Ratel I totally agree with you on that one. Chris thank you for the update on the lovely Mocca .

Thanks for the update, I hope Mocco learns to trust more as time goes, she deserves the chance of a loving home eventually.
Chris
Just a little update. Mocca is making some progress. She is being taken out for walks on a double lead by the girl who is looking after her at Stubbington Ark but is still very wary of humans. Ali will give more info when she has time. So far so good.Last edited: 2016-02-13 15:36:04 by Chris

Lovely to see an updated picture of Mocco. Looking pretty well, all things considered.

Been away for the weekend.Looked at this as soon as I was back. Great to see Moocca now safe. Well done Al

Wow! I missed this good news as well...so many dogs and phone calls coming into HQ....Well done everyone! Special thanks to Ali and Ray for his ongoing advise and knowledge.

Prospective new owners MUST be given improved information on the difficulties involved in adopting one of these tragic dogs. Until they settle, security measures must be 100% which many families are unable to provide, however well-meaning. The whole tricky subject needs airing and discussing fully as far too many dogs are escaping, human error being the cause every time.

Poor girl, glad she's safe now, but must feel very claustrophobic after being free for so long, especially if she hasn't got a bond with anyone. I hope so very much that she settles down and learns to love and trust again and gets a loving new home xxx

Fantastic news well done all espicially Ali .....I do hope Mocca will be able to be given the chance of a new home. I hope we get an update on how she progresses... stay safe now Beautiful Girl xxxxx

However did I miss this amazing news???
I am so pleased that Mocco is at last safe, Ali, you have been so dedicated you too must be exhausted after all this time. Your dedication has paid off though. I hope the rehab goes well, keep us updated on her progress. X

Congratulations! I have been following this saga with interest as Ray told me how elusive and crafty she is, and what a challenge to catch.

Couldn't agree more on the advice regarding the handover and ensuing months care of dogs like this. I saw..last year.. an overseas rescue dog collected at an M5 services and new owners arrived with just a slip lead and put it loose into their car..no crate to prevent escape when they opened the door again. The tragedy is so many fight to get loose and escape as new owners are so ill prepared. It HAS to be done better for the dogs sakes and those working hard for them in countries like Romania. New owners need to have car crate, harness, double leads and months of patience to get the dog used to a totally new way of life. Once in the new home security to contain the dog is paramount whilst it settles and learns to bond..this can take over a year for distressed dogs and you may always need to walk it secured if it remains in "escape mode". You cannot take them on and expect the dog to settle into home life and a relationship with humans when all it sees in its head is "trapped".

What a great result and well everyone for their patience in getting this one home.

I think on a personal note, that folk that take on any rescue dog and especially street dogs think that they can be treated as a normal dog and that its grateful to have a home, nice soft comfy bed and lots of food and treats! New owners should use double leads as a "just in case" insurance. Even more so when transporting these poor dogs and then being handed over in a noisy motorway car park as so many are! Again people run away with the thought that even in a home for a few months they can be trusted and let them off a lead. My neighbour is a classic case and he is lucky his dog was caught by somebody who rugby tackled the dog before it nearly went under a lorry! This dear dog is now busy digging its way out under my fence! Hes had this dog some 8 months! Use a double lead at all times, attend a local dog training club and dont hurry them along. Everything done in their own time. These are purely my own thoughts.

Ali - I am so very pleased for you that you have succeeded in saving poor Mocca - you have worked so tirelessly and it is due to your perseverance. I was delighted today to see "Reunited" for Mocca when I checked my followed dogs.
I agree wholeheartedly with Sylvie - I have become increasingly disturbed about this rescue dog situation and am following 3 still missing ones besides Mocca currently. The new owners do not always seem to be aware of just how ingenious European street dogs are at escaping, nor how scared they are. There needs to be a lot more education about this to prevent as much as possible these frequent escapes. Perhaps, also, it is very important to vet ALL the new prospective owners more thoroughly to make sure they are suitably responsible because these escapes can't all have been unavoidable.
Chris
Sylvie is right. I know of another rescue dog who is on the run in Hetfordshire. She is a Romanian rescue who scaled a 6ft wire enclosure and has been on the run since end of December. Unfortunately she has dropped off the radar so isn't being fed etc. There have been no sightings for a while. Another dog who came over on the same flight as Audrey also went missing but luckily was trapped in a barn so was reunited with her owner. These dogs are so terrified and used to fending for themselves on the streets that is the only place they feel in control. Maybe there should be a bit more control over the process of bringing these dogs over. It is so stressful for them and the people caring for them. The lady I have been in touch with was telling me that it was 3 months before her rescue would take food from her and 9 months before she could touch him.
Ellie
What a lovely ending. Well done to all involved you are stars!Stay safe now lovely Mocca and I do hope you find a happy forever home!

Wonderful news! Well done Ali - you're a star. I hope it's not too long before the lovely Mocco finds her forever home x
sylvie derrick
Nicky Mocco isn't Ali's dog. Ali is the wonderful person who took on the job of locating Mocco, and was dedicated over three months to bring this to a happy conclusion. Mocco is now with the RSPCA but I am sure Ali will have more to say later.

Being in the dog world nearly every week I hear of a *foreign* dog going missing on it's first or second day of being in a new British home. It is causing more distress to the dogs and untold stress to the people trying to locate and recapture the dog. There are a lot a questions to be asked, and answered, as to how the rehabilitation prior to homing takes place and of what duration? What advice is given to new owners? This is not aimed at the rescue from where Mocco came, as I know nothing about them, but there has to be something wrong for so many animals to go missing almost immediately on arrival. These dogs are a savvy lot and one step ahead of us mere humans :)

Just the best news to start the day! Hope its going to be one of those reuniting days !.Massive well done to Ali,you must be overwhelmed with relief and happiness ,hope Mocca recovers quickly and enjoys a long and happy life x
NickyB
I should add a word of warning - even after 18 months rosie would attack anybody who suddenly took her by surprise so we must never forget that. it has happened twice already - and she and we are lucky friends did not go to police
NickyB
wow! on the run since October - I guess being a street dog resulted in her being able to be street wise and survive. you must be unbelievably happy to have her back. my Romanian rescue rosie is here because of doglost. she was lost like so many others the day she arrived. 3 weeks later she was found a terrified wreck 25 miles away. I offered to look after in june 2014 and of course feb 2016 she is still here...... sadly nobody even the rescue groups seem to understand how wild and terrified of all humans these foreign street dogs are. happily for my rosie and for your mocco there is a happy ending finally.

