Shared. Any news philippa Howells
ClaireC
Hi Philippa any news?
Philippa Howells
Not our old man, I'm afraid - too hairy. But thanks. Still no news.
Bo
Worth a look at this one I just cross posted - it's micro chipped but he may have been rehomed

I am so sorry Philippa that to date there has been no sightings or even a hint of where to look to further help you find Hector.
Philippa Howells
No, I'm afraid not.
cindy
Any more news on Hector?
Philippa Howells
No - no news at all, I'm afraid.
ClaireC
Hi Phillippa hope your young one is getting on OK. Have you heard anything at all please?
ClaireC
Thanks Diana I'm not on facebook either.
DIANA HUMPHREYS
I have put Hectors information on my Facebook page for you.
Philippa Howells
A find in Oprpington (Kent) seems unlikely when he was lost in Buckinghamshire! - and I assuming this lady lives in Orpington? Also he disappeared on 8th Nov, not Bonfire Night. I'm not on Facebook; if anyone who is could check this out for me just in case I've misunderstood, that would be great. Also, we did have a call from someone in The Lee saying she'd seen a little JRT running down her road, but with a black lab, so that too seems unlikely; but if anyone is up that way I'd be grateful if they could keep a special look-out. (My husband went and postered up there on Saturday; they are all very aware.)

Post deleted as unlikely this was the missing dog. Last edited: 2013-11-26 14:28:29 by Bo

Hi Phillipa, have you checked with the Highways/?Environmental Health Dept of your local Council? Sorry to say that if Hector has been involved in an RTA these are the people who would pick up an animal. Always worth checking for ease of mind x
Philippa Howells
Thanks - no, no neighbours with pools or ponds, and yes, we have checked with Green Meadows (also Maccabee Kennels, which are the holding kennels for Chiltern DC)
janet.harriman
A real hazard this time of year is covered outdoor swimming pools. Any neighbours with one?
Barney 'n' Ozzie's mum
Have you tried Green Meadows Kennels in the Chalfonts? Police normally use them for any strays picked up x
DogLostBattersea Dogs HomeBattersea
We have made a report at BDCH, ref 00114085 for Hector but no matches yet.
ClaireC
I will try and get Hector's page bumped to the front page as he is in paper. Hope this brings in some much awaited news. Good luck xx
Philippa Howells
Real disappointment this morning - we had a report of a stray terrier at Beamond End that was taken to Wheelhouse vets, but it turned out to be a female. So definitely not our Hector. Please keep looking. We have an ad in the Bucks Advertiser and Examiner tomorrow, in case anyone has taken him in.
ClaireC
Sorry not seen a thing. Unavailable tomorrow but around on Wed but the weather is supposed to be horrendous and I would guess that Hector would stay undercover. If you get a sighting please don't hesitate to contact me on Wed xx
Jo
We will keep searching Prestwood, Lt Kingshill, Hyde Heath and Chesham.
area. Happy to have some posters for Pelagos and my car.
ClaireC
I am up at Prestwood again this morning and my intention to have another look/slow drive around. Sorry to hear about your little child - one of mine broke 2 wrists in one go at school once when she was younger. I seem to recall that I spent most weekends at the hosp! xx
Kay9
Leafleted in GM this morning, everyone aware. Spoke to a lovely couple from Winchmore Hill who will cover there. If Hector turned right and kept going, he could be in Amersham Old Town or Winchmore Hill without having to climb hills. If he doubled back then the Kingshills, Prestwood etc are definite possibilities. Will print out more posters and get out again to put them up. Sorry about the toddler's wrist, you're due some good luck. I've left food in Abbey Field and Buryfield in the evenings so if he does go there, hopefully, he'll stick around for more! Once he's back in GM I'm sure you'll get to hear about it.
Philippa Howells
that's so kind. Nothing further the last 2 days, I'm afraid, though we've had confirmation of last Sunday's Buryfield sighting via the milkman. I was out in Missenden yesterday (that was before the toddler fell downstairs and broke his wrist - not joking - it's been a bit of a week), and everyone I spoke to already knew to be on the lookout, which is encouraging. I wonder about trying over towards Little Missenden/the Kingshills, in case he veered off to the right when he encountered the main road? I'm also planning to put an ad in next week's local paper, in case someone's taken him in.
