Ian
I just received an email notification of choowie74 posting about blackdog/cc5kfkp0
I dont know how to view this.
Incidentally, a month ago I received Penny's id disc ( seen on her additional photo which was taken as she peered in the window the day she went missing. The disc was found by a metal detectorist in a field of a farm fairly close to home.

Sorry for the delay, but she is not Penny.

Hi Fiona I have just phoned Ian,owner of Penny, and he said to say thank you for text and he will check it out but his internet connection is down at the moment. He will let me know when he's lookednd will text back to let me know yay or nay. Thank you so much for thinking of Penny x
Fiona
Check out found spaniel id 81367 cant see all of her chest to see how much white she has, but worth a look.
ClaireC
Never say never!
Happiness yorkie lover xxx
The saving grace is her microchip x one day you will be together xxxxx
Ellie&4Collies
Almost a year since you were last 'bumped' Penny and two years since you went missing, still hoping your found!Last edited: 2014-12-28 21:26:25 by Ellie&4Collies
Tobys Mum
Still watching and waiting here too. Thank goodness she is chipped, I keep reading about farm raids and pray that one day Penny may be one of them xx
Ellie&4Collies
Hi Ian, just wanted to say I haven't been on this site for a very long time and just checked in to see if Penny has been found. I'm so sorry you haven't got her home yet - Don't give up hope. I have watched your story from the start Ian and will pop to the other page and see if Jill has been found. Penny hasn't been forgotten x
ClaireC
So sorry its not Penny x
Ian
Thanks. Have posted a response on 70462 on its page.
Fiona
Check out found dog 70462, no gender stated, very similar chest markings to Penny. Good luck.
ClaireC
Ian, yes that would be just such a nice reward. This girl has got her own fan club with 80 followers! Both Penny and now also Jill need to be looked out for if anybody is going to any of the Fairs around the country to have a look around! xLast edited: 2014-03-20 08:32:55 by ClaireC
Ian
Thanks Claire for monitoring this. I think she owes you an appearance the effort you put in!
ClaireC
No problem Shelagh, thank you so much for looking x
Shelagh
Managed to get pic now definitely not penny. This one much older not enough white, and more lab than anything else.sorry
ClaireC
Hi Shelagh can you post the link I can't seem to find it. Penny is Collie Cross/Spaniel rather than a Lab though.
Shelagh
Alfies lost dogs xbreeds found lab spaniel x black with white markings? No sex and breed questionable. Newcastle council websute01782717717. Bit out of area but guessing maybe worth a look. Good luck

See Jill 63994 Ian has had her Stolen & only a puppy :(
ClaireC
Hi Ian has there been any news or sightings recently? x
Ian
Your'e rigbt Claire its not Penny. Thanks Woo sips.
ClaireC
Hi Woo Sips I look at that found dog earlier but I did rule out Penny on account of the found one has white on all four paws and top of nose whereas Penny doesn't. I think Penny is a bit smaller and I personally think the found dog is more Lab cross. However, I would just love to be proved wrong and get Penny home. xxLast edited: 2014-01-06 18:38:01 by ClaireC
Woo sips
Sorry if this is not your dog but please can you check just to rule it out? Dog found ref 62604. I hope you find her x
ClaireC
Thank you Tobys Mum and a Happy New Year to you as well xx
Tobys Mum
Happy New Year to you Ian (and Claire who comes here often too). Let us hope that 2014 is the year that she gets to meet little Jill. Still think of Penny often, especially when the weather is as bad as it has been xx
B30
Advertised in this weeks Countryman's Weekly magazine. I hope it brings some news.

Come on Penny, you have a little sister waiting at home for you XX
ClaireC
Hi Ian, great to hear that you got yourself another girl! Just need Penny to come home and meet her. I do so hope my wish for 2014 comes true and that is that she does this one thing for us all. xx
Ian
Merry xmas to you too Claire and everyone else on here. The best present I could get would be a sighting of Penny to know she is ok. I have a companion for her now a 13 week old rescue Sprollie pup called Jill.
ClaireC
Hi Ian would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and sincerely hope that Penny "turns herself in" during 2014 which is my wish for you xx
ClaireC
Oh I do hope so. Would love to this girl back home now. Thank you. Good luck xx
Ellie
Bumping Penny's page as she is featured in the DogLost column of the January edition of Dogs a Today magazine, out now. I do hope it brings some news.
SaffySP
Great news! Fingers crossed there's another sighting of her soon xx
ClaireC
Oh I and probably many others still believe she is out there and just need to be in the right place at the right time. Hopefully she likes chicken and will show herself again there. Penny time to get yourself home its been 1 year far too long! Last edited: 2013-11-29 16:23:08 by ClaireC
Ian
Within 20 mins I was searching all the fields bounded by the road railway prison and Peace Farm. Ive visited the farmer at the poultry unit who will keep an eye out.I'm not going to chase her as if this is credible she should show herself again.
Ian
I had a call today from a friend who thi ks he saw Penny croszing a field of wbeat between Long Lartin Prison and Peace poultry farm Honeybourne. That is on the back drive to Grove Farm the place she went missing from. Within20
ClaireC
Still always cross checking.xx
Tobys Mum
Still watching and waiting here too Claire and Ian. Always hope that I will pop in one day and Penny will be blue xx
ClaireC
Come on Penny time to get yourself seen and home now xx
ClaireC
Have been over to your neck of the woods this past few days. Haven't seen anything out in the fields but did see a man in Broadway walking two dogs, one of which did look very much like Penny. By the time I found somewhere to park up I couldn't find him/them again. He didn't look like a tourist but more like somebody local and was walking towards the housing estate going out of Broadway heading in the direction of Evesham road. Just nearby is the hardware shop. I have asked my daughter to keep a lookout in this area as she is often in the Broadway area.xLast edited: 2013-11-03 12:44:22 by ClaireC
ClaireC
What about this Found dog ID 58338
A male dog might draw Penny in as a thought.
ClaireC
I know it does make you wonder doesn't it! Keep trying though. There is a Dogs Trust Rescue Centre in Evesham I've passed a few times - what about making contact with them?
Ian
No sightings Claire. Last week I applied to adopt an abandoned 6 yr old Sprollie called Clara i Llanelli but after filling an online application eas telephoned to be told mine would not be an acceptable home for any rescue dog.I'm sure they think as a farmer the dog would not get an appropriate level of love and companionship.Seems so odd to make descisions like that without meeting.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, any news or sightings of Penny?
Ian
Thanks ladies. Ive temporarily lost the plot!
Nora
Clair, that is why I missed the white paws at first, got excited too Last edited: 2013-09-20 07:26:27 by Nora
ClaireC
I got quite excited too Nora but the white is on the wrong paws - damn it! Thanks for checking though.x
Nora
Date found 11/9 so not F/B dog, and on closer inspection of photo this one has white on her front paws, unlike Penny, sorry Ian
Nora
I havnt seen the one on facebook but i have just seen found PR3 ID no 57393, black collie x spaniel, poster picture not very clear, is it the one on FB or another one found, looks very similar to PennyLast edited: 2013-09-17 08:52:32 by Nora
ClaireC
Hi Ian, so sorry that you have not seen Penny at the moment. I'm sure she will pop up again. If you are interested in adopting the dog on facebook may I suggest that you put a comment on. I'm sorry but I dont have a facebook account. Good luck on both counts. Will still keep looking for Penny as does my daughter when out walking xx
Ian
No news from my end Claire. I have been working round the clock harvesting these past few weeks. Shortly I shall find time to check the location where the stray was taken and eliminate the doubt. I had hoped with most of the crops harvested she would show again. Here's hoping. Yes I had seen the Spaniel on Facebook, its not Penny but I would be interested in homing her if the owners don't show up.
ClaireC
It does actually say chipped to the Swindown area and just wondered what has happened to the dog's owner from Swindon!
DogLostFergal - Area Volunteer - Cornwall
This one is circulating on FB so you may have already seen it, seems to be less white on neck but that could be just the way the fur is lying, seems to have a little white on back paw https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10201480351318384&set=o.138862232834384&type=1&theater
ClaireC
Hi Ian any further news? x
wensmum
I hope you find out about this look-alike, Ian. I have found some people are great about letting you see their dog to re-assure yourself, some are really weird and think you are trying to steal theirs - it can be so difficult to make them understand that you are trying to rule out or in a possible sighting. Thinking of you
Tobys Mum
Oh Ian, having just come back from my holiday and checked for updates I am gutted that it does not appear to have been Penny. I agree that it is worth checking the dog out......the dog may belong to the property but how long has it lived there for instance? x
Ian
Haven't had a chance to sort this due to harvest preparations but will early this week.
BBKM
Good luck Ian, hope you get to see this dog.....if that had been me I would have let your father see my dog to reassure him it was not Penny. Can't understand why they did not do that?
Julie-Ann
As they wont let you see her and she has an official 'lost' profile can the police not help with it or is that entering the civil case area...?
B30
I was also thinking that it would be a good idea to be 100% sure especially as there have been no reported sightings of Penny since June. I hope you can find out Ian
Carol
Great Ian let us know your plot after you have plotted it xxx
Ian
Yes Carol, that was my instinct. I asked my father but he I think was embarrased to ask. Someone else expressed your sentiments to me today. I have another means of clarifying the situation in the next few days, I'll report back.
Carol
I would actually want to see the dog something s not right Ian , perhaps u could wait for the people to take the dog out for a walk and look for yourself xxx
BBKM
Gutted for you Ian. Lets hope Penny is sighted again very soon and will be back home with you. She is a survivor, I am sure she will still be out there xx
ClaireC
Gutted but the day will come when Penny will be sighted and caught I am sure. As you say it is a rollercoaster ride but we are all still so supportive for you.xx
Anne
Absolutely gutted for you. The search goes on.
B30
Oh Ian, what a disappointment. I thought today was going to be the one because often this is exactly how it goes, someone just catches them one day. I hope dear Penny is still out there and there's some more news of her soon, even if just to know she's ok.
Nickhoneys
Oh no Ian. That is such a shame. I really thought Penny would be in the blue by the end of the day. So very sorry xxx
Ian
Sorry all its bad news. My father has spoken to the lad who works at the service station and the dog belonged to a property close by and was retreived by a couple who were house sitting the property. he has been there and although he has not seen the dog he is happy that that is the case. It's a roller coaster isn't it.
Anne
This waiting must be such agony for you Ian. Hopefully the lad at the petrol station is able to help. So near and yet so far. Everything crossed that Penny will be in the blue by the end of the day.
B30
Ian I've posted on Central DL Facebook groups and directed people back to this page so that if anyone has any information it doesn't get missed on various FB pages.
rottie
waiting in hope of good news for you Ian x everything crossed!!! As she is now without collar they could be waiting to get her to vets this morning to get scanned for chip. Last edited: 2013-08-07 09:55:38 by rottie
Ian
I have contacted Wychavon, Stratford District, and Cotswold District Council dog warden contact centres with the info this morning along with the local rescue centre. My father is off to the petrol station to see if the lad has any useful info. I'm now going to try veterinary surgeries. I posted on my facebook last night but not really very good at using that so I dont know how effective that will be. Here's hoping!
Kazzie
Omg amazing news.been following penny since the beginning.everything crossed its penny.x
LisaMell
Everything crossed for a happy and well over due reunion. Praying its dear Penny !! Tenderhooks here !! Good luck Ian xxx
twoDs
Oh my word this is just amazing news.Everything crossed it is her and that the people who picked her up are traced.
Ellie
Goodness, like everyone else when I clicked onto her page wondered what was going on and couldn't read it properly in excitement. Sincerely hope it is her.. Please update us as soon as you can!
BBKM
OMG Fantastic and still edge of your seat excitement. I am so happy for you. Can't wait for your next update Ian and so praying Penny is in the Blue. Absolutely brilliant news to wake up to, fingers crossed xx
duffs54
I've been following Penny's story as well, tears in my eyes typing this, please please let this be Penny. Ian fingers crossed for you xxx
Nickhoneys
Wow!! What excitement first thing. This would be the best news. I have been following penny since I joined. Oh Ian I hope you are reunited by the end of the day and we want to see lots of pictures xxx
B30
OMG Ian !!! I clicked on Penny's page expecting to see another sighting in the distance but this is looking like fabulous news!!

