SHE'S HOME, SHE'S HOME!

A huge THANK YOU to DOGLOST for the invaluable work you do and to all you wonderful people out there who read this post and kept your eyes peeled, ears open and those who put posters up. We can't thank you enough.

Our beautiful girl is called Kirby and we didn't want her name broadcast on posters etc due to the type of person we believed took her. We can now piece together Kirby's journey. It seems as though she was stolen last Wednesday as we believed all along, probably by opportunists, as her identity tag and microchip tag had been removed but she still had her collar on. She obviously managed to escape - I would imagine she saw a window of opportunity and ran or she attacked as she felt threatened. Either way, she was found later that same day at the side of the A50 about to cross the road and was rescued by another dog lover (by the sounds of it he actually saved her from being hit by a car) and taken back to their house where she was well looked after. They couldn't feel a microchip (which has probably moved then!) so waited until they saw the advert in the Sentinel newspaper and called us last night in response to it.

We are so happy to have her back. Her rescuers wouldn't take the reward money so we are splitting it between DOGLOST and Animal Lifeline in Stoke on Trent and thanking a few individuals who have been invaluable in their help and support. There are some truly wonderful people out there.

Thank you all once again. We are so happy to have her back.
Anna, Kirby and family xxx

Anna, also I am going to text you so that you have my number. If you have any sightings reported to you - at any time of day or evening - PLEASE let me know straight away on my mobile and I will do my very best to get to the sighting area as quickly as I can. I mean that most sincerely. I live in a very central part of the city and know the entire area like the back of my hand. I also have a lot of flexibility with my time and can usually jump up and get out very quickly to most areas (unless I happen at the time to be out dog-walking in the middle of the countryside!). I have studied your gorgeous girl's photo so well that I would know her if I saw her. So PLEASE, any sightings and don't hesitate to let me know straight away, also feel free to get in touch if you just need any local information.
Gaynor
Anna, I don't use Facebook or Twitter, but is there any chance you can get her on there? If she's thought to be stolen, then she needs to be made 'too hot to handle' as the saying goes and this would help to do that I think if there is some way that she can be 'tweeted' around the Stoke-on-Trent area? Can anyone do this please if Anna can't?Last edited: 2012-06-17 20:42:33 by Gaynor

So many thanks to Gaynor, jacsblacks, Su, FrankieB, DogLost staff and helpers and to anyone who has read this and are keeping eyes and ears open for us. It means so much to us and gives us a much better chance of finding our pup. Thank you.

