So glad Fly is back home, good ending for a lovely doggie xxx

Happy to see fly back, and safe, and sound. Lovelt reunited pic. Stay close now Fly where you are dearly loved:-) me n my girl. Great idea, and am willing to donate towards a larger trap too.
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
Tx Gilo for the update...
Gilo
I would be happy to donate to a bigger trap too. Spoke to Ray last night re return of the bigger trap and meantioned he should go into production! Fly is coming on really well. We had only had her for 12 hours when she originally ran off so hadn't really experienced life in our house at all. She wasn't toilet trained but is already making leaps and bounds in that area. Our other pups are still sorting her place within the pack but she is a real pleasure. Very very affectionate given her former life and fortnight on the run!Last edited: 2014-05-02 15:45:07 by Gilo

Thank you michief.
michief
If you find anything bigger let me know and I will contribute.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
It was the large Vulcan trap which Fly backed out of, just not quite long enough for a longdog. We think that because she stretched her body and neck to reach the bait her rump prevented the door from closing and was able to back out as it was released. Still looking into ways of buying a longer one, I will keep updating on this page when I have any news.
michief
These are quite big traps

http://www.mdcexports.co.uk/?p=vulcan

but how can we donate specifically for this purpose.
michief
When I looked I found one golden retriever size. I'm hoping I saved it is my favourites at work. I'll let u know tomorrow
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
I've never trapped an animal(other than a pigeon with stick, string and plastic laundry basket LOL ) but when I looked on web for a trap for Cindy the greyhound I couldn't see any large enough. That's good that Ray can make them, perhaps we'll all have to do a few tail wags and give a few face licks!! Yvonne, old Essex girl.
DogLostMoogie - Area Volunteer, Cornwall
yay, wonderful to see she's safe
CopperM
Transport volunteers could be sourced by contacting Rescue Helpers Unite:
http://forum.rescuehelpersunite.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=16
In spite of the 'empty' front page, once you have joined,(free) you'll find transporters countrywide...
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
The trap used for Fly was made by Ray, I will look into costs etc and work out a way with admin,.
There are traps available via Beardies rescue an Canine Crusaders, if one is needed call admin and they will pass on details to me.
michief
But how an we donate specifically for a bigger trap for SW areaw

Thank you so much for adding the reunited photo, its nice to put a face to the name and Fly looks so happy being cuddled. All your hardwork paid off x
Spindle
Esther, please see Poochpals post. Doglost does have traps, they are currently held by area co ordinators.
Esther
Perhaps cages could be kept with area Co- ordinators ?
michief
I would be happy to contribute to a bigger trap too.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I will be looking into getting the bigger one for Southwest, I store the Vulcan trap (the one Fly escaped from) and a smaller one here in Dorset, there are other organisations which have traps around the country and if doglost don't have one close enough the coordinator for that areas can advise who to contact. Transportation is a problem but there are rescue runs who can sometimes help, in Fly's case the trap needed to be there quickly due to the threats from the farmer. Doglost hold a refundable deposit for the loan of any equipment as sadly we have had traps stolen in the past.
Willow Dood
That does sound like a very good idea me n my girl as traps do seem to be very effective when catching a dog who has been on the run for a while. My only concern would be the administration of it. Where would it be stored? DogLost is an on-line facility, probably with no storage facilities. But it would be great to have one in the south and a good idea to buy more for other parts of the country as time goes on. I would be prepared to contribute too.
Fantastic reunited photo of you and Fly. Stay close now Fly.
Esther
Great photo, Fly looks so happy. I am not in the south west, but me n my girl you have a good point. How much do these traps cost? would it be worth trying to raise money so each area has one? So often people seem to be desperately waiting for one. Actually getting these traps transported around must cost a fair bit of money.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Would it be a good idea to buy one of these large traps ourselves for the southern area of UK. When a greyhound went missing in Essex the owner couldn't borrow a trap large enough. It's very kind of Ray to loan his trap out but it probably cost Gilo quite a bit in transport costs and Ray might have wanted to use it himself. The trap could be hired out for say £25 and that hire fee could be used towards buying another trap for somewhere else in the country. I don't know how much large traps cost but I'm sure Ray would advise, I wouldn't mind contributing towards the cost.Last edited: 2014-04-26 07:29:57 by Me N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer

Fly looks very happy in your arms - is it worth sending the farmer a thank you for allowing you the time to catch her (despite the deadline) as it may keep him sweet if it happens again on his land.

