On Facebooks The Lost Dog Trapping Team Uk search & Rescue Network there has been a dog picked up in the Blakenall area who really looks very similar to Luckie. Chip not registered. Although it says female this may be worth checking.

Tomorrow is a sad day, marked by a tragic event that left a family in utter despair and a little dog with a broken heart. This is Luckie people of the Facebook, this little boy is one one of the toughest most loyal most bravest of our little paw friends. Update from Help Find Lucky FB

Right folks unfortunately we are not able to give you all the answers we so desperately require. The post mortem report and DNA test results have been sent to Christine Kipling. We can say that Zac was likely killed in a road traffic accident or severe trauma which caused significant damage to his body and internal organs for him to loose significant blood from the head and bottom. His body was then scavenged which resulted in the head and tail becoming removed. The DNA samples that were taken did not meet minimum requirements to determine the breed of dog unfortunately so we are still no further forward with our investigation. The search team have drawn up some further questions to be presented to the pathologist as soon as possible in the hope that we can pick out one tiny detail that would allow us to rule Zac out. In the meantime we have allowed samples to be stored for further tests and we will be perusing this investigation further until we have a definite answer. A disappointing result but also a hopeful one. The search for Luckie will continue as planned until every hiding place has been checked and checked again. We must not forget he has a family out there, they wait and watch for him every day. Lets take a moment to regroup and gain strength and then we can focus on the way forward. Zac will be coming home, he will be cremated and his ashes will be released at an appropriate place. We will of course let you all know where and when and you will of course all be invited. Thank you all for your continued support. STAY SAFE BRAVE LUCKIE WE ARE NOT GIVING UP x

Interesting letter, shiws how the legal department do not seem to know how to catch a dog. However this is legal posturing, a court would look at what may be considered reasonable...and it is arguable that leaving owners to put their dogs in the kennels with no supervision is not reasonable...there will always be two stories here. I hope wherever Luckie us he is happy, lived and well fed and one day his family will know. Some ferry companies allow pets to travel in the owners cabin....seems a much ether idea to me.

Bit unfair to paint DFDS as the bad guys in this. Unless you were there, you don't know the truth (somewhere between their and the owners' account probably). Anyway, a monetary payment isn't going to bring Lucky back, is it? Much as I feel for the owners, I think they will not get DFDS to admit to any negligence. If the owners feel they have a strong case, take them to court. Obviously, my hope is that Lucky was taken in by someone, who is lying low. Sadly, I feel we will never know.

As a sign of goodwill and support, we additionally paid for one overnight hotel stay for you and your family when visiting the local area, and we funded a print run and local distribution of 2,500 leaflets in the search for “Lucky”.

In conclusion, it appears that “Lucky” managed to escape the kennel area simply because the cage and kennel doors were not properly shut, and accordingly we do not agree that any degree of negligence can be ascribed to DFDS in connection with this most unfortunate incident.

We also do not believe that DFDS staff promised you that we would bring back “Lucky”, but that we most certainly would try to do so, within reasonable means. Inherently, retrieving a loose dog is most difficult, short of saying often impossible.

Whilst we understand that the loss of “Lucky” is truly a sad loss to you and your family, we consider that DFDS (and others) have rendered all reasonable assistance in the attempt to find and bring back “Lucky”, and for these reasons we politely decline your request for monetary compensation because we do not agree that we have acted negligently in respect of “Lucky’s” disappearance.

Well this shows how much DFDS (who made an 8% profit last year) really cares for our sweet boy...

Dear Mrs. XXX

We refer to our previous correspondence, including your request for monetary compensation from DFDS, for the loss of “Lucky”.

Having reviewed this unfortunate incident and the facts as known to us, we regretfully cannot accommodate your request for compensation towards the loss of “Lucky”.

What we can ascertain:

· As you will recall, to access the kennel area through its main (heavy) door, you had to scan your access card (“pet ticket”). This door can only be left open, as a result of not being properly shut. Passengers are responsible for placing their dog in the cage and ensuring the door is secure, unsupervised. Similarly in this case, where you placed “Lucky” in the cage supplying him with water, food etc.

· You have suggested that the door was wedged open, but the vessel’s crew states this was not the case, and moreover the door log suggests otherwise, showing the door lock swiped open with an access card alone, at 15.05 hrs, 16.11 hrs and at 16.12 hrs (the latter two, being around the time “Lucky” went missing)

· After the incident, the kennel and its door remain undamaged, showing no signs of a dog (“Lucky”) attempting any forceful escape, e.g. by clawing at the door.

· When alerted to the fact that a dog, “Lucky”, was loose in the area, the vessel’s crew, and subsequently, Port of Tyne staff, rendered all due assistance, attempting to locate and secure him, when he ran off the ship onto the quayside.

· At 16.20 hrs, the vessel’s crew made a first announcement in English, German and Dutch, for all dog owners to report to the Guest Service Centre, so that we could identify the owner of the loose dog, “Lucky”. A second announcement was made at 16.30 hrs and another at 16.40 hrs.

· At 16.54 hrs, the ship sailed. Port of Tyne staff were still searching for the dog (“Lucky”) at this time, and as yet, you had not yet been identified as “Lucky”s owners.

· At 17.05 hrs, you reported to the Guest Service Centre and were informed that your dog (“Lucky”) was missing. The team on board arranged for a Polish member of staff to speak to you, explain what had happened and to advise you that staff were still out searching for “Lucky” - as members of our operational team and our sales managers, were out searching the port and the local area until late in the evening.

· Our Customer Service team also called the local RSPCA, animal shelters and local dog wardens, as well as the police, to report “Lucky” missing that evening, and we then followed-up with them again on 28 December. They were in possession of the dog’s microchip number, along with a contact number for our office.