Helen Biggerstaff
Hi! Would like to help this weekend. Will be on a bike, so can cover more miles. Where though?
Kay9
I'll be out leafleting again today. Maybe Hector turned back from his original circuit because he didn't want to do that steep uphill climb again. Perhaps he'll be keeping to the valley floor, he could even be out Amersham Old Town Way or Wendover. Good luck everyone.
Kay9
Shame the scent took us to that main road so further tracking wasn't possible. However, it did tell us that he did the expected anti-clockwise triangle, but for some reason, when he started the second circuit, he turned right to the church and took a different route. I walked Abbey Field with sausages on a plate warmer this morning, then up the steps and down Church Street, then back along the road. Spoke to everyone I saw, so loads of people keeping a look out in Missenden. If his new circuit brings him back to Missenden we should catch up with him, we'll need to poster further afield as he's left the first route we defined, and we need another sighting to work out his possible new route. I'll go out this afternoon in the car - with smelly food and windows open! I'll drive a very slow circuit, so that if he's near and picks up the scent it might tempt him. Looking at the map, I may try Little Kingshill. We'll get him!Last edited: 2013-11-14 12:37:51 by Kay9
Philippa Howells
Thank you again, Kay; we are so touched by what everyone is doing for us. I had calls all day yesterday from people who are keeping a look out. Still no sign - and we tried bbq'ing some sausages both at home and on the Buryfield last night. So if he's still about, he obviously is, or then was, further away. A friend out searching yesterday afternoon said that the chips in the Frith Hill underpass had been eaten (they were still around when I went out at crack of dawn yesterday) - so that might have been him, but who knows?
Kay9
Off to GM now - 7.30 am - with sausages on plate warmer. I think I'll try Abbey Field. From sighting and Tiga's trail, I think the pub must have been Sunday night/Monday morning, so we're a few days behind him, but let's hope he's circling back by now. I'm only able to do an hour or so this morning, but hope to do more leafleting this afternoon. Good luck everyone.
ClaireC
Thanks Philippa. Lets hope that with all the postering that something positive gets phoned into you. As I said I can help out on Fri if he hasnt returned home by then. I have advised Admin of the deceased cat. xxLast edited: 2013-11-13 18:12:18 by ClaireC

Hi Philippa, I work in Great Missenden High Street so I will tell all I see and know someone who lives in Little Missenden so will tell him to look out too as he does a lot of cycling and has a dog similar to Hector!
Philippa Howells
Thanks Claire; yes we and/or Kay have postered most of those places - and we have certainly checked the garden very thoroughly! I caught the milkman, library van, garbage men and Riverford delivery man this morning. We have just been down to Little Missenden and left posters in the shop and pub and on the bus shelter, just in case; we also left them at Bubbles Car Wash and the Deep Mill Diner. No little canine corpses on the A413 that we could see, happily - but we did see a (very) dead black cat on the verge by the Deep Mill Diner; I don't know whether that's something to be reported on the Found section? The good news is that someone has seen Hector, even though it was a few days ago - on the Buryfield, on Sunday morning, during a football match. They told the newsagent - shame neither he nor they called us.
ClaireC
Hi Philippa lovely to speak to you this morning. As I suggested lots of places to put posters up (the more up the more people will be aware). Outside the garage(s) on the telegraph poles, bus stops/shelters. Also entrance to the woods - lots of people will go out walking their dogs. There is also a small public footpath coming back up from Gt Miss on left hand side heading up towards Prestwood again a good place to put a poster up as I'm sure people will go up that one with their dog(s). Think of postering where lots of people will go to. Also Gt Missenden school might allow a poster up outside - you would be surprised how many children will keep a lookout as well. Don't forget suggestion of putting a poster or two in the local post boxes, postman might take back and leave in their sorting office and others will see. Likewise the car park at Gt Missenden, bottle banks and the local Post Office. If you have done of these places I apologise for preaching to the converted! Local milkmen/or trades people/Bubble Car Wash (especially if Tiga has tracked that way) are other outlets. If you need me to search anywhere I may be able to. Unfortunately not available Thurs or weekend but around on Fri if Hector has now been found or returned home. Don't forget to keep checking with your dog warden(s) as well. I know this may seem a daft question, and not knowing how large your garden is, but I am assuming that it has been thoroughly checked in any shrubbery that you may possibly have! Some dogs do just like to curl up in them! Good luck Last edited: 2013-11-13 13:48:44 by ClaireC
Philippa Howells
Thanks Claire and yes, please do keep looking the other way. We had a call from a man this morning who had seen a JRT on the loose in Greenlands Lane, Prestwood on Sat. Didn't really sound like Hector from the description, and also doesn't tie in with Tiga's tracking, but you never know - so definitely worth looking Prestwood way still.