Good luck today. I hope you manage to trace the people and find out if it's definitely her.
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
LOL Ian...bumped again....OOOH I shall be checking this page all day for news....
ClaireC
OMG. I have everything crossed that this is Penny and that she will soon be home with you. I am away at the moment but will be checking again tomorrow. Good luck
xx
Ian
Have just spoken to Tom the lad that helped catch Penny. He says he's sure its Penny and very happy the people who have her are the right sort to see her repatriated. However he doesn't think they are aware of her identity. Because the road is fast there they moved off quickly before he could tell them he knew her. The driver of the second car was a lad he knew from school who works in a filling station close by. I will call to see him tomorrow. It' looking promising.
Ian
Thanks Jayne but I think I might have messed that up by updating her details after you bumped her.
DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
OMG...bumped...
Ian
Apparently she was put into a Black Mitsubishi Shogun and driven in the direction of Chipping Campden. I have checked with microchip register to make sure her details are current and informed sShipston vets. Will notify local dog wardens and more vets etc tomorrow morning.
Ian
6.00pm just received Phone call from family friend whose boyfriend has just spotted Penny being cornered and picked up at the cattle grid Compton Scorpion drive below Charingworth, the site of the origional doglost trap. They appeared to know who she was but drove off with her before he could ask who they were. Im guessing she is in good hands but as I have had virtually no mobile signal for 4 days. Im going to phone Shipston vets and hope someone turns up with her.
ClaireC
Thanks Ian.
Ian
Nothing since 13th June Claire. Combines wont be rolling any time soon here, so we will just have to be a bit patient.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, has there been any further sightings or news? x
ClaireC
Hi Ian, as always with daughters my plans have now changed! Sincere apologies but I will not be in your area this weekend. As always, I really hope that Penny is seen and back home! Not a lot to ask of Penny is it?!! However, I do expect to be in that direction poss next week and will, of course, let you know. Regards x
ClaireC
I wonder if this is the Staff that was mentioned by someone last week that was aggressive that was out and about near you? Dog ID no 54058
in the Found section. If for any reason I don't answer the phone its because I'm driving and not handsfree but leave a message and I will get back to you. Last edited: 2013-07-18 21:01:14 by ClaireC
Ian
Hi Claire, I'll call you for a chat perhaps Friday. We had a Staffy cross that escaped from a local boarding kennel last week, very scatty and appeared very regularly in our farmyard. No one able to get close so we deployed scent trails from a distance to a trap one field away from our buildings.three days later it was discovered sleeping in an old disused shed in the middle of the yard. They are all very different aren't they, a huge contrast to Penny.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, not sure if you will be checking before this coming weekend (Fri/Sat/Early Sun morn) but I shall be over your direction and if there is anywhere you would like me to have a look please feel free to phone me on 07887652916. I will, of course, keep my eyes peeled for Penny regardless x
SaffySP
Oops, sorry just noticed Tobys Mum posted Merlin's story below.
SaffySP
I've just been reading Merlin's page (dog id 38844). He's just been caught after living wild for 15 months and is absolutely fine, so don't give up hope xx
Ian
Thanks ladies. Thats indeed encouraging.
ClaireC
I am in Bulgaria at the moment and met a couple from Worcs and he is near Aston Somerville and would you believe he helps out on farms and knew of Penny and he keeps a lookout for her.
Tobys Mum
Hi Ian. If you need some positive vibes, do take a look at this amazing reunited story. One day this could be your Penny :-) http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog-blog.php?dogId=38844#.Udf0Am0z-Dp
ClaireC
I have been over in your direction today and having a look around (waiting for daughter) but sadly never saw a thing. But in the rain any self-respecting dog would stay "indoors" no matter where they are choosing to live at the moment! Very soggy me and my dog!
Belle
Well said Nora - even drunken fools have heard of Penny! Great lesson to take from a mean trick. :)
Nora
What a arse, I hope you gave him a earful....but it shows that people are aware about her, so hopefully soon...........
Good luck
ClaireC
Sad people! Hope today brings in another sighting that will tell you roughly where she is "living".Last edited: 2013-06-26 09:30:35 by ClaireC
Ian
Its a funny old world isn't it. I had been hoping for another sighting of Penny yesterday even though I was in London visiting my daughter. My phone rang with an unknown number which I answered to be greeted by a caller asking for me by name and wondered if I recognized his voice, and saying his name was Penny. He said he was seeking the attention I had denied him. He sounded very drunk and obviously deranged. Not upsetting but certainly annoying. He obviously has much greater problems than I.
B30
She's a real survivor isn't she! All this time goes by and then she appears again. It's good to know she's still out there and ok but I so wish you could catch her Ian. Always hoping that the opportunity will come and you, or someone will just be in the right place at the right time.
Tobys Mum
Great news Ian.......so pleased that she is still about but sad that she doesn't realise that her life would be so much better if she turned herself in now. Come on Penny xx
Nickhoneys
Was just thinking that I must log in and see where some of the dogs I'm following are and here is one of them right at the top. So glad she has been spotted again after such a long time and still in the area. You have the patience of a saint Ian!! I have complete faith that one day , somehow you will be reunited xx
ClaireC
Little Madam! Didn't think she would be far away though. Its almost as though she's saying "catch me if you can". Still think she has to be "living" near a reliable water source or at least easy access to water.
Ellie
Bumping Penny's page due to sightings yesterday
Ian
Here we go again. Had a call from a farming neighbour mid afternoon today that he had seen Penny walking sheep through a gate in his fields above Hidcote Manor Gardens NT . When she saw his vehicle coming at them the opposite way she fled up the bank onto the top of the Hill. This is less than 2 miles as the crow flies from me. I was there pretty smartly with the quad and searched the grazing meadows, the old barn on the hill and the coppices as best I could for over an hour. Then about 3 hours after her origional sighting I had notification of a second sighting at Tankers Hill Stretton the location of the Black Cat trap site and she was travelling down the farm drive straight past the subsequent trap site which if you remember I was suprised not to catch the black cat in. The direction of travel would take her straight to the grassland farm where Alfred the nuiscence dog I was always trapping lives. I searched that area for a couple of hours too. As I have already said its most unlikely I shall catch her unless I am in open ground and on a quad. I will follow up sightings, both these today were very credible from people I know. What I shan't do until the crops are cleared is use up valuable time and resources chasing shadows. She's obviously coping fine without me.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, it seems that she is possibly not going too far away from home. Her "den" must be nearby! Any old sheds/barns nearby that are looking a bit derelict that she might have taken up residence in?
Ian
The farm at Honeybourne where she went missing from would be no more than 3 miles as the crow flies from me Claire.
ClaireC
Oh Ian what a shame it was 10 days later that Penny was mentioned. Please can you remind me the farm Penny went missing from is at Honeybourne Pebworth (as above) and is this far from where you live?
Ian
Hello ladies, Im ok thanks. I'll post the link of the hound in the irish pound to Christine. Myself i don't think its her. I was at a small business with a poster of Penny 10 days ago and the proprietor told me a lady had been in the previous week and said she had seen Penny on her road the previous week. This road is less than a mile from Christine's farm where Penny and the hounds went from. Because neither the lady or proprietor called me and we were discussing it 10 days after the event it was pointless following it up. There is no point in chasing shadows whilst the crops are standing. I'd like to think she may be alive and still in the area, but I have learned you need to step back and wait for the credible opportunities before swinging into sustained effort. There seem to be quite a few of the dogs I'm following in"limbo".
wensmum
Hi Ian, I expect living is easier for her this time of year. You are so patient, hopefully after or during harvest there will be sightings of your lovely girl, but every day seems a long time to wait. Thinking of you
ClaireC
Hi Ian, hope you are well? Talking about Penny yesterday with Ray, any sightings possible or confirmed?
Tobys Mum
Hi Ian......sorry not Penny related but just flagging up a hound that looks similar to one of those missing with Penny. Although in a pound in Ireland, you never know how far they could have got with a little bit of help and maybe worth a quick peek to rule out if necessary.......https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=589143254452094&set=a.437189306314157.102036.148748661824891&type=1&theater
Tobys Mum
My sentiments too Claire.......so sad that this beauty is still missing but never say never Ian. Will continue to follow her, watch and hope xx
Ian
Thanks!
ClaireC
Hi Ian I m sure that I speak for others that we will all continue to hope to see Penny in the blue column back home with you once again one day. We will all continue to keep an eye on the Found column and if we find ourselves in your area will still look out for her. My daughter and son in law are always on the lookout and likewise me when I am over there. I always think never say never that you will not find her again. If anybody has managed to catch her then one day she may find herself at the vets and the chip will find you. XLast edited: 2013-05-30 18:46:18 by ClaireC
Ian
No further sightings Claire, it must be 6 weeks now. The doglost trap has been returned to Elaine. Realistically I don't believe if she is still around that I can trap her. The crops are now tall so sighting will be difficult and she can gain cover very easily. Sadly many of the other dogs like Feticia and Megan who I have been following seem to have fallen dormant too. Thanks for the support Claire and all you others who have taken an interest. I'm sure if there is a credible sighting my nature won't let me ignore it, but I can't go out actively looking now I have to let her go!
ClaireC
Hi Ian, has there been any sightings at all of Penny lately?
Nikki (Tyler's mum)
Sad to see no news on penny yet, each time I log in I'm hoping for good news on this little sweetheart. Oh how I wish your little girl would allow herself to be caught and taken home to be spoilt rotten. Still keeping everything crossed for you Ian x
ClaireC
Hi Ian, again just a thought and I know you think Penny might thinks of the shed as a bit of a danger, but maybe worth putting a plate of dog food and some water and see what happens! Glad you took up the idea of flying club.
Ian
I have at times called by the derelict shed but there has never been any sign there. She was disturbed from there by an aquaintance of mine so she may regard it as threatening. The traps are lifted again at the moment awaiting a sighting. I'll post some posters to the flying club Claire. Thanks.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, I was over your way yesterday and as it was extremely hot the thought that Penny must be going near water and like Toby's Mum thought exactly the same - spooky! Whilst driving on I passed Enstone Flying Club and and purely a thought but have you dropped a poster off to them by any chance? I ask because they obviously are able to view from height and must overfly your area at times and they may just be able to keep an eye out as well. Hope you dont think this suggestion daft but when Ive been flying I've often seen dogs albeit out with people.Last edited: 2013-05-07 19:57:09 by ClaireC
Tobys Mum
Hi Ian. Still watching & still waiting.....how I wish there had been a sighting of your little lovely Penny. I was wondering, as the weather is a bit drier whether there may be any chance she could have returned to the little shed with the stream behind it, where she was spotted in February?!! I feel confident that she has not sailed off into the sunset with Mr Black Cat and I have heard that dogs can move in a triangular area when lost, she could have arrived back there near to a water supply. I don't want to throw you off the scent of any work that you are doing alongside Ray but was just a thought and could be worth another quick check xx
Ian
Sophie the Stratford dog warden called me this morning to explain the status of the sighted dog at Burton Dasset. Apparantly it was a local dog that found its way home. I met some people there yesterday in anticipation that it could have been Penny. Apologies to Jan, the lady at the farm in Northend, and the gent with the 5 spaniels I met on the Avon Dasset road.
Ian
Looks as if there has been positive news on the attempted capture of the hound up north. Still nothing more to report on Penny other than a friend is hopefully e mailing a one minute video clip of Penny. I'll post a link when I get it.
SaffySP
Ian, I have a collie x labrador female who looks very similar to Penny. I think Penny's ears and snout are a little longer, but apart from that they could be twins!
ClaireC
I suppose it can depend on how far away that person was from the sighted dog!
Ian
This is probably a long shot, but Ive spotted a report of a Labrador cross female roaming at Burton Dasset, Banbury last week. I have spoken to the contact centre at Stratford District Council who will let the Dog warden know on her next day on which is Tuesday. I suppose she does look a bit like a lab?
Ian
The travellers site at Darlingscote crossroads is about 2 miles from the edge of the Stretton on Fosse stomping ground she has frequented. However I am very confident that they would not have been able to catch her in her present state. I'm persuaded that they had a hand in that state and also cannot see what value she would have to them other than a ransom.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, back in the early days of your posts you mentioned travellers sites! Do you think Penny might have headed back that way again? Not sure of the proximity of the poss sightings last time and the sites!
B30
Ian I'm trying to get hold of Laraine.
Ian
Thanks for the continued interest, No Claire I have had no contact yet with Larraine. There has been no activity at the trap. The bait goes off very quickly now. Tonight I will prepare some new stinky scent for my trails and rebait. I'll keep it up over the weekend but by then it will be 4 weeks since she has been seen in the area. At that point I think I will lift the trap and return that one to Elaine. Without a sighting I think I am wasting my time there. Megan the Welsh Collie has also not been sighted recently so I have not deployed a trap there either. I will do if things change.

