Still not found my boy, i think of him all the time. i always hoped if someone had him he might of found his way to a vet and would of been scanned
i always live in hope!
zakisawhippet
Thank you MarkB My husband went to see it this morning, and it was not Zak!
The mystery continues! i kind of hoped that it would be him, as i really would like some closure now!

I saw the remains of what looks very much like a whippet near Highgate Woods today. As you exit Bridge Gate from the woods go to the right of the bridge and descend towards the old railway bed, part way down there is a rope swing and 3 to 4 metres north east from this is the remains of a dog. Sorry to have to report but thought it better you know (if this is Zak). MLast edited: 2012-04-11 22:15:58 by MarkB

This may be a long shot but someone has posted on another page that there has been a whippet picked up in Bedford in very malnourished condition and taken to Appledown Kennels in Dunstable. Sex or colour isn't known but it might be worth getting in touch with the kennels. You never know x

I keep checking back for news on Zak x

Was it the out of hours dog warden? Do you know if was a genuine company? Do you travellers anywhere near? If so poster the sites heavily, and we can amend the reward to CASH reward first, as that will be better. Let us know. x
zakisawhippet
I am still waiting for any more news on this lurcher type dog that was picked up in north London, looks like it may of been at the end of Nov, which was when Zak was last sighted! it was an private out of hours company that collected him, and i just want to find out who this company is so that i can ask them some questions about the dog, if only to rule out! its eating away at me. If any one has any information it would be greatly appreciated? i will try all dogs matter-thank you x
poorlittlepepper
Have you tried All Dogs Matter. They are based in Finchley N2 not far from the archway. He may be taken there.http://www.alldogsmatter.co.uk/

Zak's mummy, if this is Zak walking along the streets, he may well have place to stay e.g. with a homeless person, or a shop that looks after him, or something like that. With so many sightings he must have been fed and safe. Just keep that hope alive and renew the posters every so often and see if you can get some publicty again, maybe the local radio. Whatever comes to mind. You have done so well searching for your Zak and wherever he is, he is always your Zak and always will be. He knows you love him, dogs are telepathic. If he could get home, he would. Keep doing what you are doing. Wherever he is, Zak has one absolutely fantatic mummy! God bless you and sweet Zak. Come on baby, where are you? xxx

Hey everyone,
Ive just spoken to the owner and have searched Zaks lost report for a period of 200 days and then seperately searched every dog that has arrived with us since the beginning of January. As far as whippets go, we havent had any arrive with us as strays, nor greyhound crosses, lurcher types etc (just in case he had been inputted as a different breed!) I have also searched our found reports for each North London warden in case they had emailed us that they had picked up a whippet and I am still coming up blank. The only report I can find is for a blue Bedlington picked up from North London around the 9th so that would correspond with roughly 10 days ago - I know we wouldnt mix up a Bedlington with a Whippet but for a general member of public, they may just recall a small blue/grey dog being picked up? Im really coming up blank here so if anyone has any other details, please feel free to contact me! I have advised owner to check with the Mayhew as they are North London based and a lot of people do mix us rescues up and believe we are all and one.
zakisawhippet
Hi Guys
Things have gone quiet as we have had no more sightings since november! i dont know what else to do?
i still walk every wednesday with my friend to the woods in hope!
I have been told that a whippet or lurcher type dog was taken into battersea about 10 days ago, he was picked up in North London tick and he had been out for a while tick and he was hard to catch tick! they did not find a chip i believe and my boy is chipped! but nothing is fool proof. i have spent all day trying to find out from battersea which is proving very difficult? i have left 3 messages and know one has called me back? The two ladies i spoke too can not give me any information on this dog? All i need to know is where abouts in North london, what colour is he! is he neauterd! i think we will have to go in there! why is it so difficult! my lost dog record with them has now expired after 3 months so there could be no match found on the computer! is it possible somebody like battersea could miss a chip? i just need to rule it out! is this picked up dog Zak?

Zakisawhippet, is anyone monitoring the areas of the sighting? Have you managed to accomplish what cfsmith suggested regarding mapping Zak's travels? I'm sure, although it's time consuming, it's just perseverance with these ideas until that lucky time when he'll arrive on the spot when you are there.... your boy is always on my mind; I want to spur you and Dan on, don't relent in your efforts.

Bumping Zak due to another sighting.
Gillian
It's good that you're still getting sightings but this must be so frustrating for you! Hope you or someone can get hold of Zak soon x
zakisawhippet
so in got a confirmed sighting of zak again from a close friend that said it was her friend that saw him who we have met with zak a few times, she said that he was outside the onslow gate on muswell hill road sniffing around the bins in between the bus stop and the onslow entrance, she was in her car with her kids and when she saw him she spun around but he was gone! she did say he was filthy though(i am sure he would be after 3 months) it was at 4pm x
Andy
That sighting in Southwood Lawn Road N6 Yesterday is very near to the last exit at the Highgate/Queens Woods end of the Parkland Walk South, where ZAK was originally lost! That last exit (Highgate end) is in Holmsdale Road, off Archway Rd, for those who don't know!Last edited: 2011-10-29 14:55:32 by Andy

Searches for missing dogs are sometimes unproductive as most of the time you are searching a small part of a very large area.
The advise i would give is to build up a map of Zak's travels, this would give an indication of a particular route/track he might be useing & also at what time, Its surprising how much it will show. Use google earth to give you a view of the land, this will also show most of the tracks through woods etc.
Once you have this information then get as many pairs of people as you can together to sit at predetermined sights along his route, this will help further by either by confirming his route or hopefully by enabling one of your spotters to coax him close enough for capture.
Take a look at Michelle Kellington-Hands document on what to do isf you spot Oscar on Facebook Group "Oscar Is Missing", Its very good advise for what to do when you get close enough to Zak.
Good luck & i hope Zak gets home to you home soon, in the meantime stay positive & best wishes.

oh kimmybear i stumbled across your page and i am so sorry about cassie! you know what i am going through as you have been through it yourself! Thank you for all your support, i some times wish i could get some closure one way or the other(terrible i know) but all of this is un bearable! not knowing if we will ever catch him and whether or not it is him we are chasing? xx
Ellie
I do hope you receive some good news soon. Posters were well in evidence (along with Poppys HP22 and Danas S25) at Midland Counties show today, many thanks to Berties family.
zakisawhippet
Hi steph if that was him on southwood road you would be right in saying that he is going back towards his original sight! it is close to north wood road n6 where he was seen alot when he first went missing!
zakisawhippet
Thank you berties Family that is most kind!
zakisawhippet
There were two sightings of Zak today one i am not quite so sure about? a lady said there was a whippet running loose in the childrens playground of high Gate woods! with no owner she was vague on his appearance but said it was defo a whippet! cant see zak going in there but who knows maybe by accident? i dont know whether he was shooed out by a parent? but the dog wardens were not informed and nobody else called me? so i dont really know? He was seen in the morning before the possible playground sighting on Southwood Lawn road n6 which is not too far from the woods more queens wood side(which runs parallel to high gate woods) so we will poster the area tomorrow! The lady said that he seemed very confident and seemed to know his way around she followed him for a bit and then lost sight! x Last edited: 2011-10-28 19:02:52 by zakisawhippet

Will bump Zak as there was a sighting of him last week.He appears to be going back to his earlier tracks but will confirm with owners.zakisawhippet, have tried to call Dan but couldn't get through, could you let us know the area Zak was spotted in please, thanks.x
Berties Family
I have printed 50 posters to take with me to Midland Counties dog show tomorrow - I will place these next to the schedules - someone somewhere may have seen him - people travel from all over to this show at Stafford so hopefully people will take a poster if they are local to you or even post on here x
Catwoman
Ignore those idiot park keepers. Dogs are basically wolves when you take away the breeding, and will adapt to look after themselves. Hope you get news soon.
zakisawhippet
Hi yes we were in the paper i did leave a post about it, but nothing as of yet has come from it! Had a false sighting on the heath on friday but i just knew it wasnt him so i didnt post, and my thought's were correct it wasnt poor Zak! he seems to be lying low again with nothing for the past eight days? so we will just wait and see? we have tried the trap again with no joy! Thank you for all your kind words and support i am pleased to see you all following Zaks progress and that you have not given up hope for me finding my poor boy! x come home zak and Dana x
Berties Family
can a search be arranged???? maybe 13th November if still not caught?