Sure she is fine. Vets a waste of money, but praised to you for trying so hard. Many people wouldn't have put in sufficient effort. Fly owes her life to you're perseverance. Wonderful outcome!

Lovely photo, thank you for the update. Worth knowing what type of trap it is and having one like it in the south west for future longdogs who's rear ends stop the door shutting!!

Great news. Stay safe and close lovely Fly and welcome home xx

Right.... So we set the trap at 10am yesterday. Whilst we hadn't seen her since our failed attempts to trap her on Monday, she was seen by a local on Wednesday night and she had been eating the food left out. The team watched all day and she appeared at 7pm. She entered the trap for the food but as the door mechanism was different on this new trap there was confusion as to whether the door had closed or not! But she was in there so long they assumed it had so headed down. Sure enough she was trapped. A little distressed initially, she was licking one of the teams face within minutes. She's still a bit nervous and spending a lot of time under the kitchen table but is responsive to affection. Bath and vets tomorrow. Seems to have lost a little weight but eating and drinking fine.

What wonderful news. I am so thrilled for you all especially fly. Can't wait to hear all the news. Stay safe now beautiful fly!!
Gilo
Well I can hardly believe it but Fly is asleep under the kitchen table, in our house and is home! We are all very jittery, and would like to never open the front door again for fear of a repeat escape! More details to follow as we are all exhausted (especially Fly). Enormous thanks to all those who were out all hours helping to get her home!
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Well said Shelagh... :) + Just try and stay calm Gilo.
Shelagh
Put what the farmer said out of your thoughts. You are doing so well, you will catch her very soon. Please stay positive. You are doing a great job
michief
Come on Fly. Time to go home. Good luck Gilo. Let's hope the farmer is just trying to pressurise you to try harder. .
Gilo
New trap left unset over night with a small amount of food in and new scent trials laid. Her paw prints were seen in the trap this morning (we have a 'paw' enthusiast on the team and hes quite sure!) and the food was gone. The trap is now set and being watched. Its certainly longer and taller than the last one. Just have to hope she comes in the day as its so difficult to see anything at night!
Unknown
Gilo keep positive.

Come on Fly into that trap you must go please.

