It was so nice to receive a message from Ruby and pleased to hear that she enjoyed her tea before catching up on her beauty sleep (not that she needs it!), not to mention her late walk before bedtime. Lucky girl to have found herself a lovely new home and family.
Sheila
Very much appreciate kind wishes. Walked Ruby this afternoon as have to take the posters down again and get some of her energy out of her. She was grand. Ruby has asked me to let you know she's had her tea and is taking a doze just now before the late night walk she so much looks forward to. If anyone else would like to meet her, give me a ring and we'll fix

How wonderful that Ruby is home, well done everyone your hard work and late nights paid off - perhaps Ruby needs to be walked on a harness to avoid this happening again, stay safe now Ruby and enjoy your lovely new home xx
Millys Mum
I'm so pleased to hear that this very clever girl followed her nose and made her own way home. I'm so pleased for her family and others who did so much to get Ruby home. What a lovely-looking girl. Welcome home Ruby!!!

That's made my day!!!!
Brilliant news!! Good girl Ruby and well done everyone!!
And she did make it home before my car's fixed LOL!
Sheila
Totally overwhelmed. Managed to contain Ruby in our garden when she followed the food trail in the early hours. She's fit and healthy. She willingly had her collar put back on and came inside to sleep. Can't thank you enough for your wonderful support. Liz - will call you later.
Pet Pawz
I was so pleased to get a text this morning saying Ruby had been caught and was safe at home. Well done to everyone involved and welcome home Ruby.
Sheila
Thanks all. Just one call today saying Ruby seen running down Leasowes Lane within the golf course about 7.15pm. Can't be certain, of course, so continuing to lay food down and cross fingers!
Unknown
I will have another look around later on, hopefully she has not moved on, don't worry things can go quiet sometimes.
Sheila
Sadly no. Some food taken by front gate but rest untouched. No more sightings - it's very quiet. Will wait by phone for a bit. May try Kent Road steps/Leasowes Lane early afternoon, and will try laying food trail again as it's drier today. Re scenting - will it be best to try close to home as that's where we've had the repeated sightings?
Pet Pawz
Did you have any luck last night Sheila?
Sheila
Angus - Local dog warden service useless. Currently suspended - look up Dudley Dog Warden. Sandwell & Walsall suspended too. I've spoken with the Head of the Dudley "service" and spoken with their contractor and will deal direct if I have to, but am strongly considering a formal complaint to my local councillor. Would be interested in views from other people, pse, as am mega annoyed.
Sheila
Many thanks - no one seems to be around today. No sign around Howley Grange. Put up more posters in Manor Lane, Priory Rd/Hiplands Rd areas but saw nothing on the way. Have got an alarm working if anything visits tonight for food - boiled it down to the early hours of the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for us XXX
DogLostAngus
Does your local dog warden have a trap that you can set up once she is used to coming to the crate for food -this would be an easy swap to make and one that would not involve her having to approach humans if she is nervous
Unknown
Just been to the park went to the small pond and walked down to the large one spoke to a couple but no-one else about drove around but did not see her. Think she is keeping out of the rain. Please post if you have any more calls. Liz
Sheila
Thanks Liz. Have been waiting for any reports as they tend to come mornings. No sightings reported today but local man has just rung with a definite sighting last night on park side of Manor Lane by Priory Road at 9.30pm. Said she ran up Priory Road. 2 other men gave us a similar sighting in the same place at 5.30pm last night but we had a language difficulty pinning it precisely. We're therefore going to walk our usual late night walks around Lapal this afternoon and put some more posters up. Sounds like she is in the park in the daytime if you have any time to try the upper duck pools - would be grateful. Mobile on, of course.
Unknown
Hi Sheila just wondered whether you were going over to park today as I am free (just had to catch up on housework) now. Liz xx
Sheila
There are 2 paths from Kent Road into Leasowes. One runs down the side of Leasowes College close to Halesowen Road/top of Mucklow Hill - it was at the bottom of this path at the top of the hill that Ruby ran off - the first time we had taken her there. The other path is the one I described below and is the one Ruby knows best. The 2 paths are connected if you walk on from the top of the steps instead of going down them. We'd intended to go down one and back up the other in the snow for safety.