Thanks, Whippetlover, for your input to my comment. I wouldn't know where to start, so I'm delighted zakisawhippet has your help on this potential lifeline.

Facebook was used very effectively in the hunt for Tye (the whippet that went missing a couple of weeks ago). If you are not familiar with using facebook, then please have a look at the posts I left on Tye's DogLost page as to how best set up a facebook 'Fan' page rather than a personal page (although you need to set up a personal page first in order to administer the fan page).
CP
Can't see Zak on facebook - has he got a "missing" page?
CP
As everyone will tell you there will be times like this, Zak's mum, but try to accept it as hard as it is and keep up that postering. Someone more knowledgeable than I on this site will help you add those "still missing" words to the original poster so that anyone helping you in the vicinity can print it off without altering by hand; it does look eye catching and professional that way. Were you ever able to get an article about him in the newspaper? I do feel it would be very beneficial. You could point out as a human interest side to this story which papers usually go for, the fact that you're in a delicate condition and how you're struggling to cope - do think about giving it a try. Whatever it takes to give your boy a helping hand home I'm sure you'll do. x
zakisawhippet
hi thank you we have already altered the posters! As i did think that was a good idea! just really struggling with the thought of him on his own all the time, he must be so lonely! i am so frustrated with it all, i get so close yet so far all the time! No sightings for 1 week now, but he has been doing this where he will lie really low for about two weeks and then all the sightings come in again? x we all really miss him and the fireworks worry me! i just feel like i cant do this anymore i just want some closure!i feel like i have hit rock bottom again now after feeling more positive! His bed and coat are in the cellar and i had to go down there today, i really love that boy! x
CP
Would like to suggest it's time to alter poster to read "Still Missing" - it does make a difference to the reader's perception.
Berties Family
just keep on with your good work, only those who have been through this know how hard it is to actually sight a dog you are searching for - dont forget dogs are cleverer than most people, they know who to be sighted by and who not to go near. whippets are very similar to foxes even the blue ones from a distance. can you get other dog walkers to go around the area at the times Zak has been spotted? keep on with the trap too - read poppy whippets page and also poppy the cocker spaniel and see the ideas they have recieved from people which you could try.
CP
Thanks, zakisawhippet, for keeping us all in the picture. Although I don't post much on the thread as, like you, it's difficult to know what more to do, I'm always logging on for update and constantly saying prayers for Zak's return. Do carry on doing as much as you can for your lovely boy and don't give up. x
zakisawhippet
So set the trap on friday but nothing unfortunately, I was told by two of the park wardens that my dog is not in these woods as they are here every day and have never seen him? They think it is another whippet having a walk that people see, but the sightings are always in highgate, despite the fact that there are posters in other areas and we never hear anything from them! And that a dog would never survive this long! it made me so angry, i told them to chk out dog lost so they can see for them selves how common it is! i had a few cross words with other dog walkers about the trap being there(it was being manned) but thank fully most dog walkers were understanding when they had to try and keep there dog away from the lovely smells of meat in the trap! The local news paper had failed to mention that we have had lots of sightings of Zak so it sounded like we were bonkers in the article!(ha) i do feel that local people think he has been stolen, they find the idea of him living feral quite hard to take in? i dont know what to do now i suppose just wait for more sightings! thanks Andy for your cont support it is appreciated i think when we all stop looking he will turn up! x
Andy
Hi J. I've told and shown (and will keep on telling and showing) all of the dog walkers and regular dog owners over the Heath so that's taken care of! It's a surprisingly small community at this time of year and they all know about Zak. x
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Zak's mummy, nothing is impossible, okay? You have more sightings - there is always hope. Keep up the postering in these areas. Can anyone help with postering far and wide as Zak's owners could really do with some help? Wish I was nearer to help you. Did you get tracker? Whatever you do, remember many dogs get back home after months. Dogs are very clever at living wild too. Zak has his chip, which is on his side. God bless you and Zakky. x
Whippetlover
zakisawhippet, you zak and the other missing whippets are in my thoughts every day. I can only imagine that this is very difficult time for you but please try and stay positive. Try to take comfort from the recent sightings. Eventually someone will get close to him and then you will have your chance.
zakisawhippet
Been out again all morning at the woods but nothing! feel so low now,the nights are cold and just feel like i will never get him back! I am going to use the trap on friday, but its just on the off chance really as there are no regular sightings of him to go off! Had a few phone calls of support from the flyers that were put through peoples doors by very kind whippet owners who have been following zaks progress, Thank you so much!
I feel incredibly low today cant stop thinking about him! i am at the woods again later! so pleased about poppy great news!x
zakisawhippet
Hi Kimmybear Dan phoned the number of the tracker dog today but it appeared to be the wrong one? any chance of you re-sending it pls? thanks xx

Great news regarding sightings, I have posted a recipe on Poppy whippets page of some very tasty food which you could place into a trap if you get the right area for him....fingers crossed you get him back soon