Stay safe baby xxxx
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
You are right me n my girl. Shooting is a last resort, it can only be carried out if there is no other way to stop an attack. If a farmer has to do this to save his livestock he then has to report it to the police.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
What an awful thought, being a townie I was under the impression a dog could only be shot if it was worrying/scaring livestock. Has she bonded with any of your dogs, if she has could you take one on a lead with a pocket full of treats and walk round the edge of the field with it in the hope that she might come over to you. Think you'd have to ignore her if you saw her and see what she did.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I have sent you an email Gilo regarding the threats from the farmer. Hoping Fly will be safe before the weekend.
Gilo
Thanks all. It's very difficult when you know Sunday is approaching and we have until then or she will be shot on sight. New trap in situ. Left with food in tonight ( just a bit) then will be set tomorrow. We still haven't seen her since Monday but last nights food had gone. We just have to hope.
Esther
She is still in the area, so you haven't blown it Gilo . Keep being patient you will get her. mischief is right.
michief
Come on Gilo. I know how frustrating set backs are but you have not blown it yet and you are p lulling out all stops to re capture her. Just a few more tries and age will be home.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Good idea about the Bach Rescue Remedy. I did a study of it on animals years ago and it does work! No suggestion as with humans, so definately worth a try. Also, when watching try and relax, look relaxed and sit small and not straight on to the trap. So close now, you're almost there.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Is there a campsite/restaurant nearby that she could possibly be scavenging food from, she may have been resting up somewhere if she isn't too hungry. I think it's good that she rested up near the trap. Would you consider putting Bach Rescue Remedy in her food to make her less frightened, it was used on Cindy the greyhound who was giving everybody the run around for 7 weeks, reunited ID 56302, makes interesting reading. Hope you see Fly again soon.Last edited: 2014-04-22 20:33:08 by Me N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I don't believe you have blown it, maybe she is just not hungry enough after eating well for a couple days or she has caught herself a bunny or 2, there are lots of young ones about now. Also she may be aware that she is being watched., being a sighthound she will be scanning the area the whole time. Leave small amount of food as before and leave the trap unset till the larger one arrives.
Gilo
After an incredibly stressful day I have found a man and van that will collect the trap from Ray at 10am so should be to us by two ish. Its pricey but i have no measurements or weights of the trap and Ray is very busy catching other dogs today. There was a catch 22 situation last evening where the trap was set ( having failed to catch her already) and when hubby got the word to un set it to gain her confidence back, she bloody appeared! She laid down and slept by the trap. Couldnt approach or would scare her so waited. And waited till 11pm at which point you could not see the trap, Fly or your hand in front of your face. They choose to leave rather than approach. By their return at first light, it had been triggered but nothing inside :(. It is mow most certainly not set and wont be till Thursday at the earliest. However, the area has been monitored almost all day, and she has not been seen. I fear we have blown it. Last edited: 2014-04-23 22:38:43 by AlisonH
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I think maybe the existing trap may not be long enough or maybe the bait was hanging too low. It is a good idea about the car, I'm sure this will be looked into, without knowing the location I can't comment on the possibility of doing that. I just wish she would give herself up to those who are there to help her.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Would Fly get into an open car/ van and if she would is there anywhere safe and quiet you could park up not too far from the trap ie a quiet lane. If there is you could set the car up as a feeding station and play sounds of a distressed rabbit to entice her in. There is a site called www.soundboard.com that has these sounds, when I played it my sleeping ret. greyhound was up like a shot, very keen, and looking into my computer, greys don't use energy unless they want to. I found a courier co. and they wanted £173 for the journey. Is the existing trap broken then or isn't it big enough. If it's not working well, perhaps a local engineering co. or garage would look at it for you. These are just a few thoughts from this old Essex girl. Hope you manage to catch Fly soon.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Do you know anyone from Brixham Fish Market? I know they go out and come back everyday with delivieres. I know they cannot put something like that in the back of the lorry, but if the situation explained a nice driver might collect and take it in the cab. Or alternative company's that might have sent deliveries up that way?

Might be worth asking dpd they are an amazingly efficient with deliveries

We need help! The farmer has given us a deadline of Sunday to catch Fly. I need suggestions of ways to get a trap from Birmingham to Devon by early evening tomorrow. Ray is out catching dogs today so he can only hand it over tomorrow. I have hugely limited internet access as of last night. Parcel force can only do overnight transit. Any ideas welcome.
Shelagh
You guys are doing an amazing job. A little while longer and you will have her.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Minor set back but Gilo & co have taken advice from Ray. The good thing is that the trap going off did not spook her, also she is learning who is supplying the food and that it is regular. All of this is building her confidence. Still very early days, just taking it calmly and quietly is the best way forward.
michief
More tempting food so she drops her guard as she goes in. Liver perhaps!
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Oh no :( Good luck Gilo, hope she is really hungary.
Gilo
She managed to set the trap off but backed out before it could catch her! She then sat and looked at the trap - they think she wanted the food. She has now wondered off so trap is re set. Heading up now to take over for a bit.
Gilo
Just had another update. She remains in the same spot sleeping. She has got up a few times to move and sniff around a bit but she is still in the field with the set trap. It rained all day yesterday so I think she must have been on the move a lot to keep warm hence today's exhaustion.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
So near yet so far!! Come on fly, we want you safe TODAY please. This is where the patience comes in.
Gilo
I can't bear this! Morning team watched the trap from half five and saw nothing so went to set the trap just after seven and she was asleep next to it out of view from the road. She was disturbed but didn't bolt. Food offered with a here you go, then two chaos turned and went in the other direction. She trotted off in the other direction. They waited a while and then quickly set the trap and retreated. She ate last nights food. Currently she is napping in the field with the trap in, being watched from the road. Aaaaaagggggghhhhhhh!
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Approach with caution in the morning, you may find she has decided to have a nap in there! Fingers crossed she will follow the rules and be safe soon.
michief
The one my friend saw at Berry Pomoroy might have been a farm dog allowed to roam. In which case some of the sightings may be that. On the other hand it is only 3 miles from Berry Pomoroy to Compton cross country, so it could all be her daily patrolled territory. If hshe has been there it doesn't necessarily mean she has moved on.Last edited: 2014-04-20 18:58:07 by michief
Gilo
Spoke to land owner, got the all clear for the trap and it is now in situ but not set. Food inside and out. Yesterday's food had gone this morning, before 7am. Worringly we had a potential sitting at 12:15 am back towards Berry Pomeroy but the lady felt she was short legged ( which she isnt, she's the size of our larger collie). However, it was dark and how many stray black dogs are seen in one area?! We can but try. Fingers crossed the trap food is gone in the morning. Will be viewing trap site from 5.30am.
michief
Good luck!
Esther
Best of luck

