  • Other Info Bear went missing while we were walking him, in the woods on the estate, after running into a field. His recall is usually excellent and he never likes to be too far away from us, so we are worried that he may have been taken. He is normally wary of strangers but 6 hours of searching and calling him proved in vain leading us to believe that he may no longer be on the estate.

Wonderful news - I looked out in the Northchurch area this morning just in case. I've had a really bad day today but reading this has made my heart full of joy. I am so happy for you all.

Very very pleased to be able to say that we found Bear today and he is now home safe and sound.

He spent a long, cold & dark night alone in the woods but luckily hasn't suffered any lasting harm.

A million thanks to all those who put the word out both on-line and otherwise, sent messages of support and especially to those people, most of which we had never met before, who dropped what they were doing and came to Ashridge to help search for him.

A particular thankyou must go to Sue & Paul, who live on New Road, who's efforts and two sightings of Bear were invaluable to helping us track him down.

You have all warmed our hearts.

Thankyou.

Alan & Cherry.

Been in contact with owners by text this morning and they've just confirmed he's been FOUND! Brilliant news and well done Alan & co for sticking at the search in the early hours of losing him. x

Hi
I saw this dog yesterday in Ashridge Park by Brick Kiln cottage drive way. He was on the road and looked like he had a scent , he was definitely focused on something but no deer in site, I did stop but could'nt get near him, turned car around and he was gone, he was on the road and heading in the direction of the common, He was in good health and around 6.45pm Good luck I hope you find him. Often dogs stay, or return to fairly close to where they got separated from you. Let the National Trust Office and Cafe up at the Monument know (as Claire says below) as they will put up a poster and keep an eye out for you. The rangers work all over the estate and they will keep an eye out for you. If he's wary, probably best to have people call you or someone he knows upon sighting so that he doesn't get scared and run off. I'm a dog walker/carer and will make sure all my dog walker friends keep their eyes peeled for him as we're often up on the common several times a day. A bit more detail about where he went missing would be good as it's a big place! Hope you find him soon! x

If a dog normally has a good recall then there is one reason he may go.
If he got a trail of a fox .
Is there any water ponds etc in the area.
Could he be caught up in some bushes in the area.
If you have anyone to search the area may be a good idea.
I have added Bear to the BIGGSD site.
Fingers crossed

Ask up at the café in the woods up there are this will be a good food outlet for him. Put up lots of posters up there as well - café/car park areas. There are usually lots of dog walkers up there and the weather is not too bad today. Also go back to the point where he was first lost from as he may head back that way. Good luck.Last edited: 2015-04-27 06:50:04 by ClaireC
