I don't think this is Sam, I don't think his head is big enough and he looks too pale. Thanks anyway.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am so sorry that Sam has not yet appeared, but please don't give up hope.  He may be snuggled up with someone while this bad weather is around and surface when it gets a bit warmer and drier.  Think positive thoughts. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Still no news on Sam - still have times when I get really sad and upset. I think I'm going to have to resign myself to the fact that he is gone (maybe the sea took him?)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello again,  Please don't give up hope, never give up hope.  He's probably curled up in front of someone's fire for the winter.  When the weather warms up he will be out and about more and someone will spot him.  Keep calling vets, wardens, police stations, local people/shops etc. etc.  He's there somewhere.  I hope he is found soon. I cannot believe that this lad is still missing, he can't have gone far unless someone drove him.  We are doing all we can - any update from the owners would help.  e.g. who they have contacted recently, any sightings?  Thanks.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Wendy, I am so sorry that Sam is missing after all this time, but please don't despair.  This site is fantastic for reuniting owners no matter what the length of time since their separation.  So keep your spirits up. I have emailed friends of mine who run a Newfoundland Working Group in Wales and hope that they will be able to rally round and help in the search for Sam.  I pray he comes home to you soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

One of the local vets received a call on answerphone over the weekend from a lady that had been on holiday in Port Eynon. She said she had sighted a loose Golden Retreiver in the area (no idea whether this is Sam). The vet lady has been very sympathetic over the last few weeks and said she would put more posters in the area, and she, like myself cannot understand why no-one has picked him up. I am still in regular contact with the dog warden/kennels/vets.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to Horton and walked towards Slade but no sign. I did wonder about the hill above the village as there are a number of houses and a static caravan site but didn't know how to get up there. Spoke to some council workers in Horton car park and asked them to keep an eye out as they are responsible for cutting grass and scrub all over south Gower. Also gave them a poster they said they'll put up in their base for their colleagues to see.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to Horton again today with dog, searched up to Slade and a way beyond including down among the rocks. The weather was good and we got to check areas we couldn't safely do on Sunday because of extreme weather. No result, but we did speak to a number of the locals and on the coast path we met the farmer who owns most of the fields there. He was very friendly and sympathetic. He and his dog walk the fields everyday and frequently do the shore below as well, and he knows various other people who are also constantly out and about offroad in the area. A good person to get onside.

Sounds like the same old collie - apparently he's called Bob and lives near the Ship Inn.  The man from the kennels told me someone spotted them on his CCTV - they went up and down his drive (on their own).  He said he only knew that it was Port Eynon somewhere but told the man to catch hold of him if he saw him.  I'd like to know where he's hiding, seems odd there's only been 3 sightings in over 3 weeks.  Sam is not fussy with his food and I'm sure if starving would eat anything. Thanks very much for your help owl - it's much appreciated.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I spent this afternoon searching and handing out flyers. Most people I spoke to know about Sam already, but I alerted a few coastal path walkers who weren't regulars at Port Eynon. I also met a local lady who has been helping search for Sam ever since he went missing. What I did discover which may be relevant is that there was a huge rabbit population along the coast between Horton and Slape/Oxwich and these poor bunnies have fallen victim to a myxi outbreak over the past 3 weeks. A couple who live there told me that they have seen a lot of dead and dying rabbits. This does mean plenty of scavenging for a dog who isn't fussy - and Sam's mum tells me he will eat anything. Re the sighting of a goldie with an old collie, there is a local collie who lives at the boat club end of Port Eynon beach and seems very friendly with other dogs. Do we know where this sighting was exactly? I'm hoping to go back tomorrow at some point and walk some of the path around Slape. If anyone else is planning to go, please make contact with me via Jayne or Sam's owner.

Folly  I have been helping the owner from day 1 and believe me she is not just sitting back letting others do all the work. I don't know her personal circumstances but maybe she is the sole provider for the family and has a mortgage to pay. Whenever possible she has gone back to the area to hand out flyers and search for him. Sams disappearance is tearing her apart so please don't be too hard on her. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I understand Follys point of view here but also I really feel for the owners, its not everyone who can tell their boss they will be gone for and unknown amount of time and can go without pay, not forgetting other commitments like kids that need to get to school etc. I think the owners are doing remarkably well given the circumstances and the help they are receiving is remarkable, even people like murphys mum who is doing an amazing job.  Poor Sam, I really hope hes home soon and tucked up in his bed with the people who love him xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I printed off the posters/leaflets and will be sending them out tomorrow to about 20 addresses in the Port Eynon area that I have got off websites. I've put about 4 in each envelope and a note asking if they could be passed on to shops/cafes/people.  Will post first thing Friday as I want them to get there for the weekend.  Wish I lived closer.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I find it incredible that the owner has gone home and not stayed to search for him. Whatever the reasons, if you want this poor dog back, get down there and do your bit. Sitting at home sending emails and making phone calls is obviously not working. I know this sounds harsh but there is no way on earth I would leave one of my dogs if I had lost one.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I phoned Greenfields kennels today and was told that someone reported a sighting of a Golden Retriever and an old Collie on Tuesday evening in Port Eynon.  I immediately telephoned my contact down there who said she'd go out straight away.  She said everyone was still looking and hopefully he will be picked up. I phoned the Dog Warden and Vets and informed them too. (lets hope this is Sam).Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Got two very nice replies from guest house/hotels at Port Eynon.  They are printing out the poster and one lady's husband and son are coast guards and they are well aware that Sam is missing. I'll keep emailing - what other areas are worth trying ?? Do not know the Gower peninsula at all. Fingers crossed he is sighted soon and you get him home. xx    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I phoned the Police and Dog Warden immediately he was lost.  The police told me that they don't deal with lost dogs! I also emailed and texted the Wave asking for a call out. I emailed the Evening Post and they put an article in on the Monday following the disappearance.  I spoke to the RNLI man in Horton the day after who said he'd put the word around, I spoke to an off duty policeman in Scurlage the same day it happened so I know that many people know about his disappearance, just don't know where he is unfortunately. Thanks everyone for your best wishes, my 21 and 20 children were really upset and couldn't believe he's gone off, but fingers crossed!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm on a golden retriever group where several people are very upset that such a lovely old boy is still missing.  One lister was in touch with a local radio station and the reply came back: ""The local station has just put out a request for any sightings or for any other information. They have all the details and numbers so hopefully someone has taken him in - I certainly hope so as the weather here has been pretty cold for the last week or so.The presenter I spoke to is a real animal lover and will pass the details on to the next programme to catch the early evening crowd.""  She then sent a further email to say another radio station (with a different audience) was putting out details, so lots of people on the lookout for him.  Another lister has spoken to the police and dog warden in the local area.