· We believe that the on-board team kept you informed of the situation, on a regular basis until disembarkation in Ijmuiden on 22 December.

· On your return to the UK, via our Newcastle service on 5-6 January 2017, we provided you, ex gratia, with a cabin upgrade and meals on board. You were then met by Steve Garner, our Contact Centre Manager, and a Polish-speaking member of our contact centre team, informing you of the status of our searches.

Have just read Mungo's page as he's been reunited. His owners had big banners made and put them up at roundabouts etc. The woman who bought him saw the banner! I think this is a great idea and could maybe be put up for Lucky at ferry terminal,roundabouts and main roads in area. Obviously need to see the outcome tomorrow first. Hope it's not bad news. Would it be worth asking DFDS to put posters up in Holland just in case Lucky was taken out of the country and it might draw attention to travellers across the other side of the water

"Thank you once again to all of Luckies faithful supporters for turning out in horrendous weather again today. We have pretty much finger tip searched all local areas now so over the next few weeks we will be moving our search areas further afield. We also now have to consider the possibility that Luckie has been found and rehomed without being reported as found. We will therefore be making an appeal for his safe return no questions asked in return for a SUBSTANTIAL REWARD. True Elma,but positive steps forward today...Latest....Extremely good news today for our Help Find Luckie supporters. A thermal imaging camera is on its way for our search team to pick up next week, courtesy of DFDS which is absolutely fantastic of them to help. We also have further good news in that a thorough search of the port area, jetty, and neighbouring terminals has also been carried out today, by staff at Port of Tyne, which was also requested by our contact at DFDS. We now have CCTV cameras being monitored daily and any sightings will be reported to the search team immediately. We have also had the good news that DFDS are able to help financially with the distribution of flyers door to door through their own contacts. We have moved mountains today and we are very happy that we are now in a position to ask for help and receive it. So a big thank you to all staff at Port of Tyne and DFDS, lets pray our united team can bring our brave boy home x

Here is the latest update from Luckie's team.

Just to bring everyone up to date with where we are with the search for Luckie

Our team is made up of volunteers from varied professional backgrounds, many of whom have worked for organisations such as Dogs Lost and Animal Search UK previously.

We have expert behaviourists, dog trackers and dog trappers on the team, along with a number of experienced volunteers that are providing a fingertip search of areas around the Port of Tyne working outwards by a 5 mile radius systematically.

We also have an experienced team of volunteers that are providing a 24 hour surveillance on areas where we have had ‘reported’ sightings.

We have a number of feeding stations being monitored with night vision cameras, but sadly so far we have not been able to capture an image of Luckie.

The feeding stations have been concentrated in areas where we have had ‘reported’ sightings and have been there for around 3 weeks.

This weekend we will extend those feeding stations and cameras into a new search area based on a recent ‘reported’ sighting last Sunday.

We have the use of a hired Thermal Imaging camera if and when we are able to capture evidence on camera that Luckie is in the area. As you can appreciate a thermal imaging camera is only useful if we have a concentrated area to search. At this moment in time, we have no concrete evidence that Luckie is ‘bedding down’ in any one particular area, making the use of such equipment difficult.

‘Reported’ sightings are being investigated both via searches, camera, and door to door investigations.

We also have a team of ‘leafleters’ that are delivering flyers door to door and postering areas where appropriate. The ‘Leafleters’ are working in areas around the Port of Tyne and moving outwards by a 5 mile radius and will continue to do so for the duration of the search.

Searches have been organised to meet at the Port of Tyne at 10am both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. If anyone can spare a couple of hours then please join us. The search team have had conversations with Animal search uk, and have examined the packages that they have on offer. Unfortunately there is nothing offered within those packages that isn’t or hasn’t already been explored. Therefore there is no added value to bringing in a second search team.

We are however very willing to work with, or alongside anyone that feels they have anything new to add, or explore that hasn’t already been tried. Any such suggestions should be directed to Christine Kipling using the number above.

There have been extensive searches of the Port and Jetty areas, initially with a thermal heat seeking camera and experienced divers. This was carried out within the first few days of Luckie going missing with a further search being done around four weeks later.

The Port and Jetty area are monitored 24 hours with all staff being aware of Luckie, unfortunately he has not returned to this area. We are however arranging to carry out a final search of this area again with heat seeking thermal imaging cameras as soon as can be authorised.

We appreciate that there is a lot of public support for Luckie and this is something that we are very grateful for and hope that people will continue to raise aware

Ruth, I agree with you 100% .The port itself is not vast, but the adjacent areas are acres and acres of brown field sites ( from the ship building and coalmiining era). They are fenced, and need to be thoroughly searched, but no doubt permission would have to be sought.

To me the bottom line regarding Lucky is that appropriate action, including bringing in a professional search team, should have been taken to secure Lucky immediately after he escaped from the ship. He was seen, and filmed, by CCTV desperately searching for his family and those first days were the “golden period” for this to have been achieved.

The following has just been posted on Lucky's Facebook page regarding DFDS's response to the reported sequence of events that DFDS have provided to Alan Campbell, MP.

In response to the lovely letter from Mr Campbell MP for Tynemouth the search team would like to respond with a few alternatives to the reported sequence of events that DFDS have provided to Mr Campbell. Has anyone stopped for a moment to consider how, if the kennel area is secured with electronic key cards, did a terrified dog manage to make it off the ship? Has anyone looked at the interior plan of the ship and the location of the kennels to the entrance of the ship where people board? The secure door to the kennel area was reported to have been WEDGED OPEN because there were not enough key cards to go around, giving Luckie the escape route off the ship. He was in fact CHASED by members of staff, when already terrified.

