Terrier lady - was she friendly (squiggles etc) when you scooped her in your arms? Is she a Yorkie? Really looking forward to the updates on her. Well done again. You must have been beyond thrilled seeing her in the cage safe and sound. X
lesleyjane
How wonderful, well done all of you!! Looking forward to further updates. x
terrierlady
I cant tell you how relieved we all are to have caught her - 3rd time lucky - she managed to get the food from the trap twice and escape(second time the door was closed but no dog - still cant work that one out) however after only half an hr we loaded it again and she was in there within 5 minutes. She is resting up now safe secure and warm - will be scanned tomorrow will let you know what happens. Need some sleep now as not had much all week - but well worth it and would do it all again.

Did you manage to transport that trap? I rang a few taxy firms in Morpeth but quoted £60 for the journey. Yikes! It's only about 30-35 miles.

Hi Rushy87, yes the people typing to catch this dog are in contact with the owners of the empty house who have been very helpful and they are looking along similar lines to the one you suggest.
Thr helpers went to collect a cat trap last night but decided or was too small for this dog so I gave them contact details for another source to borrow a trap from who have very kindly agreed to help.
If a trap is set up it WILL BE MONITORED CONSTANTLY !
Edited to add to reply to Lias Gaffney that one of the ladies trying to catch this dog is not certain that it is a Yorkie and thinks it could possible be a Lakeland x JRT. The trouble is this little dog is rushing about so quickly it's hard to get a proper look at him/ her. Last edited: 2014-01-25 18:49:29 by Jumanji - Co-ordinator.South.Yorkshire

Wickedweims - there is a riding centre that does dog agility etc near Morpeth and it may be worth getting in touch with them as they may know someone who is going to a show or heading south in that direction, my sister has a few show ponies and they are up and down the country every weekend.
Link is here http://thepegasuscentre.org.uk/

Thanks Wickedweims x I have edited your post to avoid any confusion as the matter is now sorted and we no longer need to make the appeal x Last edited: 2014-01-25 18:51:24 by Jumanji - Co-ordinator.South.Yorkshire

Does anyone know who owns the property where the dog returns to? Just wondering if the owner of the property could be contacted to see if they can help, for example leaving the door open to see if the dog enters the house (obviously watching nearby). Long shot just hope this little one is caught very soon xx

Has she got a docked tail and short hair just hoping she might be mine

I have spoken to Lesley this afternoon.
Terrier lady as you say people do need to be discouraged from feeding this dog as you really only need one feeding station but sometimes it's hard to get this across :((
If a trap is to be set up please don't make it public knowledge that you are doing so or where the feeding station is . If too many people know they may try to help but may In fact drive this dog away. It really just needs a small group of a few people to work together and something really smelly, tempting and special to go in the trap so that even if he/ she is picking up other titbits they will not be able to resist going in for the food.
Terrier lady I will try to get your contact details and give you a call x x

Good idea ref posters asking folk to ignore her as rescuing her is in hand. Thoughts with you.
terrierlady
I can get a feral cat trap - Pat at the Ark on the Edge has kindly offered this. However from what i understand we need to keep feeding her in the same spot each time where her shelter is - so that she continues to come back to that spot where we can eventually replace the shelter with a covered trap - i have helped trap feral ctas previously for neuter. I also have hutch warmers which stay warm for up to 12 hrs whcih i could put in the shelter inside the bedding. The big problem is that well meaning people dont understand not to throw titbits out and are chasing her in the hope of catching her - hoping to do soem leaflets to advise them not to do this as this is hampering us catching her.
Bo
I tried to street view but no joy. Can you get hold of the trap? Would it be possible to put a hot water bottle in there for tonight wrapped in a blanket? Having done survival course (I am in the military!), on survival exercises we used to build a fire and put large stones in it to heat up - then when we slept outside we would wrap the stone in clothing and sleep with it because they take AGES to release the heat and will last all night for her in that den you created. Thankyou Bo for suggestions - I have been told by my sister that she has appeared again today and has almost been hit by cars on a few occasions so something needs to be done as soon as possible. Its no easy task because as soon as she sees you she is off like a rocket and most of the gardens on the estate are open plan.

Terrier lady
I've no experience of catching scared dogs but the experts all seem to advise make no eye contact, ignore the dog and take a noisy crisp bag making yum yum sounds whilst throwing a bit of food down. Don't talk to the dog and sit down feigning no interest whatsoever whilst pretending to eat. I've experience of catching horses by this method (ignore and walk away.. eventually they follow) as pack animals always want to join up with company. May be worth speaking to the organisation below as there are some big pussy cats out there, my mothers moggie is a "monster" in both size and temperament.
terrierlady
Thanks everyone for suggestions - Not sure a normal size cat trap would be big enough as she has longer legs than an average yorkie but i know where i can buy one and will do if i have to. Sadly she hasnt been seen for the past few hours probaly due to well meaning people attempting to catch her. Just hope she hasnt moved on somehwere else. Have made her a waterproof den tonight and put it in on the porch where she has often been sighted with plenty of bedding + food and water.
Bo
Farplace Animal Rescue (Bishop Auckland) may have a suitable trap.

Try contacting the local Cat's protection branch and ask if they will lend you a trap. This little dog is tiny so a cat trap should be big enough. They use traps all the time to catch feral cats and they are not cruel at all.

I have posted on another dog forum to see if anyone can help with a trap/advice.

Poor little soul, hope she can be caught soon.
terrierlady
Completely at a loss as to what to do here - Dog wardens came and they couldnt catch her which is no surprise as they were warned she was people shy - we have made a den for her, left food out etc but hse is still not approachable - my sister asked dog warden if a trap would help he said no they dont use them as they are cruel!!!!- so no real help at all - if anyone can offer help with a trap then please let me know - its becoming quite desperate now as well meaning people are attempting to catch her on the estate which could drive her onto the main road. Its also getting extremely cold.
AlisonH
Is there someone who could make a little waterproof den for her and pop it next to the doorstep that she keeps going back to then at least she will have some warmth. Put a little bit of wet food such as sardines at the back of the den. It might take a few days to gain her trust but it's worth a try and eventually you may be able get close enough to catch her.
terrierlady
Still not caught - Poor little thing is at the moment curled up in a ball on the step of the empty house so is obviously going back to that house all the time. We know he/she does not belong to the fomrer occupants but she could have been owned by the house next door who have now moved on. Suppose the bonus is that she is returning to the same spot on a regular basis - My sister has called the dog warden again but she needs to be handled very carefully as she spooks very easily.

terrierlady
If someone could cross post to Dog Theft Awareness County Durham FB it would be much appreciated as i dont do facebook.
terrierlady
Just returned from looking for this dog and twice we found her sitting on different door steps on the Leech estate (Lower part of Ullswater avenue closest to the A68 entrance) one of them an empty house - she is just too frightened to come anywhere near and runs off as soon as she realises you are there - heartbreaking as she is obviously trying to get in somewhere - only slightly built with pointed ears and so painfully thin as well - we gave up eventually as didnt want to drive her down to the main road but set up a shelter and some food outside my sisters house in a sheltered area. Looks like a trap is going to be needed - so if anyone can help with that ring Lesley on 07980 483841Last edited: 2014-01-22 22:32:07 by terrierlady
