I have several e-mails from owner. I asked him if Meli was found what would he do. He said he would travel to the UK himself to pick her up. He is also searching other lost and found sites on the internet and sent me a dog which was lost and did look very much like Meli. Regards Jan xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have created the doglost poster into an A4 word doc which would be easier to e-mail or fax to quarantine kennels and vets. As we know Meli could be anywhere it would need helpers in all areas to send details to vets etc. LOL Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

First thing to do is to establish whether a dog of this description was taken into quarantine shortly after the date Meli went missing. It presumably won't be too hard to discover where they go from the Channel Tunnel or the ferries. If no record there, then she was smuggled in. Logically, if these people are after giving a better life then they would have taken her to the vets for some jabs. Really the only thing to do is to get the poster to every vets, with a carefully worded description. This is a hugely time consuming task and Admin would probably not be able to do it without help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oops! Just read Mihalis' comment more carefully, and I see that it was the petshop owner who had studied at the ACC. Sorry!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

In answer to Coleen: yes, bringing in a dog with no papers is 'smuggling' and there are quite strict penalties. Heavy fines and I think that the dog would automatically be either placed into quarantine or returned to its home country, no matter how long it had been in the UK. So, however good the intentions of the people that took Meli, they were acting illegally. If the man had been a student of the ACC, could they be persuaded to search their records? I can't believe they would be happy to have their name connected with someone who had behaved in this manner.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is very sad for Mihalis as Meli was obviously well loved and cared for but if the english couple that 'rescued' her were willing to run the risk of being prosecuted for smuggling the dog into the UK the chances are she will be well looked after and it's unlikely she will be found and returned. I hope the owners can find some peace in that and try and maybe help one of the other many needy dogs in Greece. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi! I'm the owner of MELI. Thanks to your interest. MELI is lost because she got chase to a few cats outside our house, making a hole to the wire fencing & she couldn't find her way back. Unfortunately no microchipped. Al we know about the English couple became known from the pet shop owner, he was study in UK at the Animals Care College for years, he is a dog trainer, he know very well the language & he said to my, "Mihalis I'm sure that were English", they have took her because they thought that was abandoned. Unfortunately we met him the day after & also we don't know car registration number, but I remember a foreign number green Volkswagen caravan of '70-'74 around the area of missing. We know that is very difficult, but not impossible,to find her & we really thank all of you! Regards Mihalis Mplotsos.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It is very expensive to do the full Q can cost in access of ?5000 depending on Kennels. Also not sure how it would be viewed just driving the dog into this Country with no papers - would that still count as 'smuggling'. I do not think you can just take a dog out of a Country and bring it into the UK (even if intending to place the dog in Q). With the amount of dogs we have, and the fact that Meli looks like lots of other dogs, I think it will be hard to trace her. This was a big risk for these people something could have gone wrong! I hope she is safe and well. ColeenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hope Meli is happy, safe, loved and cared for wherever she is. Looks really cute in the photo. Would be easy for her new keepers to register her at a vets in England and chip and vaccinate her. Agree that she will be hard to find.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Direct email from owners QUOTE "MELI was lost at 16/11/06, because she couldn't find her way back. We were looking for her for one week, when we were told from the pet shop we used to buy our dog's food, that an English couple, (the man is around 35 years old, he is bold & rather slim,& the woman around 30 years old, with golden brown long hairs), found her & wanted to take her with them. They asked the pet shop owner, what papers were needed in order to take her home, & whether they could use the sedative CALMIVET so as to be asleep during the trip. They went back to England by car, & they have probably used the tunnel on their way back on 22/11/06. As we know there is no vehicle control for citizens of EU using the tunnel,we have friends that passing the tunnel from France to UK, without customs & pets inspection,so she is in UK, bat we don't know if is she somewhere in quarantine or not. We have start this search in INTERNET in the hope of seeing MELI again, & we please you to inform us if you know anything about her & to place the attached announcement & photos on your web site. MELI is a black cross Labrador, with a white stripe on chest,& have a few white hairs on the toes of her's both back feet. She is neutered, medium sized, about 20-25kg. Thank you in advance. Kind regards Mihalis"Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

