I hope Vito is enjoying life with his family one year on since he was found. x
LindaT
Hope that all is going well with Vito ... any more news on his elbow?
ClaireC
Thanks Gilly for update. Well done xx
Millys Mum
Gilly, thanks for the latest news on lovely Vito as I had been wondering how he's doing. So pleased that Perry and Vito have each other - sounds like a marriage made in heaven. Fingers crossed that his investigations go well.
LindaT
Thanks for the update GillyP, so glad to read that Vito continues to do well, fingers X`d that the scan will show things to be settling down, or at the very least that his elbow is remaining stable:-)
Unknown
Wonderful to hear GillyP that Vito is now doing well and good to hear he now has a forever home ...Have a wonderful life lovely Lad xxx

Think the next plan is a scan. As you know not a cheap thing. But funds are there thanks to all the kind people on doglost. Xx

Brilliant news. Thanks for thr update GillyP

Sorry for the delay in updating. Vito is blooming with Perry and as Perry is an older gentleman there is not much racing around. Vito is back to the vets this month so fingers crossed. xx

Great update. Enjoy Vito a better life. Xx

So pleased to hear Vito is to be adopted by his foster family. Wishing Vito and his new family all the best.
LindaT
Thank you so much for the update GillyP ... what a lovely outcome that Vito is going to be staying with his foster family! The best Christmas present for Vito. My Boxer has a hip problem and her usual meds ( Carprieve ) were not easing the lameness or discomfort so she has been taking CIMALGEX for some weeks and it has made a huge, huge difference, she has no side-effects .. it is a stronger anti-inflammatory one a day tablet ... and you wouldn`t know she had arthritis at all!. Not sure if this info is of any help in Vito`s case but may be worth considering if he has to wait for surgery anyway.
Unknown
Gillyp. thank you for the update. so pleased Perry wants to adopt him
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Thanks for update Gillyp. So pleased he has a loving forever home even with his problems. I hated the thought that because he wasn't 100% fit he would be languishing in Kennels. At least if he has surgery he'll be able to enjoy a proper dogs life when he recovers. Don't you just love failed fosterers. If anymore money is needed please let us know. Big X for Vito
Unknown
Perry, his foster dad now wants to adopt him which is lovely. Perry reports that he has had a couple of episodes where he has random moments of discomfort which is why a vet that has given a second opinion, thinks he will need surgery although there is not consistent lameness.  He is on  anti-inflammatory tablets and pain killers. xxx

Sorry for not updating sooner. I will be getting a progress report on Vito today. So will update asap. Xx

Hello again! I will pass everything onto cathy who is dealing. Nightmare x
Millys Mum
Me again! I've just looked up Gary Clayton Jones and he now 'attached' to a vets based in Clerkenwell, London EC1 and so he's still practising and, even better, he's an authority on elbow dysplasia! This is what his profile says:

Gary Clayton Jones
BVetMed, DVR,DSAO, FRCVS
Orthopaedics

Gary has worked in private practice in Kent and London since 1991, following a career at the Royal Veterinary College where he was appointed Director of the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals.

He is a scrutineer for BVA/KC Hip and Elbow Dysplasia scheme. He is an RCVS registered specialist in both his disciplines. He recently received a Fellowship from the RCVS.