zakisawhippet
we had another sighting yesterday(sat) cranley gardens but bottom end walking up towards muswell hill rd, whippet on his own? i would love to see Zak myself!do not know where to put the trap in the woods, we are defo going to trap a lot of dogs i think, but i dont think after dusk when the woods is closed is the best thing to try again!one of us needs to mann the trap between the the hours of 4-6pm! Steph if Dan could pick the trap up friday lunch pls! its the only day he can commit to next week! And he can pick up and drop off at usual place pls? x two whippet owners who live nearby are very kindly posting flyers for me at all the houses that back onto the woods! so people may check there sheds!
we miss him so much we watched a video of him today and it broke my heart just wanted to stroke his silky ears! we all love you zak! xx
Catwoman
Please don't give up. We were lucky and found our whippet yesterday after a long time. She finally went into the trap. Dogs are clever creatures, and the majority of humans love them and want to help. You will get him back.
zakisawhippet
spoke to the lady who saw him at 630 and i am convinced it must be Zak, she said he was on his own and was light brown(fawn) and white! she was most helpful and seemed genuine! but who knows! have re-posted new area! x
zakisawhippet
Oh whipmum i am sorry. Dana is out there somewhere, maybe the cold weather will bring her out of hiding? it amazes me how well dogs can survive, living feral. They are probably having a great time! Pls keep your chin up!
x
whipmum
Hi Zac's mum, keep doing what you are doing at least you know somewhat the area he's in bless him, DANA on the other hans seems to have disappeared into thin air, after tracking the wrong Whip for 3 weeks, no further sightinds at all, dont really know what to do next, got to do sometning but dont know what, have started to reposter the local area again, she was in the local papers, still nothing a syat, keep up your searc we need our babies home !
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Me again! Okay, when dogs go missing, strange things can happen. I would poster heavily around that new sighting area and even poster in completely different areas because you just never know what has occurred. It is always possible someone picked Zak up and deposited him in this other green area. This would mean he can't necessarily find his way home from there. Or, as some dogs do, Zak has walked a few miles. Plot this new sighting on a map with the others as it's possible this new area is part of Zak's triangle. He might go to the first place, then on to this new place and then somewhere else. You may be able to guess the 3rd point of the triangle. Zak's mum, it could be that tracker person is on holiday. Have you tried phoning to speak or hear a message?
zakisawhippet
Just had a look on google maps and actually its not that far at all really that is why we posted that area! it is more than possible he would be there?i hope he makes his way back to high gate woods!
x
zakisawhippet
Dan keeps on texting the lady with the tracker dog with no avail?
zakisawhippet
Hi ok 5pm he was seen walking down muswell hill rd past onslow gate!
then at 630 a lady phoned to say that she had seen him, and that he ran towards hampstead heath village before a sign indicating that she was entering the kenwood estate from the west part, she could hear the traffic from spaniards lane! for those of you who do not know the area this new sighting has thrown me it is not his usual place and is a little distance out! pretty further actually but not impossible, that is why we posted around there! she said she thought it was a dear at first and it looked like the colour on the poster! so all that leaves is for me to now re-post further out! just wish i could know for sure if it was my boy so confused! i have managed to get someone for each day to be at the woods between 4-5 all next week in the hope someone will see him! x
DogLostAunt Stef - Area Volunteer, West London
Another sighting of Zak so bumping.zakisawhippet could you just post up where Zak has been spotted this time, thanks & well done getting the local press on board.
zakisawhippet
Hi yes thank you my husband has been going every morn for the past 10weeks to leave food and scent by his blanket! the local ham and high paper are covering my story next thurs they are taking a picture tomorrow of me by his feeding station! x hope it helps
Berties Family
have you tried leaving food or treats by his blanket - if you could do this at the same time he may wait locally for you to arrive
zakisawhippet
spent all morn at woods today met some lovely people who have been looking for zak as well! Met a lady who is going to contact local paper! so should get some coverage from that! The more people that know he is out there the better! there were some of his hairs on his blanket this morn so thats promising, we waited around where his blanket is and my friends dog started barking at something in the undergrowth, but we couldnt see anything!something was there who knows if it was Zak? x
DogLostOwl
Oops sorry, should have checked, didn't see Zak is neutered as Kimmybear posted while I was writing. But they often still take an interest in a bitch in season.Last edited: 2011-10-11 23:22:23 by Owl
zakisawhippet
Hi we had thought of that one but as he was neutered had not given it much further thought! they do say that the urge never completely goes!
i wish zak was not in such a popular area sometimes as there are so many dogs all the time it is such a hard place to mann a trap! Dan slept in the woods last time when they were locked up but its so black just dont think he is using them after dusk, Dan is scenting still and i am going tomorrow! Dan is going to try and speak to kimmybear re; tracker dog as we seem a bit unclear? from the texts! we need to have a think about where and what to do with the trap? hopefully get another sighting soon? x
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Well, if Owl says it may work, go for it! Anything worth a try. x
Catwoman
Hi, Good luck in catching your whippet. We are in the same position trying to catch 'Poppy' my friend's whippet who escaped from kennels. She is enjoying life on a land fill site and as yet, has not ventured into the trap. She seems to be spotted in the late afternoon, when it is her walk time. Have you searched at walkie times? Fingers crossed for you.
Berties Family
what if owners scent from each area of park and meet in an area where they can trap - leaving food etc at the end of the scent - this may get him into one area of the park
DogLostOwl
Yes Whippetlover, your suggestion is good and might well work. It wouldn't be the first time a whippet has been brought home with a "honey trap".
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Zak has been neutered and as he is running scared, I would suspect this won't help much. Zak would respond to his owners scent, but the problem is locating his whereabouts at the same time. They seem to keep missing each other. Illegal to leave trap without manning it because it could kill, shock, distress any wildlife caught in it. Also, it would stress Zak if he was caught in it and no one was there to let him out. You need to monitor a trap 24/7. Keep thinking though, please..... We need to Zak home urgently.
Whippetlover
What if some of the bitches urine could be collected and spread in an area close to where zak has been sighted, putting some feed down there and a dog trap too? Would that work? Perhaps someone at Dogs Lost could say whether or not this might work?
Berties Family
i possibly know of a bitch due in season in a week's time, I saw earlier post- if he is still out can possibly arrange for her to pay the area a visit over a couple of days, may help to get him out scenting and noticed.....will keep checking page and let you know if he is still not found
CP
Would they not allow you to leave the trap overnight if you ensured you checked it as soon as the woods were open? (In case you've captured wildlife). I would have thought this was the best time to "catch" him as he safely prowls in the quietness of the woods. Good luck for today, will be thinking of you. x
DogLostOwl
zakisawhippet, I will give you a call tomorrow and hopefully we can have a discussion about where Zak is and how a tracker might be used. Out now and not back until late, sorry.
zakisawhippet
Hi CP you are right about focusing on the positive, some days are just darker than others!i am visiting the area as often as i can when work does not permit, i have been walking every wednesday with a lady i met through loosing Zak,and her whippet also, we have a good long walk and a sit! we are off to spend the day there today! the wardens will not allow us to put the trap in the woods during the day as it is so busy with dogs esp labs who always find the food we leave for zak and eat it Ha, the only way we can do it is to be locked in after dark which is when i assume zak is lying down for the night? can dogs see as well as cats in the dark? the wood is black at night! thanks for the number kim we will phone today and find out more info regarding the tracker dog! x
minigirl
not anywhere nearby to help but sending lots of good wishes.x
CP
In relation to your last posting, zakisawhippet, and you not knowing what else you can do. Are you able to regularly visit Zak's sighted areas as often as your delicate condition will allow, and within the times you state he's been seen? It would be fantastic if you could develop a routine within those times like he appears to have done. Not quite understanding why a trap cannot be placed inside one of these areas so long as it is visited regularly. As I understand it, there are certain rules about how often traps need to be checked out, and of course permission obtained in the first place - has this possibility been explored? Also, reading Owl's thread, I rather got the impression from your postings that Zak was within a massive woodland area (which is where Owl said Wispa could help) and that the gardens aspect, where Zak only might be hiding (Owl mentions is not Wispa's forte), was only speculation. Have I got it wrong.....?
DogLostOwl
Using dogs to track missing dogs is something that people are just beginning to develop and we are learning as we go along. I know that even if Wispa and I were near enough, we might not be much help in an urban area because Zak will be nipping in and out of gardens and the residents wouldn't want us squeezing through fences after him. The situation where we can help is where a dog has disappeared into acres of open countryside or woodland. You would need a dog who is steadier in traffic than Wispa. Some dogs who are trained for humans can also track dogs, it just depends on the skills of that particular dog and they are all different in what they can or can't do. It does come more naturally for them to track other dogs than anything else, because the activities of other dogs are interesting to them. I have not trained Wispa at all. She would come along with me when I was out searching as I knew she would notice any other dog around, and then as soon as she realised what we were trying to do she took over. I wish I could be more helpful, but urban tracking is not our forte.

A tracker dog must be specifically trained to track dogs, most are trained for humans, prey or drugs as in police dogs, so make sure you find the right type of tracker dog as it will be no good if the wrong one. I'll see if we still have a name of someone. I don't know the cost or even if they are in your area, but its the sort of thing I would do if it were my dog. The tracker man should be able to tell you if it could work and in what circumstances etc. Right now Zak has gone into dog survival mode, so he will be very clever as avoiding people and obtaining food and water. However, a dog on the run, even a full up dog, will still want to investigate a food source. No matter what Zak eats, if he's outside he will need a lot more to cope with the demands of wild living, so he'll definately check out a BBQ somehow. Wishing he was home now with you. x
CP
Would think, zakisawhippet, that even though he may not be hungry the smell will hit his nostrils and as he gives his attention to this highly tuned sense that a dog has, he could well find the familiar scent of you amongst it, too (I don't mean perfume, by the way). We can only guess and try it as often as poss. You can't work him out any more as you say, and I would think he's not acting in his normal way anyway because of his circumstances. I can imagine it's even difficult locking the door at night knowing he's out there but, as hard as it is, I feel you need to focus on all the positive things you've been doing and continue in that vain. Looking after yourself is part of that scheme and that way you'll be ready to do whatever it takes to get Zak home. All very well, I hear you say but more of the same great stuff you've been doing is, in my opinion, the way forward. One thing is for sure, if Zak is to be found postering, searching sighted areas as time allows, bbq-ing, advertising in papers and pursuing local radio if poss. cannot hamper his return it can only help. Take great care and persevere. x

Just found this link for tracking dog services: http://www.southern-support.co.uk/guard-tracking-dogs. I imagine it will be expensive but might be worth checking it out anyway?

