Vicky, Worsley Woods are not near Pilkinton's. They are close to Junction 13 where the accident happened in March of this year. Walked around the woods for about four and a half hours. Spoke to a lot of Dog Walkers etc. and put some more posters up. The site is 30 hectares in size. I will ring you tomorrow. Paul xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Knoxy - Is this the woods near Pilkington tile factory? I've been away with work for the last couple of days and will hopefully be able to make it home tonight. I still need to poster Butterstile and Hilton lanes in Prestwich so if I make it home I'll get out there - good luck x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The sighting by the Bury dog warden was over two months ago. Prestwich, Phillips Park and Whitefield are all very close. Where he was seen in Prestwich is not an area where it is the done thing to have stray dogs roaming around. If he was still there I am sure it would have been reported to the dog wardens by now. I noticed an Irwell Valley walk as I was near Wardly today I will go for a walk along it, it is open fields with the motorway in the distance. Kearsly is not far from his home and Whitefield, Phillips park area is before Kearsly. He must be around somewhere come on Rahner be brave and show yourself again. I'm going to get some emails fired out to printing companies to see how much posters will cost - I think as the area of sightings is become bigger we need to get as many posters out there as we can and unfortunately it's not something my printer can manage. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had a drive around Butterstyle Lane, Prestwich put a poster in the Chineese takeaway. A few of the other shops would'nt display one. There are some more shops round the corner from the chineese maybe they will display one-I ran out of time. Took a poster to Dogsrus which is not far from Butterstyle Lane. If someone has some spare posters perhaps we could meet up over the weekend and poster around Prestwich. From the area of the original car accident upto Phillips park is virtually all countryside. Yes Annette has mentioned Prestwich in a call to me yesterday - as this is where the in-laws live I'll try and get round this weekend and poster all shops and pubs in the village. Annette also mentioned a particular road name so I'll head down that way also. However, I do still think it's worth us keep checking Phillips Park too as that was the most recent sighting. I'm thinking of just going to a printers and getting 500 posters made up and just spend a whole day postering from Phillips Park to Prestwich (will have to check funds first though) I'm hoping to get up there again today. Had a phone call from a Bury dog warden, who said she was called out to catch a dog ,who she thinks was Rahner. This was about two months ago, she mentioned his red collar and that he was covered in mud and agitated. The sighting was Butterstyle Lane Prestwich, this would link to recent sightings. Her phone call came as a result of an emailed poster received yesterday. I have given details to Knoxy. Thanks once again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Been up and down Phillips Park Road West again to-day. Put a few more posters up etc. Also made some enquiries in other parts of Whitefield and Prestwich quite close to the area of the sighting. I went back to Phillips Park last night and noticed there have been more posters added on Park Lane. I also noticed that there is a different contact number. Should I be added this number to any posters I'm putting up? When walking around the park I noticed there are a lot of empty buildings etc so had a look through windows and over walls into barns to see if I could see any sign. There are numbers on gateposts so Bri has suggested I get in touch with the council to see if I can get the ordnance maps so I'm going to try that today. Brian knows the area much better than I do so he's suggested a walk today starting at the river and coming back into the park. We are also going to check Clifton - once again I'll be taking posters. I hope I can report back with some good news later on x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Put some posters up last night down Phillips Park Road. This is the road which runs between the entrance to Phillips Park and the motorway footbridge close to the Pilkington Tile Factory. The ground was quite wet after the rain and I was unable to find any tracks in the mud. It might be a good idea to start putting food out along the footpath as this would appear to be the closest point to the sighting by the owners family. This path is quite remote and for personal safety it would be best if the person leaving the food was accompanied by a second person. The path is very remote. On a course today and Wednesday so I will visit the area again on Thursday night. If anyone needs any assistance, please contact me by PM or e-mail. Regards, PaulLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