DFDS did not contact Animal Search UK until put under public pressure as the details of Luckie’s story began to unfold, their email to Animal Search UK came five weeks after Luckie went missing, five weeks too late. Yes they put an add in the lost and found section of a local paper, again due to public pressure and again five weeks too late. Yes they printed posters and leaflets for Luckie but again only after public pressure five weeks too late. It was Luckie’s search team that requested that they do all these things to help.

DFDS had not been in constant contact with the family at all. Christine Kipling has been told by the family that during the early weeks when they returned from that fateful holiday they had little or no contact from DFDS. The lines of contact have recently been established due to public pressure again five weeks too late.

The search team is made up of volunteers who have been out day and night out in all weathers searching for Luckie and following up each and every lead, no one from DFDS has joined them.
The search team were sent CCTV footage of Luckie that we have not released to the public as it is terribly heartbreaking showing the time, date and location of him searching in desperation for his family on the first evening he went missing. THAT IS THE TIME ALL THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BY DFDS NOT FIVE WEEKS TOO LATE. They had access to the same information but chose to do nothing.

The fact of the matter is they promised the children their little boy would be found safe and waiting for them when they returned, AND HE IS NOT. Instead his life hangs in the balance, his life has changed forever, through no fault of his own he is in grave danger and every day that goes by he is at risk. Never forget this face, the face of a terrified little dog, that could have and should have been safe at home with his owners. Ask yourselves one question, what if this was the face of your dog? Of course DFDS are going to write lengthy responses defending their actions, but Luckie remains missing, Luckie made it off a secure ship, HOW x”

"Thank you for your email to me regarding Lucky the dog who escaped from a DFDS ship. I sympathise with the family and the distress these events have caused them and as you are aware I have contacted DFDS to enquire what action they have taken to try and find Lucky.
Michell Ulyatt who is manager at DFDS has briefed me as to how events unfolded on 21st December. She tells me that Luckie's owners were responsible for placing him in the cage within the pet holding area on board. This area has a secure lockable door, which can only be opened with a swipe key. Swipe keys are issued to owners at check in for use during loading and throughout the journey.
DFDS's initial investigation showed that there was no damage to the cage that Lucky was placed into and they are continuing with their investigations as to how he escaped this area. Once Luckie got onto the car deck several members of staff tried to block his path or catch him. Unfortunately as you will be aware from the social media campaign Lucky is shy and nervous and ran off onto the quayside. Whilst DFDS are aware that information has circulated that he was under the jetty for five days afterwards, they have no reports of sightings in the area during that time, even though the Port of Tyne pilot boat searched that area, along with the RNLI, who were called out.
On being alerted to Luckie's escape DFDS immediately reported Lucky as missing to Northumberland police, the RSPCA, the dog warden, and three local animal shelters. Members of staff from DFDS port operations team and their offices searched the quay side and under the jetty, as well as driving around Royal Quays and surrounding areas to look for Luckie.
All staff working within the port and in DFDS Newcastle office are aware of Luckie's status as missing and know that they should report to either the search team whose number given on their posters or to a member of DFDS senior team so that they can follow this up.
With regard to what was happening on board once the ship had sailed. I am advised that DFDS put out several calls over the ship's public address system asking for Luckie's owners to come forward before the ship departed. These announcements were made in English, German and Dutch which are the main languages used by passengers on the service. Unfortunately the family did not make themselves known to staff until after the ship had left. DFDS arranged for a P0lish speaking member of staff on board to relay the message to them and liaise with them during their journey about the progress of the search. On arrival at Ijmuiden, the family was given this staff member's phone number and they continued their journey to Poland for Christmas.
The family returned to the UK on 6 January. Members of DFDS staff, including a Polish-speaker, met the family on the ship to discuss what happened and outline what actions had been taken to find Lucky. They advised the family that they would need to put any request for compensation to us in writing for full investigation.
MS Ulyatt has remained in touch with the family. After being contacted by a local volunteer DFDS arranged 2,500 leaflets to be printed for the volunteer search team to distribute in the local area. MS Ulyatt also arranged for Luck's story to be sent to regional broadcast media and all of the regional newspapers to raise awareness in case someone has taken him in.
Ms Ulyatt has also arranged for adverts to be placed in the Lost and Found pets section of the regional newspapers and on classified online listings, and are about to run a further print of posters for distribution. She has also contacted a professional animal sea

Morning. Just to follow on from comments on posts we just want to bring you all up to date on whats taken place so far. Hopefully this will help reassure people and answer questions. Drones have been used. We have motion triggered cameras in various locations. Family belongings are also in various locations some with cameras The family come down all the time and have searched. Sat quietly throughout the night where paw prints were as well as other locations. We have luckies toys in areas. We have been watching areas throughout the day and night. Sniffer dog has been used. We have mediums on board. Recordings of the family chatting. Have used bitches in season. Had barbecues. Traps will be up this weekend and will be manned at all times. We have spoken to.many trackers and the advice they have given is they wouldnt be able to suggest anymore than we are doing. After time a dogs scent will change drastically so they do not feel at this point they can offer anything else but feel everything that can be done is been done. We cannot give details of where footprints were as we need to keep area as quiet as possible. If luckie is there he may well have become wild n be terrified of humans. We are constantly in touch with other experts about luckie. Can we ask if you are able to help search that you send us a message. We certainly can use help doing fingertip searches of certain areas but need to keep other areas and details private. Also please continue to try get media. Newspapers etc to take on luckies story. Hi Nina. Sent photo of elected mayor's email to admin about a week ago. Absolutely no response/reply/reaction whatsoever. Might try with latest letter tomorrow.
If no other way, shall try to find time to type copy of letter, but my own almost 14 year old lovely Labrador is my number 1 consideration.
Is there any way I can email the photo letter to you without everyone else knowing our email addresses? There would have to be a degree of trust between the two of us.