zakisawhippet
thanks cp i will try that. he isnt a greedy dog so if he isnt hungry, would the smell bring him out? i just cant work him out! maybe he just does not even want to be caught? my baby is due in ten weeks and all i want is my dog! feel guilty putting the heating on in the house(stupid i know) i cant bare to be cosy when i know he must be so cold! i dont know what to do, spent half day yesterday re-posting and just sitting and watching!Thank you for everybody who has helped us your kindness is much appreciated and everyone who follows Zaks progress, your support has helped me through this difficult time! Andy keep snoopy safe no chasing foxes! x
Whippetlover
Somebody also suggested on another missing dog case about walking around the area with a bitch in season to entice the dog out. I wonder if this could work? Obviously, you firstly need to find a volunteer with a bitch in season.
Whippetlover
Can one of the co-ordinators on this forum give Zak's mum some information on the use of tracking dogs? I notice that one was used by Owl in Dana's case. I realise this is probably out of Owls area but is there somebody with a tracking dog nearer to Zak that could help?
CP
Sorry, should read "you could wrap it up" not "cold wrap". x
CP
Just a thought, zakisawhippet, if you're not already doing this - when you've bbq'd in the street as you say you have to, could you then take your highly tasty/enticing morsels to the area of the sightings? You cold wrap it up to keep it as hot as possible to retain the smell so it permeates the sighting area when you expose it. You can lay low and watch the spot where you leave it or hang around and waft it about. Perhaps you've been doing this already but felt I had to mention it as you didn't indicate what you do with the bbq'd food and with the streets being as busy as you said, couldn't see Zak putting in an appearance for it. You're doing so well; keep doing what you're doing as I remarked on Dana's thread, it's focus and perseverance that pay off in the end. Thinking of you and willing Zak to put in an appearance when you're there. x
Andy
That's exactly where I've been looking because of the concentration of the posters, excellent, will start going over there earlier! No doubt he is hunkering down at night in someone's back garden shed etc. As you know there are many accessible rear gardens all around the perimeters of both woods! Later x
zakisawhippet
i am really worried about him now the weathers getting cold! it was raining through the night on tuesday and i just lay awake thinking of him out there! the whole things torture! whippets really are not designed for the cold! x
zakisawhippet
Hi can you give me some more info on a tracking dog? that sounds like a great idea?
x
zakisawhippet
Hi Andy thank you for your help its most kind! i do remember you and snoopy we have met on a few occasions but not for a while! the lady who has sean i am sure it is the same lady who comes into my dentist as a patient? zak is usually seen around the onslow gate entrance or cranley gardens, last friday he was seen by the huts near the playground! Angus thank you for the bump, we have tried the bbq four times now with no joy! you can not bbq in the woods so the surrounding streets are our only option which do get quite busy i dont know whether thats why! we will of course keep trying! he is always seen between the hours of 8-10am or 4-6pm! so we will work off that, i really dont think his base is in the woods he is just using it for his needs so its hard to think where to put the trap again? there is no where to park the car to watch and mann the trap only inside the wood! xLast edited: 2011-10-07 18:39:55 by zakisawhippet

Can a tracking dog not be used to help find Zak?
Andy
Hi zakisawhippet
I'm Andy and I own Snoopy the Whippet (walk mostly over the Heath) .. Just got back from Highgate/Queens woods with my friend Sharon (+Sean the Whippet).
Sorry, no sighting, I've been going every morning around 10.30ish for a couple of hours for the last two weeks but to no avail! ... fairly sure we've met ZAK in happier times over the heath! Fantastic that you had another sighting just 3 days ago .. which part of which woods was he last seen? I will then focus on that area more!! The dog walkers and groundsmen over Highgate and Queens Woods are really watching out for him too! All my fingers crossed for the safe return of little ZAK. xLast edited: 2011-10-07 17:39:54 by Andy

BUMPED for the recent sighting - it may be worth trying the disposable BBQ if Dan is going to camp out - need something that might draw him in before the weather turns again
zakisawhippet
Hi sorry about the delayed response, we have had a problem with our internet and husband been away again,we had another sighting of zak on tues at around 4pm! in the woods again!i put more posters up as they keep on being removed!! we keep on scenting and think Dan is going to try another night with the trap! before it gets too cold! its very hard to find him where we are as the woods are so dense and he could be 10yards behind you and you would never see him! oh zak 2months on the run! the sightings are great news of course, but they only confirm what we already know! that he is out there by the woods! x
Berties Family
any further sightings yet?
Berties Family
hopefully he will be captured soon, when ours was lost he was reported to be trotting down a main road - ears pricked - tail out and looking like he knew where he was going although he had only been in the area a matter of hours.....whippets are so resilient! but believe me once he is back he will soon be back in his usual routine, then it is harder for us as owners to get over the experience.

I am so pleased! Come on Zakky baby, please come home now! x

zakisawhippet, I'm so happy there has been another recent sighting of Zak - I was worring, that as we hadn't heard from you for a few days that you might be losing hope - so I'm sure this must be a great boost. With lovely weather forecast for the weekend, I imagine there might be further sightings. My concern though, is that people will approach Zak and he will just run off. I do feel that you should get the posters changed to request people don't approach him but contact you straight away if they see him. Maybe you could find a nice shady spot in the park to be on standby in case you get that all important call?
lesleyjane
So hope this is the end of your long wait to get Zac home, I have been following his story and am glad he seems well. Your husband's comments about dogs living in the moment are right as far as I am aware, fingers crossed for you all.xx
zakisawhippet
Thanks steph will continue with everything! two friends have taken there whippets to the woods this morning, we are at a wedding this afternoon so will go first thing the woods open in morning and set up another feeding station close to his new sighting! Lady described his collar to a T! so know it was him, she said he looked well and happy(not to happy i hope) my husband tells me that animals live for the moment and do not dwell on the past or think about the future, so his only thought is surviving each day at a time! its not a bad way to be really! thanks to caroline for all your support! x

So pleased you've been spotted again, gorgeous. Time for trust - and food and a warm bed - Hope your home really soon. Jo xx

zakisawhippet, these sightings are such positive news. I have left a message for you on your answer machine. Zak is still in the area so the answer to your earlier question is to keep doing what you are doing - posters ,scenting, food stations, watching & staking the area out when you can.Changing the plan would not necessarily be any more positive. It is time consuming & frustrating but it's the repeated habit from owners that get these dogs back I'm afraid.
Whippetlover
Great news Zak has been sighted again. The problem seems to be that nobody can ever get near him. I suggested to Dana's mum that the posters were changed to say "IF SIGHTED DO NOT APPROACH AS HE IS SCARED AND WILL RUN AWAY. PLEASE CALL ME STRAIGHT AWAY" Dana's mum has now changed her poster - I would suggest you do the same.
Julie B
I am so glad that Zak has been sighted again this evening. It has probably already been tried - but as you know where he is hanging out (sort of) could you set up a trap with really smelly food (even do a bbq from a distance - to drag him into the area) and just watch quietly. As he is so frightened a trap may be the only answer. I do hope he is back home with you very soon. xx

janiejewel1649 There are so many of us wishing this boy and Dana and all the other lost dogges out there back home I wish I lived to help but alas I am so far away.

bumped for the recent sighting
zakisawhippet
Zak just been spotted again at cranley gate the gate just before onslow gardens! the couple saw him having a wee, then they gently approached him, but something startled him and he then ran off!steph if you have any suggestions what to do i would be grateful? i am at a complete loss what to do any more? there is no pattern to his sightings? it was last tues he was spotted! he has a base nearby for that i am sure!
when i walk around looking for him i do gently call his name and sometimes i just wait in silence-thank you x
CP
Have just noticed, zakisawhippet, on Dana's thread something I was going to suggest to you and that is, have you tried calling (gently not urgently) Zak's name as you're searching? He could well have the confidence to appear if he recognises your voice, whereas he would be more likely to stay hidden if he only hears your movement.
CP
I understand your trust in "the system", zakisawhippet, but sometimes chips migrate to other parts of the body (unless you know for sure that it's still in place as you have Zak scanned at the vets periodically); and, also, things can go awry in busy rescues particularly, where there are well-intentioned people but too much going on. Don't be alarmed in any way but it's always safer to do the checking yourself in person (or Dan) if you see what I mean. If you read about Magic (reunited 24258) starting 11.08.2010 posting you can see how it's as well not to rely totally on other people. I do hope you have some further news over the w/e. x
zakisawhippet
Hi CP thanks for your concern- i would like to think that as he is micro chipped he would be scanned and somebody will call us? maybe this isnt always the case? we re-posted again today as looks like the warden has yet again removed posters from the tree's! walked up parkland walk searching, it is so green and so many places to hide, hundreds of houses backing off the woods and the walk!
CP
Zakisawhippet, are you still checking out vets and dog wardens and either you or Dan visiting rescue centres in person? The latter must be difficult for you in your delicate condition, I realise, but staff at these centres are extremely busy and not always aware of every dog coming and going, so visits in person are adviseable. Glad to hear you're carrying on with food and scenting - you're working very hard, it can only lead to a positive outcome.
zakisawhippet
Tried the bbq trick again with another whippet couple, but nothing? its such a shame, there seems to be no real pattern to his sightings, only that they are around the same area! Dan still out there now, thanks so much caroline and Colin, not the result we hoped for! we will stay focused and positive and hope that zak finds his way back to us some how!We will continue with the food and scenting!