the taxi driver who ped me off last night lives on Park Lane which is the road that leads to Phillips Park. He said he saw a wolf like Alsatian dog a couple of weeks ago when he finished his shift. It was 3am - I'm going to posters in at the base and put more up on the residential side on lamp posts. And yes I can come out and help tonight, I'll see you there - what time are you thinking? Brilliant work guys! Smokey are you scent trailing the area they've been seen? Wonder if this ties in with the "black alsatian type dog" seen on the 16th of April as that was seen at 6.30 am. Have asked wagon drivers to keep a look out as they are passing.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just returned from the area of the sightings. Afraid nothing positive to report. Spoke to 4 dog walkers all within half a mile of the blue bridge that crosses the motorway into Phillips Park. 2 walkers reported seeing only 1 long haired GSD during the day on Wednesday. This dog was reported as being 6 to 8 years old with no collar. This could be Rahners friend!!. I have also been down to the foot bridge that is closest one to the River Irwell. I spoke to a Farmer down that lane and left my number with him. He said he hadn't spotted any stray dogs during the past week or two. I have left posters down by this foot bridge and on the trees estate. I am working the night shift tonight so I will visit the area late tonight and very early on Friday morning between 4 and 6 am. What good news, these frequent sightings at one place make it sound as though these two dogs may well be "based" very near to this bridge if seen there three times in one day. Almost sounds as though Rayner is keeping watch for his master's car doesn't it, bless him? Let's hope this leads to something positive at last and that both dogs are home and safe. Wish I was near enough to help find them, my admiration goes out to those who are and are working so hard and to Rayners owners who continue to remain positive that he will return to them. Fingers crossed!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you so much, at least I now know I have not lost my marbles. I just know they will be found. I wonder if Rahner still has his red collar on. When seen crossing the walkway it was to the left as my son in law looked up. He said it was near Pilkingtons tile factory and that there was grassland near. It would be typical of Rahner to go with another dog as he was brought up with two others and to bark as he often did in play. Smokey Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Right I've been out searching with my friend, however, we did get a bit lost and didn't end up at the bridge we should have gone to originally, however this was the correct bridge. I've been over into Phillips Park Hall and put a couple of posters up on the notice boards round there, I have also put one on the blue bridge that goes over the motorway. I have put a couple on lamp-posts just outstide the entrance. I then went into Sedgeley Park RUFC and found an extremely helpful man sat at the bar. I asked if I could give him a poster to put up for a missing dog ............. lo and behold he asked if it was 2 alsatians as he and some of his friends were discussing it the previous night! Apparently both of the dogs were sat on the bridge from 4.30am yesterday, it was noted that they were also there at 6.30am and 4pm. The man in the rugby club rang a friend who lives in the cottages at Phillips Park Hall and The Parkfield pub just a little further up the road. This man has definitely seen both of these dogs - he's out with his dogs early am. He took a note of contact details and I think he may call you tomorrow. He is going to inform his neighbours and as he lives there I would imagine he knows the majority of the dog walkers so hopefully this would lead to more information being passed on! I have been told if these guys find the dogs - I'm buying the first round ha ha. I have left a voicemail message for the owner (sorry I don't know your name) but these fella's were more than helpful and you now have more than one confirmed sighting. I really hopes this helps x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

JUst returned from my second visit today to the area where Rahner was sighted. I have been over the 3 walk way bridges that cross the M60 between junctions 16 and 17. I regret to say that I have found no trace. I will return again on Wednesday morning. With regard to Smokey's question as to where Rahner would be taken if he were picked up in that area, then he would be taken to Manchester Dogs Home or if out of hours to PetMedics. If he is picked up, I will be the 1st to know and will advise etc. Regards, Paul. PS. Last but not least, I need to speak to Rahners Mum (Smokey). I have tried to contact you many times today. Might be worth a walk around Clifton marina? Lots of dog walkers, people fishing on their, picnics tables etc also a farm - I'll get up there tomorrow and poster like mad with Bri. Also, I know a few HGV drivers that use the M60 frequently so I'll give them all posters to keep in the cabs - i'm sooo pleased he's been sighted! Rahner's Mum here. I can't believe the news I have got goose bumps, butterflies, you name It I've got it. He was seen by my son in law this morning. He was on his way from Whitefield to Kearsley on the M60. As he approached junction 16, he looked up and saw Rahner with a big GSD, crossing the walkway over the motor way. Rahner was keeping up the rear and was barking, he appeared to be wild, but I still love him. I spoke to my son this evening who did not believe me at first, that Rahner had been spotted, but when told it was a family member who spotted him, he was over the moon. The fact that he is alive and barking is absolutely brilliant. As a point of interest Kearsley is about 5 or 10 mins away from Rahner's home. Can I take this opportunity to thank you all for all your messages and a big thank uou to Margaret, who has been invaluable. Please God we can find the little monkey before he realises he is a male. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just rang Manchester Evening News back but the person I need to speak to is on his lunch at the moment. I have left my contact details and will hopefully get the rates of ad's this afternoon. I'll post again with details as and when I receive them. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went to MDH yesterday and not even a possible lookalike unfortunately. His poster is still up in there reception and they allowed me to look in the stray "7day" kennel and I also had a look in the rehoming kennels. I've text my Dad asking him to take me to see my brother in Leigh so I'll check Leigh Animal Sanctuary while I'm there. Is there any luck with putting the food out? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all so much, especially Margaret. You have given me the courage to go on. I know he is frightened and missing the company of his master. I wish he had the maturity to seek human help. For those helpers who know the area, the accident happened where the junction of the M602 joins the M60 going towards Bolton, the junction after this I think is Junction11, which would be right for Worsley. As I am not sure of the area, the nearest land to the accident was the Grange farm. Police went down to junction20 after the accident but he was no where to be seen. Unfortunately the accident could not have been at a worse place as the land running along the side of the motorway is open farmland. If I can help in any way or if anyone can point me in any direction I will search for ever for him. An innocent angel (who was the victim of an idiot,) who does not deserve what happened to him. Hi Grannybags and welcome. We aren't putting the exact area here on site as it is private land and this is a site which anyone can read. Please would you text or PM owner Smokey (Annette) and talk to her so that she can advise and co-ordinate you with another helper to work out a plan of action. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jaspbenswood, thanks very much, will PM you my email and phone number. Don't worry about doing anything immediately, you need to talk to Annette and get this right. IMPORTANT note to all helpers - we don't want a whole load of people, we need one or two regulars whose scent he can get used to, so please don't think in terms of rounding up a search party as all that will happen is he will be scared off into another area which would be less safe. We want to keep him where he is. He hides even from known people so would not come to a stranger and would be afraid of a group of people.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Is there anyone in the area near J10 between Eccles and Bolton who could make a commitment to put out food regularly in a particular area. The person/people would need to be patient and dedicated and simply leave the food, NOT try to catch him. Annette was there today with a Doglost helper, and pawprints have been found which match those of Rahner's litter sister. We think he is holed up in the undergrowth. This is a real "softly, softly" job.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi All, still checking back on here. So sorry Rahner has not been found yet. Have just found out from Milly's page that there is a travellers site at Flixton, at the top of Mile Rd, (Carrington Lane) next to a place that sells vans? I wondered if anyone had gone down that route, as it would explain no sightings. There may be other sites too. Sorry don't know the area. I have been trying to get hold of a travellers liaison officer for the area. Have been given a telephone number to ring within the police for more information on that score. 0161 872 5050. The trail may appear to have gone cold, but take heart from the fact that a dog in a rural area who can catch a rabbit and has a bit of sense can survive indefinitely. There are dogs on here who have faded into the landscape for weeeks or even months and then suddenly there are sightings.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I don't think the Bolton Evening News is the best paper to have put a story in because as far as I know the readership area does'nt cover that of Eccles/Worsley-I could be wrong. The Manchester Evening News covers these areas and has a far greater readership. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The A57 passes along side all the open land between Eccles and the Manchester Ship canal. There are several places around here. Barton Aerodrome, Eccles Cemetary on the Northbound side of Mway. Winton park playing fields is on the southbound side, and the area is a lot more built up this side. The A57 leads all the way from Salford to past warrington-passing alot of open land. The A57 is south of The Grange farm but north of the Ship canal..Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