He's also a very pleasant and modest man!
Millys Mum
When one of our cats broke her leg, our vet just sent her x-rays to a specialist orthopaedic vet (once again it was Gary Clayton-Jones) and so we didn't even have to take her anywhere else. Our vet was a very experienced 'old-school' hands on vet who knew his stuff but he just wanted a second opinion before he proceeded with the surgery (which was a success). And so, perhaps the same could happen with Vito's x-rays. Since Vito appears to live in the Luton area, perhaps the Royal Veterinary College at Potters Bar could advise, if the x-rays could be sent to them. As always, fingers crossed for 'our' gorgeous, sweet and adorable Vito.
Unknown
His original vet diagnosed the dysplasia so when he went into rescue details were passed to Abingdon along with his file. They are not saying it isn't going to be operated on they want to see how he gets on for another period of time. If another referral is necessary it will happen. I am so frustrated that it didn't happen as we all did our bit in getting him to this stage. If however the operation isn't needed refunds will be given. I just hope the right decision is made
Holly
Yes wouldn't a second opinion be helpful, it couldn't hurt to just give it a go maybe
trixie
I am going to be very blunt but maybe saying what others are thinking.
With all the donations and Vito being a dog from a rescue this seems to be a nice little extended earner for the vet. Why did the vet make a specific diagnoses leading to an operation only for the diagnosis to be changed at the last moment. Are we now back to square one where pain killers are administered followed by a lets wait and see followed by a scan ££££. Maybe as suggested by another poster it could be worth taking Vito to another Vet for a second opinion because the most important issue here is Vito
Ellie
It would be nice to think that Vito doesn't need an op. Love the extra photo, he looks very thoughtful. Maybe he's thinking the same, or is he just waiting for someone to throw his ball! Bless him!
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Perhaps if Vito has lost weight and has rested ( he lived with other dogs ) there isn't such a strain on his joints and that could account for his improvement. Sounds like his foster carer is doing something right. Thank you
Millys Mum
That's interesting but, presumably could also be good news??? I'm wondering if his recent good care, careful exercise and decent food may have helped his condition. Our much-loved Rottie girl Milly who we recently lost to cancer injured her hind leg and couldn't weight bear and it appeared to be a cruciate ligament injury. She wasn't good with vets and, as an older Rottie, a big operation wasn't the best option for her and so we went for Plan B instead. We rested her 'big time' for many weeks / months and only allowed her the shortest of walks. When she had to be left (always for no more than a couple of hours) we left her in a back room, with the door closed and a radio on for company (she was also never allowed to rush to the front door for the Postie or milkman). It was very many weeks later that we took her on her favourite walk on our nearby Common but always used a long sturdy (Pet Step) ramp. Right from the outset, we started her on Yumove (from Lintbells) and slowly, slowly she made a full recovery from her leg injury, sadly only to be taken from us with cancer. My point being, that as a young dog, Vito may also recover spontaneously, although none of our dogs (or those belonging to our friends) have ever been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia and so I'm definitely not an expert! Just wishing gorgeous, big Vito the best treatment and the best possible outcome. Perhaps I shouldn't interfere but am also wondering whether the elbow x-rays should be viewed / read by a specialist orthopaedic veterinary surgeon. We knew of a brilliant orthopaedic surgeon called Gary Clayton-Jones based in Tenterten (Kent) but he may not still be practising. If there is any uncertainty, it might just be worth a second opinion but, as I say, I don't want to poke my nose in where it isn't needed!Last edited: 2015-11-30 21:11:24 by Millys Mum
LindaT
Disappointing, hopefully Vito will remain painfree and will at some point get whatever treatment he needs to ensure he will enjoy life to the full, it would be good if that didn't mean surgery but if he needs the op then I hope funds will be enough to pay for a scan on top of everything else, and he can get sorted asap... meanwhile enjoy tucking into your dinner, Vito :-)
Unknown
OK well the operation didn't happen today. Vet said it could be low grade dysplasia so wants to put back on pain killers for another 4 weeks as he wasn't showing lameness today. This said, the operation could still happen in 4 weeks but will scan then. NOT HAPPY

Good Luck for Monday to lovely Vito XX
Ollie's Mum
Apologies I need new glasses. Yes I did donate to Moulton branch of vets.
Just tried to make another donation and poor lady didn't know about Vito or how to take the donation as she only works part time. As I am off to work i have arranged to ring her tomorrow.
GillyP you have done a fantastic job for Vito. Who knows what May have happened to him without you.
Good luck for Monday Vito and then hopefully the start of a better life.
LindaT
Just remembered that Mad Dog Rescue (& the vet surgery) told me the rescue Mad Dog will be paying part of this quote for the op, so hopefully with the PayPal amount added there will be enough to cover it all after all :-)
Unknown
Okay GillyP Thanks
Unknown
The PayPal total has not been added yet but will keep you updated. I think it depends janiejewel1649 as one girl was part time and didn't know about him.
Unknown
When I first phoned to donate towards Vito`s op, I was told that they could not do so unless the vet was there? Managed to donate on another day No idea why.
LindaT
Thanks GillyP ... I do hope enough will be raised, the amount you've updated us is still only just over a quarter of what is needed.