Brilliant. As so often happens, these dogs go unseen for ages, leaving owners feeling at a loss & then they pop up again. It can be for a number of reasons but mainly someone being at the right place at the right timeto spot them.
Bumping you up Zak. Now it's time to get you home sweetheart.x

zakisawhippet
Hi so zak just been sighted 5.00pm this evening,at his favourite spot-onslow gate!muswell Hill Road, So Dan going to scent and feed again!and have a look, cant believe he is still out there after no sightings for 2 weeks!
its getting so cold! if any one has a spare hour or two on sat or friday to sit in there car and man a bbq with sausages, it would be appreciated, need about four cars at different exits of the woods to try and attract him! only people who are local of course, no hard feelings if not! xx
zakisawhippet
On Sunday put up more posters around a new area called cherry tree woods which leads off from highgate woods, the wood warden mentioned to my friend who very kindly re posted some more posters for me on sat, that he could well be using this area also.so saturated in posters. It's been two weeks and no sightings,I just wonder if he his sleeping in the day and traveling at night? That would explain why he hasn't been sighted, also very quiet at the moment. It looks like the posters were removed from the tree's by the head wood warden, as it's seen as littering! It spoils the look of the woods! Apparently! It's been five weeks now and 12 sightings altogether and miss him so much, I am still just so upset and stuggle with him not being with us every day, the days are fine but the nights are getting cold and I worry for him! Thank you mel for your kindness I also have a baby due in dec but am very detached at the moment just want my boy back x.
whipmum
well Zacs Mum, seems were on this rollercoaster together, these two Whips have alot to answer for,I bet we both wake thinking this will be the day we find them, it does not matter how long it takes but we will get them back, so chin up, were both in the same boat x
mel
Don't worry not doing anything I'm not up to. Got my boyfriend to whizz me round in the car and have covered posters near Ally Pally, Bounds Green, a bit of Muswell Hill broadway and the walk from there to Highgate Woods. Hopefully they won't be taken down! Fingers crossed you get some news soon xx

Is there any news on this gorgeous boy Zak yet ? xx
zakisawhippet
walked some more today with a lady i met and her whippet to have a look for Zak! lots of my posters have been removed from the woods so have to re- post, really think its people who do not have a dog, thinking its littering the woods? so frustrating, I heard Dana got sighted again so thats given me hope!
please zak and Dana we need you home now! xx
zakisawhippet
its been 10 days now and nothing- hope to get a sighting soon, weather been lovely all week! but still very quiet around the woods!x

thank you x

Dear Zak's mum, I haven't been able to print posters yet as there has been a problem with my printer. My boyfriend is on the case though, hopefully it will be sorted tonight when he gets home. I have been out looking for Zak though and will keep doing so! I've told everyone I know and they are spreading the word too. Please try and stay positive, it must be so hard, but you hear of these wonderful stories of animals being reunited months sometimes years later. Dear zakisawhippet

You are bound to have days like this, particularly at this point when it has been some days since the last sighting. But remember, the weather has been awful for over a week now, so Zak will be sheltering somewhere and only coming out when he really needs to which is going to make him harder to spot.

The forecast for tomorrow is better and Thursday doesn't look too bad either. Try to stay positive....
zakisawhippet
put food down again tonight, feel like he is not there? do not feel very positive if i am truthful, have actually been thinking that maybe he has not made it- living his feral life! cant bare to think of him out there all alone! just dont know what to do with myself, its been a month now and i still hurt and cry every single day! my only hope is a new sighting where the new posters will be! whippets love there comforts and he always had his blanket on him at night which is now just soaking wet in the woods! he never slept on a hard floor, always some where soft, i have to stop torturing my mind with negative thoughts, zak we all want you home x

Fingers crossed, i no what you're going through, i was just the same.

zakisawhippet
Hi, i think the posters that are being taken down are from jobsworth street cleaners? the ones that are missing are the ones that are on bus stops and phone boxes! and my friend tells me it is classed as littering! if i put a poster up on a bus stop they may get a whole notice board going on? Zak was spotted 8 times last week- to not one sighting in seven days? coming home from work and him not being there to greet me kills me everytime! just putting food down still every day and we are borrowing a trap , will be camping out as well again, i cant give up i am so emotionally stressed but can not seem to focus on any thing else! some people look a me like i have gone bonkers when i tell them the length i am going to to get my boy back!not every body understands the love that you can have for your dog!i just pray for another sighting, Dan is back tonight so he is going to put more posters up just around the edges of the triangle shape, zak seemed to be using! walked all around highgate woods again all weekend replaced food put up more posters!hope if he has left this area he will return! maybe all the attention he was getting from people trying to attract him, scared him away? who knows? I am so sorry that Zak is still missing. I agree it does sound suspicious if the posters keep getting removed. Could you not watch from a distance where they are being removed from to see if you can find out who is doing it ? It does sound like Zak might have been taken in by someone. I do hope that you have some positive news soon and that Zak can be back home with you. Have you been able to get a local newspaper to do a story for you as this would get word round? Julie x
CP
Reference your comment, zakisawhippet, about "posters keep getting taken down in a few of the same places again and again". Does this not sound suspicious? It has been suggested in other threads that this kind of action could mean the lost dog is in someone's possession who does not want people to recognise the dog with them as being lost, hence destroying posters. Keep putting them back, repeatedly; I would suggest this is a "hot" area. What do others more experienced in this field think?
zakisawhippet

Zakiswhippet, as a thought, please check with the local council Cleansing Dept and also the Highways Agency if you have one, just to check they haven't seen him as they man the roads. Have you continued to check in with the dog warden too? And, even though he is chipped, you still need to call these places. If I were you, whilst you are not getting sightings, poster far and wide, try the papers to get word out, or the local radio. Sometimes they won't help, but sometimes we are surprised when some help a lot. Worth trying if you haven't already. Apologises if you've already done this. Just trying to think.....
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
He will come back if he has. He will do a little (or big) circuit. Maybe poster out further. The more people aware the better. Sometimes you need to think out of the box. Trying going to a different place other than the current sightings. Where else could he be? Go poster there too. Another place, more people, more possibilities. You are doing so well. Make Zak more famous - make the world know he's out there & you need him home. Keep checking this current area too & keep renewing the posters to show him as STILL missing so people don't forget. If you need inspiration check out some of the Reunited dogs - Cloud the collie comes to mind. You CAN do this! You can get your baby back. x

went to highgate woods at around 5pm to put some pilchards down in the usual place!walked back through park land walk muswell hill but saw nothing!
hope he hasnt gone further a field to where there are no posters, going back to woods tomorrow to put up even more posters! when Dan gets back we can start camping out again, very quiet in the woods not many people around at all, posters keep getting taken down in a few of the same places again and again! really upsetting why people would keep doing this? will post as soon as i have any more news,Thank you mel for your concern it would be lovely if you could print just a few posters off(you can do this from the website) and put a few up!

I live near Ally pally and Janet my dog walker told me about Zak and can't stop thinking about him especially knowing that there have been sightings so close to home. I haven't seen any posters near Bound green/ Wood green so was wondering if I could put some up? If people are made aware that he has been sighted around Highgate Wood and Ally Pally they would hopefully really look out for him! I know a lot of dog owners and have been trying to spread the word. I can't imagagine what your going through, just try and hold onto the fact that he has been seen and that's a really good sign.
CP
On the positive side, zakisawhippet, less people may be around because of school return, but it means the woods will be quieter through the day which may produce more sightings of Zak and, as you say, you'll be more available for searching during the day because your daughter will be at school. You're doing absolutely splendidly, don't lose heart.
zakisawhippet
thanks steph for our brief chat this morning, sorry that i had to rush you!
i feel a bit more positive now, now that i know you have caught dogs that have been on the run for 6 weeks and more!just very keen to get him before the real bitter weather kicks in! i know he is there but less people are around now schools are back, so pray for another sighting?

