Any chance you could do a list of numbers somewhere that you update? It's really hard if you have someone on the phone saying they are about to shoot your dog, trying to find numbers
nickyb
To avoid distraught and vulnerable owners having to endure this nightmare when i saw a dog lost on here i rang doglost to offer they put my 2 mobiles as contact - as a stranger these horrid people wouldnt affect me - you accepted and a few days later v early 1 morning - phones on 24/7 i got that magic call from anonymous person with info i passed to u and hey presto within 24 hrs you had worked your magic and the dog was reunited with the very poorly owner - dont know who was more excited the dog the owner you all or me!

Good news no scam calls to owners since we took numbers down from public view...Moe work for the admin team but worth it!
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
Apologies to everyone but this scammer is being particularly vile and threatening so for your own security have removed all numbers from this website until further notice...Badged helpers are still able to view telephone numbers so we can get hold of you if need be...The numbers are not visible to the general public...You can still print off the posters for local use and suggest you write your number in the space provided...Please ensure you do not give your number out on SM...messages can be left on your dogs page on Doglost and owners will be notified automatically that they have a new message....You must be logged in to leave a message.

If you need to speak directly to an owner then please email admin@doglost.co.uk with the dog ID and your number and can forward to owner and request they call you...we cannot give owners numbers out directly as now covered by GDPR...Data protection.

Please all still be aware of scam callers, it can come from anyone with a no caller ID, or even a number showing, any WhatsApp/ text messages.

These people can state your dog is injured and needs vet care , claiming they are vets / RSCPA / dog warden and demand a release fee, they can state that they found your dog but want money as a reward.

Please do not fall for any stories about the scammer claiming the dog has grown attached to the family. They can be very convincing and intimidating so please be prepared , you can leave your number off any listings and then edit the poster with your number on.

DO NOT transfer any money/ arrange to meet up with anyone. Simply end the phone call and report to your local police or through Crimestoppers.

These phone calls are still going on daily.
What is it with these IDIOTS.
They need to get a job better still go in the army and try to be REAL MEN.

Had a call at 5pm scouse. Bloke. Saying he had the dog. Kept saying mate. Then said he’s no use to me so unless I give him £500 he will kill him.
Tammy
I had 2 calls from them, luckily the 2nd call was after CID confirmed they had retrieved my puppy after it was stolen this afternoon. They were demanding £1000 or I would never see him again then the 2nd call they sang down the phone repeatedly "busters gunna die" so I laughed and told them he was already home. He had a scouse accent

*** You may get a call saying someone has bought your dog & paid x amount for it & they will happily bring it back to you on transfer of funds. They will say their child loves the dog & it will break their hearts, but they want to do the right thing! DO NOT FALL FOR IT. Get photographic proof if anyone says this. They will take your money & you will not see your dog ***