Trap collected. Long but fruitful day again.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I was given your landline Gilo, I will try again later or you may be able to pick up my number as last caller. I can probably meet you part way to save you coming all the way.
Gilo
Poochpal, no joy from Paignton Zoo, RSPCA or local animal charities. I think you are our closet. I saw Fly this morning follow the drag track I laid yesterday, go to the feeding station and then eat everything I left out. We need a trap ASAP now according to Ray so was hoping we could borrow yours please?! Can drive up tomorrow morning!
Esther
poochpal. I think it would be a really good idea to have a section on doglost with advice on how to catch more long term lost dogs. There are people with so much knowledge and expertise it would be useful to be able to share that amongst us. Really good luck with Fly today, hope there will be good news soon.
michief
New dog traps are about £160. Just in case you don't already know.
Gilo
I think I must have missed the Paignton Zoo comment - will try tomorrow. I called the RSPCA in Exeter twice yesterday but no one was available to answer and they were closed by the time I got back today. I guess the Easter holidays are effecting staff levels. Will speak to Ray too.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I suggested on an earlier post that Paignton zoo may have one, I also have one which belongs to doglost but it is in Dorset if Ray has trouble sending his.
Don't know why this post has gone on twice, sorry.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I suggested on an earlier post that Paignton zoo may have one, I also have one which belongs to doglost but it is in Dorset if Ray has trouble sending his.
Gilo
No trap yet. Our dog warden has no access. Ray was going to see about. Sending one down.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Good point me n my girl, we do have a general advice sheet which we try to send to owners when a dog first goes missing which has similar tips but it is not often that they need to go to these lengths to catch a missing dog. The whole site is going to have a revamp soon so I will suggest a section and maybe Jayne will talk to Ray about having a link to his site, after all it is Ray who deserves the credit.
DogLostMe N My Girl - Administrative Volunteer
Poochpal shouldn't we have somewhere on site that Rays valuable information could be kept for future refernce and for everbody to see, rather than thinking in say a years time " I remember a posting about dragging and trapping" but where was it. People that haven't looked at the shelties page or flys page won't see it. Perhaps it's just me and my aged memory LOL
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Well done team Fly - proves you are in the right place and she's slowed down at last. Almost there.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Well done, I'm sure your hard work will bring results soon. Do you have access to a trap?
Gilo
Good day so far. Went out with a couple of others late morning to lay a couple of drag tracks and we saw her! We were far enough away ( we spotted her with binoculars) that we were able to hide, sit quietly and watch her. She laid sown for a few minutes then slowly walked up a tractor track in a field. Looked calm. Trotted for a few yards then slow walk. Tail up. Gentle pant but it's hot out today. She was heading in our general direction so we retreated and watched from a vantage point. Must have gone in other direction as didn't see her again. When back an hour or so later and drag trailed that area again. Didn't see her after that.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Edited the last post to make it a little more general, this should work for any hungry dog, come on fly, enough now, time you were caught. Is a trap available yet?
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Thank you everyone, I have given the advice Rayded gave on a previous dog (a sheltie).

DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Thanks Rayded :)

Fly is a lurcher, so need to bare in mind that she is at least half SIGHT HOUND they are different to other breeds in how they percieve the world. I'll email Poochpal as she has some excellent advice for attracting sight hounds to add. However, please remember the nom nom softly approach to gain her trust that I sent owner.
RAYDEDICOAT
hi again, please see lost dog poppy 66926, may be usefull to read, than listening to me rambling on!! good she,s staying around..by all means drag trail those tunnels as well..
Gilo
Sounds like her Michief as we has a call from someone saying they had spotted her in a field near Widdicombe farm just around 9am. Got some extra info from Ray last night as I was a bit worried about laying a scent trail from this region to our feeding point as it will cross the compton road. He said to do it regardless as she is obviously crossing it. Will do it at the speed bumps by the castle though!
michief
Info:- There are two tunnels under the Ringroad. One at Gallows Gate and one at Marldon roundabout near Occombe.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Encouraging that Fly is in the same area. Emailed owner calming signals information link.
michief
I have had a report of a loose dark dog about her size standing stationary looking toward the ringroad from the minor road 50.462654,-3.589804. Appeared to just be calmly watching. Reporter did not get a good look because she was driving. 8.50 am today.Last edited: 2014-04-17 09:57:16 by michief
Gilo
Another sighting by the team in the same area. We will be scenting this field early evening.
Gilo
No problem poochpal -we all want the same outcome. As for her whereabouts Bobble, yes she has crossed the A380. In fact worryingly she was seen on the day on day one, two and three missing. No word that has happened since Saturday though. On the positive, there is also a little farm track that runs underneath the road if she is desperate to get the other side. Sighting today at 10am was near Love Lane, Marldon village. We are following Rays plan, have even typed up action plan sheets! We had a BBQ last night too, but she was then seen over the other side of the valley! Will try this again tomorrow though. Thanks for all the encouragement.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
Home from work now and have a little more time to have a good look . I hope I didn't sound too critical in this morning's post, I just wanted to get the message across before dashing off to work.
Brilliant that Ray has been in touch and given advice, he is so experienced. You are all doing so well, I'm sure it won't be long before she is safe.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
so has she crossed the A380 to Marldon or is it Marldon Road area? Is it possible (work family commitments allowing) that Gilo and Michief could set up a sort of shift pattern? BBQ with some strong smelling sausages or meat to attract her then keep a familiar item to help gain her confidence. It's not so much that she has lost trust in people, they go into a flight mindset and as it says she is a recent rescue timid dog. A recent one I had like this, very similar situation, we just had to take it steady and by feeding her actually got the little dog into a garden where she was caught. I know you can do this - you are doing so well and are a great team.
michief
That's good, now you have to win her confidence and trap her. I am still keeping out, but only because I don't want to accidentally thwart your attempts to trap her. Don't hesitate to contact me if she needs locating again. I am still watching your posts too. Good luck.
Gilo
Had word she was spotted in a field at 10 am this morning in the Marldon area so she seems to be staying within the one region.
Gilo
Thanks for all your help Michief. I will be in contact if shes seen out with Compton again.
michief
I will keep away, unless she moves to a different area and needs locating again then. If she disappears again, let me know by txt to 0770 8850933.Last edited: 2014-04-16 10:32:12 by michief
Gilo
Thanks Michief. Now that we have established she has lost trust in all people we are going to concentrate on sightings and leaving food in the same area until we get a pattern established to make a trap viable. I will not be out tonight - our other dogs have forgotten what I look like! I think the team will reduce to a core three or four, just walking the area, no calling, and food left at a sheltered spot where she has been seen most. Ray Dedicoate was the one who called us last night so is very experienced and we will be following his lead.
michief
Walked early morning in the general area Luscombe Lane to Compton cross country with the acquintance and his dog that was followed at Berry Pomeroy. We took kipper and Liver treats and crinkly paper to rustle like crisp packets and other food pellets so she could see my friends dog eating to bribe her. I thought fly might follow the same dog again but no sign of her where we looked. Last edited: 2014-04-16 09:56:27 by michief
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Please be careful not to flood the area with helpers, it is a softly softly, watching approach that is required now to see where she is going, as you say then you'll know the best place for the trap. However, once a place is established, set up a feeding station with a little amount of food to get her used to feeding there, BEFORE using a trap. Not heard of HART?
Gilo
Ray from HART called us after we posted last night - after we spent the journey home from the two sightings saying 'we need to speck to someone for advice'! Impeccably timed. Lots of new advice. Spoke to the bulk of the people going out again today so they are aware. Now asking just for sightings to help us pick out the ideal trap position.

