Thank you for doing that whippet lover - any cross posting appreciated. Luci's owner its not too late. Sometimes people dont read their papers for a few days, or the penny drops a couple of weeks later. Please stay vigilant, and why not try for some publicity yourself, now we have set the ball rolling again ? Dog papers, and magazines may run something. Or what about those cheap womens mags that are about true life, and peoples story's, that are always after material? Worth a go? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you Sue for adding Luci to your website :) I'm afraid that there has been no news. At the end of May I saw someone walking a dog that looked so much like Luci, my heart was pounding! It's the first time ever really that I'd seen one that looked so much like her, but after comparing this dogs patches with the poster of Luci that I carry with me I realised that it wasn't her. My goodness though, I got chills when I saw her. It really shook me up. The sex, size & colour were spot on, but it definitely wasn't her. The search continues...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Candy, agreed laminating is expensive & yes it's very annoying when they are taken down. It's amazing how long they can last though, some of the posters I put up when Luci first went missing are still pretty ok (a bit faded but still readable & you can still see the photo) I'm amazed. Hope your beloved Dolly is home soon. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Ali, sorry Willow's poster have been ruined. I laminate Luci's posters. Sorry that you've had no new sightings, how can they just vanish? It's so disheatening not to get any news. Thanks whippet, no we can't give up on Luci. She is somewhere. Concentrating on a 10 mile radius sounds good, I'm afraid I don't know which places in particular to suggest since she really could have gone in any direction and could have been travelling for days/weeks/months. A scared lost whippet could cover alot of ground, every where round here is fields & woodlands full of rabbits. She could have also been picked up by someone in a car, the last two people to see her were both in cars and saw her near the road. I would imagine though that most people driving in the lanes would live locally. My poor angel, I just hope that she is okay. I shudder to think of what could have happend to her. Postering is really our only chance of finding her, so let "Operation Luci"continue! Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Laminating them makes them last longer but it works out more expensive and if someone takes them down it is frustrating. Come on Luci, come home. Dolly 6.2.05Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

That is good that people are asking about other whippets. We had better watch out as someone will be asking about our Lizzie who is similar. Seems the posters are doing some good, what about spreading the net further. Any suggestions of somewhere just further afield? we will go out and help poster. We can look at a map but you know the area better than we do, we thought of a 10 mile radius from where Luci disappeared as a beginning. "Operation Luci", we cannot give up on this beautiful girl.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks guys. Sorry have not been online for a few days. Thanks whippet for reminding Whippet Rescue of Luci. Yes Toledo I feel helpless to, I don't know what to do next except keep continuing to poster. They are working because I had a couple approach me the other day asking if this was the missing whippet I was walking, I said no that these were her mum & brother. Also last week Luci's sire was being walked in Hitchin and someone went up to the owner and asked 'is this the missing whippet?', so he replied no she is his daughter. Good that people are thinking of Luci, though worrying that Luci doesn't actually look like the other whippets but I'm still pleased. Whippet owners all round the area are going to be quizzed about their dogs :) Sounds great Ali I'd be delighted to watch Willow & Luci chase round like mad things together! Thinking of Willow, really hoping you get some news soon. Hey Candy, hope 'Dollys Directive' gets lots of support & really hoping you'll be reunited. Take care.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks whippet, I really hope with all the new helpers looking out for Luci I'll get some news. Thanks to you, this site & others I now have people up & down the country looking out for her. Sorry Ali you've had no news about Willow, really hoping you get some very soon. Yes Luci being used for breeding I was worried about straight away as her sister had just had her first season, I & other people round the country have been looking out for ads for whippet pups. I truly hope that isn't what has happend to her, but I know that there's a good chance that it might have. My poor Luci, I really hope that she is happy where ever she is. Hoping more than anything that I'll find her. And that you Ali get your beautiful Willow back. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear Sam Luci is such a stunning and distinctive looking dog - I would recognise her if I saw her. Have not seen any whippets like her around here but will absolutely keep my eyes open. Also, make sure people are also looking for puppies like her as she may well have been used to breed with by now. Keep looking for whippet puppies for sale. As you know, they can fetch alot of money so if she was not speyed then this could be the case. Buy all the dog mags, local and further afield papers. I prey for you ( and I ) to get some good news soon. Take care, ali xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sam let's hope the new poster and new helpers may shed some light on the whereabouts of Luci. Nothing we have done in the area has brought results so perhaps Luci has been taken out of the immediate area. We have spread the word to lots of whippet show people and I know you have whippet people on another site looking. As ours are piled up here beside me I can imagine what it must be like to be missing one. I'm sorry Candy & Ali that Dolly and Willow have not been found, I wish you all the luck in the world on your searches. Sorry to hear about Gert. I agree it's best to have closure and be able to grieve. This not knowing is a horrible feeling, it seems very likely now that I shall be wondering forever. Dear Sam Reading your remarks on the anniversary of luci's disappearance made me so sad. I can not bear to think how you must feel a year on. It is a week to the day that Willow has been missing and I hve cried all day. I can empathise with you deeply and I hope and prey that someone will one day re-unite you. She is a beauty - like my Willow. Try to find some peace in that she is most probably curled up on someones sofa ( if anything like Willow ) and is being loved. Is there any way you could print 2000 + notices and get friendly with the local sorting office? They could do a massive delivery for you. Surely it wouldnt be too much to ask? Thinking of you - thankyou for your kind message to me also. Ali xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sorry you haven't found Luci yet but don't ever give up hope. I'm sure you will be reunited with her soon. I have experienced the pain of losing a much loved dog but I found her two days later. Unfortunately she had got onto the live railway line but at least I was able to grieve. I never thought this before finding this site but I actually think it must be worse to be missing a dog for so long. Obviously I still think about my dog Gert every day but there was some closure at the time. I feel so much sympathy for all of you who have been looking for months/years on end but dogs have been reunited successfully years on. Therefore I suppose that although there's no closure, you can also never give up hope. I think if something awful had happened surely you would know by now so that must be of some comfort to you. Someone has probably fallen in love with her and doesn't know about you or doesn't want to part with her. It's all so difficult but I really pray that you will find her safe and well very soon. Thanks so much for calling, I'm sorry I was out walking the dog & forgot my mobile. I'm so gutted she wasn't Luci, it sounded so much like her. They even said that she's a bit larger than a normal whippet, which you could tell that Luci was going to end up on the slightly larger side as her siblings have. Every things seemed right, the colouring & age. I'm so disappointed, I really got my hopes up. Such a shame. The lady said that she'll keep Luci's photo & look out for Luci since she attends whippet racing events. Very nice lady who wants to keep the whippet, says she's absolutely lovely. Thanks again for calling. The search goes on...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hm well that widens the area. Also wondered about wandering the area with Lizzie, one of our whippets, who is something similar and asking people if they have seen one like her. Think we will take another visit during the Christmas break to see if any of our posters are still up around the farm. We certainly have not given up on her, every dog show we go to we ask around the whippet exhibitors.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi whippet, the first information we got soon after Luci went missing was that she was seen heading towards Lilley. But we later found out that she had been seen in Kings Walden after the initial sighting. The word of her being missing spread, they are a dog loving community & the thought of a 10 month old whippet being out on her own meant people talked & looked out for her. Posters were put up every where but there wasn't any more news. I don't know how many houses there are in Lilley or Kings Walden but population is about 370 for Lilley & 950 for Kings Walden according to the 2001 census. I've no idea where Luci is now, I never thought I wouldn't find her. I didn't really walk Luci in those areas so she had no idea where she was. It would seem that she couldn't retrace her steps home, so could have been running scared in the wrong direction for many miles. She could have ended up in Preston, Lilley, Hitchin or many other places depending on her route. So I'm not sure where the best place to leaflet would be. If only there had been another sighting from another day. It's just bizarre that she has vanished. I was sure someone would catch her & ring the number on her collar. Such a shame I didn't get a bigger response from the article in the paper. Thanks for not giving up on her :)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Sam hope you are feeling better. You say Luci went off in the direction of Lilley, would that be the first place she came to the way she was going? We are thinking of leafleting around the area in the hope that someone knows where she is, so would Lilley be the place to target and do you know approximately how many leaflets we would need to do all the houses?