Just posted the comment below on Bleek's FaceBook page... The thanks apply equally to everyone on here too.

So, the post I hoped I'd never have to write. Even now a small part of me stubbornly hopes that a miracle will return my boy to me one day, but weight of circumstantial evidence has forced me to accept that Bleeker may have died either on, or shortly after the day he went missing. It's taken a couple of weeks to establish what facts there are, and it's friend of a friend stuff, but I heard the following from someone i work with, who I trust absolutely.

Someone driving the the lanes that Bleeker could have taken, on the right day, in the right weather conditions, followed a car that hit a black dog. They both stopped and though the driver in the lead car was deeply shocked, they took the time to look around but found no sign of of anything. This was just about a year ago to the day. Then, two or three weeks ago, someone else emerged who, walking his dog in the same area, came across some remains in a ditchSo, the post I hoped I'd never have to write. To cut a long story short, there isn't enough to scan, or even take to a vet to identify species, but for various reasons we believe it was a dog. So ...Bleeker? I don't know, but it seems that my lovely, bright, friendly, enthusiastic lad may have let his spanielly instincts take him that unlucky bit too far the last time I saw him disappearing cross country after a pheasant...

Just one more thing - thank you, all of you, who've searcher, pestered, postered, shared and generally kept my morale going through what had not been the best year of my dog-sharing life. I'll keep this page live for a while, but I may just spend less time on it, if you don't mind.... I heard last week that this time last year, in the area he went missing, on the right day of the week, someone saw a black dog hit by a car, before running off. The driver was horribly shocked and though both men looked around they couldn't find anything. It also emerges that since then someone else, walking their dog, came across some bones and dark fur in a ditch. Neither person connected the many posters in the area of Bleeker with what they had seen and a friend is trying to get more definite information. Of course it's circumstantial, but I've had a sick feeling ever since that it might be my boy. What I'm wondering is, if we manage to track down the remains, is there anyone in the area that can scan them in situ for me? Moving them might destroy any last faint hope of finding a chip....

Thank you everyone, but sadly not Bleeker. This dog is slightly shorter and broader .. and Bleek's front legs are unnaturally straight for a spaniel - maybe some kind of setter in him? I was alerted via a Yorkshire spaniel rescue woman - and quite a few people on FaceBook - and rang the kennel that night. The good news is that they said he'd already been reunited.Last edited: 2015-02-21 12:28:41 by NellMcMH

Just added Bleeker's poster to the Murphy Army Community page on Facebook. Hoping the recent publicity Murphy and his brilliant owner have had, for stolen dogs and Murphy in particular, both in the media and in Parliament yesterday, will begin to make a difference to the current plague of dog theft.
NellMcMH
Updated his photo yesterday, in the hope it will aid recognition and maybe jog someone's memory...
NellMcMH
Hi Sue, I'm computerless at the moment - hopefully it'll be back from the doc today - of course it's the one with all the useful things on it! ...and thanks v much for yours. It helps so much to know that people are still thinking of him.
Sue
Hi just to say still thinking of you despite the time since we last spoke - have you a link to facebook post and you tube and I will put details up again to refresh everyone's memory. Herss hoping that someone took him in and that he will be recognised. Sue. Rodgrove.
NellMcMH
He most certainly isn't! Has the instinct for the chase, but no idea what to do about it and at four years old, it's a little late to instill the necessary discipline...