I put some lengthy comments on FB help find lucky page, regarding the whereabouts of the paw prints and where the clothing was placed, because if there was any chance of it been lucky then why was a tracker dog not used to try and find a scent for this poor dog. On Luckie's facebook page it says pawprints have been left on some of the family's clothing, there are also photographs of what look like (to me) dog pawprints in mud. The search team are not revealing where this was, but lets hope. Elma57, I am sure there are facts that are not known. I assume you have a hard copy of the letter rather than an email, otherwise you could just cut and paste the contents onto here? Question is, would it be helpful for everything to be made public? Does it help make sense of the fact that not only did he get out of the kennel, but that he actually managed to get off the ferry?

Nina, I sent an email on 24th January to Alan Campbell, MP, regarding DFDS and Luckie being lost from the ferry. Today I have received a long letter in reply. I do not know how to post it on here, and I do not know if anyone is interested in what the DFDS manager Michel Ulyatt says about how the events unfolded on December 21st. Some of the contents in the letter were news to me.
I have photographed the letter and am prepared to email it if someone would like to put it on here or Facebook for others to read.

THANK YOU Elma for your message. I am aware that a search team is in place and 'The Team 'is doing all they can but if its possible to bring in another team, at DFDS' expense, why not. As Elma states the area to be searched is VAST. DFDS were sent a quotation from ASUK on 26.01.17 and have not replied; can someone please tell me why? What is DFDS doing? They are to blame; IT IS INCUMBENT UPON THEM TO ACT! We are all here to help and support in any possible but please can we have some facts as to what DFDS are actually doing because from where I'm sitting I see them doing nothing. We know the success rate of ASUK; its 80% !!! Please can we have some answers. thank you .....

One of the wooded areas mentioned is Northumberland Park. I walk my dog there every day. I can't say that the park has been searched, but it is very small and most people who walk their dogs there are aware of Luckie's plight. If he was hiding there, I think he would have been sighted.

Luckie's posts seem to have come to a halt. Perhaps Shereen's last post to Ruth has put people off.
Maybe Shereen and her team have sighted Luckie ..... I do hope so .....and for very good reasons are keeping the fact quiet and are setting up feeding stations etc etc and will soon be announcing the good news that they have caught him safe and well.
If not, then I agree with Ruth. I have been down to the Port of Tyne today and walked and driven around the area. If Luckie has not been sighted as yet, I believe that several teams ..... professional or not ..... would be a great help as long as they were co-ordinated and not getting in each other's way. The area to be searched is vast!

I await, with great HOPE in my heart that DFDS have the decency to step up to the mark and employ the services of the professional search team. To date they have not responded to the quotation sent on 26th Januay. Luckie's search team is doing a wonderful job but he needs all the help he can get. Luckie escaped via the vehicle access ramp onto the ferry. He wS then seen running around the enclosed compound by a waggon driver. The driver was con erned enough to get out of his waggon and try to reach Luckie. He was unable to. At some pount the driver phoned his wife to tell her what was happening. His wife then posted this on facebook at 17.21. On the DFDS page. They have since deleted that post. However on finding the post the poster was spoken to who confirmed that her husband has since seen pictures of Luckie confirming that was the dog he was trying to reach. He also confirms there was no one else around at the time.

Help find Luckie appreciate all your support in helping to search for him. We do have a professional search team working day and night to look for Luckie, so there is no requirement for us to bring in an additional search team. We are doing our best with funds raised by our volunteers at the moment and would ask that any ideas for fundraising be sent by private message only to admin on Luckies page to avoid any unnecessary confusion. We are in daily contact now with DFDS and would like to continue working alongside them in the search for Luckie. We now have a good communication system set up which is working very well for us and Luckies family. Yesterday I received a reply to my email addressed to Norma Redfearn, elected mayor of North Tyneside and Alan Campbell, MP. I am not confident about posting a copy, but here are the points (in quotation marks) made by DFDS in response to the mayor's enquiry.

"DFDS confirm that they are actively helping with the search for Lucky and remain in touch with the owners. In fact the family returned to the UK on one of their ships 6 January to discuss what happened since Lucky's disappearance and to outline what actions had been taken to find Lucky."

Mrs Redfearn understands that DFDS have remained in touch with the family since.

"Following a request DFDS also arranged for 2,500 leaflets printed for the volunteer search team to distribute in the local area. They are also displaying posters in public areas of their Newcastle office, the passenger terminal at Port of Tyne and have placed them on bus stops in the area, as well as sharing them with local businesses. DFDS also arranged for Lucky's story to be sent to regional broadcast media and all of the regional newspapers to help raise awareness in case someone has taken him in."

"Following a discussion with the family they have also arranged for ads to be placed in the Lost and Found pets section of the regional newspapers and on classified online listings. In addition to this a further 5,000 posters will be organised for distribution and a professional animal search team has been contacted to see if they can help in the search."

"DFDS believe their actions show that they have taken this matter seriously and that have gone over and above their responsibility to the owner in trying to help with the search for Lucky."

Mrs Redfearn concluded her email to me hoping that this helps to reassure me that DFDS are doing all they can to help locate Lucky.


I shall email my thanks to Norma Redfearn. We are no further forward, but she has taken the trouble to discuss this with DFDS, and to send me a reply.

I have this terrible feeling that Lucky may have been involved in an accident either on board with moving traffic or with traffic on the quayside and did not survive. I do wish there was a whistleblower working for DFDS or the ferry terminal that would let us know the truth My other thought is that he got to shore and was possibly picked up by vehicles heading out of the country

I believe he escaped about 30 minutes before the ferry sailed....there would still have been lots of activity around the car deck entrance then I think, not somewhere I would have expected him to run towards....suppose he could have got via foot passenger ramp but you would have thought he could have been persuaded not to.

