So pleased, heard about this in Austria on holiday :-) Have just shed a little tear, how wonderful to have him back and better still unpeterbed by his ordeal. What wonderful ladies to have spent all that time gaining his trust, they deserve a medal.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all for your messages. Barkley is doing really well and apart from sleeping off his adventures, alot, he is behaving like he has never been away! We took him to the vets for a check up, he has got fox mange (which has given him a bald and itchy tummy) but other than that has a clean bill of health. He is out enjoying the sunshine in the garden today and doing his favorite thing, rolling around in the grass. We gave him a bath last night and so he is back to being white with brown patches as described, instead of the grey dog he was when he came home on friday. We hope you like the updated picture, taken this morning. Thanks again to every one. Lots of love from Abigail and of course Barkley! xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, well done Jackie and Pauline, that was brilliant! I wish I could have been there to see it! Your right in describing his character thought I haven't met him YET I can see it written all over his gorgeous face. I have lived with pet Hounds for many years and they are quite unique and like no other canine- I am a total convert. The way his mum and dad described him just confirmed how special he was. Isn't it sad though that whoever owned him before couldn't appreciate what a special boy he is? You did a brilliant job.XXX. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So pleased to see Barkley in the blue. He reminds me so much of my Merlin I kept a close eye on his thread & even though I couldn't help practically he was in my thoughts. Well done to Pauline and Jackie for having the patience not to grab him and wait for him to decide to be caught.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Our only regret about capturing the evasive Barkley is that we had to hand him back! What a beautiful dog he is.... he captivated us with his doleful expession, joyful attitude and gentle nature... and what a smart dog he is! Contrary to what some might think, Barkley was never going to give himself up... oh, no.... it was only good luck that enabled us to outsmart him in the end..... But for all those onlookers in the street, it must have seemed very comical with Pauline and I opening doors, closing doors and crawling on all fours (well, to capture such a smart dog you have to act like one!). But looking at all the e-mails it seems like the whole of West Midlands has been involved in the hunt for Barkley.....so well done to all the dog spotters... and what great owners Barkley has.....let's hope he realises that now and stays put.... I think this rather proves my theory that dog owners are lovely, friendly people always prepared to help each other out.... Barkley, you were hard work but worth all the effort! Bye for now. xxx Jackie and PaulineLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When Abigail called me just before midnight last night I cannot begin to explain how happy and relieved I was to hear Barkley was safe. This boy had really got under my skin because of his Hound ways of being so resourceful and canny! The thing is with these hounds is that they can be so notoriuos for their wandering nature but they try so hard to survive when they are out there. I thought I could get a decent night's sleep but I was so excited I couldn't! Dear Barkley you have tried so hard not to show yourself to me but the game is up and I am going to see you soon and I will bring you some nice edible presents.DON'T DO IT AGAIN-OK?!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

BARKLEY IS BACK HOME! He followed a couple of ladies home from the fields in Bartley Green and with alot of patient coaxing and alot of biscuits they eventually (HOURS later) got a lead onto him. We were in contact with them but left them to it as they had obviously got his trust and eventually the phone call we have waited four weeks for finally came. Barkley is behaving like he never left and is so tired I think he will sleep for a week. We are delighted and can't thank everyone enough for all your encouraging words, advise, help and support. A big thank you especially to Jackie and Pauline (who got him)for all their love and tenatious coaxing and coolness under pressure, Natalie and Julie, BeagleMum, Safeno and Natalie and Sue, for all your hours of trailing the streets for our dog and wonderful advise. Barkley sends his love to everyone.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went out again at lunchtime for an hour and a half and met up with Dog Warden. No more sightings unfortunately but he is covering such a large area he is probably one step ahead of everyone else. Hopefully there will be some good news soon. Just to remind people not to try and grab him as apparently he has been so spooked by previous attempts. Was out on the patch at 7.15am this morning and have driven all around Bartley Green but not a thing. Have stopped a few dog walkers and told them and left contact details after showing them the poster. Stopped a Community Support Officer who is reguarly walking that area and he has taken details. He will inform all his colleagues. Put a poster up in Ley Hill Health Centre, spoken to some construction workers involved with area regeneration scheme. Have walked various green areas and Ley Hill Park and sat around watching and waiting. Dear Barkely despite all my efforts I am probably the one person who hasn't set eyes on you! Sue, it was Beaglemum that told me of the sighting as I am in the area, so presumably came from them. I managed to catch the local postie today (Bartley Green) and gave him a poster to put up in the office. Been round Genners lane, Jiggins Lane, Frankley Lane, and Church Hill this morning, to see if he is hanging out round the reservoir in the mornings. No sign of him. :-(Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just heading off to work now with a scout round on the way. I think there is a hint here with the neice. Two girls that I spoke to at Woodgate school yesterday say that he followed them, they had seen his posters, but they tried to catch him and he ran off (I have told them to leave him now) They were about 10. Maybe he is attracted to children. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Barkley is such a lucky boy to have all you great folk helping to find him. It's possible that a trap might go up soon so if people are planning to go out searching it would probably be a good idea to check first with Abigail or David where it's positioned so that people can stay away from that area and then hopefully Mr B will take the bait. Just got home after driving around his 'haunts' for one nearly two hours but nothing to report. Really disappointed but expect he is taking a rest somewhere sheltered and quiet. Although very built up housing estate and a large one at that there are a few isolated spots where he could hide and in the dark you have no chance of seeing him. I am going away for a few days tomorrow and I feel quite down about him not being found but will keep checking on here and hope for some good news. arriety-the owners seem certain it was him that was in Clent Way as a lady who lives there and is one of the searchers confirmed the sighting. The other sighting of him in Lye Avenue which was in the early hours was confirmed by a lady who we showed a poster to and she said he was following her niece home but she couldn't catch him. I really do hope that they are that certain that it was him. Hurry home Barkley.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I forgot to say before - whilst in the fields behind Clent Way on Sunday, I saw a large tri coloured long haired dog running loose in the fields. I could see, at a glance, that it wasnt a hound but people, when they know you are looking for a lost dog, will say they have seen it when, in fact, they have seen a different dog. Some girls also told me they had seen 2 loose dogs on Lye Avenue (they described different dogs to Barkley). So just wanted to point out that it is a housing area where a number of dogs appear to be loose at any one time. All possible sightings have to be checked but nothing worse than chasing red herrings.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If I dont have to go up to Cumbria this Sunday, I will come over to look again. I would appreciate any up to date sightings so if any are posted on here can someone text me on Sunday on 07773 252350. Apparently, Barkley likes other dogs and I know Lotty trailhound would go up to him if we saw him, as she always recognises other hounds. It may give him a bit of confidence to meet a friendly hound. Having been there on Sunday, I am not so worried about the motorway but the busy A roads really worry me as he is obviously travelling a lot.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It was as Safneo stated in Genners Lane where he was seen this morning. Not too easy to leave food etc as at the moment he has such a range of area that he is covering also most is very intensive housing estate so not too easy to leave anything down as it's likely to get nicked!! If it was certain that he has a regular routine re time and place then it would be more straightforward. The sightings in Bournville were definately Barkley as his owners were there at the time and he was only feet away from them but wouldn't be caught. Come on canny boy let's get you home.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I couldn't be certain at the time the dog I saw was Barkley so I asked Barkley's dad. Most dogs will stop if called by any name and the dog I saw was scruffy-looking I thought but as it was dark I couldn't really get a good look. Is it possible I saw a different dog? :-(Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have been told by two individual people that there is a dog VERY similar to Barkley that is run in Row Heath and Cofton park. It belongs to a young lad who has been approached and asked if it is his dog. I wonder if this may account for some of his Bourneville sightings? Sounds like a lot of folks out on his trail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Three sightings again in Bartley Green so he has moved back there but he may be moving between the two areas at the moment. Big worry is that he is having to cross the Bristol Road to do this. Great that you've seen him again Abigail. Have you plotted the sightings on a map? Sometimes the 'triangle' that they move in can cover quite an area. It might just give you a clue to where his next move is likely to be. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