Message for Coords Lizzy/Sue please would you be able to find Laraine post 16/3/13 tel number and if either of you would'nt mind telephoning the lady to see if she is in agreement for Ian to have her phone number so he can have a chat about her kind offer of her Bloodhound to perhaps scent out Penny please? Thank you.
ClaireC
Hi Ian has anybody been in touch?
ClaireC
I will ask Admin for a Coordinator to get in touch with you. Hopefully, Laraine if she is still watching these posts will get in touch with you.
Ian
I'd be interested in having a chat with Larraine to discuss practicalities.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, it was Larraine post on 16 3 13 that she kindly mentioned the use of a Trailhound to see what scent can be found. Coulld be worth a try. It may be that Admin Doglost can get in touch with her if you haven't got her contact details.
Ian
Claire I've pretty much mirrored your suggestions regards posters, so some are still strategically placed. On the bloodhound question I'm not sure if I've missed something there. If it was a pack that's a non starter as it would require permissions from landowners and that couldn't happen as we don't know where she would go. Regards an individual dog or a pair I would be interested to hear what is possible. However unless Penny sticks to a known patch of land for more than a few hours I can't see how it could be organised. Its now three weeks since the building foremans sighting at Stretton so unless she shows in the next couple of days back in that area something has changed. Its pretty much the end of lambing round here, I don't know if that is significant. I had a distraction yesterday to see if a body on the roadside near Worcester could be the Welsh Collie Megan. It turned out to be a partially eaten deer.
ClaireC
Hi Ian not sure if you've already done in the past and conscious of your litter mention, but what about posters in strategic places ie Newsagents, village notice boards, Post office(s)maybe a few pubs within the area? Also all the vets in the locality as they sometimes only keep posters for one month (so I'm told). Maybe these new poster(s) could state on them as STILL MISSING BUT SEEN IN LOCALITY just to keep peoples awareness of her high. Did you have a think about the offer of the Bloodhounds offer?Last edited: 2013-04-26 14:13:46 by ClaireC
Ian
Abi, if Penny hadn't got Salma Hayek's feisty persona I would probably have given up on her before now. I'm beginning to wonder if something Ray has eluded to a time or two may not have come into play. He said that if she had seen other cats or dogs in the trap she may have seen the trap as a threat and be avoiding them. Albert and the black cat were both persistant offenders at the times she was most regular in the Stretton, Paxford area. Most of the posters have been removed in the area, probably as part of the Parish councils litter clean up campaign. I guess there comes a time when I need to be sensitive to how much paper I scatter about, after all I rely on the goodwill of the locals.
Abi-mama
Seems perverse to say it, but I'm loving your posts too Ian. Fingers crossed that Penny and Puss (I am imagining Puss has Antonio Banderas's voice!), now return from their honeymoon cruise in the pea green boat, and set up home back in the Cotswolds. X
ClaireC
Glad the 2 Labs have turned up - Penny next xx
Ian
Not much happening on the Penny front at the moment, except I trapped a feral cat today. The two labs next door have turned up.
Ian
I had a call from a lady at the far end of galloping lane this morning. This is the centre of Penny's patch. She let her two labs out at 7.00pm this morning andd they disappeared. One is black the other yellow. She wondered if they could be in my traps. Also just had a text from John the owner of welsh Collie Megan who has had a sighting midday at Clifford Chambers. I'm going over there to have a look round.
ClaireC
I remain very confident that Penny will turn into the blue column one day x
BBKM
Breaks my heart that Penny is still not home safe, and great news of a possible sighting of one of your foxhounds Ian but I must say I love reading your comments/updates...its like reading a book and can't wait to turn the page. Hoping to see all three of your dogs in the blue very soon x Last edited: 2013-04-21 00:20:32 by BBKM
ClaireC
I think it was the black cat that had secretly been to the grooming parlour for a colour change!
B30
Oh Ian, how disappointing that it wasn't Penny.

Ian
I was called away late afternoon to collect Penny from a Farm close to Bourton on the Hill. Unfortunately same colouring but not the same dog. Working very late I suddenly remembered I hadn't visited the trap so dashed over to Stretton to find I had caught a small white cat. He'd heard that the dog had eaten the Big Black Cat and reckoned the trap was the safest place around those parts.
Ian
Apparently a local keeper set a trap on Monday and arrangements have been made to get someone to view the dog before capture. All sounds promising
Tobys Mum
Still check in here regularly for news news of Penny. I had to chuckle at your comments Ian......perhaps Penny has eloped with Mr Black Cat (having met on the internet) especially as neither of them have been seen since!! Come on Penny, we need to see you again, just so we know that we have it wrong, you really would be better at home with your family now. Hope the news of the sighted dog brings some welcome news in the hunt for the foxhounds too Ian.
ClaireC
OMG Good luck on getting this one back as well. x
Ian
One of the foxhounds has possibly been discovered running wild near Wentworth Rotherham. Christine told me this evening this has the potential to be a credible sighting. To early to speculate how it got there, but I'd have a pretty good guess!
ClaireC
Your last comment has to be opening page to your forthcoming book! Lets hope that there is a power cut and with no Internet access she'll get in the trap and wait inside for the black cat!
B30
LOL Ian, I have a picture in my head now of Penny sat with a laptop planning pussycat's capture!
Timmy's Mummy
Well .... you know the poem - The dog and the pussy cat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat!
Ian
Well I've been diligently checking the trap on the farm track close to the old "black cat trap site". There has been no sign of the bait being touched no Penny and more suprisingly no sign of the "Black Cat" who I was supremely confident in catching. I have pondered this all day and think I have the most plausible explanation at hand and here it is. Penny has internet access and has been reading this blog all along. She knows if I catch the black cat he will "grass her up", so she ate the cat.
Unknown
No more sightings at present but Ian may try (after speaking to Ray) another trap.
Ian
No sign this morning.
Nickhoneys
Good to see you sounding more positive this week good luck xx
SaffySP
Come on Penny...get in that trap! Good luck, Ian!
B30
I agree Ian. The cat must know something!!
ClaireC
We all hope Penny beats the cat into the trap this time! Good luck x
Ian
Well I've started trapping again albeit with just one trap. Its 50 metres off the road along a farm track adjacent to where she was spotted today. I've scented from the road to the trap. It's a bit of a long shot to expect her to retrace her steps but the best I can come up with at the moment. It's achilles heel will be that it is on the stomping ground of the big black cat. Anyway if he gets in the trap again this time I shall detain him for questioning.
BBKM
Come on Penny let your Dad catch up with you so he can take you home x
B30
Sorry you came back empty handed again Ian.
Ian
Just got back from a search of the Stretton Bank area and have spoken to the foreman of a building site a stones throw literally from the doglost black cat trap site, who reported this sighting on the road at his lunchtime. He was about 70 yards from her with his dog but sensed she was becoming uneasy, at which point she hesitated and then scarpered back the way she had come in the direction of Stretton or possibly down the valley in the direction of the grassland farm. My father and I scanned and travelled the surrounding area independantly for a couple of hours. I walked along the woodland in the bottom of the valley but am certain she was not there as the birdlife was undisturbed. I met another local stock farmer for the first time who gave me carte blanche to cover his ground. I also met a lady walking dogs who thinks she passed her midday Sunday on the outskirts of Stretton. Im unsure about this sighting though and wonder if that one could be the collie we were hunting Saturday night about 2 fields away.
LisaMell
Check every day for news on Penny. Please come 'in' Penny. Ian needs you home now. Fingers crossed
B30
Nearly every time you say you're backing off a bit Ian she shows herself!! Really hoping today is the day that Penny comes home XX

Just logged on to see whats happening and heres Penny at the top! Come on girl give up and be caught you know you want to. Good luck Ian hope for good news soon xxx

Just spoke to Ian, Penny spotted 40 mins ago by some builders in the Stretton area, Ian on his way there now.
Ian
Thanks wensmum for your initiative with the Vet Clinic. Suprisingly although picking up other dogs does have an element of disapointment I do get some pleasure from getting one home. But thats the sentiment held by all those on here that makes this site work.
wensmum
You need "time out" Ian, the most exhausting and heartbreaking thing is finding other dogs who you hoped might have been yours.
I have posted her on something on facebook that is going to be on TV - Vet Klinic, Debbie Matthews is doing a piece on microchips, don't know if they will have pictures, but if they do, she will be there with the others
B30
Good that people are still calling with sightings Ian, even if it's not Penny, at least people are still noticing stray dogs. I hope someone can catch the Collie and get it to safety.
Ian
I was called to a possible sighting of Penny around 8.30 last night on her stomping ground close to Portabello crossroads on the Fosseway near Stretton. When I got there there was a couple who had been herding the dog away from the busy Fosseway and trying to capture it for a long time. It turns out it was a border collie not Penny. We kept searching with a light for about an hour but had to give up in the end. I'll phone Sophie the dog warden at Stratford on Monday.
ClaireC
Will watch with interest in the hope that you do get a definite sighting again. I do understand how frustrating this must be for you. Hopefully Ray will keep in touch as well. The trouble is Penny doesn't know which ball the court is in! Penny stop playing hard to get! xxLast edited: 2013-04-06 19:48:41 by ClaireC
Ian
ray phoned me up on Monday, and we spoke about the general situation and peculiarities of Penny's range and frequency. I think he and I are agreed she's not an easy catch. When I get a sighting I shall respond but for the time being I'm not going out "prospecting". There will come a time when I'm sure I feel more like seeking her out, but for now the balls in her court.
ClaireC
For those of us who live too far away to help physically for getting Penny back home, we will watch with great interest. Penny need another sighting of you again. x
Ian
Thanks for all the support. I haven't given up but you could say I'm taking a bit of a breather. I'm in a really busy time at work and spreading myself too thin. I will respond to sightings if I'm close. Penny is going to have to be a bit more consistant for me to start trapping again. Once the spring workload is done ill be out searching.
Ellie
Can I just add thank you to all the helpers who are offering support and advice to Ian, it's so important when spirits are low.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ian and inviting him into my home when he made the lengthy journey to collect the trap and know how much Penny means to him.
I wish I could wave a majic wand but am sure sheer determination will win through eventually.

