Just to update on the story of Jeddah. We unfortunatly never found him, which was sad. But we would like to thank everyone for there efforts in searching. The story is sad but we did adopt another saluki in need of a home. Phil and Tracey Jeddah's owners.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi destiny starbuck, that comment was just general, just thinking aloud really, not aimed at you, I know you live there! My boy Max, you are quite right, now is the time to refresh and and renew the postering campaign as we are getting into the tourist season with more people about who may spot him. The found dog you mention is actually a bitch, so not Jeddah. People are still looking out for Jeddah everywhere, but he is in such a large rural area that it is difficult. Let's hope for a sighting soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The Salisbury Warden has phoned to tell me that a tan Lurcher who is very skinny went missing in Wilton on the 19th Feb, it would seem far more likely that this is that dog rather than Jeddah. Back to square one. Assuming it is not Jeddah there has not been one good sighting in three and a half weeks.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

PS. I showed the last lady who saw him (who was helping me look for him) a picture of Jeddah, she said it looks just like him. Wilton is only 20 odd miles from where I lost him, he could travel that distance easily.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I spoke to the Salisbury dog warden today, loads of people saw a saluki yesterday, many tried to get him to go into thier cars but each time he just ran off. He was seen between Salisbury race Course and Wilton between about 2pm and 3.30pm. I still do not know if this is Jeddah, but I have nothing else to go on. I have asked the warden to call me if there are any other sightings. He is very thin and looked totally lost and out of place.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

just another thought if this is jeddah. He is probably quite wild now and will need a cage to catch him. N. forest dog warden offered a trap which you may need. jeddah is now possible out of new forest area. therefore a new trap should be found or check to see if nf warden will still lend. Last thing you need is a v good sighting and no trap then wasting time trying to locate one. Night vision goggles would also be usefull on this terrain. Army cover salisbury plain and train on it could contact them too. Apparently a family still live at wilton house i'm sure they would helpLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

so can i clarify good possible sighting in Wilton. If so should inform wilton house estate as they have huge grounds and also the big agricultural auction place near to wilton house. God just googled earth wilton.Wilton is surrounded by country side for milies and miles salisbury plain & cranborne chase. If this is a really good sighting wilton need to be flooded asap with posters thats wiltshie council it'll take them ages to complain about posters. It will be really inmportant to know which way he is heading if he leaves wilton. I have delt with dog warden in warminster a few times will be happy to make a call to him again if jeddah goes out that way. I don't want to interfere but i'm happy to help just let me know if i can Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Todays update, I had a message on my phone from Hyde Garden Centre saying a stray dog was heading towards Salisbury and was picked up by the RSPCA, we called the RSPCA and they do not pick dogs up, only the dog wardens do, I will go to Hyde tommorow and try to get better information. I called the New Forest dog warden they have not picked anything up, I also called the Salisbury dog warden there have been many sightings of a Saluki loose in the Woodford valley north of Salisbury up to the A303 (a vast area), they will keep me informed. I agree with Sherlock Bones - without posters we are completely stuffed. With so few sightings the more info that can be spread around the better. Cannot understand why the NF District Council is being so obstructive. Know that the Forestry Commission hate posters on the Forest and have been taking them down but then we have been going round and putting them up again! We find that handing out A5 copies of the poster to people and riders we meet while walking and also putting them through letterboxes of local houses is also a good way of spreading the word.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Stop putting up posters??? Why??! Good god.. perhaps the Dog Warden for the area can have a word? Without posters we're stuffed... however please do be careful where you place them and make sure it isn't on say walls/fences belonging to the Local Authority. If you have consent from shop owners etc etc etc poster away! They can't stop you when you have consent.... perhaps the person asking you to stop could put a poster in their car, give you a helping hand??!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have received a call from the New Forest Council politely asking us to stop putting up posters. I also received a phone call today from a lady who said she saw Jeddah last night on the road by the Red Shoot (nr Ibsley). I went up their today and a boxer was running around (he lives there) but from a distance he did look like Jeddah (same colour) so I do not know whether this is a proper sighting or not, I will go up there tonight in case. Rosshound - sorry not to reply earlier - it's a bit late but we would be grateful if you could check again with the local vets (and a bit further afield in case he's travelled) that they're aware of Jeddah. Husband and I walked from Royal Oak at Fritham to Rangers Cottage and back (using a circular route) put up posters, scanned with binoculars and asked people. About 50% of people already know about Jeddah - I think the best thing owners can do is spend as much time in the area as possible, postering and asking people. It is a huge area and there are plenty of places to shelter, ample water and rabbits/dustbins/picnic remains galore. As he is microchipped, if he is brought in to local vet they will automatically scan him. Which way did owners walk the day they lost him - did they go along Hampton Ridge from Fritham to Frogham?