Mmmm. Bolted both times when called, please see the wording on the poster, "PLEASE DO NOT CALL HER" that was put on for a reason. I know it is so frustrating for you all but if seen please don't say a word, turn sideways on to her and drop down low, she will know you are there and will be watching you. Toss some treats/smelly food on the ground not directly at her but away from yourself and sit quietly an wait. It will take time and patience to win her trust.
If you feel a trap is needed Paignton zoo may be able to help I think the nearest doglost one is in Dorset.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Trap seems like a good idea, try and keep an eye in the area, quietly to see where and when Fly is coming and going to see if there is a pattern/route. You are all doing brilliantly, just wish I was there to help you.
Gilo
Oh the frustration. Seen by the team twice this evening after the tip off. Bolted as soon as she was called both times. Wondering if we might have to start looking at a trap. She seems to keep returning to the same spot.
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Oh good luck, softly softly once you spot Fly. x
Gilo
Call from farmers wife. Spotted minutes ago in a field near Widdicombe farm holiday park/Compton. All heading there now. Please Fly let yourself come home!
DogLostBobble - Area Co-ordinator - Somerset & East Sussex
Gilo and Michief you are doing such good work, just wish Fly would stay in one place to make it easier for you. Might be time to get a portable BBQ out and try and entice her if she's hungry?
michief
Good luck. If she stays this side of the Ringroad you should get more frequent sightings. Maybe she is comoing home. I do hope so.
Gilo
The spotter on Ramshill Road has looked at photos and says it was definetly her. This is quite built up and near a busy A road. Eek.
Gilo
Someone has just posted on facebook that a friends son possibly saw Fly on Ramshill Road, Paignton, yesterday afternoon. Its not fas from last sighting, near to the fields that would link that area up, but definitely the most urban area she would have been too since leaving Preston on Thursday. Prehaps it wasnt her or maybe shes getting braver as she is hungry? Will poster the area this afternoon.Last edited: 2014-04-15 13:52:01 by Gilo

That figures. There is a pond of water fowl on route between East Hills Woods and BP village.
Gilo
Hubby just had call from lady who lives in Berry Pomeroy to say she saw her in the village on Sunday also. Then obviously she was spotted 'soaking wet' running from BP towards the Marldon direct but then turning off.

Just found out an acquintance of mine saw an unaccompanied "black and tan short coated farm collie cross" dog in the woods near Berry Pomeroy last Sunday. He is not sure if it is her. He says the colour was right but it had longer legs. It was following his dog but would not let him touch it. He did not think of reporting it because he just assumed it was from one of the farms nearby and was supposed to be loose on that land - he assumed its owners owned the land. Appromimate location 50.448569,-3.646581 East Hill woods (warning very muddy path). It followed him to the field just before Gatcombe Brook where his dog growled at it and it ran back into the woods. He did not look whether it was male of female. Could have been just a farm Collie as he says, but it is a possibilty.

We have to both go back to work today but our fab friends are still out searching. At least my partner is a delivery driver for the local area and can drive through the sites shes been spotted. The team will indeed walk parts of the John Musgrove Trail today and poster at points along. The stye previously meantion was postered at 7am this morning. I drove the Berry Pomeroy Road today and saw nothing. A traffic survey is being performed in Marldon - they have been spoken to and given flyers. Last edited: 2014-04-15 10:19:33 by Gilo

