Sounds like you've done everything you can to find him, Nicola.
Its anyone's guess what goes on inside a cat's head but most are good at looking after number one. He'll probably just wander back home and you'll never know the back story.
Hopefully, his microchip will bring him back to you. Definitely fingers crossed.

Hi, thanks very much for your comments. Somebody on a local forum has just suggested this site to me - I didn't realise it would accept cats.
Everything at home was completely normal on the Sunday morning he went missing and it was an ordinary day, no changes, it was just me and him - Tolly got up as usual for his breakfast and then went outside. I've had him since he was a tiny kitten and he's 5 now, he's always been a very 'routine' cat and I expected him home within a couple of hours for his mid morning snack but he never returned.
The last probable sighting of him was in a garden at the edge of his territory area that morning - he never went far, usually within calling distance. I did everything you are supposed to - door knocked, flyers through doors, posters up everywhere (and renewed since), sheds and garages checked by neighbours, walked around for hours calling, searched undergrowth, put him on websites, social media, told local vets, checked with the council etc.
Have had a few possible sightings over the weeks but they've never led to him (most have been similar looking cats, others I never found). He is microchipped and I'm hoping he is still alive as his body hasn't been found or scanned. As you say, he may have become disorientated and someone's taken him in somewhere (which is a nicer thought than him living semi-feral!), in which case I'm hoping someone might spot him outside somewhere as although the majority of his time he spent in the house, he'd go mad if I tried to keep him in for some reason when he wanted to go out - he's very demanding (he's a Burmese cross)! Fingers crossed and thanks again. I miss him terribly.

He's been missing a while. Has something changed in your household - new cat, dog or baby; change of working hours or other routines?
Cats sometimes rehome themselves because they are put off by a change in their circumstances.
Janiejewel is right, its worth asking and postering locally. You might find he's found someone else, nearby, to take care of him.

Neutered cats tends to stay within their own territory. He could have chased something an then became disorientated. An someone may have picked him up, and is keeping him/ Also try an ad in a newspaper, and ask friends, and neighbours to shar e as well as Doglost. Paws xd.
