The very same thing happened to a Greyhound in York police kennels too very sad.

Marbie the story about the stray that died in police kennels is correct, I think it was Scotland though. It was a greyhound and ended up in their kennels but no one passed it over and the dog starved to death. They think because it was a greyhound, a very quiet breed, it didn't bark and they only noticed when it began decomposing. Every one there was devastated and it was big news so hope things have tightened up

Police (Police Officers or staff) haven't had responsibility for stray dogs since April 2008, when local authorities took over.

Marbie - Police kennels are run by civilian staff. I very much doubt the "story" as told by a decent "paper" but if you can find said article then please do link it here and I'll do some rummaging to discover the facts. Some newspapers aren't renowned for reporting actual facts.
Marbie
Hollieberry don't quote me on this as it may not be a 100% accurate but a couple of years ago it was in the paper saying that as the police were responsible for holding stray dogs and they had 'forgotten' they had one in the kennels and the poor soul died ( horrendous) it had been arranged that they would be taken to the Merseyside dogs home. It may or may not have been due to the Manchester dogs home fire but you'd think they would be sending them a bit nearer now wouldn't you?