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi guys, sorry I've been away so long. Went on holiday I meant to tell you but in my usual rush of leaving things to the last minute I forgot. I picked up some very nasty food poisoning, I'm only just starting to recover. Thanks for your thoughts Candy, and thankyou whippet for everything. x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks everyone for all your help. Sorry you guys have flu whippet & Toledo. I put up extra posters on Sunday in Billington, Slapton, Eaton Bray, Eaton Green & other areas in between. There were still lots of Luci posters up, but now there are even more. I've had no more calls about Luci. But I live in hope of getting more news. Thanks for all the offers of help, all I can suggest is putting up more & more posters to keep Luci fresh in peoples minds. With such distinctive markings, hopefully if someone sees her they'll recognise her from all the posters & call me. x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Not able to do much this weekend but wonder whether we should have a big campaign from Breach Wood to Lilley. Maybe put flyers through all the doors or even knock on doors if need be. Thanks, don't worry I'm not giving up. I know that Luci must be somewhere. Yes I did send Luci's poster to all the vets but that was a little while ago so would be worth doing that again. Yes the dog warden told me that dogs from Luton go to the Nottingham kennel. I have spoken to them before but can try again. I've phoned everyone imaginable who might have picked up the dead dog but no one has. Since we know the dog was wearing a collar, someone must have phoned the owners directly. Thanks for putting up more posters, thank you so much for all your help :) x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Did you send Luci's details to all the vets? It would do no harm to send them again, Luton, Dunstable,Hitchin, Leighton Buzzard and anywhere else around. Also did you know that strays from Luton area go to kennels in Nottingham, Bob's owner would know the tel no I think. They may keep records of all the dogs they have rehomed. Keep at it Sam Luci is somewhere.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to the greyhounds in need dog show and gave out flyers and hopefully raised awareness of doglost by talking to people. The people had come from as far as 60 miles away as well as locally but all took posters and said they would look out in their areas. We entered 3 of our dogs in the show to support the charity and personally had a good day and came home with 3 prizes. So besides working the crowd we had fun too.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks yes I will get on to the Highway agency/dog warden about the dead dog. Mead Open farm is on Stanbridge Road in Billington, Nr. Leighton Buzzard. Thanks for offering to help, I'll search the road for the dead dog and then later I can go back to the sighting at Mead Farm. I didn't get to speak to anyone there because it closes at 5pm, would be good to speak to people there and get a poster put inside somewhere, it has a shop and a tea room. I doubt I'll be able to get there before 5pm tomorrow, but can do on Saturday if not. Will keep you informed of any other calls I get.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sam we are so pleased that Nik was able to publicise Luci for you, we knew she would be the person to contact. Not sure where Mead farm is but know it is around that area, will check it out but the bit about car boot sale and caravans sounds familiar, we postered Louis by a place like that. If you need any help tomorrow ( Friday) or Sat let us know. Get onto the Highway agency for the area where the dead dog was seen, think they or the local dog warden should be able to help there. Sending you a PM with tel no so you can ring if you need help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Great news! There is a great article in this weeks Herald & Post about Luci, it's in a great spot in such a widely circulated news paper! The photo looks great, I'm so pleased!! The paper came out today and I've already had 2 calls! The first news I've had since Luci went missing. The first call was from a lady who said she saw a dog looking just like Luci wearing a black collar (Luci went missing in a black collar) on the 25th of August in the lane outside Mead Open Farm in Leighton Buzzard. She said Luci was by herself, the lady couldn't stop because she was being taken to hospital with an injured knee. I just went down there and postered all around the area. On the land next to Mead Open Farm there were alot of people living in caravans, is this what I think it is? Does anyone know? It's also close to fields which say car boot sale, there was a poster of missing jack russell Squeak and one for missing pug Louis. Then on the way back from Leighton Buzzard I got a call from a lady who said that she saw a dead dog by the side of the road with a collar on last Saturday. The lady was cycling with her daughter so didn't stop because she didn't want her daughter to see the dog. It's the road between Streatley and the road linking Hexton to Lilley, we went up & down several times but couldn't find it, it was pitch black and pouring with rain so it was hard to see properly. I'm going to look tomorrow in day light. I'll be devastated if it is my Luci but I'd still rather know that than be wondering forever about her. Thank you so much to Nik who made this news possible, and to Pat & Phyllis for getting Nik in contact with me. Will keep you posted :)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Candy, sorry for delayed reply but I haven't been very well. I'm afraid no I