There are lots of us rooting for you Ian, I know that is no help, just wish there was something we could do, more than say you are doing a great job, you are not obsessive, I'm so glad you have help and advice from Ray, sorry if you are having an extra bad patch

Keep at it Ian. You are doing a sterling job.

Just wondering if Penny would come nearer home if the two you recognised were staked out on your property - a bit like the goat in Jurassic Park - but nicer and more comfortable if you see what I mean..... just a thought if she's been associating with them..... I hope you sight her again soon. x
mathers22
Come on Penny I'm always looking to the blue for you. Good luck everyone xx
ClaireC
Come on Penny show yourself again please. Ian, I wonder if Penny wants to become part of a "pack" with this latest "sighting"! Did you ever take up the offer of help with the Bloodhound? Last edited: 2013-04-01 09:47:23 by ClaireC
Ian
I was called out last night by a family who had caught 2 out of 3 dogs loose on galloping lane. They had a poster and were fairly sure the third dog was Penny. Anyway I recognised the two as working sheepdogs from a friend who farms close by so returned them, but we saw no sign of the third dog.
Ian
Yesterday I collected another lost dog after being called out to a farm in Penny's patch. It turned out to be a border collie that had fallen from a farm vehicle. After pondering the situation overnight, today I lifted all the traps today. There was a possible sighting in the neighbouring parish around 6.30pm last night but I didn't get the message until 8.30pm. I'm going to wait now until I'm sure she is close before deploying the traps again.
ClaireC
Ian, I know you have been in contact with Ray, and he was only talking about Penny to me the other day, but maybe give him a call and see how best to proceed. I sense that your spirits are on the low side and this is probably borne out of frustration at the moment. I'm sure that you will have a sighting again soon. xLast edited: 2013-03-29 08:59:10 by ClaireC
Ian
Ive just returned from an early morning walk across the grassland farm and a check of the trap behind the farm buildings. The trap was tripped and the bait gone. Had Penny been around she would not have been caught. Its now more than 2 weeks since a confirmed definite sighting. I'm now in two minds about how to proceed. The traps are not working in close proximity to the farm and as Albert is not my dog and I'm priveliged to have access I can,t apply the farmers method of training which is a jolt from an electric stock fencer when he goes in it. My options are to pull the traps entirely until I get a sighting, or place them on the boundaries and hope he doesn't find them. My gut feeling at the moment is to cease actively hunting her for a while. It would be much easier to sustain the effort if she was in tighter proximity and more frequent. As it is I'm picking up the signals from many that such an intense effort is not rational.
ClaireC
Good Luck on both lambing (not the nicest of temperatures to give birth in!!!) and trying to coax Penny in. I shall be watching this page carefully as I'm off to a springlike Cornwall - yea right!! Even in the darkest of times it is still important to try and maintain a sense of humour. I know this from working with solders with horrendous traumas to their body and its how you get through it both for them and for you helping them back to some form of fitness!
Ian
Can't think I could write a book about this. The thing is some of the people involved would be offended by what I wrote. It's complex keeping people onside, and also quite personal. Doesn't ones relationship with a dog reveal deeper issues than being amused by a hairy mutt? Five ewes lambed outside last night without loss. hope the ret have the same luck. I'm off to do my bit!
ClaireC
I agree not obsessive just love and devotion for your girl. It could be that she's just a bit afraid to come home at this time because she might get told off! Who knows what goes through their minds at times. I'm sure that day will come when she will come to her senses though. Good luck with the lambing not easy I guess in this cold weather xxLast edited: 2013-03-28 09:42:50 by ClaireC
Nickhoneys
Its not obsessive!! She is nearby and waiting to be caught she just doesnt know it yet xxx Sorry about the book idea I seem to have stated something!! It would be wonderfull if you could catch her this weekend before you get too busy. Good luck.
SaffySP
Not obsessive at all,Ian. I think the way you haven't given up on her is fantastic and hopefully it's only a matter of time now (as long as Albert's labrador belly stays away from the food)
Ian
Im lucky to be self employed, otherwise this sort of effort would be unsustainable. In truth the effort I can expend for a while will be a bit limited because our flock of 550 ewes start lambing around 1st April outdoors. Whilst the brunt of the workload is taken by my son I must muck in, as with this weather it is going to be a very trying time. I am aware that some do think this search is a bit obsessive, but she's alive and not so far away. I'd sooner have her home!
ClaireC
Somebody else wrote a book, which did get published about their experience of their missing dog. Ian you could be on a best seller - after your've caught her - and got all that time on your hands!!!
Nikki (Tyler's mum)
Ian I totally admire the steps you have taken and the undying commitment you continue to have in order to bring you darling girl home. I wish all owners were as dedicated as you and although I hope and pray each day that its Penny's turn to come home, I will too certainly miss following your story and will therefore look forward to buying a book all about your and penny's adventure once you have written it! x x
Nickhoneys
Oh Ian while I hope and pray that you catch Penny soon I do so love your updates!!! You may have to write a book about your trials to catch Penny. May the long weekend bring you some joy xxxx
Ian
Well my chimpanzee is it turns out is the brown lab pup Albert who has now been in the trap about 5 times. I have placed one behind the farm house on the grassland farm and will start to relocate the others and lay scent trails tomorrow. I'm not sure of her whereabouts at the moment, but will hopefully be well prepared on her return.
Abi-mama
Cricky Ian, Penny is leading you a dance! My fingers are crossed for a successful nights trapping, good luck.
Timmy's Mummy
Will be thinking and praying tonight, as always.
ClaireC
Good luck for tonight Ian. Who knows this could be the night (I know, I bet you say that every night at the moment but you never know) x
Tobys Mum
Oh dear! We are all still behind you and your late night vigils Ian, even if it is in spirit rather than in person. I am sure it won't be too much longer; hopefully just a case of waiting for Penny to find the bait before the rest of the local animal population!! I have been thinking of poor Penny all weekend with this awful weather xx
Kazzie
come on penny get in the trap and get back home with ian.to far away to help but check every day 2 c if shes in the blue.good luck lan with the trap and hope pennys home soon.x
SaffySP
I hope it gets indigestion!
ClaireC
Squirrel! Try and try again just think how much the wildlife are benefitting!!!
Ian
Every scrap of bait gone, trap empty and door closed. Well I said I'd catch something tonight. To pull that off I'm guessing its a chimpanzee!
ClaireC
Get in the trap Penny and come home please, as I'm sure Ian would like a nice night out in a pub rather than a public place! xx
Ian
Just back from s couple of hours scanning and walking land at Galloping Lane where I had a report of a sighting on the road itself at 2.45pm. I wasn't able to identify any prints as she could have turned off any where on the lane and the road was clear of snow. Ive rebaited and scented to the trap so will visit again around midnight.
SaffySP
Brilliant news! Good luck tonight, Ian. I live miles away, but I check Penny's page several time a day in the hope that you've had some luck with her. And it will be the first thing I do tomorrow morning :-)
ClaireC
Great news that the owner is prepared to help catch little minx. Oh another night of little sleep for me I mean! Not sure how you are managing Ian! I, along with everybody else just so want to see this girl in the blue. Good luck xx
Ian
Real progress here this morning. Today I had a long conversation with the owner of the grassland farm who phoned this morning. He will actively help me trap Penny and use his dogs as the lure close to his buildings. His dogs were shut up last evening but a dog was on the equestrian menage behind his house around 7.00pm, leaving footprints in the snow. I have just returned from inspecting the traps having laid a fresh scent trail from the road to the trap on the arable land about 500 metres long last night. Directly along the trail in the snow was a set of large paw prints. These could well be Pennys large Spaniel feet.on reaching the trap I found every last scrap of the sardines meat and horse hoof gone except an intact full hoof profile piece jammed in the trip flap which was jammed up, hence it didnt trip. Probably my mistake in not making sure all the bait was behind the flap. Never mind, the trap is now validated as a good safe source of food. Im fairly confident of catching something large tonight.
ClaireC
She's always on my mind Ian! Good luck in the snow. Tell the other bloke to keep his escape artist of a dog on a short lead 'cos he's giving us all false hope!!!! On a serious note this dog may actually become a help if he knows where she is and may pair up and "herd" her to his home and become easier to catch as a thought.Last edited: 2013-03-23 15:02:52 by ClaireC
Ian
Youre a mind reader Claire. At 8.30am this morning i had a call she was in the parish of Ebrington not far from the racecourse but headed off when approached. My contact was following tracks on foot and I arrived a little later on the quad. There is a lot of snow here this morning. Anyway the upshot was that it was the same border collie we picked up the other afternoon by the racecourse, he was actually being hunted down by his owner as he was missing last night. I am hoping if visibility is good this afternoon I can drive round the block and scan the fields. Black against snow should give me half a chance.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, at least if you've got the snow it might be a bit easier to track her in an area at the moment! Good luck
SH
Come on Penny, you are missed so much anf your family want you home where you belong. Stay safe until that day, fingers crossed it will be very soon. I will be waiting to hear that you are home beautiful one x
Nickhoneys
Well at least you know the trap works!! You are getting so close and doing all you can. Im sure she cant avoid you for much longer xxx
Ian
Thanks Fiona, no Ive checked and its not Penny.
Fiona
Found dog in Norfolk id 50034 maybe too far away but worth a look.
Ian
I caught a dog in one of my traps last night. I took him home fed him, walked him and he was collected by his guardian this morning. There are several positives in this development. I have also met the landowner of a large block of land on the south side of Galloping lane who has given me free reign to access his ground.
Timmy's Mummy
Ian, I would write a letter to grassland owner, explain that Penny is your best friend and how much you miss her. Just say that you need access to the land and please please could he give you permission. Is there someone local that knows grassland owner that maybe could speak with him. Hope you managed to catch Penny soon. xx
Abi-mama
Hi Ian, just read your last post, I am working in Moreton Friday at 12 noon, so could meet you before then, or could meet about 4pm? Will try and txt you tomorrow.
Ian
Family and friends just back from an alert of a sighting by the racecourse. We captured the dog but alas it was a very friendly border collie belonging to a neighbouring friend in the parish. So an adrenalin rush again and then the dissapointment. However two independant telephone calls were received so I am very happy and grateful that postering and networking is keeping people aware. I have laid one scent trail from Galloping lane to the trap on the arable land that borders the grassland. setting scent trails from the arable ground to the trap will be impossible because it is just cultivated mud at the present. She will not cross fields as sticky as that unless she's under pressure. It appears that we will not be getting any permissions to access the grassland farm, the owner is disinterested in communicating with me.
Ian
I spent about 4 hours yesterday at either end of the day postering and watching the Galloping Lane area for signs of Penny. I met a few of the adjacent landowners who were also keeping a look out. The owner of the grassland I texted yesterday and am still hoping for him to reply. I would like to accept the offers of help from Laraine and Abi-mama but think we need another sighting from the locals and then a concerted effort that day and the next. Otherwise there is a danger she may be off on one of her circuits. If either of you would like to meet me for an hour or so early this week to see the lay of the land, you would be most welcome. Ray phoned me again yesterday to discuss the environment of the traps and scenting trails. The key to all this though is the grassland because effectively its a large block of dead ground we cant go on to fetch her back.
Laraine
Ian - have been following this since Penny and the hounds first went missing. I am only about 10 - 12 miles away from you so if you need any help please contact me. I have three dogs of my own - one is a Trailhound, so a scent-hound, but he is also very good with other dogs, so may be useful in drawing Penny out?
Ian
just got back from resetting the doglost trap close to the coppice she was last flushed from albeit not on the grassland farm. Its about 100 metres from the coppice on the boundary of an arable field i have permission to access. Its about 500 metres across a wet muddy field to get to it so hard work but I have set it so with binoculars I can see if its tripped from the road. Tomorrow I will scent some trails to it and hope for the best. For the meanwhile I am leaving the other traps in their current positions. Thanks for the offer of help Abi-mama I will call you later this evening when Ive collected my thoughts.
Abi-mama
Keep your spirits up Ian, it sounds like you are doing all the right things. I know you have had lots of advice about luring her, and I am no expert, but I have wondered about heading near there myself with a camping stove and frying some bacon, anyone think that is a good or bad idea? I am local enough to do it, but unsure of her exact sightings. Would need to do it with your blessing Ian, as I don't want to spoil any of your plans. 07554856190.
Spindle
You are doing so well, very hard because life has to go on. Think of it in dog terms, she has found shelter, can access food and water and do what she wants. She will have several "dens" that she uses at different times. Not surprised she wants to interact with a dog, its very normal after a few months of being feral she will be desperate for canine company, saw that with my own eyes on a dog I helped. Traps seem the best way to go.
Ian
Penny shows no sign of wanting to be caught and appears totally feral, with an aversion to cars and people now. Therefore its not a practical proposition to get her near my vehicle and sightings are days apart. I cant devote that time as I still have to work. I would use the whimpering technique if I had the luck to get close. Some weeks ago I missed the opportunity to try it as I walked past her within 10 feet not knowing. She has almost certainly not been back to the tumbledown shed since being disturbed about 3 weeks ago. None of the bait has been taken from there since the doglost trap was put in it. I'm planning to move that one to a location adjacent to the grassland farm tomorrow. My farrier friend turned up with half a bucket of horse hoof trimmings yesterday which smell really foul, so I laid a couple of short trails to the traps tonight. With luck and work permitting I'm hoping to have a few hours to regroup and work on siting the traps and scent trails tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
Nickhoneys
It must be so frustrating to be so close to her but so far and yet hugely comforting to know she is still nearby and seems to be ok. Cant wait till the day i log on to here to see her in that trap xx
Tobys Mum
Brilliant that she has been seen again Ian.......wonder if the lab can be useful in anyway to help lure her in, maybe Ray may be able to suggest how. Would you be able to borrow it if so? Have you also tried sitting on the ground and whimpering when you see her to see if she will come close to you? Not that sure on the location compared to the sighting but do you think that she is still using the little hidden shed that you found a few weeks ago as a base or do you think she has moved away when she was disturbed?
Spindle
Really plesed shes been seen again, little minx is giving you all the runaround. Is there anyway you could sit in your car nearby intermittendly turning engine on. She may recognise the sound. Just a thought.
Ellie
Bumping Penny's page due to sighting by owner. Hoping she moves back to areas of the traps
Ian
Well Penny has been seen again on the driveway to the grassland farm on Galloping lane Paxford 7.00pm in the evening. A neighbouring farmer friend of mine who knows Penny was on his way home with his mother and watched as she socialised with his neighbours brown lab on the driveway. He kept them in his headlights for a while until I arrived. The man supervising the farm in the owners absence called the lab back and shut it up and Penny moved away to adjacent grassland. I subsequently walked this ground on the footpath to the stream in the valley where at a distance of about 200 meters I could see her watching me in the lamplight. Frustratingly I am still unable to get permission to trap her on this land. All the neighbouring farms have granted permission but in truth the situation on these is compromised because I need to lure her off.
ClaireC
When you finally catch Penny (which I'm certain you will) that cat is really going to miss you!
Ian
No dog in the traps again today but the bait has been taken from the Black cat trap. It was a full tin of chum with the top off so I suspect its the cat again emptying the can with his paw. The owner of the grassland is away and his handyman thinks he will be gone for a while. I will spend some time overlooking the place this weekend and lay a few scent trails.
BBKM
Wish I lived closer too, so I could help get your dogs back home. Hoping for another sighting of Penny and a lead that will get Bobbin and Borneo back home safe too x
ClaireC
Oh I just wished, as so many others, that we lived closer to be able to offer physical help in getting this girl back and likewise Bobbin and Borneo are still in people's minds as well.xx
Ian
Ive been away since the beginning of the week so apart from checking the traps we have not moved further with the plan to reset and scent the traps in the new location. The owner of the grassland has been away but I shall endeavour to make contact as soon as I can now to seek permission to trap. We have spoken to all the other surrounding landowners who are happy for us to acess their land, but I have had no reports of sightings since Saturday. None the less I'm resolved to make a concerted effort around that area. Thanks psi for the offer of help, glad Tilly reappeared. On the ground help is difficult to direct to practical advantage in our situation but what is useful is networking the news that both Penny and the foxhounds are out there. Many times I have people say that they assume we have got her back. The more people are reminded by word of mouth or poster the more likely we are to get sightings. Evidently if she has done all this traveling then many people will have seen her but will not have any idea she is a long term missing pet. I am getting a little reticent of keep banging on about my missing dog because I don't want to sour people by my efforts. My feeling is that this blog is as useful a tool as any to keep my dog and all the others in the limelight, so I reckon telling people to check out the doglost site in general on a regular basis is a good way of helping to get dogs back home.
psi
thanks for taking time to think of us when you must be so concerned about penny, we have been lucky and got tilly back
today. if we can be of any help with your situation let us know , will help if we are able.am going to follow your thread to keep up to date
best of luck