I have had a good look at all the places other than the red herrings at Torquay and Barton and it is clear she is following well walked foot tracks. She is following where other dogs have walked and as those are accompanied the follow the main foot routes through the countryside. Personally I would poster the biggest most frequently waled one. the John Musgrove Trail between Cockington and Totnes at the moment. Berry Pomeroy is on this. She seems to be following where dogs walk most frequently and this trail is a rural hotspot for dog walkers.
That stile is on that trail.Last edited: 2014-04-14 22:58:24 by michief

Getting more posters printed tomorrow am and that will be the first one up! Will also do more in Marldon - I think there are some already there. We leafleted the houses in Berry Pomeroy this evening too.
michief
It is only 2 miles from Maldon to Berry Pomeroy cross country (John Musgrove trail) over that stile I told you about. I really think you should Poster that style. All these places are close together cross country. Dog walkers walk between them all all the time on those tracks.
DogLostPoochpal - Regional Co-ordinator - South West - Police Liaison Team
I keep checking in to see if there are any sightings, bumping due to this latest one.If only the calls would come while still in sight. You are doing a great job though and it should all pay off soon.
Gilo
We have had a call this evening from a lady who says she saw a dog looking just like Fly on the Berry Pomeroy Road at 8am this morning, turning towards Barton. The team spent the whole day in Compton again to no avail. A few of the team are in Berry Pomeroy now but the light is beating them.
Gilo
Thanks Michief - much appreciated. Railtrack were only going to call back if there was anything to report and I havent heard anything. The food left in Compton was untouched - bit odd as I thought at least a fox would have eaten it - but this is even more suggestive she has moved on. South Hams, Teignbridge and Exeter dog wardens all aware if she is sighted somewhere else.
michief
Just spent lunch time walking near the Rail Line from Shiphay Lane to Hamlyn Way. (I work at the hospital). Able to walk with view of track for most of it. I could not see anything untoward on of near the line. I think the roads are more of a danger than the rail anyway. Trains are not very frequent on that line. We watch out of the office window and there aren't many. most of the time she could cross without problem. I think she is safe in field or woods somewhere where you can't observe her. Makes the task hard for you, but safer for her!
Gilo
Will do, thank you Michief. Have driven through there a few times but dont think we have postered there - we need to get more posters printed as handing them out as well now. I have logged her missing with Railtrack today. Its a horrible thought to think that something rail related may have happened to her but the sighting in Edginswell and at the bottom of Hamlin Way means she hasn't been too far from the track. Praying thats not the case. Dog warden contacted, no news from their end so we have updated them with the weekends developments. A Great Dane has been spotted and photographed (Ive seen the picture) in Barton, wearing a red collar which I think is where some of our red hearing sightings have come from. We are greatful none-the-less that people are keeping a look out and reporting it to us quickly.
michief
It looks like she has gone into the wilder areas now, away from where most people go. I would also poster the stile at 50°27'38.0"N 3°36'08.2"W which would be seen by many long distance rural dog walkers who may well walk far enough in the rural areas far from roads to spot her. hint:-
cut and paste coordinates in Google maps to see where to find stile. That particular route will get many of the very long distance walkers who go far from roads.

You could also contact South Devon Ramblers who walk a lot in these rural areas you can't get cars to. 01803 529052

Cockington was postered on Saturday - we went with the theory of alerting as many dog owners/walkers as possible. With it being a nice weekend they might have been out and about a bit more. Being stopped lots today on the Compton Road but still no sightings. Over 36 hours now. Hoping the fact its Monday morning and things will start opening up again might bring some news.
michief
Compton etc is not very far across fields from Cockington. There is a network of tracks dogs and walkers use to go there and Marldon and Berry Pomeroy from Cockington. I would poster Cockington. that way the long distance dog walkers that use the John Musgrove trail and other trails in the area might spot her.
michief
I expect she is getting food and water the same way as urban foxes do I.e. savaging. Goind down bins and picking up dropped food from pavements. The trouble is, she is in fairly rural terrain where she will not be sighted very often. At last in those sort of places she is safer from cars though.
Gilo
All sightings turned out to be from yesterday. Nothing today despite being out all day and spreading the word. Left food at a spot where she has been seen a few times in hope. Over 24 hours with no sightings. Very worried.

Maybe a tin of sardines ?