Sorry there was no luck last night, would of been pitch black dark up there, I'm sure Joanne will keep an extra eye out from now and will let you know straight away she's a lovely lady. I'm happy to do a search of area on Saturday as no car till late Friday. I will do boost posts to yeovil groups on fb so more people in the area are aware to keep look out.
NellMcMH
Bobble - does your mob end 542? I've got a few unsaved and nothing in your name, though I know we spoke in the early days?!
NellMcMH
Found the person who'd sighted the dog and she thought it could be Bleeker, though hadn't had view of his white chest, so couldn't be at all sure. Two of us went and searched the woodland, but in the dark it was almost impossible, though my son passed two badgers at 3 metres distance. Probably not so relaxed if there'd been a dog around. Saw eyes in the torch beam on the other side of the drive, but instinct told us it was more likely a fox from it's behaviour and what body language we could see. Location could be appropriate if he was picked up/stolen and then either discarded again or escaped, otherwise it's not an area he's been to before. Worth a try though. May go back in the morning, but will sleep on it.
Niki - Area Volunteer, Devon & Somerset
This is probably at bit too much information but it describes it well
Barwick Park is situated about 1.5 kilometres south-east of Yeovil, to the east of the A37 road. The roughly 60 hectare site includes the Obelisk about 1.3 kilometres south of the House as an outlier, and is bounded to the north by a minor road, Two Tower Lane, to the east by a track known as Long Lane, and to the south and west by agricultural land and Yeovil football ground. The site slopes from north to south, with a stream, dammed to form a small lake, running from north-west to south-south-east through a shallow valley immediately south of the House. To the south of Barwick village, about 750 metres south of the House, the ground rises to a ridge which partly encloses southerly views from the park. There are extensive views from the high ground in the park to the north of the House, while the mid-18th-century Round House or Summer House (listed grade II) associated with Newton Surmaville (see description of this site elsewhere in the Register) situated on high ground about 500 metres north of Barwick Park acts as an eyecatcher from the Obelisk and high ground to the south of Barwick Park.

Do you know two towers lane on the right down there about 100 yards are big metal gates saying barwick park it's private property though and the person who spotted the dog owns the land and has given Nell permission to enter.

Hi Nell can you pm me regarding possible sighting, it's is a distance away but The lady is out walking her dogs now and she said she seen a small black lab type dog I sent her a pic of Bleeker and she said it could possibly be. Location is on my lost and found dogs Somerset page. I'm talking to the lady now.

Location of possible sighting two towers lane and last seen running through fields towards barwick direction. She's still keeping a look out and calling out for Bleeker just in case.
She said this dog seen the car and bolted and that the dog looked scared and she's searching in the direction it went but nothing so far. Will keep you posted. She has just re messaged after I sent another photo and she is sure it's Bleeker. Last edited: 2014-12-10 16:23:13 by Niki - Area Volunteer, Devon & Somerset

Definitely a good idea to network further afield, however the white van story keeps doing the rounds and is usually proven to be a sad spoof on Facebook.

I am still diverting my journey and looking out for him in the areas he could be, we need a sighting to set up a search as the possibles are so wide spread.
NellMcMH
Past the three week mark now and still no sign. His poster is now in a few places in Wincanton, including the football club - a busy place. Also local PCSOs are on the case. Because of another (so far false) lead I spoke Dog Wardens in Purbeck and East Dorset DCs - both said they definitely scan for microchips. One said that man-and-van theft is always rife at this time of year, possibly for sale in markets up country and I'm increasingly thinking my boy could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, because none of the extremely observant people who know, have seen anything at all. Happy Landings have confirmed sighting of long wheelbase transit, with no number plate and there are others. Looking to put feelers out in less conventional ways now... And thank you for the Countrymans WeeklyLast edited: 2014-12-05 10:50:14 by NellMcMH

Nominated for Countryman's Weekly, it can take a few weeks, hope it bring some news.

Wyke Farms are great, so helpful and supportive - please buy Wyke Farm Cheese.