Ian
Thanks for remembering the hounds Sue, I havent managed to get contact with the owner of the grassland yet to get permission. I'll post again when its sorted.
B30
Ian I will be advertising B&B in the Countryman's Weekly again soon. Good luck with the scenting.
Ian
I am grateful for the following Penny now has but am reminded of the other two lost souls Bobbin and Borneo the foxhounds who were with her. They have not been seen since day one. As so many of you are watching Penny please keep in the back of your mind that they could still be being held anywhere.
Ian
Ray phoned me today to discuss steps to take regards capturing her in her adopted territory. His advice is to draw her towards any traps set with scent trails and good feeding. He says its best to get regular feeding at the traps before they are set and not to approach her and call her by name. In other words keep her comfortable in that place and be patient rather than scaring her off. I am out of action for the next four days but my father will man the traps. once again thanks for your encouragement and advice.
Tobys Mum
I agree Ian definitely worth scenting, baiting and extra trapping said field; so wish I lived nearby and could help you out. Relieved that she wasn't frightened by the sight of people, horses or quad bikes. Indeed this is once again fabulous news :-)Last edited: 2013-03-03 17:57:19 by Tobys Mum

Another brilliant update of sightings and Penny's escapades...Its like watching a drama series the way you write Ian. I am on the edge of my seat when reading. Getting so close now, you couldn't do anymore than what you are, good luck, home soon I hope xx

Gosh Ian - you are doing so well - I hope your girl is home soon. Long way away but sending very positive thoughts.......keep going!!

Great news Ian and gives you more insight into her movements. Shame she didn't latch onto one of the hounds and come back with them when they were called.

Well done Ian. Nobody could do more, and my fingers are crossed for you and Penny.

Thanks Ellie, Ive just got back from the traps and theres no sign, but Im leaving a lot more food about from now on.