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Would like to suggest that you contact both the specialist dog papers. Many a dog has been reunited thanks to people who have become aware of a missing dog this way. "Our Dogs" is 0870 731 6500 "Dog World" is 01233 621877 They will put details in without charge. Deadline, I think, is Monday morning. Possibly could e-mail(addresses on websites)Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Today I have done Godshill Cricket Ground and Ashley Walk up to Pitts Wood and down to Must Thorns Bottom - the only poster I saw was one at the Cricket Ground. I met some walkers who going along to Leaden Hall and beyond so gave them a poster and another poster to some people out riding who came from Arniss Riding School - they did know about Jeddah and have been keeping they eyes open. I've also done the pet shop in Green Lane, Fordingbridge I won't be out on the Forest at the Weekend but will walk around Burgate Manor Farm and the Avon Valley Path.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry, can't believe this one has passed me by! Can you let me know asap if all local vets have been notified - if not I can do tomorrow morning (Saturday), but after that I'm on holiday. I've done posters for the 3 Seadown surgeries and e-mailed all staff, especially vets on visits. Other people have come up with this idea, but I think it's great - make up business card size details/posters to hand out so that dog walkers can have them in their pockets at all times - I carry a lot of "useful items" in my pockets when walking, but a pen isn't one of them, and I would guess time is crucial should this lovely boy be sighted. Stay safe. SueXXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v670/Pandii/Feb7thNewForestWalk006.jpg This is the size of the problem - this is Hampton Ridge from the Frogham (Abbottswell end) which is the SP6 postcode - Fritham is in the SO43 postcode and I saw no posters out yesterday, except for the one inside the pub.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've just been up to Fritham and walked along Fritham Plain, through to Rakes Brakes Bottom and into Holly Hatch Inclosure coming out at the Cottage, up along Ragged Boys Hill and back skirting the edge of Amberwood Inclosure and back along the plain. The only poster I saw was one in the Royal Oak at Fritham - whether they've been blown away I don't know, but some more need to be put out. I can't get back up that way until next week, although do walk Hampton Ridge area most mornings and will take some fresh posters for that area tomorrow. New Forest Dog Warden Service
Hi, the Dog Warden Service has been searching for Jeddah in the Cadman's Pool area and the area between Holly Hatch Inclosure and South Bentley Inclosure. The local Forestry Commission gamekeeper was contacted to see if he had any news, unfortunately he did not but is keeping a look out for Jeddah. As Jeddah has not been sighted in the northern part of the New Forest, the Dog Warden Service is wondering whether he is heading southwards in the direction of Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Burley. The A31 road cuts the New Forest in two but there are plenty of animal underpasses for Jeddah to go through safely. The Dog Warden Service is now diverting through the area Jeddah is lost when driving between towns whenever possible as well as carrying out targeted searches. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Skyesmum, without sightings it is so hard to know where to turn next, everything is worth a go. If he has made it beyond the forest he could be on farmland, so often stray dogs hang around farm buildings. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There is a feeling by some that Jeddah may have moved away from the Forest so although it is of course important that people are still looking for him on the Forest, we will poster Fordingbridge and the villages to the north west - Sandleheath, Rockbourne, Whitsbury, Damerham, Martin, Burgate, Breamore etc. - just spreading the word a little wider.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have been walking my dogs in the Hasley, Sloden area deliberately, hoping for a sighting but no luck. There is plenty for him to eat (horse manure at the very least!) The posters are ruined by the rain so I will laminate some and put them in the area. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before you get a sighting. Pity he is so nervous of dogs as it is only the mad dog owners, and horse riders, who are mad enough to be out in this weather! Is he nervous of horses too? Good luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi i keep my horse in forest new forest way. I will keep an eye out when riding & i will tell all the other horse owner at farm. it's amazing what you see while on the back of a horse. Going along this route I would put ad on www.nfed.co.uk new forest equestrian website it's free and covers the right area I would get poster in all livery yards, stables etc. Maybe even contact ramblers groups. There are thousands of people on the forest someone must hve seen him. I would also get in contact with local forest agisters and commonor on the forest these people know the forest like the back of their hands. My dog went missing in the middle of the forest she had travel miles and was found and anounced on spire fm radio. she turned up stinking dirty tooth hanging out at right angle & exhausted. however there was a look about her that said i'm glad to be home but what a fantastic adventure. looking back i went through terrible stress and termoil thinking i losted her for good i even walked the forest at night on my own (must have been mad) but when i read about dog thiefs and dogs changing hands i would if i had to make a choice prefer my dog at large in the new forest doing what dogs do the weather mild and there will be baby rabbits about far better than locked up by some dog napping scum. I will do my best to spread the word I wish you good luckLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Are you sure the posters haven't blown away - I noticed that most of them seemed to be put up with one drawing pin and we have had very strong winds. New Forest DWs, you are heroes! So relieved you are well kitted out with traps, as I was thinking we will need to trap this lad when we know what route he is travelling. A saluki on the run in tough terrain is a challenge, to put it mildly, but with DWs and helpers with experience and motivation like this I am sure he will be caught.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

New Forest Dog Warden Service
Both Dog Warden vehicles are being used to search in the area where Jeddah was reported last seen. Although this area is very remote and secluded with undulating terrain that makes it difficult to see ponies let alone dogs there are some hamlets and isolated buildings in the direction Jeddah was seen heading where he might hide up and there are plenty of food sources in the area. A good vantage point is Abbott's Well car park near the village of Frogham, from this location you can see right across the area known as Ashley Walk, which has Hasley and Sloden Inclosures adjacent to it. It is also the start of a bike track through to Fritham that cuts through some isolated terrain. People who know this part of the New Forest will know just how difficult the terrain is with mainly footpaths and pony paths across it. In the past we had a similar situation with a nervous dog that took 9 weeks to resolve, he was eventually caught in our dog trap and after a check up at the vets was found to be in good condition, he had been eating food left out by the locals for ponies and cattle and had been sheltering in outbuildings. If Jeddah is seen in a specific location the Dog Warden Service can deploy its dog traps (large cages with -down doors). We are actively looking for him and our Out of Hours contractor knows about him as well. If anybody in the local area sees him, please contact the New Forest Dog Warden Service on 023 80 285446 or the Out of Hours contractor on 08706091449. Even if you are only able to leave a message at least we can try to plot Jeddah's route and set the traps ahead of him. Currently if he is heading west he will come to Ringwood, Fordingbridge or the villages that lie between these towns. Heading north he will cross into Wiltshire. Hopefully he is heading east back towards Fritham. Thank you New Forest Dog Wardens Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Albar you're amazing - thanks! That gives us something to sit and think about now! LOL! destinystarbuck - yes please do go further afield. If Jeddah has gone feral then he'll be trying to work out which way home is... he could be zigzagging his route so please do widen the circle of search. If you're taking a bike, shove the tripe in a pair of stockings or tights and drag it behind you (or a long sock if you happen to only have sheer thin stockings that won't last a drag through a bramble bush!!!) Not sure about local pubs, hopefully Phil & Tracey can update on that one - although the one at the car park where Jeddah ran from should be. Jeddah is terrifed of other dogs - that's why he ran in the first place, he was startled and then a hunt came along - he'll not come anywhere near a dog I'm afraid. If Jeddah is seen please remember to use dog behaviour - no noise, low low voices, don't look him in the eye, yawn at him (it means in dog language that you aren't a threat), and low to the ground. You'll look and feel stupid but it's really really important.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Keep postering Phil & Tracey, it'll take time for him to get courage to show himself. Now the light is coming back of an evening he'll be seen more often. Sunrise and sunset are you best times for sightings - when the food is about - rodents and rabbit time - and people aren't around. If you can manage a late walk or early morning then that's when to do it. It can be days and days between sightings and it's early yet. Keep it up.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Been back twice today where he was last seen and his dog bed and food is untouched. Searched from edge of Fritham plain to sloden, hallickhole hill, little witch, great witch,Hasley then back via holly hatch. Came across a group of ramblers who had walked from west moors via pitts wood inclosure and they had seen nothing but they were aware of the dog being missing as they have seen the posters. So thanks to everyone who has put one up, they are getting the news about. Thanks again to everyone for your help. Phil & Tracey Jeddahs owners.