. One from an old lady who had seen a dog wandering around "the Rock" area and going into the post office. She wasn't sure of the date but it was in the new year. The other call was from a man who had seen a dog fitting Lil's description in the same area on the 6th. Unfortunately he couldn't stay with her as he was going to work. He had asked a lady to keep hold of her whilst a dog warden could attend. The only information he could offer was that the warden attending was from the Wigan area!? I have contacted animal wardens and asked them to check the log for that against Lily's description (ref 255921) but I'm told ther was nothing fitting the description. I have also spoken to MDH, Leigh & Bleakholt today to check. My partners Mum-in-law is going to call in at Manchester Dogs home tomorrow to ensure she hasn't slipped through the net. A big thanks to all for their involvement and thanks for getting more posters out too!! "
Maggie

The more publicity this little one gets the better. Let's hope she gets in the paper, that would be fantastic. Make her so famous everyone knows she is missing. Remember to keep contacting the council and rescue kennels as they do forget. Make sure they all have posters. I hope there are no railways near there but if there are you need to check there. Poster all around them. Also check any local traveller sites, Highways Agencies for your roads, any gardens in the area, brambles she could be stuck in, any ponds? Quite possible someone has her so as Maggie & Star say, keep making her famous so she's too hot to handle. Let's get this baby home! x
BrianBolton
Has anybody tried Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary in nearby Edenfield?
Maggie
Hi Sk8, thank you so much for keeping us upto date with the situation with Lily, keeping doing what your doing, go to rescue centres in person when possible and checking the dogs yourself, you know what your dog looks like more. Keep postering the area and surrounding areaa, you really are doing EVERYTHING that you can do to find her.
I have just spoken to SK8's dad and they are still going to check dogs at rescues, still phoning around, still postering, alot of people are aware of Lily being missing and they are all looking out for her, which is great! Sadly no sign of her yet!
I have suggested to SK8's dad about making a FB group, which i feel is another great way of getting Lily out there, getting more people invovled in looking for her maybe helping with putting posters up,to me the more place Lily is seen the GREATER chance of her being found!! I will put the link to her group on here then SK8, her dad, freinds, family members can join.
Sk8's dad also said that he is trying to get Lily into the local paper this week, i have asked that he puts the link to it on here so we can then bump her page.
Maggie
I will contact Lily's owner tomorrow for update
SK8
I've been with my Dad over to Bury today. We have spent all day walking around searching and puting posters up and giving them out in shops etc. We Have a poster in All the pets shops in Bury Market. We've got some on lamp posts in the Market and one in the Metro link office window. We also went to pets at home and a few post offices, newsagents, shops, vets and animal charity shops with posters. We then visited Manchester dogs home and had a look but no luck there. we've been told to keep calling to check and they have a poster there too. We're looking to get something in the local press if possible.

On speaking with my Dad's partners parents, they do believe that somebody could have taken her in over xmas as everybody in the area is aware that she is missing but no-one has seen anything at all of her, so please keep an eye out for that. A freind was walking his dog in the park across at the time she escaped and he did not see her come that way or try to cross the busy main road.

Hopefully we will hear something in the new year!
Maggie
Lily's owners put a Ad on gumtree, i hope it brings some news of Lily x

Thank you for your help, its very much appreciated- You are doing a great job SK8, keep contacting rescues, vets, go to rescues in person if you can and check the dogs yourself, you know your dog better than anyone else, so i would always advise to go in person. Keep going it just takes one phone call to bring Lily home, your doing a fantastic job x
SK8
Thanks for your help and advice, and with the posters. I am currently working in Leeds but i'm hoping to get over to Bury sometime tommorrow with my sister if possible to have another search and hand out posters in shops etc. My Dad has contacted the National Rail about Lily. Fingers crossed we will hear something.
SK8
Hi bbg, Thank you for your help. I have followed all of Maggie's advice and submitted ads etc. I have asked my in-laws to put some more posters out today and will continue to chase welfare centres. Thanks to everyone for your continued support. Fingers crossed she's with someone!
bbg
Hi sorry there is still no news on Lily. Yesterday I called in at all local vets with posters i.e. Beech House and Reagans in Radcliffe;Armac and Vets4pets and Reagans in Bury. Sorry can't do anything now as am on stand-by at work until Tuesday.
Maggie
I've just re-sent info and advice to your dad SK8 :)
Maggie
Hi SK8, thank you for posting and for updating us about Lily - They need to keep contacting rescues, dog wardens, putting up posters every where! I did send you a list of places that you can put posters, also sent a link for you to find Vets in the area, also i would knock on neighbours doors, ask them to check sheds, garages just incase she's managed to get into one of them, if she likes being warm, that would be a likely place she could be. You are all doing a fantastic job and im sure all your hard work will pay off and you will have lily back home with you. I will put a ad on gumtree if thats not been done already now i know the postcode. Did your Dad contact the highways agency and National Rail? i know he said that they have rail lines near to where she went missing.
Keep postering!! xx
SK8
Hi, still no sign of Lily :( Lost on 28/12/11 in Bury 2 Parliament Place, BL9 0TW. The owner was visiting his partner's parents. He has since had to go back home to Scarborough due to work commitments. Lily is not familiar with the area. We have put posters up in the local area and his partner's parents are going around dog shelters in the areas. Lily has been part of our family for a long time, we got her from teh RSPCA around 12 years ago. She's freindly but very very deaf and old but still very much able to move around. We think it's likely that someone may have taken her in or she will have found somewhere to shelter as whilst she loves her walks, she also likes to be warm. Please keep an eye out! Thanks.
SK8
Hi, thanks for all your help everyone. It is my Dad's dog and i'm going to let him update the page with any extra information he has as i was not there when she went missing. From what he has said i understand that we have his partner's parents visiting dog shelters in the area and handing out flyers etc. Any info/sightings then please get in contact. Thanks.
Kaz