Skywalker99, the river is tidal at least as far as Newcastle and that is approximately 10 miles. As for being swept upstream on an incoming tide, I suppose so, but I don't really know. As for your last sentence, I do not understand either.

Elma57, I am not surprised at the DFDS response, there also appears to have been a lack of communication between them and the Port of Tyne authorities....it is a long time since I lived in Newcastle, and I can't remember how far up the river is tidal, however is it possible any animal caught by the tide could be swept upstream first? I am struggling to understand how he could have got off the ferry in the first place, and how he could have got himself under the quay.

I returned to N Tyneside yesterday after being away for a couple of weeks. I have kept in touch with all the posts.
Today I walked in Northumberland Park and saw many Luckie posters on bins. Later, I walked along Mariners' Lane and noticed a few places where a dog could squeeze under the fence surrounding the allotments. There is plenty of cover there. I went down Tanners Bank to the fish quay and saw more posters on lamp posts. Someone has done a very good job!
Although I know the area quite well, I have never before looked at it from the point of view of a dog living a feral existence. The area to both sides of Tanners Bank is derelict with lots of hiding places and I think that the fish factories and other food outlets probably have scraps that animals can scavenge. There is water to drink here and there.
All the way downstream from there to Tynemouth and Prior's Park there is a lot of scrub.
Sadly, any animal trapped by the tide would have little chance of getting to dry land since there is possibly only one place downstream of the fish quay beach with a ramp or steps to the promenade.

I have just been talking with one of the search organisers who thinks this is probably not Lucky but all possibilities are being explored and all options kept open. As there has been so much publicity, the search is likely to turn up every wandering dog for miles round. There have been two sightings of a loose dog in the Howdon area in the last 24 hours. Same location and same descriptions. On one occasion the person managed to get a photograph. Its blurry and everyone will see something different. Its worth noting however that last Tuesday there was a potential sighting at Howdon metro ........ fingers crossed this the break people have been needing !!

Another approach I have used when completely frustrated with a customer services 'computer says no' response is to write to the chief executive, marking the letter 'personal and confidential'. What I find so sad about this is not the fact that he escaped (because accidents do happen), but that the kennel was in an area where he could get off the ferry, that from comments I have read it is apparently not supervised, little things could have made a difference (a double door into the kennel for instance so that if a dog does escape there is a 'dog lock'), someone with the dogs at all times etc. I do hope he is found, I fear he may not be.

Nina, DFDS are unlikely to issue a statement about what happened and how he escaped as this could be subject to a court case and such a statement could be be seen as an admission of liability. I really hope that sighting is genuine. MPs are only able to help on limited things, but if enough people contact the local MP he may do something.

Same stock answers given by DFDS helping the search for Luckie yet not one representative has been seen on the ground searching when searches have been organised. Neither have they physically put up any posters. They did provide 2000 leaflets but compared with the charitable donation from murphys army of 10,000 leaflets it kind of pales in comparison.
2. Why have they removed the post dated 21.12.16 at 17.21 from their facebook page regarding a waggon driver who has seen a black dog with a brown collar running around the port area? (Lady subsequently spoken to and her husband the waggon driver who got out of his waggon to try to catch the dog and confirmed it was Luckie. He also confirms the dog was alone and there was no one else in sight!!!)
3. It has been reported that Lucky remained in the vicinity of the ferry terminal for 5 days whether under the jetty or not. Where was DFDS's help trying to catch Luckie??

Im also thinking if you write this letter maybe it could be displayed and then used as a template for other local residents to copy and send??? X

Elma57 thank you so much for your reply. The thing is I am sure all followers of this page are mystified how this came about. DFDS have not given us the public as far as I know any explanation of why she escaped. What they did to secure Lucky when on land and what they have done to try and find the wheherabouts of Lucky. Its beem a long 4 weeks of trying to find out the truth, and we are still not much further forward. A family and their dog go on Christmas holiday with DFDS and end up with a lost dog. I am sure these words may give you some guidance but others may have a much better way of putting it. Your help in the area is gratefully accepted. I am sure MP;s cannot be dimissed as easy as the public can be as far as DFDS is concerned.

How was the sighting on 27th confirmed? Could they be mistaken and was it perhaps a similar local dog. With a perimeter fence is there still a possibility that Lucky may not have left the port. Fishing vessels spend many weeks at sea could Lucky have boarded a boat that has sailed or one still berthed at the port. There are so many places Lucky could be. For security reasons Port of Tyne are unlikely to allow a mass search of the area, but if K9tracker was willing and allowed to search there may be some answers.

I have looked at the photos....would he really have jumped off that quay into the water? It would have been noisy, wouldn't he have bolted for somewhere quieter? Would anyone have seen him if he did. Re my query earlier about the time that Luckie escaped from the ferry, I now believe it was 16.30. That makes sense to me as the ship leaves the dock at 5pm.

For those of you who do not know the area, you could google "DFDS ferry terminal North Shields photos." It might help to see pictures of the area.

I really do not know how Luckie, once in the sea, would be able to get out again, except if he was washed towards the fish quay beach or similar. Also, it would have been dark when this happened.

For anyone else contacting the MPs as Nina suggested, I have had a reply from Alan Campbell's office to say that he will only support requests from his own constituents. As I live way down south my emails will not have helped Luckie, but any sent by local people may have some effect.

A thought: he was seen on land on 21st December. The ferry company must have details of everyone who travelled through there in either direction from that time onwards so it should be possible for DFDS to contact all those people with Luckie's picture asking if anyone saw him again after 21st either in the terminal or surrounding area if he left it. That might shed some light on when and where he went next. Although data protection would not allow DFDS to give out those details, they could email shot them all with an attachment.

