I went over to Eastbourne today and met the lovely Rufus and was amazed to see how well he looked and that all he wanted was to play with his tennis balls!
I took down posters from Willingdon Park Rd and Freshwater (Tesco Express) shopping area. Then to the park to do those but found most had been taken down already. Thanks so much to those who have taken them down!
I have added a reunited photo and one of Rufus with his 13yr old Retriever pal (Please refresh page to see them)
They are both such a credit to JN who never stopped smiling all the time I was there!

I'll try Jayne: I plan to go over to Eastbourne tomorrow to meet Rufus! I will try to get a reunited photo for everyone to see.
Needless to say JN is ecstatic, very relieved and probably has a smile from ear to ear! I just wish I had been there to see the moment of reunion :)
Rufus just wants to play with his tennis balls and seems to be fine but will, of course, be checked over by the vets.

Just one more request to all you lovely helpers ..
Please would you TAKE ALL THE POSTERS DOWN!!!!
It's the very best job I will ever ask you to do!!
Many, many thanks to all who helped. Your support has been amazing and it's great to know we have such a wonderful team now in Eastbourne. We could not have found Rufus without your invaluable help.

(Just to mention that someone has just given a very generous donation to Doglost. Thank you so much to you, whoever you are, as Doglost relies on donations to carry on their work)

Whooo hooo! Just had an excited and relieved JN on the telephone. Rufus has been FOUND and is absolutely fine!
He was found by a lovely guy called Andrew who rang JN. She went straight down to the park and Rufus came to her as soon as she called him.
To say I am relieved is an understatement!
I can't thank you all enough as without your help and local knowledge Rufus may not have been found.
Many, many thanks to all who have given their time up to poster and search.

Thanks Quincy: Would you clarify please? When I was in Hampden Park the other day Mary and I were at the skateboard area (in field behind the cafe) and I believe this was where the sighting was.

Looking on the map I can also see Eastbourne Sports Club/E.R.Athletic Club behind those fields. Also the David Lloyd 'complex' area (Rosebery Avenue)
Does anyone know if there are posters there please? If not, perhaps someone would be kind enough to put some up? Thanks.
Quincy
Been to Hampden Park looked behind skatepark scrambled through undergrown looking by any fallen trees where Rufus could hid. Sorry no sightings. He will probable lay low in the heat of the day. But at least there has been a sighting

Know where it is its the old firing range will go there now its good place as there are woods and tennis courts close by
Quincy
Is that the old disused skateboard park area. I can take a trip down now. Will take a look near to David Lloyd and Sainsbury's as they are very near to the old site
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
I have just had a call from JN who says she has heard from someone who was searching in Hampden Park this morning that Rufus was seen yesterday near the skateboard area. Apparently it was some children who spotted Rufus but they chased him and he ran off.
JN is going to try and track down the person who heard this and will update us later.
PLEASE, if you see Rufus, do NOT CHASE him. He is very scared and we really want to try and keep him in the area. Just keep him in sight to see where he goes and call JN on the number above. Thanks.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks 6cats: That's really good of you, good job done. Lots of people know Rufus in the Friston Forest area as that's where he is usually walked. JN went up there to get the word around & handed some posters out too. The Golf Club is a great idea as lost dogs are often attracted to places like that (church yards as well) prob because they are relatively quiet. Thanks for letting your students know and for all you are doing.
Jayelle: Rufus is neutered, has a tag on his collar and is microchipped. Having searched JN's garden I now believe that Rufus went under the fence as there is a hole between it & the neighbours garden. Unfortunately the neighbours garden is one of the few in the road that does not have a gate on it so he was able to get out to the road.

I had not realised that some of the Eastbourne area is covered by the animalwardens DW service but they do now know about Rufus. They are very good & if he is handed in to them I am sure they will contact JN asap.

Come on Rufus. We need you to show us where you are so you can go home.
BorderCol
Is Rufus entire? Just wondering if he jumped out of the garden in the first place to follow a bitch? Might give a clue as to direction.