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Albar - thanks for that - in that case you need to look for wooded shelters, badger sets etc that Jeddah can rest in. Look out also for fresh dog faeces (assuming all other walkers pick up!!). Can you also do me a favour and let me know if there are any Ordnance Survey points (usually concrete bollards marked OSBM in a triangle) (just take a note of the numbers listed). We're trying a new theory of following his routes (when sightings come in) using the OS so we can track more accurately. Don't forget to put posters up as you go! Well done keep up the good work!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sherlock - We are taking that path today out across Fritham Plain , down around Holly Hatch and back through Sloden etc. No, there are no buildings at all with the exception of Holly Hatch Cottage, which is the Keeper's cottage.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Phil we've been studying maps of the area. It looks like there is a footpath that runs directly from the car park you were in along Fritham Plain and directly down to Holly Hatch - it would make a natural "runway" for Jeddah and would make a good area for him to sneak along - and to follow a scent. Any chance anyone can walk that path and check for possible hiding holes, stables, out buildings, I see it goes through woods too so could well be shelter there. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Remember to get info to horse riding people who may be out and about in that area, also to ramblers' clubs and birdwatchers.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Albar are there buildings around those areas? Stables etc? Look there - food sources easily found at stables. destinystarbuck don't take Jeddah's favourite food, he needs food that he can smell easily in strong wind and rain - take pilchards, or proper old fashioned tripe - the kind that stinks your car out and can be smelt a mile off. Albar Going out tomorrow 1st March to Sloden, Amberwood and Alderhill Inclosures, they are quiet and fairly free of people. He may be using these places as a base, hence sightings at Haseley and Holly Hatch, or he could be doing the circling. We can only keep looking and hope we will glimpse him. Spoke to you today Phil and will speak again vey soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Right had a good chat with Jeddah's owner last night and we have a plan of action to try and reel Jeddah in - but its really important now that we get more sightings of Jeddah - so please if you are in the area can you poster as much as you possibly can. We need to track where he is moving to and from. Ta!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Phil&Tracey - can you plot where Jeddah was last sighted on a map and where he went missing from and see where that is in relation to your home? Just trying to work out if he's on a route - we can then plan a scent trail for you. If you want help/advice on this or to discuss further i'm on sherlock@doglost.co.ukLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have been out again this afternoon with our salukis looking in the Holly Hatch inclosure and around but no luck. To be honest the weather was so foul that Jeddah was probably lying low and keeping well out of sight. Another sighting is needed p.g.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Walked around the Holly Hatch enclosure with my own Salukis this morning but no sightings. Gave out posters to local cottages and helpful lady said she would inform Broomy lodge which is also in that area. Gave out posters to the High Corner Inn, this is a pub in the area where alot of dog walkers and ramblers go. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Jeddah has been seen by a horse rider somewhere in the Hasley/Holly Hatch Inclosures area but the time is not definite as the info was passed on through others. However it was a positive sighting because of his distinctive blue collar. The owner is going out tomorrow on a bike with a friend and we will be going out tomorrow afternoon. Fingers crossed!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Bickton and I walked Hampton Ridge this morning, scanning with binoculars - its a vast area and the bracken is the same colour as Jeddah so spotting him will be difficult. I walk up there most days so will keep my eyes peeled. I have 3 lurchers so if Jeddah is about he may follow them. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I tried to e-mail yesterday, but couldn't get on to the webstie. I walked from Frogham to Fritham sanning with binoculars, but there were so many people around and if Jeddah is nervous it is not surprising that he wasn't visible. Saw all the posters - perhaps owners could also contact the two riding stables in the area - they ride out all over the area. Fir Tree Equestrian Centre - 01425 654744 and Arniss Riding Stables - 01425 654114. I'm sure they would be happy to help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have been out today postering in the Frogham and Hyde area of the Forest and handing leaflets to anybody who moves and know that the owners have been doing the same in the Fritham area. But the Forest is a vast area to cover so is there anyone else out there who might be able to help in any way? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Posters need to be put up in the area a.s.a.p. lamposts, entrances to parks, vets, petshops, ask postie, milkmen, binmen (even put poster on bins), schools, deliver to houses etc. Handout smaller posters to people, especially dog walkers. Put A4 poster in car windows. RSPCA and rescue centres need checking regularly and preferably visited in person, by owner or someone who knows Jeddah. xx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