I have followed this sad story from the beginning. There are so many conflicting stories and I think someone must know exactly how this occurred and what happened to Luckie immediately after leaving the ferry. Claire C, under stand what you are saying, and like you I fear he may have lost his life in the water. However, the ferry port is on the river which is not that wide, and the port is about a mile and a half up it. At its mouth the entrance to the sea is not that wide because of the harbour walls. The river is tidal at this point though. The story of what actually happened has conflicting reports, but I believe he walked off the ferry as it hadn't left port. The latest post on his Facebook page says that the Only help the ferry company have given is to print 2000 leaflets. No staff have joined searches, and it appears that no attempts were made to secure him when he was seen. His latest poster indicates a reward is available for his safe return.

According to Lucky's Facebook page the last confirmed sighting was 27th December 2016 with an unconfirmed sighting on 30th December therefore it seems he did survive leaving the ferry as he was seen afterwards. There are also other comments on the page that Lucky was seen under the jetty. The Thunderclap details were from information on Lucky's page. The text was agreed with Lucky's search team who are aware of the full details of his escaping from the ferry and subsequent events. The bottom line seems to be that help needed to secure Lucky in the first five days when he was waiting on the quay was not forthcoming ...

It was reported that Lucky was seen in & out of the water ,sorry I did not mean he was in the water the whole time. It could also mean that each time the water level rose he was swept out with the tide and swam back. He was sighted for 5 days after he left the water and he was sat under the jetty .

I think you have to ask yourself the question would any human or animal, especially an animal with I think longish thick fur can survive in an extremely cold North sea for 2 days swimming around the answer would be no! Hypothermia would have set in within 10 minutes and I am being generous on time! For a dog, the cold and wet fur would have made it succomb earlier! I have just been reading the post that nickyjm put on 17/01 @1300 where it implies that if Lucky had drowned then his body would have been washed up along the beaches, this is not always correct due to the weight of wet fur it usually gets dragged under and may never resurface but gets dragged by the currents. Bodies also swell to a large extent and very sadly you have to think of a balloon! Like you all, i sincerely hope that Lucky is safe on land somewhere. I apologise if I have been blunt.

Agree the priority is finding Lucky. He could still be in the local area or further afield by now so his details/photos/posters need distributing locally sharing everywhere to make as many people as possible aware and to try and get more sightings. For this resources are needed for all methods of publicity. His family, group and volunteers are doing all they can. Lucky desperately needs more people to be aware he is still missing and actively looking for him.

This is the response given to people posting to the ferry’s FB page asking what they are doing to help find Lucky :
“DFDS UK We are actively helping with the search for Lucky. We're in contact with his family to give updates & assist where we can. ^KM”
The were also asked “Why was the area of the ferry used to hold dogs travelling with their families not secured?” but this was not answered.

It has been suggested by a number of people on Lucky’s page that the ferry company should be doing all they can to help find Lucky but his page clarified yesterday as follows:
“They won’t deal direct with us. Luckies owner has to email them in polish all our requests and then they will consider a compensation claim when it’s been addressed by their legal team it’s not effective for us we are having to work on our feet”

The volunteer team searching for Lucky had to order another 3000 leaflets themselves on Friday and volunteers are distributing them.

The bottom line is that Lucky escaped from an area used to hold dogs travelling with their families Mistakes/accidents happen, but the true worth of any organisation is the ability to speedily recognise this and acknowledge, rectify and assist as any good PR department knows, and especially if life/lives are in danger and Lucky's was and is. It can be the key to turning bad publicity into good publicity. Speed was and still is of the essence, and passing everything through a legal team rather than pulling out all the stops to help find Lucky, is not helping Lucky or his family. A search for their official website brings up this statement: "Whether you're seeking freight shipping services, logistics solutions or passenger ferries, DFDS delivers superior reliability and unwavering customer service"

Another of their customers has posted on their Facebook page today as follows:
“Travelled with dfds on Monday from ijmuiden to Newcastle. I was travelling with my daughter in law and two small puppies. Now the accommodation for people was perfect but the "dog hotel" let down dfds. I had to make four journeys to the desk about the freezing conditions of the dog hotel. Also the desk staff smart assed answer was not appreciated. Maybe we can send someone done to clap the puppies. Mmmm not happy. Also think you have to bring kennels up in standard some of the kennel fronts very rusty. Also the "sand box " had just had fresh sand thrown on used sand, Sorry dfds, but can't give you full marks for this trip.....disappointed. As far as I'm concerned two legs or four, a fee was paid for accommodation for the pups too, sub standard on dfds part.”

Feel this is all very worrying for other dog owners who may be considering travelling with their family pet on ferries.

If Luccky got into the car hold (about the only place he could really escape from the ferry from) he must have been terrified, they are very noisy places.

In my opinion the next step should be to contact the MP for North Shields. Make them aware of what has gone on in the past, at present and maybe in the future with a major company in their area. Its possible that dog owners may start to avoid using DFDS if DFDS are seen to be having problems.

LouLou, sadly Lucky's family were not aware of his plight.

Lucky escaped from the holding area on the ferry one month ago today and the last positive sighting was 27th December 2016. More sightings are desperately needed. Lucky could still be in the local area or further afield by now so all shares everywhere are valuable to make as many people as possible aware of this little lad.

He is a nice looking dog and could generate a tidy sum as a stud dog. Nina, it is up to the owner where the dog travels, it costs £19 for it to go in the car and and extra £6 for it to go in the kennels. Emma 57, hadn't thought about the tide, although have to confess have wondered how he got off the boat as if the ramps were still down there was probably traffic come up them. I suspect that the family were told he would be caught because if they had been told 'tough, you're on your own' they may have caught the next ferry back to Newcastle to find him (I would have done). Like Skywalker, I find it hard to believe that Luckie spent 5 days under the jetty. The tide comes in twice a day and can rise by 5 to 6 metres. How did the dog keep safe at high tide and from where did he get food and fresh water? I have not been within the security fencing on the land surrounding
the port, but ferries dock and leave there daily. Most dogs would be terrified to remain in the vicinity of the churning water and the noise of metal ramps being lowered etc.