Absolutely fantastic news. Stay safe now Mocca and I know you will find a loving and forever home and learn to trust people who will love you so much and care for you. xxxxxx

What great news to wake up to, well done Ali, and all involved for persevering with mocco, worth it in the end, Happy life now Mocco.xx
sylvie derrick
Oh that is the most wonderful news to wake up to. You must be elated. The amount of effort Ali has put into this has been extraordinarily committed. A pat on the back isn't enough Ali, well done a million times. I would hope that Mocca would be rehomed away from the area. There are too many memories and temptations for her to drop back into her nomadic existence in this area. She probably knows the area better than any of us. She is now on the next stage of her incredible journey.
Chris
This is the most brilliant news. All credit must go to Ali who has worked non stop in order to achieve this goal. Her dedication to Mocca has been amazing.x

RAYDEDICOAT
Well done, what a fantastic job you have done!!despite all the agro from so called residents of Weeke..as per usual there are good and bad.Mocca was a bit different to the usual foreign street runners, she wanted to be caught and indeed she WAS caught...say no more, seriously you ALYSON never gave up on her,She will make you or someone a very loyal companion. the conditions she has had to endure fireworks, weather, not so nice residents, etc etc, give her a cuddle from me. trust me she has a lot to offer, once she is allowed to let her BARRIERS down.. get her out of kennels A.S.A.P. and finally thank you for looking after me so well xxx Ray.
Ali
Good news!!! We were able to catch Mocca in an improvised pen earlier this evening. She is doing well and is at the RSPCA Stubbington Ark for rehabilitation. A million thankyous to everyone who has helped make this outcome possible.
sylvie derrick
Not been in to check for a while Ali, due to other issues. Good to see that you are actually seeing and able to observe Mocca. Well done on all the hard work you are putting in.Last edited: 2016-02-04 09:37:19 by sylvie derrick
Ali
Just passed by Purrfectly Pets to stock-up on Mocca food, and collected the further £30 that has been donated. Thank you so much to everyone who is supporting Mocca this way, very very much appreciated. Saw her around 7am this morning at the feeding station, and there was another reported sighting from around 8am.
Ali
The collar issue doesn't seem to have gotten any worse, and there are no visible signs of sores developing - although obviously it's not possible to see up close or see the state of her skin under the collar. Mocca eats a fairly large bowl of food at night, plus dental chews, dried rabbit ears, fish chews, tripe and venison sausages, etc, so I don't think the collar is bothering her eating. She may have / had a virus that may have caused a GI issue, but v difficult to tell.
Hollieberry
Ali is Mocca's collar still ok ?
Ali
Mocca seems to be doing ok. She is eating nearly all the food at the main feeding station, mostly at night, although not much at the half way feeding station anymore. There was some diarrhea near that bowl earlier this week, so have kept her food fairly bland for a few days. Mocca does seem a bit more lethargic but is still interested in what is going on, and does not take flight at the first sign of people, so that must be good for her potential rehabilitation.
mumbles
Any update on this sweet girl just a bit worried as very little news on her this week.
Ali
Thanks for suggestions and offers of help. Mocca has eaten most of her food over the weekend. One reported sighting was of her looking lethargic. Hardly surprising that she's exhausted given the physical and nervous energy she's had to expend over 3+ months fending for herself.
mumbles
Any update Mocca after the weekend, I so hope she has a warm place to sleep as it is getting colder again
Al
If you need any help at all Ali then please don't hesitate to ask. Hope weekend going ok for Mocca ( at least warm again ). Been to P pets and told all fellow dog walkers about jar there
nicolapicola
Good that she has been back at the food. I'm also following Lizuca, a Romanian rescue lost whilst being transported to rescue place(these seems to happen distressingly often) since June in Norfolk. The local RSPCA or dog warden (forget which) had a trap to lend out there though no-one has yet managed to establish feeding stations, where the dog is hiding out or what her routes are due to hardly anyone on the ground helping the 2 or so volunteers (who are now going to set up a feeding station and are doing sterling work). Maybe the RSPCA or dog warden local to you can help with a trap???Last edited: 2016-01-23 10:36:40 by nicolapicola
Ali
Mocca ate all the food from both bowls overnight, and seemed in good spirits this morning. Hopefully we will have some large traps or a pen soon.
sarah
We got a big crate and put in the area enzo was staying in we did trails of chicken stock all leading to the trap. We hid the trap in a hedge, he found it the first night. He was also a very scared dog the camera showed him nervously going in just a bit to start with... It seems they apparently come out more at night.. So hope u get him it does sound like a trap is probably best way to get him.. We only put food at back of trap so he had to go in it to get the food. So hope u catch him poor boyx
Ali
Yes tinker is one of the words that has been used ... won't repeat the others!! When I throw her food (gravy bones, sausages, etc) she seems to have no particular trouble eating or swallowing, but having something tight around your throat can't be good. Food has been left in a third location nearby but the person leaving this food has checked and that was not eaten either. There could of course be other sites but, to keep her coming back, we have left really good stuff -- steak, venison, lamb, roast chicken, liver, kidneys, heart, tripe, salmon, sardines, etc -- so I'd be surprised if she was finding good stuff elsewhere ... but who knows?!
mumbles
Hi Ali, mocca is a little tinker you can see she is a street dog, I wonder if her not eating properly has anything to do with her collar or if she has found a new friend that is putting food out that you don't know about
Ali
Thanks Mallory'smum! This is what we have tried between November and January, and I think it is probably still our best bet with her. The problem is that Mocca goes into the pen and eats the food when no-one is around (filmed on the wildlife camera) but has an innate ability to work out when someone is sitting nearby in a car or van to pull the gate shut with string. We have done various over-nighters trying this method. Hopefully at the new feeding location we can try variations on this, but first need to see why she is not eating properly at the moment.
Mallory'smum
Hi Ali This is something I have seen on an American dog rescue show so dont know whether it would be feasible but they have erected metal panel fences that link together to make quite a large pen with a swing gate at one end-then put lots of food inside and then watch from a distance and when the dog goes to the food swing the gate shut.
Ali
Thanks for this information, Sarah. Glad that Enzo was caught. As I understand it, a crate was left with food in several different locations (Barton Farm and the garden where Mocca was hanging out) back in late October and early November, but Mocca didn't go near it or eat any of the food left there. There are various people who have dog traps but the general consensus is that she won't go in one. We'll need something bigger and less trap-like if we are going to coax her into something. Mocca has also not eaten all the food that has been left for the last few days and nights, which is very unusual, so not sure what is going on with her.
sarah