My A/L was used on taking the dogs away and unfortunately due to my personal circumstances I am not able to just up and go.  I stayed down until the Thurs night and spoke to everyone I saw.  Immediately after there were other dog owners helping me look for Sam, they were locals and knew the area but no-one saw him then (which I think is strange).  I would have stopped and slept in my car if there had been any sightings then.  I am in contact with a local - she says everyone is looking out for him still.  It was very distressing having to come away with only one dog.  I am still in contact daily with kennels/vets etc and haven't given up yet, he is a very friendly dog and hopefully someone is looking after him and will come forward soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just googled Port Eynon and quite a bit comes up so I have emailed a link to Sams page on this site to pony trekking centres and walking groups.  Will inundate the B&B's next. Not sure if this will help and I wish I could do more but so far away. This story has touched my heart - we have all had these elderly treasures and they don't want to be lost.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Really sorry to hear about this old boy missing in this cold weather.  Would it not be possible for you to take some leave and spend time in Wales to get the word round?  When I helped find a dog via this site I found that giving out the dog's details to EVERYONE I saw on my travels through the parks really worked.  On the morning we found the dog I was with the owner who was getting calls every five minutes on her mobile about sightings which took us to the right area, then suddenly we saw her dog walking towards us.  If people have the info on a piece of paper in their pockets it would help them to phone straightaway from their mobile rather than look for a poster.  Some people I talked to claimed not to have seen the dog, but then remembered they'd seen her the day before etc.  Really needs memory jogs for people used to seeing dogs wandering around.  If you're able to get to Wales & update the site too if you can then I hope many other local people will come out to help you.  Good luck from another golden retriever owner.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for your help everyone.  I'm finding it all very frustrating and cannot understand how Sam 'disappeared'.  I'm phoning the Dog Warden/vets/kennels every day but apart from the sighting on Tuesday - nothing.  I wish the person would have kept him with them when they found him and phoned the vets, maybe he'd be sitting at home with 'Shakira' (my other Goldie) now.  I would really appreciate any help with distributing leaflets as 4 of us went down the Sunday after and posted loads but I live in the Midlands and work many hours.  Sam is an excellent dog, always by my side and doesn't deserve to be 'lost' in an unfamiliar place.  Please help if you can.  Thanks very much.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've been to Port Eynon and Horton today, was out on beach and dunes for a long time witrh my dogs, doing a recce and talking to people. Not enough people know about Sam. What we need is a leaflet drop to every house in Horton (it's a small place) and some more posters in Port Eynon and possibly Oxwich. I'm currently offline at home, my computer is at my friend's house and I try to log in once a day. If anyone local can help me with a leaflet drop etc, Sam's owner has my contact details. There is a LOT of cover where a dog can den up out of the wind there, and a thickly wooded valley between Port Eynon and Horton.

Can't we get a mention on local TV, radio station, etc. This poor old boy really shouldn't be out in the cold for this long. With it being half term week we should be taking advantage of the all the extra pairs of eyes that could be out there looking for him. Just can't get the thought of this old boy out there all alone out of my head. Please, please can something be done before it's too late x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have just spoken to Wendy. There was a sighting of Sam wandering alone down the coastal path at Horton End on Tuesday. This is a route that Sam is familiar with as Wendy had walked him up there several times. Unfortunately the person who saw him didn't pick him up but she did phone the local vet who made a note of the sighting but never got in contact with Wendy even though they had her details. Wendy has been in touch with several people in the area who are looking for him. Let's hope he is spotted again soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sams owner has just called back. She lives in the Midlands and was on holiday when Sam went missing. Posters have been put up all around the area and she left her number with several locals who were helping her to search for Sam. She said she last saw him just outside the chip shop on the dunes. She home now but went back to area on Sunday. She is constantly ringing vets, police and dog warden. Does anyone with local knowledge have names of rescue centres in the area. Have given owner my email address so she can keep in contact. She thinks he may have just kept following his nose and got lost or wandered into the sea. If he has drowned is it the enviromental people at the council who would pick up the body. The other thing that keeps crossing her mind is that a man stopped to talk to Sam and made a fuss of him and she wonders if he took him. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sorry to hear your beautiful old boy has gone missing. He can't have wandered far at his age. Now that a photo is on site you can print off his poster by clicking on to Dog Poster 1 at the top of this page you need to be logged on. Get posters put up all around the area he went missing from. Send copies to all vets and rescue centres and inform the dog warden. An old dog like this will probably be handed in to the vets so please ring them regularly or better still visit them in person.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