It says on his Facebook page that information has been received that says the secure door to the kennel area may have been left wedged open on the day he escaped, but there is no current proof if this. I read through the DFDS T's and C's...they say they are not responsible for the loss of animals. This means that whether DFDS have any liability for the loss would need to be decided by a court (I believe they do as they provided the kennel area and they had accepted a payment to secure him there). If it is true that the owners were told he would be secured for them and kept until his return then a court may also decide that the contract had been set aside. I hope the family have got good legal advice and that someone might help them pro-bono. I find it hard to believe he sat under the quay for five days and it is not even clear whether anyone even fed him....just so sad.

To me DFDS have not done enough to help there should have been appeals sent out all over the country so that anyone going to the ports to keep a look out for Lucky .I have contacted DFDS but they are not saying what they are doing to help, its certainly not publicity because they do not want to admit a dog in their care was lost .

Luckie is black on her back but it is not clear from the photos if her belly is tan. Just to clarify, the facebook post about the male spaniel found on the beach in South Wales on the weekend was mine. I put the post together after seeing a very vague post on a local page which was later deleted because the person who found the dog didn't like the amount of questions being asked. I contacted the finder and with a lot of persuasion managed to get the info that I then posted everywhere I could think of.
He was found on Llantwit Major beach which is in the Vale of Glamorgan.
From the details, I don't believe the dog found could have been Lucky. The collar had silver bones, Lucky's collar has paw prints. Also, the finder said the dog she found was fox coloured, Lucky is a black and tan.

Just thinking that those lovely people searching may have been calling him by a name he didn't recognise. I also recall the petiition launched by people whose dog suffocated in its car on the ferry & subsequently brought about the change to a pet area. DFDS need to pay for one of the missing dog detectives to help look for this boy.
I've travelled on the ferry from North Shields many many times, but never again if they dont get their butts in gear and really help out. I feel sick for the family.

This is the link to the DFDS Facebook page..there are several visitor posts about lucky, one comment implies they remove them...beyond me why they don't have an area on board for owners and their dogs.this would have been avoided if they did have. No doubt they charged the owners extra so they could loose Lucky.

Ronmaxtye F1 I agree I'm definitely going to write something I think the way thy have dealt with this is appalling. They already had a dog die in a car because they wouldn't let the owner take it on deck. This is why they started this pet area I believe. You would think they would have had covered all bases. Ferries are noisy smelly scary places for animals and for the animals to be left alone without owners would be hell on earth for any dog never mind a nervous one!

Hollieberry - I posted the found deceased spaniel and have looked back and agree it was posted to WhitleyBay facebook group so I actually think the find area should be Leamington Spa as that is where the vets took the dog. Re spaniel found on Whitley Bay beach, 24/12/16:
If Luckie had died soon after leaving the ferry, I do not think his little body would have decomposed to such an extent so quickly, but I am not an expert!
A dog was lost on the coast of Whitley Bay a few months ago. It's body was washed up on Redcar beach about 30 miles south of here, so I assume that if Luckie had drowned/died his body would be found in the Tyne or further south down the east coast.
Possible sightings have been seen in Boldon which is inland and south of the river Tyne. It is possible that he is there. It is improbable that he swam across the river, improbable that he trotted through any of the Tyne Tunnels without being seen on CTV, but possible that he arrived there in someone's vehicle or was walked on lead through the pedestrian tunnel.
It is possible that someone has taken Luckie in to their home, for whatever reason.
It is possible that he is roaming free.
A BIG FINANCIAL REWARD FROM DFDS might just make Luckie reappear or get him the publicity that he needs for people to search diligently for him.

For all of Luckies supporters, here is the latest information from the Search Team Investigations. A press release went out yesterday which said that the ferry company were helping in the search for Luckie, they have helped with printing posters, yes, but they have not volunteered to help on foot with searching. We have information from a reliable source that states that Luckie did spend 5 days under the jetty in the Port of Tyne. He was seen by several people running around back and forth between the main road and the underneath the jetty. When Christine Kipling spoke to a representative from management at Port of Tyne, she was told that Luckie was seen swimming downstream towards the sea the morning after he left the ferry, and was never seen again. We now know that this is inaccurate. We also know that the initial search for Luckie that was organised by a concerned member of the public after the fifth day when Luckie disappeared from under the jetty and did not include anyone from the ferry company. We have also been informed that the phone calls to relevant organisations to alert them about Luckie were made by staff from Port of Tyne not the ferry company. The ferry company were given one of Luckies toys to assist in his recovery, this was never used, no one from the ferry company visited the area under the jetty to observe or attempt to recover Luckie. Our search team have spoken to a representative from the RNLI who have stated that they were called out by Port of Tyne staff to look for Luckie under the jetty on one occasion which was the day after he went missing. They never saw Luckie under the jetty. They also said that if Luckie had drowned his body would have washed downstream past their station and onto one of the small beaches downstream. No body has been seen or recovered. Based on this information the search team are continuing their search for Luckie in conjunction with the reported possible sightings in nearby areas. Luckie has been failed in every respect, allowed to bolt from a secure area, chased and frightened, left alone for 5 days in an area where he felt safe, and then forgotten about. We will not forget you Luckie, we are still looking for you. The search team have said that the hardest part of this task has been to see the children having to leave Luckies favourite teddy bear on the search site, it has been truly heart-breaking and continues to be a living hell for his family, not knowing what happened to their beloved little boy, who waited so faithfully for 5 days for someone to come for him. The search goes on x

Perhaps the comments under 'where lost' could be updated to more accurately reflect the facts, as these appear on the poster. This I believe can be done by Admin. Once this is done perhaps this can be bumped and circulated far and wide. I see Lucky is microchipped is it registered with one of the UK databases? If not it would be a good idea to do that. Are the family aware of 110121, which someone has suggested may be him, but details very vague.