didn't get any responce at all from the ad in Countrymans Weekly. Or Your Dog. A real shame. Did you get any news about Dolly?.. Hey Laura, yes the people on DogLost are fantastic! Glad you haven't let that call get you down, those sort of people are the minority... Me to Whippet! Thanks again for all your help postering :) Someone must have her I'm sure, because if she had died I know someone would have found her & rung the number on her collar. I know it. There are too many dog walkers, ramblers, game keepers etc. around here for her not to be found. Especially if Luci was still wearing her blue coat, even if she had got it off Luci is blue & white so she doesn't blend into the landscape at all. Sorry for repeating what I've said previously but I just find it so hard to believe that Luci could just vanish the way she has! Oh my darling where are you?? x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Whippet, I really appreciate your help. As you say I know any decent Whippet/dog owner would go through the correct channels, which is why I'm sure Luci has fallen into the wrong hands. I can see why someone would want to keep her, she is such a truly lovely sweet beautiful intelligent dog. In the flesh she is breath taking, we would always be stopped on our walks by people wanting to tells us how gorgeous she is. Hi Candy, I was just going to leave a message on Dolly's page to say thanks for giving me the idea to put an add in Countryman's Weekly. The ad looks great, I really hope some good comes of it. The ad for Luci in Your Dog was a free ad, so don't really feel I can complain. If I'd paid for it then of course I would complain. As I said it still looks like Luci. But such a silly strange thing to do eh? My fault I guess a little because I sent them a landscape photo & it seems like they only print portrait ones (hence the cropping), which obviously I wasn't aware of at the time. I wish they had called me, I have lots of portrait photos of Luci I could have sent had I known. Oh well. Also someone called me today & left a message on the answer phone saying to not give up hope of finding Luci, but I'm afraid it got deleted before I listened to it (someone gave me the jist of it). So I'm sorry that I can't phone you back, I hope you read this. Thanks for your call...Take care everyone, Sam x x (ps. Hi Whippet, yes it was Mrs Jones. Luci's in this months Your Dog magazine, and also this weeks Countryman's Weekly so fingers crossed it'll help. I'm a bit annoyed at Your Dog mag because not only did they crop the photo I sent but they flipped it so what is infact Luci's right side looks as though it is her left!! Crazy eh? Obviously in something as important as a missing parti coloured dog, printing the photo in the correct way is SO important. But oh well, still better than nothing. It still looks like Luci which is the main thing, just thought it was a bit odd to flip the pic to make the page look better perhaps (??) like Luci is facing the text? I don't know why they did it. Strange. Thanks for offering to help. I don't know what else I can do other than keep putting up the posters. Just please keep an eye out for her. Thankyou...Sam xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks everyone for your messages, thoughts & prayers. I'm so sorry Nicci that you haven't found Amy yet, it's so sad to lose a dog at any time but at such an old age is very worrying - you must be frantic. I truly hope you find her safe & well. No Justine Luci is sadly not tattooed or chipped, and no I have no idea where she could be. The last time she was seen was the day she went missing, she was spotted in the next village (Kings Walden). I have postered every where but haven't had a single call. It's as though she just vanished. We searched all day every day for weeks, we were worried that she may have got caught up in barbed wire or brambles because she went missing in a coat. We searched far & wide but I know she must have been stolen or else we would have heard something. Luci was wearing an ID tag (which is impossible for her to get off by herself), even if she had died somewhere I know someone would have found her and called us. There are many dog walkers, game keepers & ramblers in our area; someone would have seen her. So really she could be absolutely anywhere. I'm lucky in that very few of my posters get ripped down in this area like I hear happens to so many people on here. I'd be so happy to get some news or a lead to follow up, I just pray I get lucky. *Fingers crossed*Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Luci looks a fantastic dog - I've just been looking at the stories of other whippet/lurcher dog stories and found yours. Your comments were really helpful thankyou for Amy. When you've had a dog for 14 yrs, you think that whn she is old and grey that her last days will be spent with you. Either she is enjoing her last months? of freedom or has been stolen. She was a rescue puppy, starting life as a Wimbldeon racer who did not run fast enough so was dumped. Today she leads a different life. We miss her. I've lived with her longer than anyone else I know (apart from my parents). My philopshy in life is "what is meant to be is meant to be". (for whatever reason). It is interesting to see Sherlock bones appearing time and again on these dog lost links.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