Sheila
Thanks all - comments really helpful. Understand about scent trail - will wait as we're pretty sure she is coming back round here anyway at dawn and dusk. Didn't realise about crouching - have only seen her once myself and did the inevitable calling, obviously wrong!
No sightings this morning - unusual but very quiet - BUT we put Ruby's cage in our back garden last night with a food bowl and a food trail to it from the bowl by our front gate that was emptied the previous night we're pretty sure by Ruby. All food gone by 8am. Husband just missed the gobbler because security light at side of house still on when he went out. We need to be sure this is Ruby but it ties up with the time of sightings in our road. Trying to work out how to trap what's eating the food.
Kent Road steps - there's an alley off Kent Road 2 detached houses towards Carters Lane from Highland Ridge. HR too narrow to park in, but can park in Compton Ave opposite. Follow path down alley at back of HR, turns sharp right at top of hill. Steps are on left a couple of hundred yds along. She knows this path, and the path at the bottom of the steps.
Pet Pawz
Is there any news yet? I'm not exactly sure where the steps are but if you go down the gully next to Leasowes school I think the steps may be down that way. I have to go out later so I'll have another look for Ruby. I hope she was okay last night with all the fireworks.
Roz
Oh.....and for when I'm mobile again (although I hope she'll be home before that) how do I find the Kent Road steps, and is there anywhere to park?
Roz
I went to Leasowes park this afternoon. It was good to meet Lizzie and Sarah. I had a good walk round and hung about by the duck pond hoping to catch a glimpse, but there were alot of dogwalkers about (most of whom knew about her being lost) so she probably wouldn't have shown herself. Then very quickly the mist engulfed the valley, and with an ailing car I had to make for home, by which time Ruby could have been making her way back towards home for a BBQ snack there tonight...hopefully. Will be grounded now till car fixed but sending 'Go home Ruby' thoughts.
safneo
I had a drive round the area to earlier. Definately worth doing the scenting, and maybe try the BBQ in the garden Sheila? At least that will be a way of keeping warm in the garden. Nice smelly sausages cooking if she is in the area might just be the extra temptation she needs to get the extra bravery to enter home ground. Fingers crossed!
Rileys Mum
If this girl is nervous then i suspect she will shy away from people shouting her rather than approach them.. have the owners been advised on how to act if they see her? rather than shouting her, crouch low on the ground and wimper.. you may feel totally silly doing this but it does work!
Thanks Nina for advising Scenting.. it is as you said, fill a bottle with your pee and scent the area where she is being seen.. do it in a line which will lead the scent trail back to the house. You can also use contents from your hoover bag or dustpan.. these are all familiar scents that a dog will recognise.
Do you have a shed or garage where you could set her up a warm place to rest with food/ water? she may come closer if she likes her food so much. It will be the nervousness that is keeping her running.. by chasing after her she will only keep on going. Lay down a scent trail, lead it back to familiar grounds.. leave some nice smelly food around for her and gain her trust that way.. remember slowly slowly, catchy monkey ;-) Good luck! Adele x
DogLostNina
Hello Sheila has anyone advised you about scenting. In basic terms I beleive it is collecting and sprinkleing your pee in and area where your missing dog is and trailing it back home, hopefully to your front door. I am sure if the more experienced doglost helpers view this message thay can confirm the proddedure. Good luck.
Sheila
Exhausted! 2 trips round Leasowes today. 2 reported sightings there by Kent Rd steps at 9am. Then Pet Pawz call at 12.15. Spoke further with Blue Cross and eventually Dudley dog warden office who agree with safneo. Spoke with another neighbour who saw her late evening earlier in the week by home but didn't realise she was missing. Reinforces she's returning. Definitely worth a go at a garden trap - husband currently trying to rig one. Happy New Year all - suspect we'll be in the garden!
Pet Pawz
I was looking around Leasowes Park earlier and a nice gentleman walking his dog helped me look for Ruby. He spotted her near the small duck pond (around midday) so we called her but she ran off. I phoned the owners who then came to the park to look for her. She seems to be accessing/leaving the park via the new steps near to the Kent Road entrance.Last edited: 2010-12-31 13:31:03 by Pet Pawz