Hi I'm sorry to see u still haven't found your dog my friend list her dog enzo from spain and he was on run for 2 weeks after just arriving in uk. We took some professional advice and set up the food stations inside an unset trap from a dog warden which we borrowed..we left it unset for several days and setup a camera next to it. Enzo came to the trap each night and once he was confident going in it we set it and got him on night 3. Have u got a humane trap u can borrow. We had so many sightings but nobody was ever going to get near him by following.. I hope this helps good luck xxLast edited: 2016-01-21 20:56:08 by sarah
Ali
The housing development had a fence panel down in December, that has now been repaired so she does not have access. One problem with a tranquilizer is that she would bolt and then be loose on the streets of Weeke in a drugged state. Our chances of being able to follow and keep sight of her in such an open residential area are very low, even if we could find a vet that would do it. At the moment, the risk of the tranquilizer is greater than her everyday risks. If she became visibly injured or unwell, maybe that would change the stakes.
jeanette
Glad to see Mocca has been spotted after the cold night on Tuesday. She didn't eat the food I left her yesterday or today. Regards her sleeping area the dog warden said in December she was sleeping in a housing development in Bereweeke. When I have seen her she has headed up towards the Tennis Courts. Would there be a possibility of a tranquiliser gun from a vet ? If it is known where she regularly is could a vet not be engaged to wait for her and shoot her with a sedation dart ?
Ali
We are also concerned about the collar issue but have had conflicting feedback on how serious this might be, or at least how quickly it might cause problems. I did talk to K9 tracking a while back. Mocca's prospective owners had washed her blanket etc. Without such an item, tracking was not possible. We have left a small blanket in a sheltered location at the old feeding station. At best, Mocca has stepped on this to eat biscuits, so it will have negligible scent. The bigger issue is that even if we can track her, we would be no closer to actually catching her when we find her! We've been able to sit and throw food on very many occasions, with her coming 2-3 metres away, but no closer. I have been adding a natural calming tablet to her food morning and evening, at the advice of an animal behaviouralist, and Mocca does seem be a bit calmer, although difficult to tell. Many thanks for the offer of another donation Al, very kind. We have got to £65 towards the garden ornaments / statues. Nothing received from the Rescue Centre yet.

one very clever little girl to have stayed safe for so long,so pleased she is staying around the same area she must have found a good warm safe place to sleep, like all of you I worry about her collar, lets hope you manage to catch her very soon.
Mallory'smum
Just a thought I had before..could you not fit a field camera to the feeding station and then you could see which direction she heads at night and the next night get a tracker dog and follow the sent or just head in that direction yourself..she may be less wary at night and you may find it easier to catch her...anything must be worth a try at this stage. Worried about the Collar :(
Al
o.k.
Well done Ali. Will add some more to the money pot 2mrw. Do we have anything at all with Moccas scent on? say from the feeding station.... if so we could track her to where she may be sleeping with a bloodhound? ( sure you have thought of this )

Ali
There have been 3 sightings from this morning, and she has eaten some warm salmon I left out for her at 7am. No idea where she spends these bitterly cold nights, but we are at least trying to get lots of calories into her. One more bitterly cold night forecast then it is due to warm up a little.
jeanette
No sighting of Mocco this morning hopefully she is okay after the very cold night
Ali
Thanks Al and Jeanette. Not clear what happened yesterday evening or where she spent a frozen night, but Mocca was evidently back/around in Weeke by 6am today from the 3-4 sightings reported. She was back at the main feeding station this evening, so will have had a large bowl of warm steak and liver to help her get through another sub-zero night. I have spoken to people in the area near the feeding station and reminded everyone to not approach her, so as not to spook her further.
jeanette
I put a small tub of food out this morning where I have previously seen Mocco this morning at 6am. When I came back from walking my dog I spotted her from a distance at the food but she ran off. I went over to see how much she had eaten but she must have picked the tub up with her when she ran. I then returned to my home. On the way out to work she was again in the same spot but ran off down st Stephens road and up towards the tennis courts. My mobile is 07710968931 if I can be of help. Jeanette
Al
Oh dear. Perhaps she was was cold and wanted to get back to her shelter. (Lets hope she has one as was the coldest winter night ), Do let me know if I can help in anyway. Will look around the villages she has been at before later.
Ali
A set-back last night. Mocca did not eat all the food at the new feeding station. The only reason I know that she leaves food is if she has been badly scared, and what she is most scared of are people, so very likely that someone made a grab or tried to corner her. There were a lot of sightings of her yesterday morning and evening -- but each time she seems to build up her confidence in being around people, someone tries to grab her and she is frightened off again. In the past, Mocca has headed off to the villages when this has happened, so she might be seen there.Last edited: 2016-01-19 07:43:49 by Ali
Ali
Many thanks for this Jeanette. We have kept going with the half-way feeding point in case the new feeding station does not work out, just to keep options open, but the half-way location is not ideal. Can I get back to you (via this site?) if we need to shift spots? Very many thanks. I saw Mocca this morning and evening but always at a distance that she decides.Last edited: 2016-01-18 20:02:51 by Ali
jeanette
Ali if you need a new feeding station near to where I have seen her let me know
jeanette
I saw Mocco at 7.30 am in St St Stephens Road Winchester. I called her she looked at me then continued down the road. I saw her once before about the same time of day just before Xmas which I reported to the dog warden. On that occasion she headed up towards the back of the tennis courts close to where I was informed she was sleeping in new housing development. She still had her red collar on
Ali
Thanks Al. Mocca has been seen eating at the new feeding station, but we have learnt the hard way that good will and tolerance to having her around can run out pretty quickly. There is no Plan C feeding station location if she gets chased away from here. It's starting to look very very difficult to get the result everyone wants.
Al
Well done Ali - anything else I can do please ask. Al
Ali
Thanks for the moral support! The good news is that food has gone from the half-way feeding point and the new feeding station, the last x2 nights. The wildlife camera is still at the old feeding station to monitor if Mocca returns there (she does), but it is almost certain that it is Mocca eating the food at the new sites (she has certain habits/patterns that show when it is her!). The bad news is that recent video clips are showing her collar is getting very tight. As Mocca has grown (she was only 12 months when she got loose) and has put on weight, the collar has gotten tighter and tighter and is now visibly too tight, having worked up to just behind her ears. The local vets are worried that this will cause sores which could become infected, so her situation is becoming even more urgent :(Last edited: 2016-01-16 17:09:26 by Ali

