Sighting of curly coated dog this morning - Woodbury Common. Posted on FB group - Lost and Found Cats and Dogs in Exmouth Exeter and East Devon. https://www.facebook.com/groups/lafcad/?fref=ts This is what the post says: My dad was out walking this morning with the dogs and he saw a black lab and a curly coated dog probably a labradodle. Both very wet and he couldn't see that they were with anyone. He was over Woodbury common walking around the walk on the way down towards yettington (left hand side of the road). Both dogs shot off into the woods and disappeared. Heard of Daisy the labradodle missing and wondered if it could be her but not heard of a black lab missing. Any ideas

Thank you Seeks, sophiesuds, 3labs and Debbie. Followed up on all your comments. Unknown dog ID 86729 has now been reunited - ID 86793 and the Chester dogs have now been checked and sadly ruled out as neither are Sooty :(

It really does mean a huge amount to me that you are taking the time and making the effort to find these possible 'Sooty's' and send them to me. Keep them coming please - I don't care how many you send, I will check them all because one day soon one of these possibilities will turn out to be Sooty and I don't want to miss it when it is. Thank you all, Caron xx

Sadly, no Sooty today. Will go back tomorrow, and the next day, and every day until I have some other possible sighting that takes me somewhere else. I WILL get Sooty back home where she belongs, and I won't stop until I do. Thank you for your messages of support - eventually I will have good news for all of us xxxx

Thank you. Just knowing I have all of this support out there is heartwarming and gives me strength and hope on the days when it all feels hopeless xx
3labs
Oh that's such a shame. I was a bit concerned by the lack of posts from you on Facebook, but have seen the new ones today. Hertfordshire is too far to be of any help but hope you have her back very soon. I have a little black lab who looks so similar and I wonder about Sooty every day. I hope you have some good news very soon x
Caron
Sadly not. Haven't had any possible sightings for more than a week, and no dogs found matching Sooty either. Now just praying hard for some good news... CX
3labs
Is there any news on Sooty?
Caron
Didn't spot that on the map, but now have their number and will call. Thank you, Caron x

Copied from Sooty's FB page:

New day, new tactics. Now feeling more energised - time to stop feeling sorry for myself. Just had a phone call offering some sound advice and so we are now going covert! Time to stop thinking human and start thinking dog. Going to take Fable on her lead, my pockets full of treats and familiar scent items and we are going to be quiet and calm. No more shouting, just lots of listening, and doing nothing that could spook Sooty. Not a normal human reaction when trying to get your dog to come to you, but one that makes great sense from a dogs perspective. Will keep going back to the area of the last possible sighting and will leave food and scent items. Going to ask the cattery owners if they can set up a feeding station in a quiet sheltered area not to close to their cattery, but close enough for them to maintain it without putting them out. It may not be Sooty, but there is definitely a loose dog out there somewhere that belongs to someone, and we need to earn it's trust and get it home. Now going to try and contact the local newspapers and radio stations and get Sooty out there and on everyone's radar. No chance of me giving up - going to get Sooty home one way or another, Caron xx
Caron
Seen CCTV, but not helpful. Distant, fuzzy and only 2 seconds of film. Could be Sooty, but then again, could be any mid size black dog. I've put a more detailed message on Sooty's FB page https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403632246612153/ But I can copy it onto here if anyone would like me to. Feeling a bit down at the minute, but determined to keep looking. Thank you all for caring, Caron x
Archsuzanne
Good luck , i hope it is Sooty xx Tweeted again
Sarah
Info from Sooty's Facebook page - sighting of a lone Black Labrador nr Honiton EX14 9SR, CCTV being checked out by owner today. I thought it would be useful to put that information on here. Caron will update Doglost when they've checked CCTV.

