I'm smudge's owner - Smorse - I came home to Reading yesterday morning and there has been no news of Smudge since. My daughter was interviewed by the Swansea Evening Post yesterday and we're hoping there may be a piece about him in today's paper. I would be very grateful if any local people read this if they could let me know if there is anything in the paper please. I can't praise Owl and her dog Whisper enough - they were brilliant and good company too. Also the local Fire brigade, RSPCA and Search and Rescue teams who came out to help - twice! It is up to Smudge now to get himself out into the open if he can and as soon as he is spotted I will be back there in a shot. Thankyou everyone for caring so much.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The team came back with sound equipment and camera mike, but whatever had been in the place where Morse was digging had gone. This warren is so enormous, and it does seem very likely that Smudge is moving around in it. If that is the case, he can get out and there is nothing more anyone can do until he is seen. If he surfaces, everyone in the area knows who he is. Everyone is watching out for him. Not a lot more we can do at present.

Got back from the Gower early this afternoon. We were feeling somewhat discouraged last night, but cheered this morning as we met a local man with his terriers. he reckoned he heard some muffled barking late yesterday eve and was off to search holes. Kathy and I and our dogs Morse and Wispa spent the morning quartering the ground and checking holes. Morse suddenly got very switched on to things and was working in tandem with Wispa, noses to the ground. At midday I left, but as soon as I was home I got a call from Kathy's daughter. Morse had continued searching, he found a hole and went absolutely crazy. There is some sound from down there apparently.Waiting to hear more, will post as soon as I know. The warrens there are vast and according to the local terrier man they are well over 100 years old. If no luck today, flour will be left at entrances to all holes in the suspect area, thank you Lesley for the tip. Any holes currently being used by rabbits won't have Smudge in.

22.30 p.m.  Tel call from Owl.  They have had no luck so far, but will carry on tomorrow.  Owl and owner would like to pass on their sincere thanks to the RSPCA and Fire Brigade who have been great and worked so hard.   I've passed on everyone's best wishes to them.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

16.10 p.m.  Owl has just rang.  They are still waiting for the RSPCA to attend to access if Fire Brigade can assist, information given to them earlier was wrong.  Wispa is doing a brill job finding rabbit holes in the undergrowth.  If it gets too late to start digging they will have to call it a day until first light. Owl will be staying with owner overnight.  Well done Owl and Wispa you are a stars.  Jan x    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Owl is with owner at the scene with her dog Whispa who immediately went to one hole. RSPCA have given permission for the Local firebrigade to attend. They are on their way now.  Phebe asks everyone to send positive vibes please....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Smudge's ball has been found by a rabbit hole, so at least the searchers know which area of the dunes he disappeared from.