Hi Andrea hope you are well was wondering about you the other day liz xx

Hi Sheila went upto park today for a couple of hours and spoke to a few people about Ruby then drove around the area as well. I think she is going to the pond early morning and late afternoon. I was wondering whether to do a bbq with nice smelly food to entice her to the pond area and maybe set up a trap. Not sure whether ray dedicott will lend us one. I just dont think we will catch her otherwise as she has so many places to hide.
Not sure whether to put nice smelly food by the pond for her and gain her trust that way as manor lane is so busy to cross. Just trying think of as many ideas as possible at the moment.
safneo
If she is coming to your house Sheila, is there anywhere you can trap her? Back Garden?
Just wondering if you leave a trail of food to garden if you could close gate behind her? I am off out now so will have a hunt around too x
Pet Pawz
I will go out and look for her again this morning, and I'll take plenty of treats. I just hope we can catch her soon.
Sheila
Ruby took food from her dish in our front garden at 6.45am. Definitely seen in our service road by 2 neighbours and then by me at 7.00am on Priory road/Manor Lane junction - she ran across garden and up alley to Hiplands Road - too fast so I didn't see which way she went & I chose the wrong way. No-one else had seen her so came home. Think we are going to have to entice her rather than catch her - any ideas please?Last edited: 2010-12-31 08:27:04 by Sheila

I have shared Ruby's details on facebook and they have been sent to friends in the Halesowen area. I hope she is home safely very soon. Adele x

Went shopping and drove around but did not see her at all
Sheila
Just had report that Ruby seen outside Manor Vets Kent Rd at 7pm heading up road, so going to look. Please do leaflet pub - are told they own and like dogs - but she's only 400yds away!!!!
Unknown
Hi Sheila wondered about a leaflet in the cobham pub. I am going to the shops now so will have a drive past and I will be out in the morning armed with cheese or something nice and smelly.
Sheila
Have just registered after meeting Liz at lunchtime - many thanks. We own Ruby. No more news today. We have put food out in front garden - know she ran up past the house on other side of road this morning - and are keeping curtains open for now so she can see in if she's around. Intending to go out later because bin bags will be out. She seems to be active early morning and late evenings from sightingsLast edited: 2010-12-30 18:08:44 by Sheila

Went out earlier and met owners she had been seen earlier in the golf course end of manor lane at around 9.00pm, and was seen last night about 4.00pm. Wille be going out again in the morning. She does tend to cover the general area and has been seen in Howley Grange Road. It will be hard to catch her as although she will take food from you she then turns and runs off. I will tske smellier food tomorrow. I have spoken to owners about various things. Blue cross have also been out.
Pet Pawz
I have been out looking for the past couple of hours but no luck I'm afraid. I have been in Long Lane, Kent Road, Carters Lane, Mucklow Hill, Manor Way and Leasowes Park. There are a lot of posters around the park and I stopped everyone and asked them to keep an eye out for Ruby. I really hope she is found soon.

Further info:
Ruby is a 4 years old, short haired, black/tan/grey speyed and microchipped girl - good looking, distinctly Alsatian from the neck to tail tip with a Rottie's head and smiley face. She's medium size, gentle and kind, very powerful and energetic when out and about - a rescue dog who has been in kennels for months before joining us recently. She's extremely nervous around people, so doesn't come when called but responds to her name. She slipped her collar when she entangled herself on her lead in railings and panicked at the Kent Road/Leasowes College path entrance to Leasowes Park around 3pm on Christmas Day. Christmas had truly come for her as she ran back and forth across the Mucklow Hill side of the golf course greeting other dogs and having a marvellous time running free. She didn't want to stop and it went dark. We came close to catching her several times, but she was too excited and shied away - and doesn't have a collar on to grab. We have reported sightings in the same area of the park in the early morning of Mon 27 Dec, and a possible sighting the same evening in the Carters Lane area, close to our house, where a dog seen was still running fast and not wanting to be cornered. If you find or see her, please try to contain her - she will try to run past you or may back herself into a corner. Food may be the best approach. She loves it, will be hungry and especially likes meaty treats. Please phone or text us on 0121 421 6605, 07507596757 or 07885297629, or contact the Blue Cross Bromsgrove on Facebook with any information at all.