I have this evening put leaflets into St Annes Vets along the Willingdon Road, Highcroft Vets in Polegate and the Co-Op in Lindfield Road. I was advised by both practices to put leaflets into Willingdon Golf Club and at the top of Butts Brow. They both said that, in the past a fair number of dogs have been found on the Downs even though it is a fair way for Rufus to travel. They also said that if somebody had 'taken' him they might abandon him in 'open space' I have seen lots of leaflets around today and, I have also asked colleagues that live in and around the area to keep and eye and an ear open, as well as the students I work with. I will laminate a couple of big posters tomorrow and go up to Butts Brow. Lets hope that tomorrow is the day he comes home. PaulineLast edited: 2016-05-16 21:45:30 by 6cats

Just an update. Sorry to say no sign of him yet. Finally tracked down the Wealden Dog Warden...but no news.

I drove over to Eastbourne this afternoon before I took Roxie to agility. I drove through Lottbridge Drove, Brassey avenue, Hampden Park Drive (which is where I parked up) and left via Decoy Drive. My intention was to just drive the area and then go up to Butts Brow but I am unfamiliar with Hampden Park and wanted to get a better idea of the area that Rufus actually went missing. I have to say that I didn't see one poster, but having said that, I tried to use the less used paths as I thought that may be where he could be holed up. I did come back via the lake. Sadly, I saw nothing. There are a lot of places that are quite overgrown where he could have taken refuge although it's very brambly and can't imagine it would be a very comfortable sleeping place but with the lake and the streams that feed it, he would have a water source? I did speak to a dog walker, who knew all about Rufus and she said that all local houses had been postered but, as I say, I didn't pass one visible poster on my drive in or where I parked so may be an idea to get a few more up around the park, given the amount of visitors there will be there at this time of year. We could do with a current sighting to give us an idea of what area Rufus may be in...hopefully the posters will do the trick. Really hoping tomorrow bring some good news.

Thanks Mary, that's reassuring! I agree that we could do with more large posters up near the skate park. I did put some on the bins there but had also run out of them too.
It would be a big help to have some large posters up in the streets surrounding Willingdon Park Drive and the park, especially roads such as Roffery Avenue, Woodland Avenue, Linfield Road, Stanmer Drive, Decoy Drive and Kings Drive. It's a lot of area to cover but we can't be sure which way Rufus went to the park or if he is still there. Posters anywhere else are also good to have as the more that are up then the more likely we are to get a new sighting. Poster power works!

Many, many thanks to all who have helped search and poster already and continue to do so. Local knowledge is always needed with searches and your help is invaluable to myself and a great support to Rufus owner. Thank you :)
Mary
I was in Hampden Park this afternoon and the posters put up yesterday are still there. There were some in the woods but more are needed by the Skateboard Park and beyond. I ran out of posters but can return with some tomorrow. In the afternoon sun you can see many places that Rufus could be holed up in. I'm no expert in these matters but wondered if it would help if JN Parks her car in the same place in the Park, each time she goes. It may encourage Rufus to go to and stay in that area until he is ready to show himself.
Quincy
Sorry not able to look today but hopefully will be out tomorrow. I think everyone is hoping for a sighting keeping everything crosses. I did put a flyers at the vets today.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks Kezcole and egizzy.
If anyone has been to Hampden Park today would you confirm that the posters we all put up yesterday are still there please? Especially the ones at the entrance with the green shelter/bench. I ran out of posters before I could put them in the area of the woods so if anyone can help with putting some up there it would really help please.

Sorry to say that there do not seem to have been any other sightings of Rufus yet but must keep positive and hope he shows himself soon.
egizzy
Walked Hazelwood Ave up footpath to Huggetts and along Church road this morning then the A2270 down to Huggetts Rec then back along Huggetts no sign of him :( sadly
Kezcole
Morning, I went out late yesterday evening in & around Hampden Park & the surrounding area, Also put up some more poster's, As i was putting up one in Church Street a gentleman came up & spoke to me & he was aware of Rufus missing so thats encouraging, Lets hope he shows himself soon..Keep safe Rufus x

Lots of dogs stay in the same area even if you don't see them often
He will be able to see you though.
Hope maybe someone in the area might befriend Rufus and he will get home safe soon

Rufus has been seen twice in Hampden Park area. (we think it was him) but both of these sightings were over a day and a half ago.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks for commenting Rufusownercontact (JN's daughter who's in Maidstone area) and for letting us have your mobile number on the posters. It's a great help.
Talking of mobiles, if anyone has found or finds one in Hampden Park please let me know as one was lost today by a searcher.
Mary: there have only been the 2 sightings that we already have on here.