Such a shame that the plans have to change but at least she is still in the area and appears to be keeping well and safe. Nobody can have worked harder than you Ali, your patience will pay off in the end.

This is so sad in this weather she needs her food to survive .Pathetic people
Heth
Let's just hop the Local Residents don't need help themselves for their pets in the future. How pathetic not to want to see this lovely girl safe. PEOPLE !!
mumbles
How sad as she has a routine, to start another feeding station is going to set catching her back as the trust will have to start again, most gardens have vermin, bird feeders are the main cause. Hope you find somewhere else very soon otherwise she may find another area
Ali
Some of the local residents have asked that the feeding station be discontinued. There is concern that the food is attracting vermin, although the wildlife camera has not shown any evidence of rats, and the fox has come very infrequently. A local cat has been bitten, which is most likely to be by another cat, but continuing the feeding station against the wishes of local residents is not an option, so we will try to set something up somewhere else ...
Unknown
She is a very clever girl, lets hope she gets caught soon xxx
Ali
Many thanks for the donation, very much appreciated. Mocca has been at the feeding station every night this week although at very different times, so no clear routine. She has an uncanny ability to know when there is someone around to operate the trap door on the pen, so we need to devise a remote-control mechanism and arrange for a vehicle to be parked there for multiple days/nights. This is in progress, but not likely before the bout of cold weather comes.
Al
Donation at P Pets. Any progress this week?
Ali
There is now a donations tin in Purrfectly Pets on Stoney Lane if anyone would like to contribute to replacing the damaged garden ornaments/statues and/or to the food bill. Mocca is eating about £10 of food a day. We are trying to keep her very well fed to help her get through winter and as she is on the go most of the night. Many thanks to everyone who has donated cash and food to-date, very much appreciated.

Hi Al, thanks very much for offering a donation, very kind. I spoke with the young woman who works in Purrfectly Pets (presume this is Meg?) and I'd assumed that she would let Gareth know about agreeing to this. We didn't discuss a box, just that people could drop off donations. I'll pass by and talk to the owner, so hopefully that option will be available from tomorrow. Otherwise could you give me a call on the numbers above, and we could discuss options -- many thanks! We have a wildlife camera at present, could we get back to you on this if a second one is needed? Thanks for the kind offer. Saw Mocca at the feeding station just before 6am today but still extremely wary of the pen when anyone is around.
Al
Hi Ali, Just been into p pets as per previous post. Gareth the owner does not know about the "donation" box ( was it set up with Meg last week? ) and there was not one to be seen I would like to give some money however - please advise best way to?. Also I have a night vision ( motion activated camera ) would that be useful?
Al
Hi, not added a comment for a while but keep an eye out continually for Mocca( was part of initial search) Going to P pets tomorrow and will make donation
Unknown
wow great news and a good start towards her getting caught and nice to know you are feeding the local cat and wildlife lol x
Ali
Thanks Nicola! Nice to see that Mocca has some wonderful supporters :) If bumpings needs sightings, I can confirm Mocca was at the feeding station around 1am this morning (as were a local cat beforehand and an urban fox later on ...)
nicolapicola
Administrators: Any chance of bumping this one up as Ali could do with some more donations to keep the owner of the garden where Mocca is being fed happy? I don't think anyone will notice as it is now several pages back.
Ali
Thank you so much Nicola, very much appreciated! Ali

Very nice talking to you Ali and hearing more about Mocca. Have just made donation so should appear in your account shortly.

Thanks so much, that is great news! For anyone local to Winchester, the pet shop on Stoney Lane (Purrfectly Pets) have agreed to take donations. Please just say that it is for the Mocca fund. If you could let me know you have left a donation, I can make sure it is collected and passed on. For donations via bank transfer, could you call me on the contact numbers above (Phone 1) and I can provide the details. Many, many thanks, Ali
nicolapicola
I can pay via PayPal or by bank transfer.
nicolapicola
I'd be happy to contribute to the garden ornament fund - how do I do so? (not on facebook, etc!).
Ali
Mocca was not around at the feeding station on new year's eve night, when the local fireworks were long and loud, but she was back at 2am last night (Friday) seen by a local resident and on the wildlife camera in the area. It is really important that no-one feeds Mocca elsewhere, as food and hunger are what get her into the pen where she can be caught. The estimated damage to the garden ornaments and statues [see below] is approximately £200. The Rescue Centre have agreed to pay £125. If there is anyone who would like to make a contribution please let me know. The elderly homeowner has been very accommodating of the dog and pen in his garden, so we don't want him to be out of pocket, and these garden statues were gifts from his children. Many thanksLast edited: 2016-01-02 12:14:58 by Ali

Recent sightings have been mainly in the area between Bereweeke Road and Stoney Lane. She is mainly out at night and in the early morning. Sightings from the last few days suggest the limp has improved although she looks a little sore on her front legs. Mocca has also chewed some garden ornaments causing a fair amount of damage and distress to the elderly homeowner.
sylvie derrick
Can you be more specific as to which area of Weeke, or would you rather not? It will be easier to keep eyes peeled, if a more precise area indicated. Thanks.