Bumping again. This continues positive news
Ian
Penny sighted today. I visited the trap site frequented by the black cat late last night and the cat was within 30 yards and stayed close. This morning the trap was tripped but no cat so I assume someone let it out but didn't reset it. I thought I might move it. Then----- this afternoon I had a call from a hunt supporter to say Penny had been flushed from a cover by the foxhounds and was still in sight all be it at a distance. This cover was less than half a mile from the said trap and not much over 1 mile from the doglost unit in the tumbledown shed. So I was wrong about her cycle, she seems to have settled in that area. She was apparantly pursued for a short distance by a solitary hound who was called back. Then she began to mooch casually in the middle of a pasture as the hunt continued on her way. I arrivede on the scene by Quad about 20 minutes after her first sighting and she was still mooching in the pasture across the valley about half a mile from us. With my posse of friends and family we tried to surround the area on high ground as I attempted to find a way over the stream in the valley with the quad. We had plenty of daylight so had I been able to get reasonably close I am sure I could have caught and stopped her with the quad. I spoke to a couple of mounted riders who saw Penny and they said she was quite at ease although not interested in approaching them, just self contained. Our luck turned as the hunt moved across said grass pasture and sight was then lost of Penny as there was a lot of cover in the valley. This area of ground has at its centre maybe 150 to 200 acres of grassland that is not actively farmed with some old buildings, and plenty of coppice and tall stands of treShe would be relatively undisturbed here. I think that it might be worth considering setting more than one trap on that farm and scenting and baiting it hard. The location is Galloping lane between Paxford and the Fosseway. Thanks to all who helped this afternoon, I think this is progress again.
ClaireC
Hi Ian, Zoe and James (aka Hammy) Hampton will be with me from tomorrow and I will give them your number and also will ask if I can provide theirs. Will also show them Penny on here. What about more clippings in the shed to draw her back in?
BBKM
Great work Ian, I am sure Penny will return to the shed area as Claire said there is water and it is somewhere warm to shelter/sleep. Keep up the excellent work, hoping its not too long a wait x
Ian
I have the same gut feeling Claire. I 'm guessing it'll be hot as I said before in 10 days time or so. If we get a sighting usual form is that I arrive to late and the sighters have not kept contact with Penny so under these circumstances The Sniffer could prove useful to give us direction. Perhaps you or your daughter could contact me or text on my number on the poster giving me a contact number. If we had a nearby sighting I could then call the "posse".
ClaireC
Hi Ian,my daughter's Springer definitely wont be chasing just sniffing her way everywhere! She's going deaf and won't come back anymore and therefore not let off the lead now especially as she can still run quite fast! My own personal gut feeling is that she will come back to the shed area - nothing whatsoever to back up my theory apart from stream nearby and somewhere warm to sleep - just pure gut feeling!
Ian
Thanks for thght at offer Claire. I spoke to Ray at length last night and he may come over in the next couple of days to assess the terrain and what I am doing. This is conjecture but on past sightings I would guess we may get some sighting in 10 to 14 days. At that point if a dog was able to pick up her trail very shortly after a sighting then there may be some merit at that point trying to follow her at a distance. I would be nervous about letting a dog chase though because it may unsettle her. I'll run it by Ray when I see him.
ClaireC
My eldest daughter and son in law live nr Broadway and they like walking with their dogs. Their aged Springer is good at sniffing and flushing out. If you need a couple of extra pairs of eyes they can have a look around in any area you suggest. They aren't available this weekend as they will be down with me but will next weekend if Penny hasn't been reigned in. Let me know.
Ian
The shed has a stream passing right along the back of it, regards food source I don't know what she eats but roadkill is a plenty at the moment. She never showed any inclination or idea of how to kill in domesticity. I am a little concerned now that within the next 4 to 5 weeks spring lambing will be in full swing so there will be plenty of afterbirth placenta available as a good source of feed that will inevitably draw here into sheep pastures. There is a grave risk of misunderstanding here as she will look like a threat to new born lambs. I have a feeling she is not close at the moment so a friend is going to put a few posters out between us and the new area Wyck Rissington.
Tobys Mum
Keeping my fingers crossed Ian that she is still close by and picks up the familiar scent from Tilly having been there today as well as that tasty bait and gets into that trap.
ClaireC
Hi Ian that does sound a very good idea re the clippings. Lets all hope it brings her in. You so deserve to get this girl back which is what we all want. I'm sure you will. Talking to some people today on another dog that has been "out in the wild" for ?6months - 1 year and it would appear that this dog hangs around an area where he/she knows there is constant food accessible and near to water. This too is in a rural area. Is there a similar area to where she has been sighted in recent times and especially near the disused shed etc?Last edited: 2013-02-26 19:08:28 by ClaireC
Ian
Just seen todays sad news on Murphy. They put such a lot of effort into getting him home safe, I hope they can soon move on! Ive moved the doglost trap inside the old shed where Penny was last seen, and left the second trap in the old location frequented by the black cat. As an experiment today I took one of our farm Border Collies, Tilly to the site of this trap to observe what she did. on passing through the field gate she picked up the scent of the trap area quickly and started picking at the horse hoof clippings I had scattered in front of it. Inside the trap was a mix of bait including tinned sardines, some back bacon, garlic sausages, a knuckle bone, none of which she showed any interest in. Many of these clippings had been there for three weeks and were filthy having been trodden into the mud. She never entered the trap, not because of fear or caution but because she just wanted those clippings. The thing is both she and Penny have access to these clippings at the farm as a farrier works from my yard. Its hard to get them away from his van when he calls by. The site of this trap is about 4 miles from our yard and half a mile from the farriers house and on the same road. Is it a coincidence or has she travelled this road because she senses he's there. Also it would tie in with the possible sighting at the livery yard at Wyck Rissington where the lady says she seemed very comfortable. I think I will make sure I use hoof clippings in my bait mix now but never outside the traps to ensure she doesnt mirror Tilly's behaviour of staying outside the trap.
ClaireC
She's having a "period". Stand still dog so that we can catch you! xx
Ian
Ive spoken to Ray today regards trapping the shed site. Tonight I checked and she was not inside. I have baited it and left a poster inside as it appears someone may be occasionally using it. Thanks for the continued support. I have a feeling she may have moved on again and we ma have to wait here for the next cycle. I had a message on Facebook from a lady at a stable yard at Wyck Rissington which is about 7 miles further on from Pennys stomping ground around here, She thinks Penny was there a while ago and I wouldnt discount the possibility as her frequency in any area seems to cycle at 3 weeks.
BBKM
Dogs never cease to amaze me, they are so clever. I get goosebumps just thinking how close you are to getting your Penny home. All your hard work is paying off Ian and you are one of the many who never give up and deserve your dog home by your side.
It will take lots of patience or this may work....if you can get lots of people to quickly and quietly close in towards this den and create a large circle around it, when you know she is in it so there is no escape. Or is that a crazy idea???
Can't wait to see her in the blue xx
Julie-Ann
Have been watching and waiting for such news. Sam from the yard has kept me informed as much as she can but had to join the site as I'd met Penny before and hope you are soon reunited. Good luck... Juliex

Like Spindle, I too am still watching Penny's page often. It is so heartwarming to know that you haven't given up on her Ian and that there is now this breakthrough after all your hard work. I hope a dusting of snow will provide evidence that she does return back to the den after having been disturbed. With advice from Ray hopefully it will only be a matter of time & patience now Ian.......just wish I didn't live so far away. Good luck.
Spindle
Been watching Pennys page often, latest news is brill. Lizzys idea a good one. Can the place be watched with binoculars from a distance? She will likely have several dens not just one, they are normally in a place the dog has 360 degree vision and sound. Good luck.
B30
WOW Ian, what a breakthough finding her den after all this time. I hope that she's using it regularly and that Ray can give you some further advice.
Ian
Ive just got back from checking the traps and checked out the shed from a distance. Its no more than 4 metres from the road edge behind a large hedge, completely surrounded by hawthorn and virtually invisible from both the roadside and the open fields in front. In fact ive passed it hundreds of times and never spotted it therefore we never checked. It has openings on two sides and is impossible to creep up on silently. If she was in there and we made any sort of move I think she could make an easy escape unless we surrounded her with bodies. As a tactician she has us beat. So a trap it is. I will seek permission from the landowner tomorrow who is a friend, and also try and make contact with Ray. It is snowing now so with luck there may be a dusting in the morning. I,m thinking if we make a wide circular sweep of the land around the shed it may give us a clue if she is in residence
BBKM
Absolutely brilliant now that her den has been found. Well done Ian for not bombing in there, I would have got my thermals, sleeping bag and flasks of hot soup and camped in there until she returned.....but patience is needed and I agree with previous comments, speak to Ray for advice. Can't wait for tomorrow for next update...everything crossed for you Ian and Penny x
Unknown
I think speaking to Ray is a good idea Ian but I am pleased you know these things can take time and a lot of patience. Maybe moving the trap closer to the tumbledown but not bailing it yet so that she gets used to it been there may be a good idea and then start with food close to it for a while before you place it in the trap.

Real progress today at 4.00pm. Penny was disturbed from an old tumbledown shed behind a thick roadside hedge near Paxford point to point racecourse. The friend who found her said there is an old mattress there and it appears she must use it on a regular basis. I am resolved not to go in like a bull in a china shop and be prepared to play the long game if neccescary rather than scare her away. I assume I am going to need to move a trap rather than use persuasion. At this point if there is an expert at this delicate stage I'm all ears.

Don't give up hope...one dog I trailed was out there for 6 months...but eventually softly, softly, catchee monkey x

Good luck Ian. Hoping the hunt is a good bet for a sighting.

Absolutely correct Ian - never give up until found. xx
Ian
As luck would have it the hunt that the lost foxhounds belong to are out this morning covering the area she is likely to be in today. We have posted the sighting on facebook network so hopefully more people aware today. My father is checking out a few sets of isolated disused buildings in that area to see if she lies up there. Just reinforces the advice Ive received on here, not to give up hope.
ClaireC
Wish you good luck. Its almost as though she's saying "catch me if you can"! Little minx however at least she's in survival mode. xx

Great that there's more sightings and that she seems to be more likely to approach people now. Good luck with the trap over the weekend Ian.
BBKM
Good luck Ian, you are doing brilliant. Fingers crossed it won't be long now for Penny to take the bait and she is safely back home with you x
Ellie
Have bumped Penny's page due to today's sighting. Hopefully, now that she has changed her attitude and coping well looking after herself she obviously feels comfortable where she is and she may not be so flighty and hang about more in the area of the traps.
Ian
Have driven round the area for over 2 hours with a lamp but no luck. plenty of bait and scent at the trap, so not much more to be done today. Flick who tried to coax her into the car said she seemed self absorbed until invited to get in and at that point growled at her and made off. It seems then that she has become less frightened and more resilient. In non feral mode she was always very placid.
Ian
Penny spotted tonight by two independant witnesses at 6.00pm at Chipping Campden bowling club heading for Paxford and if we are lucky the trap at Stretton on Fosse. I had intended to move it because this morning bait was gone, trap tripped but empty which means someone let the captive out. Maybe the cat owner. The thing is it wasnt reset so a chance could have been missed. Thanks to Diane and Flick for helping to search the area and Amanda for the initial report. Im off out to stake out the roads around the trap, wish me luck! Oh! ladies, any chance of a bump?
ClaireC
Hi Ian, anything happened?
B30
Moving the traps nearer to each other is worth a try Ian as is trying to find the owner of the cat if it gets caught again.
Ian
Have moved a second trap to mirror the doglost unit today but no cat this evening. I have borrowed a cat cage so if I capture it again I can get it scanned if chipped, and ask that it be kept under close control for a while. The Stratford Council site are listing a Golden Retreiver as roaming today on Goose Lane Quinton the same location as the sighting of a possible retriever on the 11th which I thought could be Penny. I'll try and get a response from the warden tomorrow to find out if they believe its the same dog. Its a bit irritating that they don't call back as I may be wasting my time in that area without good information.
ClaireC
Oh Ian hope this bloody cat doesn't bring his mate around and gives Penny a chance! Come on Penny game over now.
Ian
Visiting Doglost trap last night I found I had caught the large black cat again. This time he had fed well and was very pleased to see me. I was very tempted to take him home and call it a fair swap. Back to reality, as Penny may only pass this way once every 10 to 14 days I shall move one of the other traps to this location and set them close together so that there is hopefully always one not tripped.
Ian
Iv'e telephoned Stratford District Council Offices twice today to get information on yesterdays sighting of a dog that could have been Penny. The promise both times was of a return phone call that didn't materialise by close of play today. Rightly or wrongly I have updated the poster with information of that sighting in Goose Lane and postered that place.
skippy
Checking in on Penny - she's being a little minx isn't she Ian? Keep going as you are - she may just have moved about. Lost dog Jay proved very elusive at times - eleven weeks on the run - he was finally trapped just before Chistmas - I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you have Penny back where she belongs! x
Ian
I found most of the bait from both outside and inside the Doglost trap gone this morning, just two old sausages left. The culprit must have had a delicate touch. To remedy that I put a large knuckle bone which is quite heavy at the back of the trap, and will tie it to the bottom of the cage in daylight tommorow. Tonight in the snow I found canine footprints but am inclined to think they are too small for Penny. On my return a few minutes ago I checked the Stray dogs section on the Stratford upon Avon Council site to find a dog described as possibly a labrador was spotted in Goose Lane Upper Quinton about 3 miles from me today. I'll try and get some details tommorow but that sounds like a credible lead to me. If she is very muddy the white blaze on her chest is quite narrow and may not show up well.
Ian
Claire I have just read the Queenie/Holly story, and yes it is a great inspiration for not losing hope. It's a bit different here though because Penny is circulating over a very large complex area and is not often showing herself during the day. No sightings since 29th January. A footnote to my capture of the cat last Sunday,I didnt realise but the day before the trap caught a full grown foxhound as the hunt went through. It must have been quite a squeeze!
ClaireC
Keep at it.Read Queenie/Holly story on reunited page. I am so hopeful of seeing her in the blue as well.

