Regarding keeping livestock safe - I think you will find that the majority of farmers do do their utmost. After all, there is neither profit in losing your own animals or the support of the community by killing someone else's - especially now when many have had to turn their hand at diversifying into direct business with Joe Public. How though, can you keep livestock safe when farmed on hill country? or any kind of open access land? or where there are footpaths? We have a beautiful countryside and people (with their dogs) quite rightly want to walk in it - if farmers had to keep it secure would that be possible? Yes, there are probably instances of landowners being a bit too quick to assume that a dog is going to kill if running after livestock, and it may have been possible to catch it instead, but, as Corbiere points out, how much more damage in terms of injured/aborted animals might there be - and who amongst us wants that for any animal? Judging from the response to Elder's story no-one.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

seeing as we're discussing it, how about farmers taking responsibility for keeping their animals safe? I get a bit sick of wildlife and pet animals being scapegoated for harming livestock - which is, as we should all know and recognise, animals used for human consumption. Sleep tight Star. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've farmed sheep, which we all should know is now a way of life in which it's almost impossible to make a living. Sadly if a dog chases ewes in lamb, even if it's only 'herding' chasing, they can and do abort. Poor Star may have attacked lambs too - Cattle Dogs do nip and have been bred to have quite a dominant streak, and we don't know what happened. The story is terribly sad, but you can't really blame the farmer for protecting his stock. Entire flocks can panic and at this time of year, it could be a total financial disaster for him. Taking in a rescue dog is always going to be a risk - which won't stop us doing it. Rest in peace Star, what a shame your life couldn't have been a longer happier one.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sad to hear about this poor lad. However it is beyond me how quick some are to pass generic judgement on others as to the whys and wherefores of their actions, without yet knowing the facts. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Such sad news to see, dont know if farmer realised Star was a herding breed as Australian Cattle Dogs are still not a common breed in the UK. At least owner has closure, albeit not what any of us wanted to see. There's many of our friends already at the bridge, Star will have plenty of run friends to play with.xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is just devastating news. When talking to his owners they were doing a brilliant job, with the help of the RSPCA and DW in searching for Star. The lambing season was a big worry especially as Australian Cattle dogs are a herding breed. I am so sorry it has ended this way poor Star has only ever known Kennel life and had a future ahead of him with his new family. Deepest thoughts are with his owners and RSPCA staff who have known him since a puppy. Run free at the bridge and sweet dreams Star. Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

By the edge of a wood at the foot of the hill, Is a lush green meadow where time stands still, Where friends of a man and woman do run, when their time on earth is over and done, For here between this world and the next , Is a place where each beloved creature find's rest ! On this golden land they wait and play till Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. No more do they suffer in pain or sadness for here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness!!!! Their limbs are restored their health renewed their bodies have healed strength imbuled !!!! They run through the grass without even a care, untill one day they Stop and sniff the air !!! All ears pricked forward, eyes dart side to side, Then all of a sudden one breaks from the pack ! For just that instant their eyes have met Together again person and pet, So they run to each other these friends from long past, The time of their parting is over at last !! The sadness they felt whilie they were apart has turned into Joy once more in each heart, They embrace with a love that will last forever and side by side they cross over together !! Run wild and free STAR with the warmth of the sun on your back forever ! XXXXXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unfortunately, owner has received a call that Star was shot by a farmer, she thanks you all for your help and support, but remains too upset to talk at the moment - hence the delay in letting us know, run free Star. My Keelah will look after you up there (watch her breath though, it's toxic!)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spoken to owner, photo needs to be scanned, have discussed other ways of getting a photo to DL, hopefully one will be sent by mobile later when partner gets in. Star is a rescue dog and has only been with owners for two weeks, he has lived in kennels since a pup and is not used to the outside world and people. He ran off while on a walk and was spooked by a stranger. There has been many sightings of him within a 5 mile radius. Staff at the RSPCA have been helping with the search and still have his litter brother. Have discussed scenting etc and advised it would be better using the scent of an RSPCA staff member that Star is very familiar with, his litter brother has been getting taken to the area. Owners also have another dog which Star is used to. If Star settles in one place and a feeding pattern can be set up, a blanket with his litter brothers scent can be left. Owner has said she will register and update us. Sending SCENTING & MAPPING instructions to owner. Owner there other reunited dogs you can look at to get some useful advice on what/what not to do (Rambo GSD/Ted BC/Fable GSD). Good luck and hope you get this boy home soon.