Several sightings of Mocca in Weeke over the last few days. She had a very slight limp on Monday evening (at the feeding station) and this was worse Tuesday evening. If anyone sees her, please check her gait, the limp is most noticeable when she is trotting. Thanks. Obviously a big concern, whether an injury or an infection.
Ali
Thanks for this info, Chris C. Great to get sightings. There have been several other reported sightings in the same area from Friday and Saturday evenings.
Chris C
Hey, I think I may have seen this dog a couple of times. First at the top of Kynegils road a couple of days ago and then this evening at the corner of St Stephens Road. Kynegils Rd backs onto the tennis courts and a care home so I wonder if she is feeding from their bins maybe? Good luck hope you find her!
Ali
Several sightings of Mocca in Weeke, Wednesday and Thursday, most recently around Stoney Lane
Ali
There was a sighting of Mocca on Monday early evening heading down St John's St (near the City mill). She ran across the road in front of a bus, which braked and missed her, but a horrible reminder of the dangers she faces every day she is loose. Mocca was last seen heading towards the Alresford Rd, out of town, so she may be around in Easton, Martyr Worthy and Itchen Abbas again
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Bumped again due to sighting, hopefully she will go back to where her feeding station was when previously in the area.
Renee
Mocco just spotted in Eastacre off Bereweeke Road. There is a care home there, so she might be after the bins.
Ali
Several sightings of Mocca in Weeke on Thursday night, later on rather than early evening
Ali
A few people have asked Mocca's age. I have checked with the rescue centre and she is now 14 months old.
Ali
A couple of sightings reported from Sunday and Tuesday morning around Weeke. Hopefully no-one will try and grab her as this has spooked Mocca in the past and then she moves to other areas.
Ali
A few more reported sightings, near Martyr Worthy on Friday, and around Weeke, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Please DO NOT APPROACH MOCCA, as she is getting more and more nervous of people. Please call the contact numbers above with any sightings. Thank you
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Great news that she is staying in the same area, if seen DO NOT TRY TO CATCH, call the numbers above to report the sighting ASAP
If in an area where she can be contained close gates etc.
Ali
Another sighting of Mocca in Itchen Abbas -- Tuesday, early morning.
Ali
Two confirmed sightings of Mocca in Itchen Abbas, 9-10pm and 2am Monday night, eating bread left out for the birds in gardens near the disused railway line
Ali
Thx Chris, makes up for the early morning nuisance phonecalls, presumably from someone who (wrongly) thinks I lost the dog ... Had a chat yesterday with someone doing tree work in Easton on Friday. He saw her broken lead and with the best of intentions tried three times to catch Mocca, the last of which involved lunging at her. This may have scared her away from Easton as there have been no reported sightings since that day. The same thing happened in Weeke the previous weekend, when someone cornered and tried to grab Mocca; she was by all accounts very agitated by that encounter and has not been seen again in Weeke since that day, as far as we know. Appreciate it is very natural to want to try and catch Mocca but it is really important that people do NOT APPROACH HER as this makes establishing her location and setting up a feeding station and pen almost impossible.
Chris
It isn't too far cross country from Weeke to Easton. She would have to cross Andover Road but then she could cross Worthy Road go across the fields and there is a tunnel under the A34 straight into woodland and fields to Easton. This is just one route she could be using. It's good to have a clearer photo of her. Ali has been working tirelessly leaflet dropping, keeping the feeding stations supplied and visiting the villages and talking to people. Mocca has a true friend indeed.Last edited: 2015-12-01 15:07:14 by Chris

It's quite a trek from Easton to Weeke, where she would have to go through built up areas, and open countryside, plus crossing busy roads.
Ali
Spoke to contractors in Easton again today and it turns out Mocca has been seen 5-6 times in Easton over the last 4+ weeks, i.e. *prior* to last week's sightings. Although there have been no reported sightings from Weeke or Easton since Friday night, this information would suggest she has a territory that she is working and has not (necessarily) moved on from this area. We really need to get information out to the villages between Winchester and Easton if anyone can leaflet and/or let their contacts know. ThanksLast edited: 2015-11-30 16:01:40 by Ali

DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Bumping due to the sightings again, it is possible that due to the bad weather that Mocco is laying low or she may now move back to her previous area where she had a food source.
Ali
There have been sightings of Mocca in Easton from Tuesday, Thursday and Friday last week. Friday she was around the village most of the day and evening with the last sighting around 11.30pm-midnight. I have leafleted the whole village yesterday and today but no reported sightings since the Friday night.
Ali
There have been a few leads from Easton, so I will follow up with these and get some posters up and leaflets distributed around that area today and tomorrow. It would be worth leafleting or at least putting up posters in Headbourne Worthy as well, I think, as that is probably her route eastwards. I have more leaflets to finish the main streeets in Weeke, as she has been away from the area and come back before. Any volunteers please give me a call to liaise! Thanks
Chris
What will be the next step Ali? No dog wardens at weekend. She's travelled a fair way.
Ali
I will let the Rescue Centre know, as they are her owners. The Dog Wardens are now coordinating this search and check these posts, but I will continue to liaise with them.