ClaireC
Phew a long way! Good luck if you are out that way again today and I hope to cover the other direction again x
Philippa Howells
Dear all, Kay, Jenny and Tiga have spent the whole day tracking Hector (I did the last stint with Jenny and Tiga after dark). We haven't found him yet but it seems that there's a good chance that he's still out there. Tiga picked up Hector's scent going along Trafford Road, up the High Street, up Church Street and under the bypass, up Frith Hill into South Heath, on to Ballinger, then back on a footpath across fields to Potter Row and down to the A413, across the main roundabout there (aargh), back onto the Link Road and to the library, back onto the High Street, Church Street and under the bypass again, across Frith Hill, into the churchyard, down the steps to Abbey Park, past the lake and over the bridge, across the London Road, left down to the Nag's Head, an exhaustive exploration of the Nag's Head garden/car park, on down the London Road, round the Chiltern Hospital car park and then up to the junction between the London Road and the A413. There we stopped: it wasn't safe for us to go on walking up the A413 in the dark, and in any case Tiga can't track a scent when there are masses of cars whizzing by. The proximity to the main road is, obviously, not such good news, but Jenny feels it's very likely that he will either have turned back (perhaps back into Abbey Park) or tried to find a way off to the right (perhaps onto the golf course). So we are very far from giving up hope. Eddie (my husband) has gone out now with bacon on a string, and I will go out at dawn tomorrow. Kay - thank you so much for all your help today; perhaps give me a call tomorrow (not sure if I will need to go into work tomorrow but Eddie is going to be here). Claire: thank you too; yes I have asked at the station, and they have posters both in the station waiting room and in the café.
ClaireC
Ok, sadly I can't get to South Heath on Wed but I can still have a look around and about Prestwood (as thats where I shall be for a couple of hours on foot) if only to have another look again. Also, another place to poster is Gt Miss Railway stn as you live nearby if you haven't already done so. I know that Tiga has poss tracked Hector but might just be worth mentioning to Railway staff at Missenden that he is missing from nearby. Good luck with the tracking.xx
Philippa Howells
Claire - just to let you know that Tiga has so far tracked Hector to South Heath! So he clearly went in the opposite direction to what we'd have expected. Also explains why no-one has seen him round Gt Miss/Prestwood. They are still tracking... makes us feel a good deal more optimistic...
Philippa Howells
I should also have said (if this isn't clear from my page) that Hector unfortunately does not have his collar and identity disc on - this is because he escaped at night, and we take his collar off at night for his comfort. So he may well look like a stray, though he is in good condition for his age.
Philippa Howells
Dear all, Kay's friend Jenny is coming over today with her tracker beagle, Tiga; she reckons that if anyone can find Hector, they can. We are so incredibly grateful. Even if Hector is no longer with us, we would much rather know that - it's particularly hard for our children, who are really fond of him. On leaflets: Kay - everyone in Bernards Close, Trafford Road and Trafford Close knows. I actually think going up into Prestwood is likely to be more fruitful than Great Missenden itself; we usually walk Hector in the field and woods behind Trafford Road, which go on up to Prestwood. But I'm guessing that having a go with Tiga is likely to be the most profitable thing to do anyhow?
ClaireC
Thanks Philippa and Kay9. Will hae a look/drive around later. Other thought, and never an easy one I hasten to add, is to check with your Highways Dept thro your Council to see if they have had any reports in or collection of a dog in your area. Sorry but always worth checking out but it does make them aware of a missing dog as well especially as Hector is not chipped. xx
Kay9
I'm printing out about 200 leaflets to put through letterboxes asking people to check back gardens etc. Have you leafleted any roads already? If so, which ones please and I'll pick up where you left off.
Philippa Howells
He's 14, is pretty agile but limps slightly, and he is very deaf and partly blind - just old-dog-it is. We have put a poster up in Hildreths, as well as in the chemists and the PO in Prestwood. Estate agents a good idea. No sign of him yet.
ClaireC
What is Hector's age and is he still very agile?