I also am confused as I phoned a donation of £20 direct to vet surgery but mine was Morden vets. Will check my statement. Hopefully they are going to the right place for Vito as I was going to make another donation today.Last edited: 2015-11-27 08:38:47 by Ollie's Mum
LindaT
I am a little confused as I phoned the specialist vet a couple of weeks ago and also Mad Dog Rescue and was told to send my donation cheque directly to the surgery doing the operation, which was Abington Park Vets, Moulton Holcot Centre, Pitsford Road, Moulton, Northampton, NN3 7RR tel: 01604 644171 They said they were not able to take donations over the phone. I believe the vet has other surgeries but it will be less confusing if the donations are sent to the correct address? Gilly, you said on 9 Nov you were sending over £400 to the vets and there have been other donations mentioned, I sent £30 so the account should be more than the £400 you`ve mentioned yesterday which makes me wonder if funds are going into different places and not being added together? Good Luck to Vito, I do hope his operation won`t be held up waiting for more funds :-( Last edited: 2015-11-27 06:55:05 by LindaT

Perhaps if Noel was contacted simply to get a quote and/or advice and was made aware of this poor dogs situation and was keen to help he could speak to the pound himself ... he is well known and it might get Vimto released to his care? I would be willing to make a donation towards the cost.
labradorloopy
I would be happy to contact Noel Fitzpatrick on Vito's behalf if this is thought the best way forward. Let me know.
Millys Mum
labradorloopy - I'd had the same thought as you about Noel Fitzpatrick (see my final sentence of yesterday's post). He is such a caring and a genuine softie that I really do think it would be worth an ask. I'm sure he would help if he can. Awaiting Vito's next update. I also don't understand the Pound's comment about the Pound not thinking it fair for Vito to be on pain killers for 3 weeks. I know that we don't know the full story... but still find it very odd. As/when Vito has surgery, he certainly needs an experienced orthopaedic vet used to carrying out surgery on large breeds and that's why I think that Noel is the man! I've seen the results of his groundbreaking surgery at the last two DogFests and he is just brilliant.
Unknown
Update soon xx
labradorloopy
Could you contact Noel Fitzpatrick , 'Supervet' and explain the situation. I know he has waived his fees in similar situations in the past, or may be able to do it at cost. He is an amazing man.
Unknown
Carol can you e mail me. Gillianlouisepacker@gmail.com
Unknown
Ladies, all I can say is its complicated. I will update you with anything I know as soon as possible. You are all the best xxx
BorderCol
Why is it not fair to keep him on pain relief while he loses weight? He looks far too fat to be in good condition for immediate surgery. Does the only pain relief have serious side effects?
NessaP
This poor dog has already been so badly let down by its owners. Will happily donate. I'm shocked at how people treat their animals, truly heartbreaking stories on here. If parents behaved like this with their children the law would be slapping child protection orders on them left, right and centre, not thinking about euphanising their children. Sadder still so many animals just not being supervised and thus lost or worse still passing to the Rainbow Bridge, again the laws in this country would be enforced if it were parents and their children. What a cruel and uncaring world we live in. Please let me know if there is anything, and I mean anything, that I can do to help this dog so badly let down by our society.Last edited: 2015-10-30 13:04:38 by NessaP

Thanks for the update. Could you not try the "Cinnamon Trust or the "Oldies Club"? I know they both have foster carers. though I think the "Oldies Club" take dogs from aroumd seven years of age. They have foster carers who look after poorly dogs who may be deaf, suffering from arthritis etc. These two organizations may b e able to help or give advice; just a thought
Ollie's Mum
Could the rescue not take him out of the pound and put him into foster until a space is available?
I would offer to foster him for them if he was ok with other dogs.
karenlr
hi so where do we donate?
Unknown
OK so…… The rescue cannot take for 3 weeks and the pound deem it not fair to have him on pain meds for 3 weeks (better than being with the angels in my book), so if we can raise funds for the operation we can get ithe op done and get him into foster under the offering rescue RBU. So, here’s the shocker, having gone on the cost of dogs that have had similar ops, the cost will be between £1,500 and £2,000. We have to get the pound to agree to this but if they do that’s what the situation will be. And breathe……….