Bumped..TX for update...From respected helper Ali...would you be able to let owner know...as so many calls coming in...TX....
Ali
There were several reported sightings of Mocca near Easton around midday today (Friday). She was looking very nervous but not under-fed. The person who kindly called with these sightings took a much clearer photo which will be uploaded shortly.
Ali
I was writing a short note for Mocca's facebook page (link below), so thought it might be useful to include her background here: Mocca is a rescue dog from Spain. She was saved from (non-humane) euthanasia in the Pound there and brought to the UK by a Rescue Centre in Essex. Although very nervous, over a period of two months she settled-in and bonded with other dogs and some of the staff. Mocca was then re-homed to Winchester at the end of October, but on the second day was spooked and got loose. Since then (more than 4+ weeks ago) she has been on the streets and fending for herself. In Spain she would have been on the streets with other dogs, and would have known the local area, food sources, etc. Here, she is on her own, in an unfamiliar place and much colder climate. A group of volunteers are now desperately looking for her, in liaison with the Dog Wardens, Rescue Centre and DogLost site. All reported sightings are really useful so we can track her movements and set-up feeding stations with a view to using a pen to catch her. Please call urgently the contact numbers above and/or post on this DogLost site. Please do NOT approach Mocca. She is so so scared of people and approaching her will make her even more nervous. I have sat near her on six separate occasions following local sightings and fed her chicken, steak, etc. She is a beautiful, bright and resourceful dog. I don't think for one moment she wants to live like this alone on the streets, but her fear prevents her from coming close to people, having been badly treated and let down by so many. Through no fault of her own, Mocca has been through some terrible times and we would desperately like to give her a chance at rehabilitation and re-homing with people who can love and care for her. Thank you so much to everyone who is helping with this.
Ali
Thanks JenG, could you call me on the contact numbers so we could liaise on the streets still to be leafleted in Weeke? The Facebook page is now active (thanks to Cat) to spread information on Mocca and share the contact details: https://www.facebook.com/LostDogMoccaPointerCrossWinchester/?fref=ts
Please circulate widely. We are asking that people please continue to report sightings to the DogLost site as well as the contact numbers listed. Very many thanks
JenG
I live in Weeke and have been keeping an eye out but haven't seen her. Happy to distribute leaflets if you need extra people to help (we haven't had one through the door yet).
Ali
Thanks Chris, really really appreciated. No sighting since Sunday evening, and no food gone from the feeding station overnight.
Chris
I can distribute some leaflets.
Ali
There was a sighting of Mocca on Sunday afternoon (reported yesterday) off Bereweeke Road. Someone (with the best intentions) tried to corner and catch her but this will have scared her and made her even more wary of people. Please let your contacts know that sightings are needed but she should NOT be approached. There were no reported sightings from Monday following the bitterly cold night. Anyone interested in helping, there are 400+ more leaflets to be posted around Weeke. Thanks.
Ali
Thanks Poochpal and Tracey. We will keep this as the main coordinating site, but a Facebook page is also being set up to get the word out more around Winchester. Hopefully that FB page will be ready today and I'll post the details here. Thanks for offering to share it. About 300 leaflets went out yesterday and those have generated x3 sightings from Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening/nights, all in the Weeke area but different times and places. Thanks for everyone who has called, posted and/or made other helfpul suggestions :)
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
It is so much easier to follow if all the information is in one place, this page can be shared rather than a Facebook page as there are a lot of people who do mot use Facebook. Facebook pages are much more difficult to monitor.
Tracey Hyslop
Do you have a facebook group for Mocca? If so please advise the name of it so I can share it. Keeping fingers firmly crossed that Mocca is reunited with you soon. x
Ali
Thanks Katieemma, there has also been a second reported sighting in Taplings Rd about the same time last night, so it would be great if people can keep a look out for her. Mocca seems to be looking for food at night and early morning now.
Kaatieemma
Sadly I'm out all day, he come from the roundabout on fromond road downwards and we saw him while we were going into the top block. He ran across the road to the bus stop on the other side, up that little hill and turnt right into taplings road and then we didn't see where after that. Sorry I can't be of any more help that's all I saw :(
Ali
Hi Kaatieemma, thanks for this information, great to hear that she is still around the Weeke area. It would be good to get more info on where in Taplings Road and the direction she was headed, as we are trying to map her movements (to set up food stations). I am out leafleting most of the day, and will include Taplings Rd. but be great to chat later if possible? Thank you! Also many thanks to Poochpal and NickyB for the advice and best wishes -- much appreciated :)
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Thank you Kaatieemma, please can you call the numbers above or text the mobile number to give Ali all the details? If seen again don't try to follow, just text or call right away. Can you keep a copy of the numbers with you so that they are always to hand.
Kaatieemma
Hi. I live in Weeke and I think I have just seen this dog. Quite skinny couldn't tell if male or female, looks exactly like picture and had red collar and lead. Dog responded to a whistle but just froze wouldn't come any closer and we couldn't get any closer. Something made a noise and he sprinted off along taplings road my partner sprinted behind him being as quiet as possible and he just disappeared. Searched for him for ages and then couldn't find him again. I'm sorry but I hope this helps. This was about quarter past midnight tonight.
NickyB
keeping fingers crossed for you. our Romanian dog was lost by adopters on day of arrival - 3 wks later having been found 25 miles away she had been in Manchester dogs home for 11 days before they scanned her.........and because her adopter had not visited and/or made regular contact with them. do keep in touch with dog rescues for miles around just in case - like my absolutely terrified dog who bit her rescuer 6 times - she has been found and is in safe hands. these foreign dogs can be so so scared - having lived wild and being so abused by people.
Ali
There was another sighting of Mocca (her previous name) early yesterday morning in Weeke. No further reported sightings have been made but a small food station has been set-up there in the hope that she re-visits the area. Mocca was on a week's trial when she got loose and it has now been agreed that she will be returning to the Rescue Centre for (lengthy) rehabilitation if/when she is caught. Mocca is not only extremely nervous and now traumatised from her 3+ weeks on the run, but also crate-shy, presumably from her journey from Spain, so a standard dog trap is very unlikely to work. Fortunately Ray Dedicoat has kindly agreed to help with this case. I have also contacted K9 trackers regarding Mocca but not heard back yet. Thanks to those who provided these great contacts. The Winchester City Council dog wardens are now coordinating this search and should be contacted with any sightings. Also, please do not try and approach Mocca as she is now *extremely* wary of people and approaching her will scare her more. We are organising a leaflet drop etc in the Weeke area to ask for sightings to be reported. If anyone is free this Saturday morning and would like to help, please let me know. The weather is due to get colder from the end of this week, so this is getting even more urgent. Many thanks.
Pointerlady
Now would be a good time before it's too late to enlist a K9 tracker service http://www.k9tracker.co.uk/ask-for-help/
as you have a strong scent left in the garden she returned to several times. Any costs, I would hope should be covered by the rescue organisation Mocco came from?
Renee
Sadly Mocco has moved on again. She has not been seen since Thursday. We are back to square one.
ClaireC
Everything crossed. xx
Renee
I would like to ask the person who is feeding Mocco in the garden where she has taken up residence, to please stop doing so. We appreciate the effort to make sure that she does not move on, but the lady of the house is now becoming concerned about vermin being attracted to her property because the dog is being fed by 3 sets of people, so is no longer eating all the food left for her. The trap is to be erected at the house tomorrow and only the dog warden will be allowed access to the garden from now on. Thanks again for all the help and good wishes. I will confirm once we have Mocco safely home.