Dan didnt catch anything not even a fox? maybe Zak just isnt in the woods at night? who knows? the woods are so big and there is another wood across the road and a really long nature trail! there are so many places, the last time he was spotted was on monday lunch! feel so upset! Dan away tomorrow until monday! everybody always phones Dans phone as it is the first number on the poster! might put people off when they here the change in dial tone! eally hope they phone mine if anyone sees him! will keep leaving food when i can!we could do with having the trap in the day but the woods are full of dogs all the time! really need to find out where he is sleeping at night? and keep leaving food to get him back to highgate woods in the day! hopefully we will get more sightings over the weekend and dan can man a trap again on the tuesday! i wont give up on him! next week my daughter starts school so i will spend everyday there walking around!

Dan put pilchards down at a new base at 630 this morning, when i went to the woods to look later there was lots of different dogs all sniffing around where Dan left the food! the owners were all calling them! so it does work the dogs could still smell it! tonight Dan is off to spend the night in the woods with a dog trap, we havent seen him ourselves but i think it is worth a shot! feel really negative though! i hope it works! thanks for letting us borrow you trap steph! yes thank you i have called local taxi firms! thanks heather for your kind words, i too am thinking of you and Dana! x

As has been said,Zak might just lie low while it's raining especially the heavy downpours we've been having ! He will have found himself somewhere sheltered & dry. zakisawhippet I will try & speak to you today or tomorrow with ref to any trap etc as a trap needs to be put in a certain way to lure any dog . As far as calling Zak,as I had said the other day, just quiet, calm, words,Zak's name & good boy but said in very low quiet slow tones. Did you do the whistle thing I suggested when laying food & scent ? This is something that the dog can recognise.

Sure - let's meet tomorrow for coffee (I think you mean wed?) and we can have a walk and look for Zak - just text me when is good. I think the weather is supposed to be better tomorrow. Try not to worry too much about the rain, if Zak's anything like Rufus he'll be very clever at finding somewhere snug and dry to hide from the rain. I will look again today (off out to walk now) but suspect he'll lay low until it's drier. Stay positive though. x
zakisawhippet
a little walk
zakisawhippet
thanks kimmybear your suggestions were most helpful!
feeling very low this morning had a dream that zak was home and it was so real until i woke up! the rain and wind have been coming down all night and all i could think about is my boy sheltering all by himself! i am in such a mess! have to go to work again today but will go with little girl tomorrow to the woods and hang out there! caroline if your around tomorrow and you fancy meeting up! we could have a coffee at one of the cafes and have a little and a chat? if the weather permits for you of course? husband goes away with work this weekend so have to do our best this week! the bbq didnt work not even a fowx came again! i think its because it is by a busy road! the gate is locked you see and there are no bbq allowed in the woods! we tried another quite entrance but being london there was no where to park the car so that dan could keep watch!i do think the road is the problem as the smell should at least draw the foxes over? thanks xx i am looking for you zak x pls come home x

Just seen your post re a trap. Yes. Man it 24/7 which is virtually what you are doing anyway. Need to check who owns the land as you need their permission. If you happen to catch aany wildlife you need to let them out immediatley, hence why you have to man the trap PLUS you don't want Zak going in and being scared or someone else letting him out! There are traps around, but speak to Auntie Steph as she'll need to see if one is in this area etc. and give you more info on what to to. Smelly sardines are excellent for the trap. Try leaving smelly sardines now nearby the water source, every day/night. Same place, same time (hidden from public) probably early morning may be best, or evening. If Zak knows, he may come back every day (as he may for the water anyway), then you move the sardines into a trap same area. Speak to Aunit Steph for the low down on trapping. x
DogLostKimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders
Uh huh! Sounds right; a good water source. I would call his name, but you don't want to spook him, so do it quietly & gently. If its in the middle of the night, I would say not to, as he may not realise that its his name being called - all he may hear is a human shouting and bolt. He's been wild for a bit, so may need to adjust to that again. But, you never know. If you call quietly and if he's in hearing distance, he may able to process this after a while and turn up. I think you need to play it by ear. If its pitch black and dead quiet, don't yell! Wait and watch. If you do see him, try calling very quietly and watch his reaction, if he goes to run stop. If he still listens, call again still quietly. Wait for him to come to you. And don't run or jump on him, till he jumps on you! This seems to be his area now, so you will get him. You are almost there. x
zakisawhippet
Dan is out there tonight bbq ing again, we discovered a water fountain today where the last sighting of zak was, he well may be using it to get his water! Dan weed all around it! the wood warden was really nice and said we can sleep in the woods in the car on wed and thurs night as he
is working then! but once your in you cant get out until 7.30am! hope fully we will see him then if Dan doesnt tonight? Dan is going to cook the sausages at the entrance further down this time and hide in the car until about 1am! does anybody know whether or not we should be calling his name when we are searching for him? i didnt know whether this would attract him or scare him off? thanks for your support guys xx missing you zak!
Scrappy2010
Zac is such a beautiful boy. My heart is breaking for his Mum. Please dont give up on him, he needs you more than ever now and you are doing a wonderful job searching/looking for him. Will share again and again until you have him home. x
zakisawhippet
just got back fom work kids still at childcare and the house isnt the same without zak to greet me! i hope he does not recluse further out of peoples sight as he seems to be really scared of people, even though he has never had a bad experience with a person! just want to see him for myself! would a manned dog trap be good at this stage if placed in the woods? come home zak!
DogLostAunt Stef - Area Volunteer, West London
Bumped due to sighting.
Berties Family
posted on my facebook again with new sightings
zakisawhippet
Ok so another sighting in highgate woods again but deeper in by the fountain
? Can't think where that is? The young boy said as soon as Zak saw him he ran off! How are we going to catch him? Dan is going to phone wood wardens and see if we can bring the car into the woods for the night as you are not allowed to camp in these woods! will let you know feel so up and down xx
carolinewhippet
We're off out at 9am and will hunt again on the parkland walk/woods area, Jules. Try not too worry too much while you're at work. I'm sure all Zak is thinking is about finding food and then a warm spot to rest and if anything, knowing he has a family who love him very much will keep him going. Would happily join a whippet search party for a group search if that's something you decide - I know a few other local owners I could ask. C xx
zakisawhippet
Thank you so much you all are so kind, the weather is good today so it might get people out including Zak. In work the whole day booked up with patients so can't leave early but husband going to camp out again tonight, weather set to change this week so I heard, really worried but as dan said worrying is non productive, I have two lovely friends with whippets and now a new one who have all been looking for me I cant say how grateful I am! Berries family you are so kind I will keep updating and if we get even more sightings your help would be greatly appreciated I too would do the same for others, people have been so kind it restores my faith! Thank you for all your support xx
Berties Family
Hi, if you can arrange a search, try contacting other whippet owners on a forum called 'the whippet forum' - one thing about whippets is they know their own breed and even the most nervous ones will go to say hello - if you can arrange a search i would come too with some of my dogs.......we are in Milton Keynes
whipmum
Hi Zacs mum, I know exactly how you feel !, we would not deserve to have them if we did not feel this way, I constantly look for my girl Dana even if I know she could not be in this area!----what with the weather changing and all In do worry for them, yes, the thought of them thinking we have forgot them is hard to bear. Im typing this with tears rolling down my face,---on the positive side though (if there is one) at least we are there everyday and will not give up the cause, in fact just of out now to search for Dana, so keep your chin up for Zac and the kids, we will get them home where they belong-----HEATHER X
zakisawhippet
sometimes i wonder whether he thinks that we left him? he must be so confused, my husband keeps on telling me not to be negative, but i cant bear the thought of him dying out there in the cold thinking that we abandoned him! i just want him back so bad its taking over every waking hour and my kids are suffering as we spend every day looking for zak and not much time for them! xx
zakisawhippet
so spent the afternoon at the woods but it was raining so there was not alot of people about! Zak hates the rain as do most whippets so couldnt see him being out in it either? so there were no sightings today after a weekend full. A pretty big come down, waited in car at 515pm -9pm saw nothing think once the wood gate is locked there is nothing for him? he has always been seen when the gate is open! i met a lady called caroline and her family inc rufus the whippet, who have also been looking for zak ! As they are local! so kind means alot! just wish i could see him myself
the nights are getting cold and keep thinking about him on his own ! so many places he could be! keep safe zak we will bring you home soon! i promise!