Oh dear! Keep persevering Ian, all your efforts WILL pay off in the end. There are lots of stories of lost/sighted doggies that finally get caught. Keep it fresh in people's minds so that you continue to get sightings reported to you - keep up with posters in places where they may have come down :-)
B30
Oh No Ian! What a disappointment.
Ian
Well I thought I'd got her tonight Claire. Went out after dark to check the traps again and found the doglost unit which was resited yesterday tripped and rocking as I approached. The sardines on the approach had been eaten and the black form inside looked as if it could be her. Not so lucky though, I had caught a beautiful big healthy domestic cat. Ah! well at least I know I can set a trap.
ClaireC
Come on Penny time to come home the weathers not going to be nice again! Get in a trap please and see you in the Blue before I go away for a week.
Ian
Thanks Ellie, I'll reset the trap tommorow
Ellie
Pleased to hear Penny is still being seen regularly and keeping safe. Perhaps with the hunt in the area she decided to lie low today.
I am quite happy for you to put the DogLost trap in a more appropriate position provided it is not where it can be interfered with by members of the public and manned correctly as discussed when you collected it from me previously.
Keeping my fingers crossed for all 3 dogs.
Ian
This is old news now but I have only just received it, penny was sighted on Tuesday 29th at Chipping Campden Cricket club a place she has passed by before albeit a month ago. This was shortly before the previously reported sighting at 7.00pm Stretton on Fosse the same day. My father and I spent the day today in lovely clear weather observing the local hunt from high ground as they traversed back and forth over both the Foxcote and adjoining Compton Scorpion Estates. Both these places feature regularly in Penny sightings and are the location of a trap. We had been hopeful that the hunt would flush her out if she was present, but unfortunately we were out of luck today. Never mind it was a pleasant way to pass some time . The hounds had passed the trap and tripped it today and because of their scent and the poor drainage around it we have lifted the doglost unit and await permission to relocate it.
BBKM
Oh Ian I am so very sad too after reading your comment about the whole possible situation. I am praying all 3 of your dogs have not come to any harm and your Penny has a cozy den somewhere making her feel safe and keeping her warm when she is laying low during the day. Fingers crossed the Foxhound sighted today is found safe and is Bobbin or Borneo. Saying a prayer for you all tonight x
Ian
To answer Nickhoneys question about the police and the foxhounds--- Initially they were not reported as stolen because we believed they had strayed and there was no evidence of skulduggery at the outset. Once a period of time passed which exeeded the first week we were astonished that Penny had not walked into someone's house, jumped through a car window or been run over on the road. That was her character. Likewise the hound pups should have been easily recovered as they were not at all streetwise and would stand out like a sore thumb unless they were hidden away. We did consider reporting them as stolen at a later date but decided that the local police forces were aware and watchful and that it was not politic to change the status after the event as they were being helpful anyway. So far Andy's Shipston network has produced some useful calls so thanks for that.
Ian
I have just received a telephone call from the landlady of the Red Lion Pub in Long Compton Warwickshire CV36 5JS who had some out of town walkers report to her at 3.30pm this afternoon that they had been followed for a short way by a friendly foxhound who parted company with them shortly after. The pub is on the network of PCSO Andy at Shipston on Stour. Could this be either Bobbin or Borneo or another stray. Christine is going to check if the Hunt have hounds missing, should we list it or report it as a possible sighting of the origional pair?
LisaMell
Oh Ian,I have shed a little tear at your message. Dear Penny.I am praying that she is ok and comes in soon.xxxxx
Nickhoneys
I do so hope you catch Penny soon. This story breaks my heart. I hope she is not too badly hurt. Are the police on the hunt for the foxhounds if you believe they are stolen?
Ian
Yes the foxhounds are still missing and have not been sighted at all since the day they went. Penny showed up as a positive sighting after 4 weeks although 2 earlier sightings we dismissed as inconclusive at the time. Penny keeps turning up sometimes with an interval of 10 days without mention. We believe the foxhounds are out there still but under close control.Unless they have fallen into the hands of the dog fighting scum in which case they will already be history. Because of the area where they all went missing is close to 2 travellers sites and the area Penny appeared from was in a direct line from my home and only 1.5 miles as the crow flies from another camp in a different geographical area, I'm convinced they were all taken together, and Penny escaped which knowing her was absolutely predictable. She will not allow herself near vehicles that stop for her and will not allow physical contact, I feel she may have been beaten badly and is possibly deaf. Whenever I update this page or the poster we always mention the foxhounds because there are no leads otherwise to keep their profile out there. If my assumptions are correct and I have no proof I might add, that travellers were involved it is likely the foxhounds have been networked and so could be anywhere in the country. I cant imagine any other community could hide them or indeed want them. We cannot as far as I'm aware do much else for them in a practical sense other than keep beating their drum in the hope somebody somewhere can make the link. Penny t turns out is very hard work at the moment as she appears to be laying up in the day and moving early evening. The three traps are still in situ and I am considering moving 2 of them closer to her last sighting, The doglost trap is now surrounded by water and as I know she doesnt like getting her feet wet I may move that too at the weekend. Thanks for the encouragement, it does help.

Hi Phil, thanks for posting. thats interesting because 3 weeks ago we had a reported sighting behind Wimpstone Fields Farm. I spent the day around there and it became apparant it may be a brown Spaniel of about Pennys size who was seen with its companion a staffy. This Spaniel or Penny was seen making off with a shot pheasant after before being chased off by a Retreiver. Hence the reason for posters around Wimpstone. The following day I had a call from a girl from Newbold who had also seen a dog like her close to Alscote Park, but this was within a very short time of a sighting within half a mile as the crow flies from my home at Hidcote. Thanks Phil, she's a good dog and with help from folk like you we may eventually get her home.
Phil
This will probably not be of much help other than to confirm an area Penny has been seen recently. I live in Wimpstone and a few weeks ago I was driving home from Ilmington and there was a dog running along the road in front of me (near to the driveway to Wimpstone Fields Farm), as I got close it went into the hedgerow and I thought nothing more of it other than it was strange to see a dog apparently alone on the road with no owner in sight. I have recently seen your posters around and about when I have been out walking and this triggered my memory and the dog did match Penny's description. it appears there have been more recent sightings elsewhere but just thought I would advise you of the area she may be in or around. I really hope you find her and I will be looking out for her when I am out. Last edited: 2013-01-29 16:44:17 by Phil

Thanks to all who are still showing an interest in Penny. The sighting close to my sisters home unfortunately was not Penny but a similar looking dog missing from a nearby village which has now been reunited. This means the last credible sighting was the one 15th January at Broad Marston. The Doglost trap at Compton Scorpion has for 2 weeks had the bait taken by a small animal who has consistantly cleared it and on one occasion the trap was found tripped with no bait and no culprit in the cage. The trap is now very visible from the road and as there have been no sightings near it for a long while and it is possible that it may now be being interfered with, I am going to decommision it at that site. The second trap has also been up for several weeks next to a food processing unit which was a site selected because of its proximity to savoury food. No credible sightings at all here so this one is being moved as well. The third cage which was set close to my sisters house following a sighting we will also decommision because that sighting was of a similar dog which has now been recovered. We now await another set of credible sightings to start repositioning the traps. In truth if there is a greater need elsewhere the Doglost trap should be repatriated to Ellie at Leicester. I haven't given up but for 2 month's certainly for myself and some friends and family it has been all consuming, and I now think the effort should be a little more measured. The poster campaign was brilliant as was the local press coverage because her plight is now widely known. Please lets not forget Christine's foxhounds Borneo and Bobbin who have still not surfaced since 24th November. If they have fallen into the hands of "travellers" they could be anywhere in the country

Still thinking of your Penny every day Ian......have there been any more sightings? Was your father able to set up a trap? Willing her home now into the warm xx

Great that Penny has again been sighted. Border Collie Eva was missing for almost five months a couple of years ago, in the harshest of winter weather, snd was finally caught in a trap, so please do not give up hope. I am sure the lovely Penny will soon be home again. Good luck to you all xxx

This is very positive news. Remember the kind of weather we have right now holds scent which you may be able to use to your advantage. Come on Penny, lets have you safely home now!

OK Penny time's up get into the trap PLEASE!

That's fantastic news. I'm sure she will come back again.

Penny Sighted again....... This is Ian's sister on his behalf......he is still away. Apparently Penny was seen last night at 10pm on the road 100yds from my front gate, this is also only half a mile as the crow flies from her kennel at home. Two men called in at the farm next door and told the farmer there, but I believe when they came back onto the road, she wasn't to be seen. Ian's father is currently baiting and placing a trap at the place where she was seen, hope to God we can get her soon, before Ian get's back home....LizLast edited: 2013-01-22 16:03:01 by Ian

Sorry folks, I'm just dashing out to catch a plane to Cuba for 2 weeks. My friend Christine will monitor this page and post in my place but with my login. We have a list of people looking out and helping with phone numbers. Thanks all, it does really make a big difference having all this support.