This is his page on Jacobs pound dogs (they call him Reggie)

Poor, poor gorgeous Vito. How could his owners reject him so cruelly. I can also make a donation towards his treatment but I must say, I do agree with Jayelle about first trying non surgical management of his elbow dysplasia. Our dealy departed Rottie girl somehow injured her cruciate, aged 9. She wasn't keen on vets and being messed around with and so we rested her for several (many!) weeks. I also gave her Yumove (made by Lintbells). When she was left alone, which wasn't very often, I used to put her in a back room with a radio on and the curtains partially closed. Milly was a very good guard dog and so I couldn't risk someone ringing on our doorbell whilst we were out and her running to the door to carry out her guarding duties (there's always people ringing on our doorbell trying to sell us all sorts of things and 'services' which we don't need!). She was only allowed short on-lead walks (just up the road and back and no more than 10-15 minutes) and initially it was just into our garden for her ablutions but ALWAYS on a lead. But it paid off and Milly's lameness was eventually cured. After that we were always extremely careful. She was NEVER allowed to jump in or out our estate car and we ALWAYS used a nice long sturdy, folding Pet Step ramp. As I say, eventually she got better and so it's possible that this non-invasive treatment (as well as a strict but filling and nutritious diet) might also work for Vito. Alternatively, if surgery is absolutely necessary, I wonder if Noel Fitzpatrick (the so-called Supervet) might take Vito on at a reduced rate. Anyone know him?!Last edited: 2015-10-29 19:47:45 by Millys Mum

Have done a quick bit of research on the Internet regarding the elbow dysplasia. Weight management is important as a management strategy. This boy looks overweight so am just wondering whether time in a suitable rescue to lose weight might either make surgery unnecessary or at least reduce the recovery time if he still needs it.

So can this poor dog only go to Rescue and not for adoption as I think I may know a lovely couple who are looking to adopt another American Bulldog?

I will make a substantial donation towards the cost of his operation. I hope the kennels will give this lovely looking boy a chance - I'm sure they care about his welfare.

He got offered space but the pound said no. Do they actually want him to die. If he could be fostered no problem but they say no

As the pound will only work with certain rescues, is there anyway you can persuade the original owner to get him out of the pound then sign him over to you so you can then work with more rescues to find him a place. - so hope you can find him somewhere

This poor lad is running out of time. Needs rescue space now. Owner collected the female and left him. Has elbow dysplasia so needs an opportunity. Funds can be raised. Pound will only let him go to certain rescue.

This is his story. Any offers let me know and I will pass it on.

PLEASE MEET VITO, He has 7 DAYS MAYBE MORE TO FIND A SPACE I am unable to place him and the pound will only work with certain rescues. I can only send offers to the pound if he is lucky enough to get one then we can only pray WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW he has elbow displacia (this is a FACT - he is registered with my poundies vet), he does need surgery, PLEASE GOD DON'T LET THAT BE THE END OF HIS LIFE!!!! He is 4 years old. He has lived with intact female and male dogs ( 2 that I am aware of). I have been trying to place him for 2 weeks via his owner but then the owner left at a friends who left him in the garden, he then escaped with a female dog DW picked up and ended up in the pound. She came and got the bitch but he was left. He is allegedly vaccinated but I have no proof. Not neutered and has been referred to specialist but owner didn't take him. I have vet history as that is how I know about him, she had asked vet to put to sleep :-(Last edited: 2015-10-28 18:57:14