Hi Anna, thanks for the info. I completely echo your thoughts about why she may have been stolen, as that is not unknown in this area, and my guess it that it would probably be opportunist thieves just passing by and who probably live not too far away. If the Sentinel will run the story and a good photo then with fingers crossed it might bring someone forward who has been offered or actually bought her. Also if the purchasers are decent people then at some stage they may take her to a vet or the PDSA to be checked over and her microchip will be picked up on. Where I was parked in Hanley on Wednesday morning is literally a five-minute walk from where she went missing, oh how I wish I had seen her. As you're not living in the area, it's doubly difficult for you so I will absolutely ensure that I keep my eyes and ears open and try to spread the word.Last edited: 2012-06-17 12:46:55 by Gaynor
Anna
Hi Gaynor, I need to tell you, we live in Shrewsbury and my husband was working on a property in the area where our pup was taken from. He does a lot of property maintenance around Stoke on Trent and the dogs are nearly always with him and have never gone missing before! They probably recognise a lot of areas but know they aren't real home. We believe she was probably lured away and stolen for a quick sale to an unsuspecting family maybe for the next 'fix' for someone - not a pleasant thought, but we believe this could have been the case. She was taken about 10.30am ish on Wednesday. You're right, the dog running by the bike probably wasn't her, but we just don't know - she knew we weren't there and if she'd already been fed by this family, and she likes bikes she might just have done... who knows! We are constructing a proper story for the Sentinel that they should hopefully run. I'll contact them tomorrow about it and keep you posted. Thanks so much for your ideas.
Gaynor
Anna, I agree it does sound as if they were two different dogs, unless of course the person who saw the tied-up dog didn't spot that there was also a bicycle alongside her. Perhaps the teenage girl ties the dog up to guard her bike while she goes into the bank etc, and then unties her to run alongside afterwards as they go home? The timings would fit in for that given the two locations. I would question whether anyone would steal her and then blatantly leave her tied up so close to her real home just the following day, even with a change of lead. It may be worth asking the Big Issue seller who stands at the front of M&S every single day (I'm sure you've seen him) whether he's seen anyone with a Collie as I don't think he misses much that goes on in the main square there. He might for example know of a person who always brings their dog into town and ties it up around there, which would then rule at least one of the sightings out if they are two different dogs. As for the second sighting, even though she loves bikes and children and is so well trained, is your dog likely to so easily run alongside a new person ... wouldn't she instead make a dash for it and try to find her way home? If this is not your dog, then it sounds as if it must be another very well-trained pet who probably does that run regularly with her bicycling owner, so with a bit of luck could be seen in Forest Park and eliminated..... have you postered there? Might be worth a walk around there to ask anyone you see if they know of this girl. So frustrating when you don't know if the sightings are definite or not. I was in Hanley town centre myself on Wednesday between 11.30 and 3.00 (not sure what time exactly she went missing, and in what circumstances?) and on Thursday afternoon between 3.00 and 4.00, and saw no dogs whatsoever (if I ever see one tied up I have to stand and watch until its owner comes back as I'm always so concerned about them being stolen ... I wish people wouldn't do it!). I think if you contact the Sentinel to ask them to do a piece you will need to be able to tell them something which will make it seem 'not just another lost dog' story .. so something which really confirms the suspicion that she may have been stolen, or something which really tugs at the heartstrings (or even something such as 'she's so obsessed with bicycles that we think she's jumped over the wall to chase after one') ... just something to encourage them to do the piece! Also try Radio Stoke as they might put something out.

Please visit and check The City Dogs Home each day if possible, they are very busy. I will look out for her as I live locally. I hope she is home soon.

Anna I will get her a magazine advert as soon as possible but it will be a couple of weeks before it's published.
Anna
Thank you so much for your lovely comments - we miss her terribly. We have contacted City Dogs Home and Animal Lifeline and my husband will go and visit both on Monday just to double check! On my list to do is an advert for the Sentinel - I regularly check the pets for sale on their websites and so many others too. I like your idea about a piece for the paper - I'll discuss it with them, thanks for that. We did go on Thursday and leaflet around the Hanley area. We had 2 potential sightings that morning from people we spoke to later in the day, so they couldn't confirm for certain it was her. The one was in Hanley centre near Greggs and Lloyds bank. She was tied up with a chain round her neck waiting patiently but alert (looking for us? - she previously had a nice leather collar on from us!)this was apparently about 10.30am. The second was around 11am - a teenage girl was riding a bike with a collie running alongside with no lead on - the dog didn't go on the road which the witness was amazed at. This was seen on Town Road B5047 by entrance to Forest Park where I believe they went in. So it sound like the 2 probably weren't the same dog. We regularly ride with our dogs (we have a 10 year old Collie too) and we have taught them both about the roads etc. They are hardly ever on leads as they are under voice control and whistles. We hope this helps and thank you so much for your help - it means such a lot to us.
Gaynor
What a gorgeous girl. I live locally (Stoke area) and will keep a keen look-out as I'm out and about an awful lot. Have you been to the City Dogs' Home and to Animal Lifeline kennels? It may be good to take them both a poster and to visit regularly as you shouldn't just take their word for it that she isn't there. Would also suggest a Sentinel ad as soon as possible? If you think she's been stolen then it might also be worth contacting the Sentinel and asking them if they'll do a small piece on her to raise as much awareness as possible that she's missing. Hope you have a sighting or news of her soon .. if you have any sightings please post them on here and I will get out looking in the area as soon as I can for you.Last edited: 2012-06-16 20:10:10 by Gaynor