thank you so much for posting on Dollys' page Sam, I hope Luci is back with you very soon. You probably have done all this but didn't see it in your postings, Have you contacted Whippet rescue if there is one? and does the Whippet breed have a website they may be able to put her details and a picture on there if you contact the kennel club they should be able to put you on to them, just a thought. Best wishes Candy. Also Countrymans weekly did me a really terrific ad about the size of a postcard with pics and loads of words for ?45. it is a nationwide publication and lots of people who hunt and do hare coursing read it and you never know she may turn up at one of their meets. I can give you contact name and number if you are interested. Best wishes CandyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sharon I feel exacly as you do, we are so lucky that we have our most faithful friends by our side. I get so very upset. I never realised how many dogs get stolen or go missing until I logged onto this site. Sam, I had a whippet a few years ago, they are lovely dogs, I really feel for you but never give up, I feel sure she's out there somewhere, it's just a case of finding her and bringing her back home. Take care, my prayers are with you. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Sam I do wish I could help but I know I cant and thats what frustrates me so much. As I read that I sat crying, my 2 dogs lay fast asleep on the kitchen floor without a care in the world. Always thinking they will always be happy and cared for by me, they dont know danger and how their lives can change so quickly. My sobbing woke Star and she came over front paws on me a licked away my tears with such a deep knowing look in her eyes. Keep hoping and praying she will come back to you. Thankyou so much Sharon. I'm so very grateful for all the wonderful support everyone has given me & all the other missing dog owners. I'm so glad that this hasn't happend to you. This is such an awful empty feeling that I have had for the last 11 weeks 3 days, I can't stop thinking about my little Luci. Always wondering what she's doing, how she's grown, whether she is being taken care of & whether I'll ever see her again. It feels like I'm walking around in limbo. I still find it so hard to believe that it has happend. The other night my other dog whimpered and in my dream like state I thought it was Luci. I turned to my husband and said is that Luci? (Luci used to whimper to get in the bed with us, always asked first never just jumped in). Poor hubby didn't know what to say, then it suddenly hit me again that of course it couldn't be her. It is so incredibly upsetting. The worst thing is that I may never know what happend to her. I'll be wondering for the next 16 years. My poor angel where can you be? It's so very disheartening not having any news/leads at all, I hope & pray I get some news soon. You are right to be paranoid about your dogs, losing a dog is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy (not that I have one, but you know what I mean). Take care & thanks again...love, Sam x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Miasmum thats just how I feel. I too like yourself have not lost a dog in this way buy everytime I visit this place Im reduced to tears. I would do anything I can to help all these sad owners and innocent dogs. Iam very paranoid now over my dogs getting stolen I wont leave the house empty I always have someone at home. Im up often in the night checking on them and I have terrible nightmares about them getting stolen I often wake up crying and shouting. So if Im like that what are all you going through. I pray for each and everyone of you and I really really wish you all the very best in finding your dogs. If ANY of you need anything at all please dont hesitate to ask. Sending loads of love your way Sharonxxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sam, I hope and pray that you are reunited with Luci, too. I wish everyone could be reunited with their beloved pets. I am nowhere near your area, all I can do is look at all the different posters of dogs that I print out and look at all the dogs closely that I see whenever I go out anywhere. Please take care, thinking of you and everyone who are waiting..........xxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thankyou Miasmum, I'm glad you haven't lost a dog & are aware of the problem we have in this country. I had no idea about dog theft before I lost Luci, if I did I would have definatly had Luci chipped straight away. And I used to leave my dogs in the car when I nipped to the shops, it's such a shame that you can't. It's bad enough that people steal at all, but to steal peoples beloved dogs is just beyond words! I hope & pray that I will be reunited with Luci, I miss her so much. Take care...Sam x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Sam I haven't lost a dog and consider myself to be very lucky. I can only imagine what you all go through.....I hope you get your Luci back and also everyone who have lost their beloved pets, it must be so painful. I must be honest, I keep a very close eye on mine now and I don't take them in the car when I go to the shops. Take care and good luck. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Lucis owner can I say Luci is a very pretty girl, I realy hope you find her. I used to have a greyhound who I rescued from a life of racing then she was used for poaching and when she was not wanted anymore I gave her a very loving home 4 her last 5 years of life. She got very sick when she was 13 I lost her. Everytime I see a whippet or greyhound I think of her. Dont give up youl find her one day. Yes she is very beautiful. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
