Hello All! I think we need to take the idea of a national protest about dog theft a step further by deterring the crime in the first place, re Emma's experience, expressing that there are reasons you cannot steal dogs or buy them. Or buy puppies from inhumane puppy farms. We should be showing that it is only unethical vets that don't scan animals on a regular basis. And only those that are knowingly encouraging dog trading and farming that are paying for dogs without papers. We have to reverse trends so that the only money that ever changes hands for a dog is done through registered breeders and the kennel club. I do wish that some people would volunteer with me and Pat and Candy to help co-ordinate nationwide simultaneous protests in all major and suburban parks in May. It is important that we make a people's protest into a canine protest and that lots of individuals cooperate to involve all the organisations that are already working to combat dog theft. JASPBENSWOOD, you have the right idea and Lionel Blair has been very active - lots of other celeb dog owners would be too, given enough notice. But I think it should all be on one day so that local and national print and TV news can't ignore it. A Saturday in May would be ideal in news terms for a string of demos in parks and I will canvas national news journalists to find a Saturday in May that is likely to be light on national news - perhaps the Bank Holiday weekend. BTW - seven short haired chihuahuas were stolen yesterday (Sunday) see chihuahua.meetup.com for more details.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Lori, had a phone call over the weekend from a lady with Papillons who was at the demonstration, she thought it was a wonderful idea and should be taken further. Dolly 6.2.05Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

In Manchester - I'm up for that!! Preferably not on my own though!! Anyone interested PM me and we'll get something sorted! Vic x PS Might I suggest we do a city a month - I'm sure Jayne could provide us with details of most thefts/missing so we can target those area's first. x Take Dolly's directive with us - get awareness!! Re; celeb idea - didn't Lionel Blair's dog go missing recently?????? I'm pretty sure he'd be willing to attend!! It was definitely in one of the national papers a couple of weeks ago and I emailed the journalist to ask him to refer Mr Blair to Doglost - don't know if anything came of it though as I had no response!! I hope I've got the right celebrities name to the right face or I could end up with egg on mine!!! Tap dancing man - ring any bells??Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Linda - you and lots of good people would have been there if they could. What about finding a date in May? Lots of notice, lots of RSVPs, lots of press, some celebs and a rally in every major city? I don't see why this shouldn't work in a 'nation of dog lovers'. I'm not the right person to try to plan this. Until I have my dog back, she is my sole priority. So it would be great to find able volunteers who would involve lots of other people and preferably don't already represent an existing organisation, so that all organisations can be represented - that would be great. Any takers?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm so glad it went well for you. I think you are right with more notice the turnout would have been larger, then people just might sit up and take notice, I so wanted to be there, but it was just impossible, but I was thinking about you this afternoon. Well done you are doing your bit and highlighting the plight of these little dogs.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

THANKS to everyone who was there! We were about 20 dogs and 20 people and I got a bit upset to see so many little dogs all happy and carefree and safe. Sometimes you feel that you've let your dog down. ANYWAY, re awareness, nearly got BBC Breakfast and nearly got the Times. So I think this is a good idea - with proper notice and planning and a few celebs, and Dolly's Directive to be signed, we should try again and I'm sure we can make it really effective. Ideas for slogans would be good, what about BARKING MAD ABOUT DOG THEFT...?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Pat - let's see a good turnout of people and dogs. It's not enough to just say that this is happening, vets have to co-operate and so do those who are buying our dogs. there may well be innocent buyers, let's change their innocence to awareness. By the way, I think I have 2 extra t-shirts saying Little Boo Wants to Come Home and no one to wear them - any offers? Slip it on in the park?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

hi everyone if something else could be arranged for regents park i would love to come but kensington etc is a hot spot for dog theft and i'd have to use public transport to get there but i really think that some one should lobby an mp to reinstate to dog licence incorperating the chipping and allow vets authority to check every dog that comes in as a patient i have already sent the observer article to 10 downing street but if every body else did maybe collectively we'd get somewhere. incidently balou went missing just over two hours after national lottery millionaires mansion featured a chi and said she was worth ???? which alarmed me at the time then two days later i see balous poster who knows a member of parliment who is an animal lover ?somebody needs to seriously do something about this pearlLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

That's not to say you don't need to come this Sunday - PLEASE do - we need to build on a roll of awareness, and if we wait an entire 2 weeks, the press might be bored of us - let's keep it topical. Great sympathy to the Lionel Blair family, and let's hope they come as well on Sunday. Lori xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi the PP Messenger - Might indeed be an idea to hold regional Dog Demos running on from this one, particularly in the dense theft areas. maybe some of the website regulars could organise them. They'd all get local press coverage. Wishing you all the best. I'm away this Sunday, but with you in thought. It's time we hit back against this unacceptable crime. love xx Great idea xx, are you willing to co-ordinate? I can give you all my existing contacts if it would help. Yours is a great idea to alert more people to the notion that buying a dog down the pub is a bad idea. Vets being more alert, etc. I've removed your name, but posted this up to see who will promote in different areas. What about 2 weeks from now - Sunday 5th March - dog rallies around the country, nationwide - DOGS AGAINST THEFT. Lots of dogs in one place, chaotically, great pictures for any paper and not hard to organise - I came up with this idea on Wed night - have a job too - so let's see what happens Sunday! If we do a nationwide and regional DOGS AGAINST THEFT (including another London one) in two weeks time, surely there will be a lot of press regionally and maybe also nationally if this HydePark thing doesn't quite cut it because of short notice... I will be there in spirit but unfortunately I can't make it this weekend. I really hope this helps to spread the word about this horrendous crime. I pray it also brings Balou and many others home safely to their rightful owners. I wish you the best of luck with this. RxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