"Just heard from the cattery owners - they have just checked their cctv and found they have some, very poor and very short, footage of the sighted dog. They have said we MAY be able to tell if it's Sooty, but it's not great quality so could be hard. We are going to see the footage at 10am tomorrow morning. Trouble is, one fast moving Lab looks pretty much like all the rest, and poor quality won't help, but I'll let you all know. Pray to whomever you believe in, or alternatively, keep everything crossed. If we can identify Sooty, at least we have a better/more definite search area. Caron xx"Last edited: 2015-03-07 09:09:02 by Sarah

Beautiful girl, hope you find her very soon x
Helen
I completely agree re database- A simple excel spreadsheet shared with each area would be all that is required... My guess is that Data Protection rules may be playing a part.It would cut down a lot of time for the Wardens answering the phone I suspect.
It does show however it is worth you making those calls to check.
Caron
Couldn't quite believe it myself when they said it, but it could just be time constraints I guess. What amazes me though is that there isn't some sort of automated computer database linking all dog wardens so that every warden gets info on dogs in every other area as well as their own. After all, dogs are mobile and can travel either under their own steam or with a little help from some revolting dog-napper - and it not as if dogs can read road signs and understand they must stay in their warden's area. Thought this was supposed to be the computer age!! Still following up on any and every possible sighting of Sooty, but still coming home empty handing. Heartbreaking x
Maxy
"They did confirm that their dog wardens don't talk to dog wardens in other areas" That sounds really helpful?!? What is the point of that? I wonder if that is due to lack of time or a lack of enthusiasm?? Anyway we are all still thinking of you Caron and keeping our eyes peeled.
Caron
Cornwall dog has both her canines, whereas Sooty only has one, so definitely not Sooty sadly. Will keep chasing all possible leads and hoping that one of them will eventually be Sooty. Need to keep chasing rainbows to find my Sooty shaped pot of gold at the end of one of them. x
DogLostGnasher - Area Co-ordinator, East Dorset
Thank you madmudmob. Caron has called the CORNWALL warden and has had this to say. However it has to be said may be worth asking them to rescan as it won't be the first dog to have been found recently with two chips.
"Spoken to Cornwall council again on 0300 1234 212 and they couldn't give me details on this Lab but did say she is chipped and the owner details are completely different to mine. Couldn't tell me if they have been able to contact owner or if chip details are up to date, or even if she has been returned to her owner. Can't help but think that if she had been returned home they would have told me, so assume they still have her. Anyone out there looking for a Female Black Lab should ring the council on the number above. They did confirm that their dog wardens don't talk to dog wardens in other areas. Caron x"

No news yet. And, yes Thank you, I did get your text re K9, and have been reading all the info on their website. Unfortunately, they need a scent item, and as we have two dogs, plus, recently had a third dog staying for a week, and also had a couple of friends with dogs in the house over the last few weeks, finding a scent that is purely Sooty's is impossible. That said, they offer great info about how to take and keep a scent marker for your dog, which I will do with my second dog, and also Sooty when she comes home.

Any news Caron? Did you get my text regarding k9 search dogs?

Would be worth a phone call to k9 tracker as scent can be picked by her dogs for upto two weeks after last seen. Maybe worth considering.

Bumping Sooty's page in light of message from Caron posted on Sooty's fb page
"Just had a call re sighting of lone black lab in fields above Branscombe beach. Don't know if it's Sooty, but on my way now to see if I can find it. Fingers crossed, Caron"
Caron
Sadly, heard nothing today. Sooty seems to have just vanished. Hoping that she has lost her collar and is with someone who doesn't know we are looking for her and that she is fast asleep by a fire with a full tummy. Alternatives are just to hard to endure. Just want my precious girl back home.

aw Brilliant Caron. hopefully Sooty will stop her holiday and start thinking of coming home, trouble with dogs is they can live off the land ......so come on Sooty lets get you back to where you belong xxxx
Caron
Dave, Grizzly Race Director, has replied and will put something over the PA tomorrow. What a star.. Cx
Caron
Every possible sighting either gives hope to me, or to some other dog owner missing their dog. I'd rather have a thousand phone calls or messages every day with possible sightings to track, than no phone calls or messages at all. Any news is good news for somebody. Just good to know that all possibilities are being picked up and followed. We will get Sooty home, one way or another, and it will be thanks to your efforts. CX