Gosh, she's covering some ground. You are all doing a wonderful job team Fly, maybe soon....? Hope you've all got some nice smelling tasty treats in pockets to attract her attention when you do get near enough?
Gilo
Beacon kennels and Dainton golf course now contacted.
Gilo
Reports of a sighting in North Wilbourough. Focusing there.
michief
Compton is quite near Marldon where beacon kennels and cattery is, so it may be an idea to let them know fly is missing in case anyone takes her/him there
Gilo
Been in Compton for a few hours. Not seen a thing. No sightings from anyone. Area well pestered. Come on Fly. :(
Gilo
Lots of sightings today. In such varied places we think it might be that there was another dog loose in Torquay similar to Fly. A friend spotted Fly in Compton so we were back there this evening. No luck tonight, but we will go back tomorrow. Thanks to Luke for the heads up. Thanks to everyone else out there for keeping up the search.
michief
No signs along the river edge or the cycle path between Ashprington and Totnes today unfortunately.
Gilo
Possibly seen again this afternoon in Barchington Ave, Barton but person sad very muscular grey hound, which in good light I wouldn't of thought she would be described as. Heading over now though.
Gilo
Two potential sightngs in the Torquay area - both of a dog running free - on in Barton at 9pm, one in Shiphay at 11.30pm. Finding it difficult to target a search but postering those areas. Please keep a look out if you are there.Last edited: 2014-04-12 10:42:26 by Gilo

Sad to report we have not seen nor heard anything today about Flys whereabouts today. I went back to Orley woods again this evening, when it was nice and quite but saw nothing but our posters. We feel she may have moved on else where but alerts now out to wider area and we are spreading the word to Totnes, Denbury, Newton Abbot. Hopefully she will be spotted tomorrow. Thanks all for the help.
michief
I will walk from Ashprington to Totnes tomorrow in case he/she is there.
AnimalsIn Distress
Any sightings today?
Gilo
South Hams dog warden informed and very helpful. Will also call Exeter. Foredown contacted yesterday. Many thanks AID for adding her to your lost list.
AnimalsIn Distress
It might be worth informing both the South Hams and Exeter Dog wardens? Have you informed Foredowne Kennels as they are the holding kennels for the local councils? I have now added her details on to our lost and found list as no one had informed us that she had been lost.
Gilo
Search resumed at 5am over in Ipplepen but no luck. Postering the area and moving towards Totnes way as all fields in that area. Teignbridge do warden now involved.
michief
is this dog heading for the Dog shelter near Ipplepen. Is that where he/she came from?
Gilo
Last seen in wood land on Orley Road, Ipplepen. Obviously very hungry and thirsty but still ran off when offered food by search team. She has been on the run all day. Most of us calling it a night, back out at first light.

Almost caught by a dog walker in Ipplepen village. Really covering ground! We are on the move again.

Any news of FLYS whereabouts ? I have asked dog walkers I've bumped into to keep an eye out . I hope he's safe
Gilo
Apparently spotted near the ring road so heading there now. Fingers crossed.
Gilo
Out searching all day and nothing. Was also apparently seen on Torquay sea front this morning. Dog warden contacted again but no news :( This dog has had a rough ride already and we are devastated. Show your yourself Fly. Ox mince for tea xx
Gilo
Fly bolted at 7am this morning. Jumped the fence and ran off in the shorten valley road area in Preston, Paignton. We have shared on Facebook and someone states they saw Fly running through Torquay town centre at 7.15 so if this is correct has already covered a distance. Dog warden and local vets aware. Search party out looking. All your help is terrifically appreciated.
michief
I am sure I have met this dog in the not too distant past. Probably it is one of the dogs my dog has met in the last month. I can't quite place it but the name is familiar too, so I will try my hardest.
Mrs
Please can we have more details of how Fly was lost and where he went missing. This is a huge area. If it can be narrowed down that will help. I can cover Berry Head and Brixham but is he likely to be this far away from Paignton?
michief
I will keep an eye open in the Clennon Valley TQ4 area. Is that one of the areas she ever visits on her walks? I will also post a poster of lamp posts in Roselands and White Rock.