Bumping due to possible second sighting near Bruton.
NellMcMH
Thank you! Had another possible lead in Bruton this morning and by the time I tracked down the source (vague, sadly, though worth checking all the same - it's all getting the word out there) I'd covered quite a lot of the farms in the Redlynch/Stoney Stoke/Hardway area, ending up back in Bruton and then on to Wyke. Posters now up in both Kimber and Wyke Farm shops (their tanker drivers found the last missing dog), the boarding kennels in Bruton and my local Post Office, Market House noticeboard, petrol station and hardware store and so it goes on....
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Nell, it is not deliberate, so by all means add it. I took a good look around the area as well as I could between Wincanton & Bruton towards Castle Carey on Friday, then did the Castle area to Wyke Champflower and back around up towards showground on Saturday morning, then back to Bruton and down to Wincanton in the afternoon. Both Saturday Sunday walked miles in the Lamyatt area with my dogs too. Obviously you can guess what my main concern is if he is trying to get home from the Bruton area. this morning I did a quick loop in the car around Cucklington on my way too work.
NellMcMH
Updated his poster again, to cut out superfluous info as he seems to have moved on from, or been picked up from, the Cucklington area. Now concentrating round Bruton because of one or two - incredibly and apologetically vague - possible sightings.

One question - though he IS chipped, it doesn't say so on his poster. Is this deliberate on the part of DogLost, or should I put that in the narrative below the picture (not the number, though, obviously)? It's one of the first questions I'm asked when I'm taking flyers round...

Thanks Claire, Local postie has been brilliant and has been helping owner since day 1.
ClaireC
You could ask local delivery drivers, especially Post Office and also main Sorting Office is there is one nearby as they would normally put a poster up especially in a Sorting office for posties to see. Local Milkmen if they still exist in your area, local farmers at least to make them aware. Local Florist(s) and likewise Estate Agents in the area especially as they go out and about. Reference the Post Office you could put a couple of flyers in post boxes for posties to take with them and keep in their vehicle just in case. Do you have a local Radio station maybe they would put something out on the "airwaves". Hope these suggestions help to get your lovely Bleeker back home. x
NellMcMH
As of today he's now also on www.lostdogsuk.com, who have passed the word round Dog Wardens and LurcherSearch and he's being added to Champdogs.co.uk noticeboard. I've also asked Morrisons and Lidl in Wincanton to put his DL poster up. They don't seem to have public noticeboards as such, but they've promised to do something...
NellMcMH
Thanks, Sue ...and for our chat. If it was him he's doing quite large loops ...3+ miles cross country. Possibly down yr way on Tuesday evening, then possibly scratching at someone else's door, out on Tinker's Lane, the other side of Cucklington the next night. At the moment, if any of these instances are him, it seems he's either just ahead, or just behind me. Assuming he'd like to come home (and he's a dog that loves being outside, but also loves cuddles and being warm and comfortable) I'm beginning to wonder whether I should restrict my searches to a smaller area in case I'm distracting him from the one place he knows over there (Shanks) ...unless of course he's building himself up to making the trek home to Castle Cary...

Bumped page as Bleeker is in todays Blackmore Vale Magazine and also due to another possible sighting.

Sue, I have alerted your message to owner, hoping it was him.

Dog found in Bristol was not Bleeker.
Sue
Hi we are just below Cucklington at Rodgrove - I was just wondering I was walking around the sheep early evening and there was a fox (but may have been a dog) in the hedge I only picked up the eyes with the torch - went to check not a sheep and the animal stayed there until I got really close. Most unusual for a fox. Also our spaniel has persistently barked every time out in garden for no apparent reason. May be nothing - but we are no distance from Cucklington. Will ask hubbie to have a good look in the morning - call me on 01963 371278/ 07929269703 SueLast edited: 2014-11-21 00:02:36 by Sue

Bumped due to this possible sighting and press coverage. Very hopeful, finally gives us a starting point. Please refer back to the help sheet I sent you Nell as it has plotting advise on it.
NellMcMH
Blackmore Vale mag has posted him on their Facebook page! My latest: working at Shanks today, 'someone' has eaten a pheasant on the lawn (probably a shot bird from Saturday's shoot) and left a dog-sized poo since it rained, ie sometime yesterday or overnight last night. Yes, it could be a fox, but a friend is setting up a motion-sensitive camera to see what's about. Foxes are creatures of habit so, either way, something should show up. Btw, owner of the (probable) pale dog on the CCTV has nothing to report, thought DID ring to tell me. I'd so much rather know, than just not know... Also rang 3 dog rescue centres and they'll keep an eye, as will the 3 local hunts who've been informed.