lots of smelly tripe and sardines .she will love it .....good luck xxx

Fantastic news that you are having regular sightings of Mocco at last. Let's hope she is ready to come home now. Bumping for sightings xx
Pointerlady
Great news. I hope she is seen there again soon. I did say in my last comment that all residents should be aware. If this lady had known from the outset she could have called several days back. Posters are never enough, cold canvassing or leaflet drops in suburban areas are much better.
mumbles
Fantastic Renee lets hope Mocco has had enough of her venture and is ready to come home, if I can help in any way please let me know, fingers crossed for a happy return
Renee
I have just received a phone call from a lady in Weeke, who has seen Mocco in her back garden for a few days now, but she did not realise that the dog was lost. She has agreed to put food down for the dog in the hope of enticing her so that she can be trapped in the garden. What fantastic news! I will inform the dog warden in the morning, and with some luck, we might have Mocco home soon.
Al
Good to meet you all this am although we were not lucky. A friend was going to check all the farmers buildings at B Farm this morning with his permission I hasten to add.Do stay in touch with the dog warden and have you approached the MOD? the site entrance in Andover Road is a short cut ( for a dog ) to Littleton where she has been seen before. I will keep looking ( littleton this p.m )
Ali
One other quick thought ... I don't think she has become fully feral as there were two sightings on Tuesday/Wednesday this week when she was hanging around groups of builders: (i) the sighting on Stoney Lane when she got near enough for some builders to try and give her sandwiches; (ii) another at the Barton Farm / NFU buildings, where workmen were erecting fences and a local person walking their own dog, saw her and thought she was the builders' dog (and only realised later she was the missing dog). So I guess Mocco is desperate / hungry / isolated enough that she might be willing to approach non-threatening groups of people. Anyway, just a thought.
Renee
My heartfelt thanks to all those lovely people who turned out this morning in such filthy weather to help me look for Mocco. I think we can safely assume that she has left the Barton Farm area. The last confirmed sighting of her was in Andover Road, so she can now be absolutely anywhere.
mumbles
I am not going to be able to join up with you all after all. hope a sighting is made and with luck your heat gun Renee will help. Good luck all, be thinking of you
sylvie derrick
The earlier you can get there the better. When an animal becomes feral they do go to ground and can emerge early morning and late evening. What you are looking for is a sighting, just don't overwhelm her. There are plenty of rabbits in these fields, if she is used to living on her wits then catching food, scavenging, will not be a problem. Read my advice earlier on.Nell Parry, who also sighted her the same day and time as myself, has not had any sightings. Nell is on Wellhouse Lane, and walks multiple dogs at Barton Farm.. Renee Mocco is likely to still be wearing the flexi lead which could be caught up. I have also put Mocco on Street Life for Winchester. It wasnt in the Hampshire Chronicle. Due to difficulties it is unlikely that I can come up to Barton Farm but if I did it would be the Courtney Road end, as that's all my oldest dog can manage.
Ali
David and I will be there as soon after 8.30am as possible (with Percy and Coco, white/tan and brown spaniels). I'll wear a purple rainjacket. Great news about the heat gun Renee. See you then.
Renee
I will be there from 8.30. I wear a Mercedes baseball cap with a Lewis Hamilton logo and drive a metallic blue VW Golf with an SA flag on the back. I also have the use of a heat gun, so will be able to search hedgerows for any signs of body heat. It will be great to meet all you selfless dog-lovers and anonymous helpers!
Al
8.45 fine at intersect . can do to 9.30
Ali
oops, didn't get these suggestions until I had posted the 9am suggestion. Al would 8.45am at the fields intersection work (just to avoid waiting near the road)? Mumbles we could see you at the andover road entrance around 10am (can you give us some identifying clues)? Don't think there have been any reported sightings since Wednesday morning in Weeke.
Ali
I need to give the detail to a couple of friends, so shall we say 9am at the intersection of the fields where the tall row of trees starts (one field in from the car parking area on Andover Road, and diagonally opposite the corner of the field where the railway underpass is)? Hope that makes sense.