UPDATE. Barkley is back in Bournville. We had a call last night and went up there, he was spotted on Mulberry road, and we saw him ourselves on Bournville lane, but he went into the park and we lost him. After that a couple saw him back on Mulberry road and were trying to (very gently) tempt him in wth some food. We have left some dog food with them, and they are going to see (if he comes back) if they can get him into the garden at the back. Thank you all for your searches in Bartley Green. Yes I agree Beaglemum, I went up early Sunday morning and there are lots of places he can lay low. Just behind Lye Ave there are some garages and sheds, its like looking for a needle in a haystack. I think poster power will be Barkley's best bet, we just need the right person to be at the right place at the right time. Sorry it wasn't one of us Sunday. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sue, who organised the Waseley walk went across to Bartley Green after the walk ended and spent a few hours going around the areas where he was seen. She took her Trailhound, Lotty with her just in case she could draw him out. No luck unfortunately. She said there are some quite dense areas of gorse and undergrowth etc where he could hide. Another Waseley walker also went out and had a good look around but again no luck. I would think probably that he has found somewhere he could hide in the daytime and probably comes out at night. I am going back up to B'ham at some stage this week so if he isn't caught by then I will go out during the night when things quieten down and hope for a sighting. Hurry home Barkley boy.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

After having tried to 'grab' my own missing foxhound and being bitten for my troubles I was given lots of advice and the most sensible of all of it was DON'T try and catch him. Make sure you have a tin of food with you and if you see him again put the food down, move away a few feet and sit down sideways on to the dog, don't make eye contact and just sit for as long as it takes for him to come for the food, talk quietly and gently and hold your hand out until he comes to sniff and DON'T make any quick movements. Try and get him to make friends with you again and maybe slip a slip lead over his neck (make sure you hold very tight to the other end!) but it's better that he sniffs and moves on rather than trying to grab him, missing, and frightening him and making him even more wary of going to people. I'm sure you've been told all this but just in case you haven't!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all again. We had a sighting at 2.30 this morning in Bartley Green, on Lye Avenue, so he is still in the area. We have contacted all the neighbouring dog wardens, just incase he wanders out of the area. We are going to try and get up there tomorrow to put out some posters in the area. Will keep you all posted of any other news, Thanks again and lots of love Abigail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Isn't that SO annoying when they just will not come to you? Day off tomorrow so I will get out and do some looking and postering, Bartley Green not too far from me either. We have the posters up here in reception, on our vans and posters plus print outs of Abigal's reports on our staff room wall, a lot of people aware of and looking out for Barkley. There is a walk planned on the Waseley Hills on Sunday but I probably can't get there as I am back down in Glos. for a few days. My friend Sue from Trailhound Welfare has organised it but I am going to get some posters to her so that they can be handed out to people who turn up for the walk. The Waseleys are not too far from Bartley Green (just 1 junction further along the M5) and I thought it would be useful for people in the area to know about Barkley. I have put a poster in my local shop in West Heath and my vets' in Kings Norton today before I left B'ham. Keep safe Barkley until your mum and dad can get to you.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello. Thank you all for your messages and suggestions, Sorry I have not been back in touch we have been out looking for Barkley. The dog warden called on Wednesday afternoon and we went to meet her in Bartley green and we saw Barkley but couldn't get him to come to us. He was in fields near the m5, just off Clent Way. He kept returning to the same spot next to a ladies house, so the dog warden advised we left him over night and they would put a trap down in the morning. In the morning he had not returned to the same spot so the trap was not put down. We left it quite quiet as we didn't want anyone trying to approach him and scare him out of the area. We had a couple of sightings yesterday morning in the same area but this time on Adams Hill and Genners Lane. The dog warden is focussing on that area today and will keep the trap on the van so that if she spots him again it is to hand. We are heading over there in a bit to have a look around ourselves. Thank you all for your suggestions of changing his discription to Foxhound. That would be fine, he does look just like a foxhound but is smaller we think. So he is probably a cross breed? We have ammended our posters to include the dog wardens telephone number and with a note to be careful not to chase Barkley out of the area, He seems to be moving on fairly regularly but hopefully he will get tired and hungry and loose the energy to move on again. Thanks again to everyone. Love Abigail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Having owned Foxhounds (as pets) in the past that is what I thought when I first saw the poster! Been driving around the area today but nothing-he could hide anywhere as it's such a built up area.I am going out again shortly and can get out in the morning but have to go back to Glos. tomorrow lunchtime. Same as Safneo, please have my mobile number just in case. It's 07980 115943. I can respond in minutes if need arises. I spotted the news item last night when I got back to B'ham so hopefully lots of people will be aware now. Keep safe Barkley.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