I had a chat with JN tonight who said she was losing hope but I again tried to explain that getting a lost dog home often takes some time. I said to her to think of all you lovely helpers out there searching and postering at all hours so hopefully she will not feel like giving up as I am sure that we can find him one way or another.

JN will be contacting the Dog Wardens tomorrow and it is always possible that someone has found Rufus and had him over the weekend. He does have a tag on his collar so they should have been able to call his owner (also poss that it cld hv bn knocked off his collar when he was hit by the car)
However, I do know that (as there seems to be a totally non existent Dog Warden service in Eastbourne at weekends) the Police will often advise anyone who finds a dog to keep it until Monday and then call DW's. I know we would all be very relieved if this is the case! I will be keeping everything crossed that they have him.
Stay safe handsome Rufus. Show us where you are and we will get you home to your mum.
DogLostZoe - Area Volunteer - East Sussex
Sorry to see Rufus is still missing:-( I will head over that way early tomorrow morning. Am I better sticking to Hampden Park area do you think, or shall I venture over the other side of the road to Butts Brow? I know Butts very well, but not Hampden Park. X
Mary
Hi Rufusownercontact, Where was the latest sighting please?
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
Well done team Rufus!
Rufusownercontact
Hello to all you wonderful people who have spent so much time and effort trying to find Rufus. We just wanted to say a really BIG THANK YOU to you all. Rufus has not turned up yet, which is a shame; but with so many sightings of a dog matching his description...it is surely a matter of time. Mum and the family have been amazed by your response and are truly humbled by you unselfish actions. Thank you, thank you , thank you!!! We will keep you all posted on how it turns out.
Quincy
Taken note of your comments Clarkey and yes he could be away from Hampden Park. He was heading towards Huggetts Lane which is the opposite way to the park and he could get on some farm land off the housing estate near Freshwater Square. As he was a stray hopefully he is a little streetwise. Hope family dont get too despondent because it can take them a few days to reappear - when they get hungry. We will all keep looking please assure them.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks Owl, Riverlady, Ella, Kezcole & Quincy. That's kind of you and yes, there are so many places Rufus could hide himself (just in the Park) it feels like searching for a needle in a haystack at the moment. He could also be moving around the streets and gardens locally.
I've just got home from Hampden Pk where I hv handed out & put up nearly 100 posters. Met with Mary, who is a real superstar and was in the park 5am'ish with me! Thanks a million! :) Introduced Mary (& her hearing aid dog) to JN who arrived a bit later. Also met JN's friend who is printing posters & giving much needed support to her.
Special thanks to Tony at Lakeside Tea Cafe (very dog friendly place!) who was extremely helpful & put posters up.
JN is doing as much as she can but does not feel as positive as yesterday although I did try to reassure her & explain that it can take a while to get a lost dog home.
Must thank everyone else who's going out searching for Rufus. It's lovely to know there are such kind people helping. Thank you :)

Bit more info on Rufus: he is a young dog & was originally rescued fm Ireland where he was a stray for some time. Went into a rescue centre where JN got him from. He is neutered, microchipped & has tag on collar.
Rufus is well known in Friston Forest area where he was regularly walked so he could end up there as not that far. He is not very food orientated but may come to a group of dogs if he sees them. Being that he has bn a stray it's quite possible he will hole up & come out when it's quieter but I could be wrong!
So please DO NOT CHASE RUFUS but if he comes to you/your dogs then sit down & try to keep him in same area and call JN asap so she can come to you.

There is also no guarantee that Rufus is still in Hampden Park so perhaps we could get more posters up in other areas please. Anywhere & everywhere local so more people are aware of him. That way we may get a more recent sighting.
Would be good idea if anyone helping would put a poster in their car window pls.

Vets, police, microchip companies have been informed by owner but it's been impossible to get through to any Dog Warden service yet.