A dog can do part or all of its pets passport in its Country of origin. So they do not need to do Q here at all if they meet all the requirments. I have brought dogs in using this process. If driven into the Uk it might be very well possible to avoid detection though. Unless this dog is or falls ill then I do not think she will surface (especially if she was smuggled in) if caught she will have to either go into Q for the full term or be sent back. The owners will then be fined for smuggling a dog into the Country. Greece is not a nice Country for animals but the law is the law. There have been stories before coming out of Greece where the locals have accussed bona fide rescues of doing horrible things with the dogs they rescue (all not true). They seem not to like their dogs having a better life. So could this be another one of them? ColeenLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I would also like to know from owners, how they were able to establish it was a tourist and which country they came from? There seems to be only part of a story here. Can the owners please register on here and tell us the whole story.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I think who every as got Meil they must have wanted her to have got her out with or with-out passport and yes you can get them out another way. What I would say to the owner you may have a job on your hands getting her back. So you might think if you never do she would be well loved and may be you could think of adopting another poor dog from Greece because a lot of the dogs that are lucky to be caught by animal welfare get vaccinate and spade and castrated then they have to be released in the area they come from, only to be poisond by the authorities and alike with rat posion or have other unspeakeable cruel things that happen to them. Yes Greece have a lot to answer for. Hope this little dog as a happy life here. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well I'm not one to usually cast judgement but I wouldnt want to send any dog back to Greece, having lived there, I would rather get as many out as possible..... sorry and hope this little one is safe! xx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Tash, I know what you mean. I haven't travelled much, not least because of a bitch (recently had pups) I fed for a week then pushed her away to get on a coach for the airport over 20 years ago in Tenerife. I still cry when I think of her face when I did that - if only I had the courage/knowledge I have now. I gather Greece is one of the worst countries, but we can't make any judgments here without all the facts.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So pleased Meli has been put on the site. I have had direct contact with owner by e-mail. I did bring up the points mentioned earlier about the pet passport and that the uk are strict on quarantine laws. I have been very concerned about this one. Looks like smuggled into the uk in a vehice by English tourists!! E-mails passed to admin. We would not know where to start looking for this one!!! LOL Jan (Liverpool) xx Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

On A Dog Mission
My first thoughts are has the dog been "adopted" for its own good???? Def not slating Greece or it's people as every country is as bad as each other etc but I've travelled all over Greece in particular and have to say Corfu was overun with dogs, mostly strays who looked half starved. I spent loads of time and cash on dogs buying them keebabs every night as I couldnt bare seeing them in such a state. Has Meli been taken by a do-gooder who has not reliesed the dog is owned????? I'll admit now given the chance I'd of bought home at least 30 dogs on one trip!!! Been to greece 5 times so I'm looking at 150 dogs easily.....Tash xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It should be noted that the phone number is international, for anyone who does call owner, which affects cost of call obviously. What about feasibility of smuggled in animals Jazzi, I don't know how tight security would be having never travelled abroad with pet? Do we know more about the 'alleged adoption' or disappearance?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Am curious as to the statement adopted in Greece, does this mean that Meli was in a sanctuary/rescue prior to rehoming?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wouldn't she be in quarantine somwhere if she didn't have a passport?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

As far as I know it takes approx 6 months of vet checks, innoculations and paperwork to be completed before a pet passport is issued.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Can I just point out that Meli would need a pet passport to get into the UK from Greece. To have a passport she would have to be chipped, vaccinated etc and this takes time. I saw this original alert at the end of November, so it would have been impossible for her to arrive in UK direct from Greece in that space of time. Not being negative towards this, just pointing out some facts.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