press release has been done and sent to the owner for final approval before going to media. Rahner remains on the run, no sightings at this time but search cnntinues for him daily. Challenge for volunteers is that the land either side of the motorway is open fields and farmland and Rahner could be anywhere, he could have covered a huge distance or could be lying low and we really need that one sighting of him so we can concentrate our efforts. at the moment it is the proverbial needle for us. Please, if you are in the area, keep postering and spreading the word. Owner is devastated but very grateful for support she is receiving.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well it's not easy, but have made a start. By chance came across this site (www.urmston.net/clubsandgroups.asp). There maybe similar sites for the other areas we need to target. It has taken me ages to get this far, but from this page I have Emailed posters to the following groups (AND ASKED FOR ANY POSSIBLE HELPWITH POSTERING) -Ist Flixton Scout Group,-3rd Davyhulme Scout group,-FlixtonDog training Club,- Manchester Equestrian Centre, -Trafford Millennium Volunteers,-and the Trafford Walkers, -I figgered that by targeting groups rather than one person, we may get some help. However one Email has been returned to me, and I think it's still my problem with my server, so can someone please put out an appeal for help, and forward the poster to 1st Flixton Scout Group (normanl@btinternet.com) please. Have got to get off now for a while. Once you get a head start, like the clubs and groups idea its easy. xx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for your comment on postering, Sue, and the need for people to say which bits they have done. It saves a lot of time and effort if people do that. We need a postering blitz of a 5 mile radius around the accident area, because I would bet a sackful of dog biscuits to a manky old bone that he hasn't gone far. However scared he may have been at the time, he is a GSDx so will start to do some thinking. He will also be resourceful, so may have done reasonably well on rabbits etc. He will be looking for his owner, so is unlikely to have hared off miles away from the place he last saw him. I think we need to concentrate on intensive local postering as well as calls and emails further afield.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Re the sighted dog L30 Junction 10 is not Switch Island. Junction 10 is where Rahner was involved with the RTA, so could possibly have been him that was sighted. DL only got the report of this sighted dog by what was on the radio. Jan xxx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have been watching Rahners page and looking to help in any way. The one thing that I have noticed on here is the lack of helpers putting information on here of where they are postering, aside from the owner. There have been several hundred emails sent out, so I am sure there are at least half of them able to get online and tell us where you have been. Please don't be shy it is vital information in the tracking. We noticed with Merlin (KT22) that we got calls all over the county because we posted anywhere it was possible he could have reached. It doesn't matter if they are false alarms, no matter how disappointing, because the one call that matters will come and did in his case. From looking at the map I can see waterworks, further along there is housing (possibly densly placed and ideal for word of mouth). Merlin did not appear to go far from the accident area and was found within a few hundred yards. He may well have moved around, but came back. He was found in a small alley behind gardens and a gap in the hedge of someones garden. They didn't even know he was there. It was the fortune of Merlin that someone had read the missing poster at the local school and remembered. She was washing up at her sink when she saw him across the road and down the alley. Posters are what matter as well as all the local organisations. Please tell us where you have put them. Thanks everyone, Sue xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There is a golf club at Worsley, might be an idea to give them poster, I was wondering ig he may have ran along the ship canal to avoid traffic, it runs to Warrington, any helpers that could look? Is anyone free to poster anywhere? As he may have ran towards Bolton, North East of Bolton is Rivington Pike and Rivington Barn, always busy with walkers and bikers at weekends but will be packed at Easter weekend as tradition to go there, bikers from all over the place will be there, can anyone hand out posters? The police went down the motorway up to junction 20. There was no sighting. Near to where the accident happened, just over a fence, Rahner could have jumped is open farm land and forest land. The farm is on the map as the Grange farm, which is near junction 10 on the way from Eccles to Bolton. Smokey has visited the farm and looked around, the farmer was fantastic and provided them with lists of contact numbers. If Rahner managed to cross the motorway bridge he could be in Trafford. (A dog was seen crossing