NellMcMH
Back to see if he'd appeared on CCTV again. He hadn't but owner of camera had remembered another pale-coloured dog, known to wander around and told me where to find the owner. Also visited transport business on the way to Wincanton and they will share around among drivers. Walked the route from camera to Shanks' back gate and down to the house with my other dog - who carefully read lots of pee-mail, but only bothered to add her mark to a few (covers Bleeker's pee if she sees him do it)...though she left plenty of other evidence of our passing en route, so a trail for him to follow if he's around. There'll also be a mention of his plight in this week's Blackmore Vale.

Been out again last 2 mornings as day breaks. Seen plenty of deer and other wildlife, no sign of Bleeker though. There is such a large area to cover at the moment and we need a positive sighting.
DogLostOwl
The fact that you have not seen him does not mean he is not around. Dogs act quite differently from their normal selves when they are out on their own. They keep a low profile and get very cautious. He will probably be on the move foraging around dawn and dusk, and people will not easily spot him then especially as he is black.
NellMcMH
...oh, and may have identified the owner of the mystery 'other' dog, but no answer at their house, so put a flyer through their door with a note on the back.
NellMcMH
In the area again today, both in the village and going wider too: yet more farmers, horse people and dog walkers, left another piece of dog bed at Shanks.

One thing - friends have suggested offering a reward, but I'm torn about that. Are there any stats that either confirm that's a good idea or not...and how on earth do you value it, or him?! It seems to me that everyone I've talked to has been interested, sympathetic and a helpful as they could be. Would money really make a difference?
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
I really hoped he would show himself at Shanks on Saturday. Does anyone know where that lady comes from, she may be able to help?

I'll leave early in the morning and have a good look Cucklington towards Gillingham again. He's there somewhere Nell, we just need a new sighting to help us locate him.
NellMcMH
Went to see a Cucklington resident who'd spotted a black dog on his CCTV on Thursday afternoon (13th Nov). Not a clear image, but it was probably him. The thing is he seemed to be with another, similar sized pale coloured dog - which is good if the latter belongs to a lady who's been seen riding with a 'hound-like' dog at foot, because he may have found shelter with her. On the other hand, being part of a gang might make him less inclined to find his way back to where he went missing down at the bottom of the village. Drove around some more and handed out more flyers - and left one to be put on the noticeboard at Cucklington village hall. Lots of residents seem to know about him now - the postman has been brilliant help - but it makes me wonder why no-one has seen him... Oh, Bleek, where ARE you?

I have shared with DogLost FB page & Twitter. Really hope Bleeker is safely back home soon. X

Been out again this morning, Came back via the Wincanton to Castle Cary road and again no sign of him or disturbed wildlife. There is a working dog meeting in the area today, everyone will know to look out for him, so hopefully he will show himself.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Spoken to owner this morning and now forwarded general help sheet. I have also alerted people I know in the Sandley, Cucklington, Stoke Tristar area.

I drove around the general Cucklington, Buckhorn Weston area stopping wherever I could to have a good look around. No sign of any disturbed livestock or wildlife anywhere. Then into Stoke Tristar and into Wincanton via the back roads. I dropped a poster off to Boyes Transport which they are going to put in the office where all the drivers can see, they can see so much more than us from thos big trucks. I have contacted everyone I know with working dogs and a poster will go up onto local noticeboard.

Good visability this afternoon but just no signs anywhere. I showed a poster to everyone I saw and spoke to any dog walkers I saw in Gillingham s well.

Bourton cubs will know to keep a look out too.

Owner has been out postering well again today.

Thanks for your help Spindle.Last edited: 2014-11-14 16:53:23 by Bobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