Suggest we all bring dog food. Any tips or suggestions from the dog-experts welcome too!
Al
Hi
Being selfish, I would like to tie it in with my morning dog walk so I will be at the andover road entrance at 8.30. Al ( and Barney ( goldie )
mumbles
Happy to come along any time after 10am need to take my lad out first, let me know where as not too sure of the area. has she been seen at all today?
Ali
Anyone want to suggest a time and place to meet and divide up the fields?
Renee
I will be there as well. I have an appointment in the afternoon, but will help in the morning.
Al
Happy to do this
Ali
Hi, spoke with a friend who has a tracking background and he thought it was just as likely that Mocco has gone to ground, after a week of expending a lot of nervous and physical energy trying to find food etc in the first week (hence all the sightings). Given her exhaustion and the wet weather, she's possibly taken cover somewhere to conserve energy, but won't survive that long in such a state. Is anyone interested in a thorough scout of Barton Farm this Saturday morning, as that seems to be where she has most often been cited?
Ali
Hi Renee, checked with a friend in the police here and was advised that such enquiries should be made to the Dog Wardens in the first instance as this is considered a Council matter. If the Wardens have no information, the police can then be contacted and will send a message to the highways unit asking for any reported incidents in the area. Hope that helps.
Renee
It is very disappointing to report that there have been no sightings today either. I called the Hampshire Constabulary to ascertain whether there had been reports of a dog being run over - apparently I am not allowed to have that information because of 'data protection'. I did point out that the dog would not have any objections to her data being released, but to no avail.
Renee
Hi Ali. I did notice that; maybe it will be in the Hampshire Chronicle?
Ali
Hi Renee, not sure that it made it into today's News Extra - unless there is a later edition? http://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/Launch.aspx?PBID=bd080a20-39f4-4199-aa9c-ceb8a725156a
Renee
There were no reported sightings of Mocco yesterday and the feeding station is untouched. There is going to be an article in today's News Extra which will hopefully generate some more publicity
sylvie derrick
If anyone does sight her then the first thing is to call the numbers given. Trying to grab her will not work. If you sight her follow at a distance so that you can pinpoint her location. Secondly if you do have food on you don't approach her, get close to the ground, side on to her not making eye contact. Hold your hand out towards her, not looking at her, with the food. Possibly toss food in her direction. It is highly unlikely that she will come to you but it is an attempt to prevent her travelling further away from the area she is spotted until owners/backup arrives. There are many scenarios that could be covered as it cannot be predicted how or where she will be sighted. The main aim is not to freak her further. The last dog I was involved in searching for, in the same area, was eventually cornered after a week trying to raid bins at a Tesco Express. So she could turn up anywhere when hunger really kicks in.Last edited: 2015-11-03 23:19:27 by sylvie derrick

Skywalker99 I have already given Renee Ray Dedicoat's contact number. In order to trap you have to get the dog feeding regularly in a particular place, and once the trap is down it has to be padlocked to something suitable and watched 24/7.
Pointerlady
As she is in a highly populated area, has anyone knocked door to door to make ALL local residents aware. She will be rummaging in bins by now if she hasn't eaten a proper meal for a week. My experience of dogs on the run has taught me that even when they see someone they know they are unlikely to approach as they are now traumatised. Might be better to start a feeding station with an observer 24/7 asap before she moves on to another area.
Ali
Mocco was seen today (Tuesday) near the carpet shop in Stoney Lane, sometime around 11.15am. The workmen in the area tried to tempt her over with sandwiches but she was too scared. It sounds like food stations are a good idea but only a well-positioned trap might catch her, as no-one can get near her even when she is sighted.
Skywalker99
might be worth contacting Ray dedicoat www.raydedicoat.com, he has lots of experience trapping stray dogs,
Renee
We are setting up a feeding station in the hope that she will be attracted to it. She has been without food for a week now unless she has managed to scavenge somewhere. Al, she is not interested in other dogs, sadly.
Also, another lady who has sighted her on a few occasions has reported that she jumps over hedgerows, which might make the task of catching her more difficult yet.

There have been no sightings of Mocco today at all.
mumbles
Good idea Al, I am just by Barton Farm and would be happy to join in, had a good look around Farley today but no sign, so hope she is home soon
Al
Based just up the road from Barton Farm - been looking out for days too for her. Just a thought would it be worth a crowd of us being out one day at the same time ( i.e in all the areas she has been seen in? ) Also does she like other dogs ? is she likely to come and say hello to other dogs? Let me know?
DogLostOwl
Renee, you need to set up a feeding station if you can pinpoint an area she has been visiting regularly, and there is no harm in doing a barbecue to attract her.
Renee
Thank you Sylvie! Yesterday was so frustrating as I was literally seconds behind her, but did not spot her myself. As you say, she does seem to be heading back to Barton Farm and this might be our best chance of catching her. I have not heard of any sightings yet this morning.
sylvie derrick
I believe that a trap may be the only answer, or driving into an enclosed space. I shall go up there tomorrow with my girls, I feel lucky.Last edited: 2015-11-02 23:47:52 by sylvie derrick

There have apparently been quite a few sightings around Barton Farm. This seems to be the area that she returns to. Being a street dog she will know how to live on her wits. It doesn't take long for dogs to go feral, therefore she will be easily spooked. Having spoken to her owner it was traffic that spooked her in the first instance. She still had her flexi lead on when I saw her Wednesday morning although it didn't impede her in anyway.
ClaireC
If she doesnt respond to new name why not use her old one if there was one! Just thinking if anybody is succesful in getting near.

I called the number and it turns out that Renee is in fact the owner.
She was a few minutes from the last sighting. I have given her Ray Dedicoat's contact details as a trap may be needed.

I believe I was one of the first people to spot this dog at about 8.40 am as I was heading from Kings Worthy towards the Andover Road, i Wellhouse Lane, near Wellhouse Farm. She shot out of the fields in front of me. I did an emergency stop and flagged other cars down as she ran towards me down the middle of the road. She then veered off to the right across the field towards Down Farm Lane and the A34. I contacted Nell Parry in Wellhouse Farm, as I was going to an urgent doctors appointment. Nell said she would go and look for her. She appeared to be wearing a red collar and had a red short lead trailing. I can be contacted on 07803927860 if further information required concerning the exactly way she went. She appeared stressed and disorientated.Last edited: 2015-10-31 23:29:23 by sylvie derrick

have sent the link to We are Winchester FB page
Sammie
Have asked Friends in that area to share. I hope the Spanish rescue are giving plenty of advice? If not the South West team are experienced in missing rescue dogs and can send advice. Please post if this is required although I would expect the rescue to be advising you in the first place as they know the dog. Most rescue dogs, however scared often stay close by. Only a few will bolt completely out of the area.
Jot cotswolds
How did she get loose..was she spooked by something? Always a good idea to use a harness plus lead on rescue dogs..safer and secure until the dog has bonded..which can take weeks..or months. Food will be the answer here and a lot of patience..set up a feeding station and trap