Perseverence pays off. You will get him. x
zakisawhippet
he does seem to be coming out during the nice two days we have had!more sightings in the past two sunny days than we had in 3 weeks x
DogLostAunt Stef - Area Volunteer, West London
zakisawhippet, such a shame Zak didn't come by last night for you. With all our calls, texts & pics of your location,I really thought he might just show up but saying that it did seem quite busy as Dan said.As I said last night, keep strong,it can be frustrating as you can be sitting in one spot & the dog pops up somewhere else. Good idea to be on site so to speak, today, if possible, for quick reaction to any sighting. All fingers crossed that you get a sighting of your boy today. Dan going to sleep again tomorrow night! cant believe it so gutted! therevhave been fourv sightings in this area so really feel the need to watch out there! thanks for your support!

Remember that dogs like Zak, will be more active early morning and late evening when when most of the world is inside. Also, remember he has been living wild for a bit so you don't want to spook him, gently does it, no chasing, let him come to you. If he doesn't recognise you immediately, that's normal. Give him time to process and he'll come back or come over. Have those smelly sardines out, or the BBQ smells. When he thinks its safe, he'll be out there. Praying for you all. xLast edited: 2011-09-03 21:53:23 by Kimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders

Hello, Caroline here. We had a good hunt for Zac again this morning in Ali Pali and just now on the Parkland Walk/Highgate Woods but no luck. Great news about the sighting near Onslow Gardens though - we will look again tomorrow when we walk our whippet, but loads of luck for tonight. We're in Muswell Hill, so if you get any more sightings around here and need someone to get there fast, just text and me or my husband will head to the spot.
zakisawhippet
ok so we are going to sleep in car tonight with kids seats go back!
we will do shifts and hopefully get a glimpse of him tonight or early morning! wish us look will update in the morning! fingers crossed for a sighting

Good luck for you and Dan tonight - will be thinking of you and saying many prayers.... It will happen, you WILL get him back, just needs perseverance and calm. x

Just Had another sighting of zak at onslow gardens muswell hill road at 7am by at man at the bus stop! he didnt see posters until 315pm so only just found out! we are going to sit it out tonight! the strange thing is he let him stroke him! only just and he was still quite unsure! just wish the man knew before, that he was missing and he could of grabbed him!
so close just need that sighting my self so desperate
caroline thank you for looking its greatly appreciated! whipmum i chk your post every day to chk on your Dana i too feel your pain i know what your going through! maybe i am getting more sightings as i am in urban london which is full of people all the time! i pray for both of us! A lady i met yesterday at the woods told me she lost her whippet about five years ago! he was missing for 6weeks with only two sightings and he got so tired in the end he ended up walking into a pub and was returned home 3 miles away! so dont give up hope! xx
whipmum
Hi Zacs mum, I too have lost my girl Dana, shes been gone for nearly 3 weekss, its so worrying, been out looking every day, and wont stop til In find her, weve had sightings but none when I go and act on them, we both (me and you) will not lose hope for our furbabies, we will get them back no matter how long it takes it just needs one person to see the poster and the dog and act on it, some days though I do admit I feel I will never get my Girl back, but i solder on, no news is good news, at least you are getting nearer to Zac, just hope I will see Dana soon also, cant type this without the tears running, so will stop and carry on the search, take care we have Whippet babies out there and we need them home ! x x

So awful to hear how stressful this is for you especially being pregnant. Wish I lived closer so I could help with the search. Hoping and praying your Zac is back home with you soon. Take care xx

zakisawhippet , as per phone call just now,I'm glad Zak has returned to his usual area. Again it's a matter of watching & waiting in one spot on his route, keeping hidden if possible.
zakisawhippet
so just got back from highgate woods lady couldnt get him, he wouldnt even come near her even with food! we walked all around the woods and queens wood but saw nothing? so frustrating! he seems to be coming out in the day now? hopefully get more sightings! dont know how we are going to catch him?
fionap58
You poor thing Zaks mum, you sound so distressed. At least you know where he is and must have been given lots of advice but just to summarise....if he's seen by a searcher get them to squat down, don't make eye contact, put some food down slowly away from you and wait with a hand with food in also held out on the ground, and make soothing noises, whimper or hum lowly but don't move or make a lunge. Much better to risk him taking the food and moving away but gaining some trust than lunge, miss and scare him off. I know this because I've tried both and the lunging doesn't work but the softly softly approach does. Wishing you all the very best and don't worry too much, the weather is warm, lots of people are looking for him and if plenty of food is left out he won't starve. Might be an idea to leave a bucket of water somewhere close by too if the weather stays hot?Last edited: 2011-09-02 19:57:28 by fionap58

While I know this must be extremely distressing for you and thank god I have not experienced to your level of what you are going through please for yours and your babys sake try to stay calm. Your efforts will pay off you will get him home as so many of us on this site even though we all do not always post on each dog that is missing we do all pray for each and every one of them to get home safely.

Good Luck to you and Stay Safe Zak you will soon be home darling
CP
Am so relieved he's returned to his triangle. Am saying prayers and sending lots of positive thoughts that this episode will be successful. I read regularly on the thread that slowly, calmly and getting down low and whimpering with no eye contact is the procedure. I'm sure someone will soon confirm and elucidate. Good luck to Dan and take care of yourself.
zakisawhippet
ok so just had a phone call he is back in his triangle yes in highgate woods a lady is trying to coax him with some crispsDan on his way! is he making more of an appearence because he is hungry? pls does any one have any answers? or advice? driving my self mad!
zakisawhippet
Hi Aunt steph i am in such a state- we had a sighting from a very reliable source that he was in Alexandra palace, two of the dog walkers tried to gently coax him but he got scared and bolted towards more residential area and roads,he is now out of the triangle he was in! the man said he was in a very bad way- he was so skinny and emaciated with a bite of some sort to his face! i cant even write this without crying i am so distressed! i walked and walked put up more posters, went down every possible route that i could fit through bearing in mind that i am 6 months pregnant, it is so hot today no cloud who knows where he is heading now? Dan coming now to post other areas where i cant cover on foot! i know its had to tell but is it possible that he would turn around and head back towards the areas he is being seen or will he just keep heading off? i dont want him to reach a point where there are no posters!
he must be so scared and confused i dont know what to do with my self?
thanks