HELP Find Luckie the Missing Ferry Dog, this is the REAL story. Luckie did not jump from a car on board the DFDS ferry. Luckie bolted from an unsecured area on board the ferry used to hold dogs travelling with their families. Luckie was chased by several strange people and therefore found his way off the ferry and into the port area. Gates had been left open which allowed Luckie to flee in both directions along the port eventually ending up in the water trying desperately hard to reunite himself with his family. The family were not informed of Luckies plight immediately and there was much confusion and no process in place to deal with or contain the situation. The message to alert the family went out over tannoy in THE WRONG LANGUAGE. The family are Polish and do not have a fluent understand of English. The ship had already set sail before the family were alerted. They were REFUSED the option of returning to port to retrieve their dog due to DFDS being subjected to a heavy fine. They were given the following reassurance. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR OUR STAFF NOT TO CONTAIN YOUR DOG. LUCKIE WILL BE CAUGHT CONTAINED AND LOOKED AFTER WHILE YOU ARE ON HOLIDAY. HE WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU ON YOUR RETURN. These are the words of his ten year old owners daughter, who told me that story through tears. Luckie remained static for FIVE days under the quay waiting for his family and still they couldn't contain him, five days in perishing conditions he remained loyal. Now he has disappeared. If the right processes had been followed he could have been caught. The family have done everything within their power to put things in place to find their dog and have searched in horrendous weather conditions with their young children in the hope of finding their brave little boy. Luckie remains missing, we have no news, mo answers, no confirmed sightings, very few volunteers, all we have is hope. Please say a prayer for brave Luckie the missing DFDS ferry dog.

Thank you we have people involved in search with the equipment needed to trap Lucky but we need sighting of him first - thermal imaging cameras were used in the first couple of days searching on riverside and under quay where sighted by security guard but nothing found unfortunately

The Ferry was still docked ,so he just got off....not sure how he actually escaped but ferry co are now helping with posters etc and also sent alert out at the time before leaving,but because owners are Polish they missed the alert and ferry had to leave as nobody came forward...from what I understand staff did try and catch him...these poor people must of had the most horrendous time away...they are distraught ...owners are coming down from Scotland for tomorrow.

Are all the details of this sad story known to be accurate? It sounds as if the family were heading on holiday on the ferry, the dog was also travelling with them but in a kennel on board the ferry? He then escaped (how?) from the kennel AND escaped from the ferry by jumping overboard ( how? Surely there are barriers to prevent small children from falling overboard?) what happened when the family arrived at the destination and the dog was missing? Did anyone actually see what happened to him?

Appeal for help & summary so far posted on FB today x "💥HELP FIND LUCKY💥 This is little Luckie a very tragic story but such a brave little boy. Luckie escaped from a holding kennel on board a ferry leaving North Shields. He was panicking and frightened he couldn't find his Mum. He ran off the ferry and tried to swim back again looking for his family. He tried several times but the ferry had gone leaving him behind and his family had no idea. For two days he swam around the port searching for his Mum but couldn't find her. Exhausted he left the water and was seen on land looking out waiting for the ferry to return. No one could catch poor luckie and now we have no idea where he might be. The family returned from their holiday and had to go home to Scotland, luckie is now more alone than ever. Has it been suggested that the owners leave something with their scent on somewhere at the ferry terminal, perhaps where he was seen sitting waiting for the ferry to return, in case Luckie has been returning there. It may encourage him to stay in that area. Not sure how practical that is.

Jayne......latest from the page....there have been two sightings at Percy Main and Meadow well...but does not say when....Family are going back to North Shields from Scotland where they live, atbthe weekend......another update..last reported sighting at Black Middens on 30 December.

That is so sad - is there anyone in the local area who could print and get posters put up / handed out? Would it help to re-send alerts to postcode groups? Perhaps owners could contact local newspapers / radio to get more media alerts out. Have the owners contacted vets, rescue centres and also advised the microchip company.

This is little Luckie a very tragic story but such a brave little boy. Luckie escaped from a holding kennel on board a ferry leaving North Shields. He was panicking and frightened he couldn't find his Mum. He ran off the ferry and tried to swim back again looking for his family. He tried several times but the ferry had gone leaving him behind and his family had no idea. For two days he swam around the port searching for his Mum but couldn't find her. Exhausted he left the water and was seen on land looking out waiting for the ferry to return. No one could catch poor luckie and now we have no idea where he might be. The family returned from their holiday and had to go home to Scotland, luckie is now more alone than ever. We need volunteers to join the group and help to search for him. We need a printer willing to print posters to hand out to volunteers. We need a drone to search a large area. We need to find this brave little boy who needs to find his Mum before its too late. Please can anyone help us x

• If your dog is microchipped please let the microchip company know that your dog is missing and check that all details are up to date.
• Owners targeted by a malicious hoaxer demanding money for the return of their dog should phone the police on 101 immediately and contact admin@doglost.co.uk
• A photograph of your dog is essential for the website. If you have not already uploaded one, please do so by clicking on Update details. Alternatively you can email it to admin@doglost.co.uk quoting the dog's DogLost ID number: (109302)
• Obtain a missing poster by clicking on View poster above. Posters are very important so start postering now!
• You will need to be logged in to upload photos, edit your dog's details, or add comments. You can add comments by clicking on Click here to add a comment.
• Contact dog wardens, vets and local rescue centres, and in Scotland, the Police. Give a detailed description with any distinguishing marks/scars or send them a copy of your DogLost poster. You can find vets in your area here.