...97319-20481996/ I've left a message for owner to get back to me about Barkley's description. The article says that he's a Foxhound, which I thought he looked like from his photo, but he's registered with DL as a Lab X. So I'll maybe ask for a change to this after I've spoken to them. Thanks Sue...Sue let me knowif owner wants description changing.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello everyone. Thank you all for your messages. The places where Barkley was spotted are on Friday 15th Feb, approx 8.30pm, Hay Green Lane and Woodlands Park Road, then in Woodlands Park, All in Bournville. On Saturday 16th Feb he was seen on Long Nuke Road in Northfield at approx 7am. On Sunday he was seen going along Long Mynd Road and into Merritts Hill Park at approx 10 am. Some one also thinks they saw him on Saturday in one of the fields on the otherside of Merrits Hill Park. I have highlighted all the areas on a map and will add any other sightings. Thank you Sue C I did get the information you sent about scenting and mapping and Thanks Tara9 for the suggestion of checking RSPCA Barnes Hill. We went in there on Sunday and left them with a poster. Barkley is his own worst enemy, so many people have said that he was so close but because he is nervous he wouldn't let them get close enough to grab him. I have also been in touch with the dog warden and given them all the info about sightings, so they should be keeping a look out for him too. Lots of love. Abigail. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi I have been out postering this morning on Cofton Park which is close to Northfield, and where the Rae heads for, and Lickey Hills, postered car parks and nice lady in tea shop on the golf course side of Lickeys said she would display my poster 'with pleasure' a lot of dog walkers stop there for a snack. Lovely sunny day hopfully lots of folks out walking their dogs and by this afternoon a whole lot more people will know about Barkley and will looking for him. The visitors centre was still closed when I was up there so if anyone can get a poster there and tell rangers that would be a good idea. Where about was he spotted in Northfield? That is not far from me. Double check RSPCA hospital at Barnes hill know. A lot of people who find dogs take them in there because they might not know where the nearest vet is but they know where that is. Everything crossed Abigale for good news real soon x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Abigail. Don't forget to get a map and pin point where the sightings are as most dogs stay within a triangle. This will help you to be able to put food etc down in specific areas. Did you get the info I sent you about scenting and mapping? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I should be in Birmingham next Thursday so if he is not found by then I will 'scout' around the area. I will be staying in the Northfield area and I go across Bournville Thursday evenings as I go to a dog training class near there. I have emailed our class trainer who gets around the area a lot as he does dog sitting etc. I will put a poster up at dog club also on the notice board. We train in a Church hall and other groups use it so a good few people should see it. Hope Barkley is home by then though. Keep safe Barkley boy.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello everyone, Thanks for all your messages. We had another sighting in Bounville last night (Friday) and a possible sighting today in northfield. I hope he is staying in those areas as we have been round today flyer-ing and handing out leaflets. We had an article in the Birmingham Mail today as well, so that should get his picture out there to alot of people. Its very frustrating, we get a sighting but by the time we get there it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Hopefully someone will get a hold of him soon. I will keep you posted. Lots of love. Abigail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello everyone. Just to update, we have had about 9 sightings of Barkley in Bournville yesterday (Tuesday). We got ourselves down there but couldn't find him. Then today we had a possible sighting in Longbridge? We think he may be travelling along the river rae and popping up during the day to find food. The people who saw him say he has his collar and tag on still but no lead, so luckilly he has lost that somewhere. Anyone in the Bournville area, Longbridge area or along the river rea please keep an eye out for him. We will be travelling along the river on our bikes tomorrow to look for clues. If any one has any ideas please let me know. Thank you all. Abigail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you Millies mum. Any support we can get is very gratefully received. We are constantly trying to think up new things to do. We have contacted our local newspapers and put some spin on the story and they seem to be interested, so hopefully our story will get out to all of brum. We are going to spend this weekend trying to trace any possible routes Barkley may have taken, there are so many back alleys and hiding holes near us. Also flyers going out everywhere we go. Visiting dogs homes and ping off posters to all the vets. I just want to say a big thank you to everyone I have spoken to in person or on the phone for all your kind words, advice and support. It really does help to hear ecouraging words, when sometimes you feel like you could loose hope. We just want to get our Barkley back in the warm. Love Abigail.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Abigail = good to have you on board. please keep us updated It is vital you keep postering and postering as much as you can to reach that one person who has information on your dog, also try and trace his steps or potential journey as much as you can as his lead may have snagged as he ran off. deliver little leaflets in the area where he went missing asking peopel to keep an eye out on their travels and, remember, we are here if you need any help at all. good luck and keep looking!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