zakisawhippet I have emailed you with more detail but for now it is generally better to stand back, hide if possible & watch. The foxes will come ,yes, but Zak might as well. I would definitely take Zak's bed with you when you camp Dan but lay it a little away from your tent but somewhere that you can see it. You need to be able to quietly watch the area, preferably unseen. Last edited: 2011-09-02 01:12:09 by Aunt Stef - Area Volunteer, West London
zakisawhippet
Hi Aunty Steph if your reading this could you pls let Dan know whether or not he should be hiding while the sausages are cooking? He went tonight to bbq but only attracted a load of foxes! when he got back we thought maybe zak would of been keeping his distance because he could see Dan? what do you think?
also when he camps out on sat is it best to keep really still? should he take his bed(zak) and leave it outside the tent?
thanks xx
CP
I am on the edge of my seat here, willing this little darling's return. You're both working so tremendously hard -fantastic effort. I'm sure if all the concerned wishes on this thread could bring her home, she'd be by your side right now. Carry on doing what you're doing - you WILL get her back.
zakisawhippet
just got off the phone to the man who saw him on the sunday at the entrance to the woods, he said he knows dogs and it was our dog for sure not a lurcher! so looks like we might be back on track! fingers crossed come home zak the nights are getting cold! x
zakisawhippet
so spoke to the girls who may have saw him outside banners! they said that it was defo our whippet they saw and not a lurcher? who knows? have to keep with it! Dan gone out to bbq some sausages and spray more urine!
zakisawhippet
it does surprise me that zak would head into a busy town as when he has been spotted he has been sneaking about and avoiding people in the woods? who knows!
zakisawhippet
ok so Dan went out last night to put food down at our base and then walked around the woods and parkland walk area for about one and half hours!
he didnt see any thing!Last night i got a call from a lady to say that there is a big issue vender outside victoria train station- exit by a hotel who had a whippet with him that looked like zak? just lying on the pavement, so went down on tube with kids this morning to chk it out but saw no whippet and didnt want to probe in case it scared the man off!
so today had a sighting of grey and white dog outside banners just past our pet shop, we phoned the pet shop and they told us that they had not seen the dog but it sounds like Nala a grey and white scraggy lurcher?? who's owners let her stray around the shops sometimes?? they didnt have the owners number but said that they would give them ours next time they were in the shop! i hope its not there dog thats being spotted- need to find out if they let it out long enough for it to be hanging around in the woods! although the man who spotted him on sunday was very certain that it was our dog? who knows what to think now? my head is a mess! think i need to go back to victoria! x

Will bump Zak due to sighting. Great news, thanks for your text. This is such a waiting & patience game. If you can sit vigil, preferably ,if you have enough people, each at a differnet sighting spot & sit watching for as long as you can, this could give you the sighting you need yourselves & possibly get closer to bringing Zak home. I will call you tomorrow .
zakisawhippet
Had another sighting of zak this evening at 830pm on park land walk near holmes dale road not far at all from the sighting on the 15th!The description was that a couple were walking there dog (who did happen to know zak was missing any way, and have spoken to my husband before) and they saw something white and grey run across the path really fast! but it was getting dark and it was moving quite fast so couldnt get a proper look! I went to the place where he was spotted on the sunday- after work this evening and waited for an hour, had a look around queens wood! but saw nothing! Dan put more posters along the area we think he is using! think Dan and some friends are going to camp somewhere he has been spotted on sat night!
so close yet so far! my emotions are so up and down! thank you for your support! the nights are getting colder and i do worry all the time about him!
Berties Family
really feel for you and if I was more local would certainly help - my friend is a dog walker and I have sent messages to him. Whippets are really resilient too - mine love the snow....their speed helps with getting food. My boy Louis is similar to Zak. Come on Zak, home time now xxxx

You are doing well. You will get him. Dogs are extremely clever at surviving in the wild. Their natural instincts kick in and they can be very good at hiding too! Your posters will keep helping and make him too hot to handle if someone has him. But, remember that Dog Wardens don't work weekends or holidays so if someone has taken him in, i.e that lady, they can't give him to the dog warden until tomorrow (Tuesday). Hang in there. Zak your mummy's coming for you sweetheart. xLast edited: 2011-08-29 22:10:45 by Kimmybear - Area Co-ordinator, Essex & Hertfordshire borders

went to the spot he was seen and beyond, put up more posters spoke to wood wardens, even more dog walkers, sprayed urine, a couple said they saw a whippet matching zak description by the swing in queens wood with a lady and another dog, maybe she picked him up? husband ran to try and catch up with her just to rule it out (long shot i know) but couldnt quite find her!could not sit it out tonight have no car at moment and had to get kids back! Dan took day off work tomorrow so going to saturate with more posters and find a base for food, today was very stressful, walking around the streets with no car and two little children! phew, every where he was seen have been by entrances to park land walk area where he first went missing!keep thinking of him cold and lost and scared, just want him home! fingers cossed for more sightings!
thanks everyone x

Owners, you really can get Zak home. You are almost there. Really! Gently does it. You can sit with smelly sardines and whine or squeak, as well. Dogs are curious and will come over eventually. Even lay out there all night by your smelly food if need be. Do what Auntie Steph says, and you really will have your boy home soon. Come on Zakky baby, home now. x

Thanks Daniel, this latest link worked for me. Good to talk. Great to have a sighting of Zak.As discussed, go armed with scent, smelly food & familiar articles. If Zak appears at his usual time, this would be so good, call quietly & gently approach without too much eye contact, preferably holding a smelly sausage or similar, retreat if Zak starts to move away from you.Sounds bonkers but I promise you this can work.Good luck,I so hope this little guy shows himself tonight. As I've just suggested to Dana's owner, can you phone a local radio station so you can appeal to a wider audience? Even if its done under the guise of requesting they play a tune to lift your spirits, you might get the opportunity to slip in the fact that you lost your dog 2 weeks ago and you are desparate to have him back. Even the bigger national radio stations have people calling in to request tunes. Its got to be worth a try.Last edited: 2011-08-27 11:38:24 by Whippetlover

Zak was last spotted at one of the roads right at the other end of park land walk near north wood road N6, i have left his blanket and sprayed our urine there, also am feeding him every morning! i will put up more signs around the fair! thank you so much for looking it is most kind and much appreciated! i would like to think if he managed as far as the park he will be seen! also he knows his way home from there but who knows if his mind is thinking straight?
thanks once again! miss you zak

I went half way along Parkland walk a few hours ago. Couldn't go to the end as it started to pour down with rain. There is a fun fair at the seven sisters road entrance. I gave details to the men at the entrance and they wrote down my phone number incase Zac was spotted. It is possible that hunger might attract Zac to the fair ground. It might be an idea to give the men a poster and to put posters up in the park particularly at all the entrances. There are several exist paths along the walk which lead into surrounding streets. Its possible he took one of them.

Had a spam email off gumtree! claiming to have handed zak in six days ago in broken english, to a bus diver delivering pets? left me these numbers 07023085598? husband said he checked online and they are premium numbers?
left an email with link she sent, but no reply i dont know what to think?

Hope the call wasn't too bad, just remember that if you're getting hoaxes then the poster is working... it's being seen and even though some people can be idiots and make these calls, it takes just one poster in the right place to find the person who has seen Zak. Stay strong x

Thank you lilysky & Berties Family for posting up your experiences with your lost Whippets. This helps owners so much. X
Berties Family
hi our boy was found running down a street about 1 mile from where he got out early the following day. Whippets tend to run until they tire and then rest so try to poster 1 to 2 miles from where he was lost, also reading this sites stories never give up hope, not only can you find the support of people who know how you are feeling, you can also offer support to those who also have lost dogs. Also keep updating the site - we learnt that people look on here but do not post so if they see a dog near to them they will look out for it - as we do reguarly, have also put on my facebook pageLast edited: 2011-08-23 08:49:09 by Berties Family
lilysky
she was attacked by 3 dogs, fortunately i had a news paper that morning and was able to beat them off, so she could get away, thought she would go home but just kept running, there were no sightings of her in the 5 days she was injured so she must have been hiding and came out when she was ready, someone did say to me whippets do that. i hope you get that long awaited phone call very soon. sharon

Have spoken to Zak's owner. Zak flew off after a rabbit in a nearby Nature Reserve,Parkland Walk on Monday(15th). There have been a few potential sightings in Highgate but nothing for a few days now. It could be that Zak is lying low during the day & coming out when it gets dark. Owner is going to heavily poster & post flyers in the surrounding area so that we can get some sightings to guide everyone to where Zak might be hiding.

Sorry to see that ZAK SIGHTED is missing.
  • If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
  • Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
  • A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (31996)
  • Obtain a missing poster by clicking on View poster above. Posters are very important so start postering now!
  • You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
  • Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
  • If your dog has been stolen inform the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number (CRN). Send an email to stolen@doglost.co.uk.
  • If your dog is picked up and taken to rescue kennels, it can be legally re-homed after seven days. Visit rescue centres in person and do not rely on checking by phone alone. Other people may not recognise your dog by your description, so give them a DogLost poster.
  • Keep us updated by keeping your dog's page up to date and check for posts from helpers who may have suggestions and possible matches or sightings
  • DogLost is free and anyone asking for money to find or return your dog is not volunteering for us. If you are concerned about an approach you have received, please email admin@doglost.co.uk