ClaireC
Hi, sorry hubby didn't see him. However we did think that the Garden Centre at Prestwood might be a good place to poster. Also the estate agents in Prestwood are other good outlets to drop a poster into and of course, some leaflets as they are out and about going to and from the local area. There is also a florist in Prestwood who also goes out and about. I can have a look around from late morning tomorrow if Hector hasn't been located by then. xx
Philippa Howells
Thanks Claire and Bob. Yes, we have posters up in all nearby villages (Prestwood, South Heath, Kingshills). Still no sightings of him at all and I am afraid we are feeling rather pessimistic now.
BobMH
Have you put up posters in nearby villages - might be worth drawing a 2 mile circle around your house and postering in all the villages just in case he has wandered. We have put up posters in our areas of Chesham.
ClaireC
Hi, I am at the Dentist in Prestwood this am. Whilst I am in the chair I will send my husband out for a drive around the hill area down to Missenden. He can have a search for at least 1 and half hours! Tomorrow, if Hector hasn't been found/returned home, I can go out and have a look around the area. Good luck xx Last edited: 2013-11-11 10:30:26 by ClaireC
Philippa Howells
Thanks TigerLilly100 - yes, we are doing that, and we are in touch with local vets, shelters etc. We were out at dusk today - no luck. I have to say that I think, assuming he is still ok, that someone having picked him up is most likely now. no-one has seen him round here, and I think if he were about somebody would have.
TigerLilly100
Keep and eye on www.lostdogsuk.co.uk.
It's the councils dog warden site.

I really feel for you, just too horrible to lose a dog. I walked up a narrow, muddy path to some woods, but wonder if it was too steep a climb for an old Hector. Would he maybe be more likely to go downhill and be somewhere along the valley? Could you take a little disposable barbecue to the fields behind the library? Dawn and dusk tend to be the times when lost dogs are out and about looking for food, so perhaps once it's dark? He'll also be looking for water, so rivers are worth checking. My hope is that someone has taken him in thinking him a stray, and will let the dog warden or a rescue centre know on Monday, so do make phone calls tomorrow to Stokenchurch, Blue Cross, CDRS, RSPCA etc as well as the dog warden. I will try to get out at dawn tomorrow with more sausages. Hope there's news soon.Last edited: 2013-11-10 15:42:19 by Kay9
Philippa Howells
Thanks so much, Kay9. As you say, people are aware of him. We've had one walk up in the woods this morning and will go up more in the Prestwood direction again. Will try another poster drop and possibly leafleting tomorrow - the difficulty is knowing quite where to leaflet drop, but we can have a go. Really appreciate everyone's help; it is so upsetting; he is so much part of the family - arrived before the children (who are v upset).
Kay9
Just back from Missenden. Lots of people out walking dogs and aware of Hector. Leaflets through doors is a good idea - A6 size is fine - asking people to check gardens and giving them the number to phone. I'll walk Amersham/Hyde Heath area from now in case Hector's come this way. I do hope he's home soon.
BobMH
We will be there this afternoon. Have you thought about putting leaflets through doors too? It's time consuming but in our case it helped find him as the important sightings were from people who did not have dogs and hadn't seen the posters but saw our dog from their house and back gardens.

We will walk our dogs in your area tomorrow and see if we can see him. We can also put up posters which we know from experience really makes a difference. We lost our dog recently but with the help of many kind people found him after 5 days.
Kay9
Ah, poor Hector. Good that he loves his food though, I've taken some sausages out of the freezer and will cook them tomorrow to take out with me. If he's near, they should tempt him. Leave some of his favourite dog food in a bowl in your garden/porch tonight - he may pick up the scent and get back on familiar territory. I'll check in tomorrow before going out, hope he's back home by then.
Philippa Howells
Thanks Kay9. We live in Great Missenden near the station. Hector has wandered before, but never for as long and he's always stayed pretty local. We suspect he went out on the scrounge after food but then got disorientated and has gone in the wrong direction. He gets a bit confused as he is quite old.
Kay9
Sorry that Hector's missing, hope he's soon back home. Would you be more specific about where he's missing from please, HP16 is a big area. I'm in Amersham and am happy to go out looking tomorrow if he isn't found this evening. When you go out searching, be sure to carry some smelly food and cook sausages & bacon etc with your windows open in case he's still nearby. Good luck. x