the bridge rush hour the following morning again Smokey contacted security at the Trafford Centre and local authority) There was no description of the dog. If he got to the canal he could be in Boothstown /Walkden/Worsely/ Wardly/Leigh in fact anywhere. If he crossed on to the other motorway he could have headed to Liverpool. Smokey there is one avenue I would take if my dog was missing. I deliver the Merseymart which is a free local paper in Liverpool, Merseyside. Each week there are lots of leaflets to be delivered with it. It may worth getting some small A5 leaflets printed and paying to get them delivered with whatever free local paper is delivered in the areas you want to target. Or approach a company that just do leaflet deliveries. If you could not go the direct route to paper, then try and find out who actually delivers any such paper etc and give them say ?5.00. Hope this helps and everyone is rooting for Rahner to come home. Jan xx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I hope you can take heart from Merlins story (re-united Lurcher K22) It would seem if you smother a wide area in posters you will get sightings, even when it turns out not to be him it shows people are looking, taking note, it spreads the word. Tell absolutely everyone you meet and ask them to tell everyone they know, if you can get coverage in the local papers that's great. It would seem unlikely (Iwould have thought) that Merlin was in the area, near where the accident happened and where he was found, for the whole two weeks he was missing. We will never know for sure if any of the more local sightings were him (ie the 'Island' ?) It seems likely that he did leave the area, no doubt traumatised after the accident, but then returned to near the last place he had seen his 'mum' . Sounds very good that the Farmer is prepared to look out for him 'cos Rahner may just do the same. Make sure everywhere is postered and as many people as possible informed, everyone here hoping for the same happy outcome, just wish we were nearer to help... Have contacted a friend who runs a GSD rescue in Surrey, to pass on details to anyone she knows in your area.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have visited the farm and looked around, the farmer was fantastic and provided me with lists of contact numbers. He has my details and has said he will take the dog in, feed it and contact me. If Rahner managed to cross the motorway bridge he could be in Trafford. (A dog was seen crossing the bridge rush hour the following morning again I contacted security at the Trafford Centre and local authority) There was no description of the dog.Again if he got to the canal he could be in Boothstown /Walkden/Worsely/ Wardly/Leigh in fact anywhere. If he crossed on to the other motorway he could have headed to Liverpool. I have contacted Liverpool dogs home, most unhelpful, but not there. I have visited Leigh Dog's home today with no joy. The worry is that we do not know if he was injured. He is a timid loving dog and very obedient. He has never left my son's side and has been invaluable to him since he was mugged last December.I have posted adds in the Manchester Evening News and The Salford Weekly which circulates within the areas I have mentioned. There has been no response even though a reward has been offered. The add about the found GSD is not correct, the person who placed the add never found a dog , she saw one in Asda's car park..My son is unable to visit the site as his car was written off in the accident. I feel useless as I am unable to give him the one thing he wants most and that is his treasured and much loved Rahner. He doesn't care about himself or his car. His first thought after the crash was Rahner. He had to be prevented from going after him.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm thinking about various dogs on this site who have escaped and been recovered after RTAs, and mostly they haven't gone all that far. You need obviously to talk to the highways maintenance people, but unless we find out otherwise, we should assume that he got off the motorway and look at the surrounding areas.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks all for this one. Rahner has a sad story, he was being driven home when his dad's car was hit with such force the vehicle span, somersaulted and landed on its roof. the owner was trapped and Rahner, who is scared of cars and being in them, ran out through the shattered windscreen and off down the road. The poor owner. Because of this, Rahner could be anywhere - bolton, liverpool etc etc. Media going out tomorrow but, please all sightings of a dog matching this description would be welcome - no matter where in that corner of the world you live. come home soon rahnerx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As soon as picture is put on site and posters are emailed to helpers they need to be put up in the area a.s.a.p. lamposts, entrances to parks, vets, dog training clubs, petshops, schools, deliver to houses etc. Ask postie, milkmen and binmen to lookout. Handout smaller posters to people, especially dog walkers. Put A4 poster in car windows. rescue centres need checking regularly and preferably visited in person, by owner or someone who knows Rahner.