Just to hear that if anyone sees any comments on Facebook re sightings please would you put them on this page as a lot of people are not on there & it's important to keep this page up to date. (It's free to register with Doglost & you can comment when logged in)

Just need to have a new sighting or 2 now. Come on Rufus, please show yourself so we can get you home to your worried mum. Last edited: 2016-05-15 13:33:45 by Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex

Went looking just after 5.00am today looked all round park all back streets off park up to Freshwater square on to A22 as far as Willingdon roundabout and back to Woodland Avenue and all roads leading off Willingdon Park Drive no sightings. Stopped all people out walking dogs and they will keep an eye out. Now got flyers and will post through letter boxes and put on car windscreens
Kezcole
Drove around area late last night & this morning, also looking around a building in Stanmer Drive (fist right as you enter Willingdon Park Drive,(Hampden Park entrance end) which is where BT park their vehicles, this area has a lot of green space here....I will go out again looking, I do hope Rufus stays safe & shows himself..Owner must be distraught xx
Ella
Walking my two around Hampden Park now. Not overly busy as the sun is not out so hopefully he's not been driven away from the area. There's always so much more undergrowth than you realise when you need to look for something!

Chloels96 I think the comment you have just put on here is for a different dog. You mention the name Honey and she? and not Rufus and he.

Thank you to whoever handed honey in. She has been found now and is all well. So grateful for everyone for helping.

That's good to hear Mary and well done to you and Wendy for checking the park again with posters in hand!
I'm just about to drive over to have a look around Hampden Park and streets etc. just in case Rufus is up early.
If you see any new sightings mentioned on Fbk please would you leave a comment on here? (my mobile does not take Fbk!) I'll check the page later to see if any there have been any. Thanks.
Let's see if we can find Rufus today!
Mary
The posters that had been put up earlier were doing there job, as a lot of people I spoke to this evening had seen the posters, those that hadn't, I gave posters to. There was a running event in the park and the organiser took a poster for the competitors area. The undergrowth is very thick in places and it is impossible to check it thoroughly. I chatted with Wendy who had also gone there to search for Rufus but Sorry to say no further sightings. I do hope he shows himself again soon.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks Jayne. For yr info: Owners family donated to Doglost this morning.
Many thanks to all who have been helping search Hampden Park today but sadly no more sightings. Owners did have 2 telephone calls today saying that Rufus had been seen in Hampden Park last night (Fri) & early this morning so that's a bit reassuring. JN's daughter came over fm Maidstone area to search which was lovely support for JN who is very worried & upset (I'm updating page as owner not any good on computer)
Owner JN has been doing as much as possible although obviously restricted *
(I have been asked by family, who are not local, to express thanks to everyone for helping)
There are posters up in area now so more people are aware Rufus is missing.
Just hoping that Rufus stays safe and is found quickly.

If that is area in park its where they compose looked around near the gates couldnt see paw prints or any disturbance as if crawled under gate
Mary
I have printed off some more posters and will go back to the area. I searched the undergrowth near that bus stop about an hour after the sighting. There is an area that has high fencing that I could not get into. Fingers crossed Rufus is found soon.

Local radio station? They can be very helpful in broadcasting alerts in these situations. Hope he's found safe soon.

Would be a good idea to go to the park area before it gets dark or earlier in the morning he may come out of hiding then? Hope he is found very soon x
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Lady has just posted on Fbk that 'Someone said was sighted in the bus shelter before 8am this morning opposite willingdon Park drive x'
I have passed on the information to JN's family who are going to have a look now. Just seen more info that it was 'the entrance to Hampden Park near Willingdon Park Drive off Decoy Ave at 7.40am' Another comment saying "Went past there after 8.00 no sign then came at it 3 times from different directions could be its moved into park"
It is quite possibly Rufus as he has been walked there before but not very often. Thanks :) Last edited: 2016-05-14 15:33:44 by Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex

Thanks Owl, Quincy and Mary. I have just got back home. Have put lots of posters on lamp posts/telegraph poles in Willingdon Park Rd (such a long road!) .. at Freshwater shopping (Tesco Express) place & handed out loads of small posters to people including 3 postmen. Many knew about Rufus but had not seen him.
Stopped a young lad to give my last poster to and by chance found out it was him (Joel) who saw Rufus get hit by the car. It was at the junction of Dene Drive/W Pk Drive and Rufus bolted off up the pavement (towards Huggetts Lane end) He went out to look for him but could not find him. Joel has offered to help poster and search. Many thanks!