Posted on DogLost Durham facebook page ...although it is regarding a lost cat, same could apply for lost dog ....As some of you may know, we lost our cat last Friday but thankfully he returned unharmed late Monday night. However, I thought I would make everyone aware of a scam we fell for in our upset and vulnerable state in the hope no one else is caught out!!
On Sunday late afternoon, we had a call from someone pretending to be from the RSPCA. They said they believed they had found our cat and that he had been taken to a local vets. They had my postcode, and the cats name (both of which I hadn't shared this on Social Media posts). Also they gave me the first 8 digits of his microchip to check (I now know these are pretty universal and it is the last 8 that are pet specific). The story went on they told me he was found down by Romily Park. They then put me on hold to check if he needed treatment after which advised me that he was well and only cost was a £5.00 discharge fee. I paid this by card and didn't think anything of it as I was so happy they had found my cat. I even asked if they could find out if the person who found him would let me have their details so we could thank them.
We therefore made our way down the vets and whilst on route, he rang again saying there was a problem with the card and could I give details again. I explained I didn't have card with me, he asked if I had another which I said I didn't. When they explained the fee was with the vets, I said I had cash or could transfer by phone as I was outside vets which he said was fine.
On arrival vets was closed, but we didn't think anything of it as it was a Sunday. I rang the bell and called the emergency line. Whilst waiting my husband had a text from the bank explaining they had stopped a transaction and to call the bank. The penny clicked straight away it was a scam!! Our hearts sunk. We called the bank and the scumbag had tried to take over £400.00 in three transactions.
Thankfully the bank stopped it and we found our cat in any event, but wanted to make people aware of this in the hope no-one else is caught out. I was angry with myself for falling for the scam but was upset and vulnerable at the time and so received he had been 'found', I didn't question it.
Sorry for the long message but thought it was important people are made aware of the scam.
NickyB
when a dog went missing owned by a very sick gentleman many many miles away from me i offered to be the contact number - knowing how traumatised and vulnerable the dog owner is in every case and may panic and get angry etc etc. several weeks later when i got a phone call at 07.00 one morning (kept phone on 24/7) i was able to remain cool calm and collected and say the right things. rang doglost immediately with info - hey presto a happy ending

Call the Police and report; get an incident/CRN
Report to action fraud - https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/reporting-fraud-and-cyber-crime
E-mail in to stolen@doglost.co.uk so that we can log details and then get details straight over to investigating officer

I know a lot of us volunteers have had our own phone numbers on for some owners, and we have experienced these scammers and the calls are very distressing. So for owners to have to deal with this when they are going through so much stress already with their beloved pet missing, is truly horrendous. I’m sorry to anyone who has had to deal with these types of calls.
Well done and thank you to EVERYONE xx

Huge well done to EVERYONE involved, I would just like to say thank you to ALL volunteers that have had these owners in floods of tears pouring their hearts out on the other end of a phone, that have spent many many hours reassuring them that information will be passed on, when everyone works together, that is when the magic happens xx

Lets hope all owners will be reimbursed & with interest..
Are all owners on all listings, now being emailed, in case some were too scared to come forward, or don't perhaps realise they aren't alone in being a victim of these Evil, greedy criminals?..

I did a share post again a few days ago due to seeing the number of posts re these scams. When contacting owners to help with dogs in my areas one of the first things I do is make them aware of this scam so they are pre warned. Have also seen cat owners being targeted.

Just had a disturbing phone call about our lost dog Amis. The male asked if this was the number for the lost dog, and I said yes. He said that he thought he had the dog, so I asked him how is he. The reply was that he was dead. I asked where is he twice, and each time the response was that he was on the floor. The line went dead, and the call log on the phone lists it as an unknown number. GU21 area.

Owner of a dog missing in Norfolk has just received a similar message as posted below by thedogfinder saying that the ex has stolen her dog but couldn’t give any details until money was sent.
Owner has reported this to the Police dealing with her missing dog.
.
2 separate owners have had the similar message in the last 24 hours from this number 07512 335146 - saying “my ex has your dog / cat , he stole it etc”. Number had already been flagged up online by others so assume a hoax? All owners please be aware, it’s awfully distressing anyway without idiots like this making matters worse. BEWARE - maybe just block the number now anyway 🤬Last edited: 2019-11-14 08:52:43 by .

It appears that the scammers are leaving false reports on telephone number monitoring sites, so that when contact is received, an owner googles the number & is falsely given the impression that someone has had their dog back by engaging with the scammer, this has been reported but please do email stolen@doglost.co.uk if you are contacted, the numbers are changing regularly and we have full records. Not sure whether this is related or not, but I have recently been receiving phishing emails purporting to come from the Doglost Shop. They actually come from an address in Lithuania. I have emailed the shop a couple of times about this, pointing out their obligations to keep our data secure, but have yet to receive even the courtesy of an acknowledgement. If there is a better channel for me to report the details to, please would someone in the DL community let me know via this thread? It's in all our interests. Thanks!