Your very welcome Caron just hope we hear some good news soon
Love Maxy's idea we went along the grizzly today as they've already put the signs up and would be good to have the runners having a look out I did put laminated posters up along the route and although they will be running I did put a couple up on the really steep hill so they should be slowed down enough to read :-)
Caron
Thanks so much guys. No trace hopefully means Sooty is mobile and therefore able to scavenge and stay warm. Have contacted Grizzly co-ord and will be out there tomorrow with posters/flyers. Got to be some news soon.... Fingers crossed x
Maxy
Hey Caron, I did four hours in and around the undercliffs between Rousdon and Seaton this morning with my Border Collie. I found two deer paths that run from the coast path right up to the top of the cliffs to the fields where you last saw Sooty. I went up one, along two fields, and down the other, coming back to Rousdon. Suffice to say he just turned up a couple of pheasants and a deer. She could easily have gone down either path. In fact I saw clear dog paw marks on one, before my boy had got there. So I think you are right to target Seaton, she could well have followed the smells of food and humans in Seaton and went that way. Lets hope she gets flushed out by the runners in the Grizzly tomorrow. Maybe you could ask them to put an announcement out?
Niki - Area Volunteer, Devon & Somerset
Just got back from search, there was a kids fun run on down there today and tomorrow is the Grizzly which is the adult run! Don't envy them with them hills!! Bumped Into someone that works for you Caron his got a great big gsd I've put in cafes pubs hotels shops, houses, walkers. All the posts on sea front are metal so couldn't put any there but put some in Beer on the grizzly run so loads will see tomorrow :-)
Found Bella the black lab escaped from pub and managed to get her off the beach and back to the pub!! Thought she was Sooty at first :-/ everyone seems to have black labs round there!!! lots of people are aware of Sooty and want to help. Seen your Posters too Caron. Prey Sooty is back home with you soon. Xx Last edited: 2015-02-28 17:00:25 by Niki - Area Volunteer, Devon & Somerset

Thank you so much Niki, sitting here in tears wondering how I can possibly thank everyone for their amazing support and help. It means so much to me, Caron x

Doing a search today of Seaton and Beer have lots of Doglost posters and flyers that Sarah moss has done and posted to me so I will be putting some up and handing out flyers to walkers will also put some through doors.
Caron
You are an angel - thank you. I haven't been as far West as the landslip yet, but have been out today with my younger dog (Fable - Huntaway/Springer X) down the under-cliff slightly west of Rousdon, then followed the coast path East, (heading toward Lyme Regis) and came back up into Rousdon - fable cut her paw slightly and was limping so I thought it best to get her home. Fable put up a couple of pheasants and spooked two deer, but no sign of Sooty. Hope your Border has more luck - I'm keeping everything crossed. X
Maxy
Thanks for the update Caron. I'm going to walk from East of Rousdon to the old landslip and back on Saturday morning. I will have my Border Collie with me. He has Level 1 search and rescue training and will airscent anything unusual hopefully. However it is such an impassable area in some places it could be difficult for me to follow him. I did some of the coast path from Seaton golf course eastwards earlier in the week and he was disappearing down every offshoot of the the coast path. I feel Sooty could have jumped off from the fields above onto a ledge and scrambled down somewhere and simply not be able to know how to get out. Here's hoping!
Caron
I've walked all around the Underleys area of Beer. I've also followed the Public Footpath from Beer to Branscombe, then walked the coast path from Branscombe back to Beer. Now understand that the Labrador sighting in Beer was a local dog who gets out occasionally. Have covered more than 35 miles on foot in the last ten days (was so stiff one morning last week I struggled going down my stairs - obviously not as fit as I thought I was). I have also walked - where accessible - the under-cliff below Rousdon, and dropped down onto the coast path which I then followed all the way into Lyme Regis. Only part I've not covered so far is the coast path between Seaton and Beer. Had my younger dog with me for most of these walks and she has not sparked once - very depressing. Just had a thought - when do they run the Grizzly? Doesn't that go from Seaton to the somewhere West of Branscombe and back again? Wonder if I could get something to the organizer to ask the runners to let me know if they see a dog loose? (Sorry, thinking out loud). Thank you all for your amazing support, x
Lynne
Has anyone checked the Underleys area of Beer yet? I agree Maxy a good idea for a search party to check the coastal paths and the Undercliff which is very wild in places.
Maxy
I would be willing to join/help organise a search for her. I'm local and know a few dog owners in the Rousdon estate. I suggest walking from the Rousdon estate coast path junction to the next junction with the coast path towards Seaton, past the landslips, with another group walking the edge of the fields on the coastal cliffs. She could have jumped over the edge and just not be able to get back up.
Sarah
A further comment on a share from someone mentions there is another dog that gets out along there - so please in case this is the other dog, please keep eyes open still all areas.