I'm very grateful to those of you who have helped so far but think we need to try and get more people actually looking in gardens and local area if possible.
Rufus' owner is in her 80's, is diabetic & not very mobile so will need all the help we are able to give her please. JN drives with Rufus to Friston woods for his walks so he does not know the immediate area well. JN as she was out in the early hours looking for her boy which I have to say worried me!
Not sure when I will be able to go back over to Eastbourne again but will do my best.

Rufus is most likely to be holed up under bushes or anywhere he can hide out of the way to recover from his shock. He may, or may not, come out later when all is quiet, but I am definitely hoping that he is somewhere quite close to home. He likes other dogs and would probably come to them.

Stay safe Rufus and please show us where you are.
Mary
Have also been spreading the word in Hampden Park and checking undergrowth but no sightings. Put up a poster at entrance opposite Willingdon Park Drive. Last edited: 2016-05-14 12:20:28 by Mary
Quincy
Just got back from Hampden Park sorry no sightings plenty of dog walkers spread the word none of them have seen him. He may be closer to home than we know hold up in a garden
DogLostOwl
I would really recommend a door to door flyer drop for this one, asking people to check their gardens and hedge bottoms. A dog who has been hit by a car often does a mad dash then holes up somewhere, and is likely to stiffen up overnight from bruising and stay put for a while. So searchers need to check under all cover in parks, churchyards, verges.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Thanks Quincy. I hv just added a mobile number of a relative .. she is not in area at the mo but can help by taking calls in case of any sightings etc.
I have asked that if there are any sightings that they can be put on this page so we all know what is happening.
I am about to go over to Eastbourne (although can't stay too long) and will take some posters with me. Posters are going to be the way to let everyone know that Rufus is lost and the way that we will, hopefully get some sightings of him.
Quincy
Had to come home just in case there was an update. Been all round Willingdon Park Drive and into Church Street where there are so many big front gardens he could be laying low in any of them round all the back roads up to Jevingdon and back past Hampden Park there is a post at the entrance to park from lower part of Willingdomn Park Drive. Sorry to say no sightings

As he will be so scared, he is probably hidng somewhere hope he is found soon

Good morning and many thanks Quincy. I have had an email from JN saying that there is still no sign of Rufus. I believe it is the Hampden Pk end of W Pk Rd. .. and no, I can't use internet on tel either.
I'm hoping Rufus will not have gone far after his knock with the car.
If anyone else is able to help search and/or print posters and put them up in the area it would be a big help.
Quincy
Making my way out now will drive round the area but will have to contact by phone as too long in tooth to use internet via phone x
Quincy
Have there been any sightings this morning. I was wondering which way he might have gone. If its top of Willingdon Park Drive its possible to go left towards A22 if he heads right down Broderick road he could head towards Hampden Park.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Hi Mary,
All I know is that someone told owner that he had run up Willingdon Drive(think it's W Park Drive isn't it?)
No other info I'm afraid. I'm hoping to get over to Eastbourne tomorrow so will update if any sightings.
Owners family member is also going over tomorrow I think.
PS I believe he is usually walked at Jevington. Last edited: 2016-05-14 01:07:14 by Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
Mary
So sorry Rufus is missing. Is there a better location for where he was last seen?
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
I have just spoken to owner of Rufus who is in her 80's. She has told me that she had taken him out for a walk this morning and had returned home. However, a little later Rufus jumped out of her garden and when searching she was told by someone that they had seen a dog hit by a car (which did not stop) and that the dog ran off. Rufus is friendly but not food orientated.
Owner JN searched with her other dog and friends all day but there has been no sign of Rufus yet.
I have given as much advice as possible over the telephone and have just sent out our Doglost advice email. JN is going to leave some bedding in the garden so that if he comes home he has something with a familiar smell to settle down with.
I will try to find out if one of JN's friends is able to give us a mobile number to add to the page.
I have explained that if Rufus is not home by tomorrow that it is very important to get posters out so that sightings can come in.
If anyone is able to print and put posters up in the area it would be very much appreciated.

I am keeping everything crossed that Rufus is not too badly hurt (he did run off afterwards) and that he will make his way home by the morning.