Great idea Baggy Dog. Anyone sighting her and they have a card will be able to call immediately. Come on Penny be seen again. Good luck everyone searching for her x

I’ve found that it helps to print out an A4 sheet of paper cut into business-card size slips, each with brief details and your phone number on. Give them to all the local dog walkers, postmen etc. you meet. Then if someone has news when they’re out and about they don’t need to find a poster or log on to the site to contact you. This worked for me when I was helping to find a dog who'd been missing for two weeks. Good luck, hope she's home soon.
Lankeela
How about lighting a barbecue on your property to tempt her homewards with the smell? Hope you soon get her back. Any sign of the pups?
B30
Ian she's living a very different life at the moment and dogs just have the ability to adapt to their circumstances. She's mentally in survival mode and right now all she needs are food, water and shelter. Of course we don't know exactly what might have happened to her but it's much more likely that her panicky behaviour is a result of her situation. When dogs who have been living feral are caught they seem to snap right back into their lives like nothing has happened. It would be great if you could get some news before you go away.
Abe babe
Stay calm and confident Ian, who knows what dramas she's encountered, even the zap of an electric fence can render dogs unapproachable for some time. And do be aware of your thoughts and emotions when you sight her.... if you're anxious because you fear she may bolt again it's so very possible she'll literally read your thoughts and then do your bidding..in other words she'll run! Keep a vision of a calm and safe reunion.... hard I know under the circumstances, but so very worth considering. If you are interested Ian I could share a technique for quietening the mind and offering a 'peaceful place' which Penny might respond to. This could be useful if you find yourself in a position where she is hiding maybe only yards away again. It's very simple but can be quite amazing. Though I've never used it in this situation anything is worth trying. KxLast edited: 2013-01-11 07:43:11 by Abe babe
Ian
Is it possible that she has been hit over the head and lost her hearing? If this had happened could it account for her panic. She was such a strong fiesty dog that I am having difficulty reconciling her present fragile character with her former self.
B30
Yes I'd say a result as well !! It sounds like she has everything there that she needs Ian, hidy holes and bunny dinners. It does sound like a great site for a trap and I think scenting to encourage her to visit there is a good idea. If you could encourage her onto your property are there any outbuildings/barns etc that you could draw her towards? If it's a safe run down the hill onto your land you could drag a scent and try to get her on familiar territory and maybe set up a feeding area on your property. She's so close and hopefully she'll be happy to stay around there until she's caught. I can imagine that it's frustrating knowing that she's so near but you know she's out there and surviving.
lesleyjane
Really hoping she is caught very soon, Ian.....don't give up, sounds like you have a great support network, wish I was nearer to help. At least she is well.
Ian
I have now met and walked the footpath with the lady who saw penny 2 days ago on the Foxcote Estate. She was spotted mooching around in an ancient quarry crawling with rabbits and an old disused cotswold stone barn in its centre. It is sheltered grassy, with gorse and a perfect location for a trap. I will scent the quarry tonight in a bid to keep her interest. The Head keeper has been very good in allowing me to set up a trap but we must wait until next week when they have their last partridge drive of the season. Until then I will try and get a helper to scent every 2 or 3 days to keep her interest although they wont welcome a heavy presence until the last shoot. I'd call this "a result". In daylight and with clear sky I can see this barn from my kitchen window just below the skyline just over half a mile distant. It would be only 6 or 700 metres from the NT Gardens at Hidcote Batrim. If she dropped down the hill a quarter of a mile she would be on our property. So near yet so far. Do I need advice about baiting at home?

I will be away for two weeks from late this Friday so will be relying on this network of friends to help track Penny down in my absence. A farmer friend with a commercial boarding kennels will keep her until my return if found. Christine whose Foxhounds are still missing will be one of the primary contacts and will update this page as required using my login. I can't emphasize enough how valuable the Doglost posters have been, I've put out hundreds and Pennys presence is really known about in these parts now. Anybody got a helicopter and tranquilizer gun!!

Keep on checking this page, You're so close, I hope she's back with you real soon! When our dog went missing in the summer she ran straight past my Dad which really shocked us and upset my Dad, you just think that once they see you they'll come running back! I guess they're just running off adrenaline and go into survival mode. In the end we cornered her to catch her. I'm sorry i'm too far away to help but keeping everything crossed you're reunited soon. Best wishes and keep the faith! Nikki x

Fantastic news Ian!! Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before she finds that trap now then. It sounds like you have a good network of people on the lookout too. Keep up the great work xx
Ian
Thanks Ellie, I'm a bit bothered about how appropriate my scent is to the traps when I saw the way she bolted without a backward glance. The thing is I suppose if I had spotted where she was hiding as I passed I could have backed off and softly tried to coax her out.
Ellie
Bumped again due to today's sighting. This is really positive news, quite happy to leave DogLost trap in situ for the time being. I expect Sue will contact you with more advice
Ian
Lots of news today on Penny. Firstly though following extensive phone calls to members of yesterdays shooting party I think it is highly likely that they saw a dark brown spaniel making off with a shot pheasant that belonged to the neighbouring chicken farm. This could be good if its true because with todays sigtings news it means she is not travelling so widely and is still within useful range of the two traps deployed. Last night at 10.00pm I had a call from an on duty policeman from Shipston who said a member of the public had recognised Penny from a poster and seen her on the gyratory system in the town. Shipston is somewhat away from the main area of sightings and across a major road, so I thought this unlikely. However as he had a network of 5 or 6 hundred people on a neighbourhood network he could inform I was a bit naughty and let him do it. At around 3.00pm this afternoon a WPC from the same force phoned me to say she had been talking to the policeman from the previous night and realised she had first hand seen Penny herself the previous day on the Foxcote estate between Pig Lane and Nash's Lane whilst walking her dogs. She is a local girl who regularly walks that area and has agreed to meet me tomorrow to show me Pennys path, which I can scent if appropriate. I was calling on neighbours to inform them of the sighting when I met another gentleman who regularly dog walks the estate who had also disturbed her on Pig Lane last week. At this point I receive a phone call from a friend who lives on the estate but was hedge cutting on the Campden Road. Penny was in a long narrow paddock he was working adjacent to the road. He could not see her after a while but was sure she had not left the paddock. I arrived, he watched the road and I walked through the paddock which had a long line of manure piles tipped along its length. Quietly calling as I passed through I saw nothing. On walking back down the road in the direction I had come from suddenly she broke cover, dashed across the road and disappeared over the fields at a fast pace. She never looked back, and as it was almost dark by then that was the last we saw of her. Interestingly she was on a direct line and only about a quarter of a mile from the doglost trap site. She may have been on her way to or from it although there has been no sign of the bait inside the traps being taken. On todays evidence unless I was able to sight her early in the day and gain her confidence I cant see how I could get near her. I must have passed by her not much more than 10 feet away she had hidden herself so well. Im quite stunned really.
skippy
Lizzie - you took the words right out of my mouth......good luck Ian! :))

Keep going Ian, we are all behind you:)))

Ian please hang on to the equipment for the time being as trapping could still be the most successful way of catching her. It can be harder to see the pattern of movements when a dog is covering a big area because sightings can be sparse and she will probably be visiting spots where no one is seeing her so it makes it more difficult to see the pattern but I'm sure that there is one. If she has found what she considers a safe area hopefully she'll return to it especially now it's scented.
Ian
Thanks Toby's Mum. It's really hard going this and probably bordering on obsessive but she keeps showing herself which pushes me on. Its taken all day to get to an eyewitness to confirm the actual direction she moved off in. Whilst I have been in the locality of the sighting until a few minutes ago I have been conscious that as the Farmers Shoot were feeding me information I couldnt just blunder around upsetting their drives. I updated the poster and distributed it to the locals around there and made many more landowners aware of her possible presence. I found the cover she ran to and scented that and hope to revisit the place she was flushed from tomorrow. She's ranging over such big distances I am beginning to question wether she can be trapped. It all appears so random. Perhaps I shoulsd talk to Sue or Ellie about repatriating the Doglost unit. Again thanks for the interest, it definitely does help.
Tobys Mum
Hi Ian, I am willing Penny to show herself again or even find her way into a trap. I was following the story of Jay (now reunited) the crossbreed in the SW area who was on the run for a couple of months. They scented the area around the trap with contents from the hoover. May be worth considering once you have located a more constant area that she is frequenting again. Keep up your good work, it will all pay off in the end xx

No, they are still missing.

were the foxhound puppies found ? x
Ian
Thanks ladies I see youv'e bumped her already. I think she's just flirting with us.
Ian
Penny spotted by shooting party who knew her 11.00am today, unfortunately chased away by one of the gun dogs in a paniShe was laid up in an area bounded by Lower Quinton, Admington, Crimscote and Wimpstone. The nearest point on this square to home would be 2.5 miles from home, so she has moved on a bit. I was about 30 minutes behind the sighting and searched for a couple of hours. Hoping to get in touch with the shooting party later so I can scent where she was flushed from.
B30
Yes, approaching is very important because they're mentally in feral mode.
Ian
Thanks for sending the scenting e mail Sue there's a lot of stuff I didn't know about approaching the dog which I will pass on to my helpers.
B30
Not sure if you've been sent any scenting advice Ian but have email you some over in case.
Ellie
Good luck Ian and Christine, fingers crossed for the news we all want,
Ian
Ive just been out calling as we are just within the parish boundary of Mickleton. Unfortunately the chap who sighted her has not got in touch so I'm not sure which side of the village she is. As the crow flies its possible for her to be less than three quarters of a mile from home. If she moved in the direct opposite direction she would only go less than 2 miles to be at the farm she and the foxhounds went missing from. I have contacted Christine at that place so she is looking out too. She is now some way from both traps so we still have to review their position if we get a further credible sighting. I will go out again later for a couple of hours on the off chance she may be wandering the roads. Fingers crossed!!
Unknown
Gosh so near to home as well:)))
B30
She may have a few different points that she's visiting Ian and that could explain why sightings in one place are several days apart. Great about the new sighting. Is this in the area of one of the traps?
Ian
Yet to be confirmed but yet again I might have to take back my recent post. Just after I pressed submit had a call from my sister who was in a local shop 1.5 miles from here in the parish of Mickleton. A local man who the assistant didn't know had just called in to say he had seen Penny in fields by the village. He wanted the contact number on the poster to call me. Unfortunately as yet I have not as yet received that call but have been out with a lamp calling and put food out on our farm tonight.
Ian
Have been out trawling the back roads in circles around last weeks sightings all day. Have renewed poster sites with updated sightings and extra phone numbers. Small mammals taking the bait but no sign of Penny at either site. Its a full week now since a sighting despite blitzing the locality with posters and a presence. Maybe she has moved on. If we don't have a credible sighting by midweek, perhaps we should release the Doglost trap for use elsewhere.
mathers22
Come on Penny we are all routing for you and praying that you take the bait and go in the trap. Good luck xx

All crossed that Penny takes the bait soon Ian. x
Ian
Second trap is deployed in a discreet garden near a food processing unit. She appears to be fending for herself over a wide territory. We are making extensive efforts networking on the ground so more people are looking out for her. Thanks to everyone who helps and shows an interest.
B30
It's all gone very quiet Ian. I hope there's some news soon.
Ian
Have identified a good location to site a second trap if Penny is still close. Its in direct line between two sightings, at a small company manufacturing savoury gourmet meals. No waste but big smell. Hoping to get permission tommorow.
Ian
Nothing in the trap this morning, early days I suppose. I'm off to get some smelly sausages and sardines as advised, I'm not sure my bait is smelly enough.
B30
I keep checking in Ian to see if she's caught yet. Come on Penny, get yourself in that trap sweetie
Ian
Well the doglost trap is deployed in a discreet rural location on a run she has been spotted on twice in eight days. Friends have delivered two more traps today which need a little work and thought regards where we place them. I am moved by the amount of support given by friends neighbours complete strangers and most of all you volunteers on the doglost site. This site is the glue that keeps me trying. We had news of a credible sighting on the outskirts of our nearest Town Chipping Campden yesterday which in a radius is no further away from her home and therefore pulls more new people into the network of watchers. Christine who kept the two Foxhounds Bobbin and Borneo who still have not had a positive sighting yet,e mailed the local journals again to update news on all three dogs. Thanks.
Ellie
Trap has been collected by Ian and I have emailed him the trapping advice sheet.

Ian
I take back the last post, Penny was seen this morning on the Compton Scorpion Estate driveway the place of her first sighting last weekend. A girl known to me but not Penny tried to coax her into her car but she took fright and ran off
B30
Glad to hear that she's still around. A trap sounds like a good idea.
Ellie
Have bumped Penny's page due to new sighting today in the same area as seen last week. Have discussed with Ian the use of a trap as she is so nervous now.
Ian
We are running out of ideas now with Penny. I have been on the ground in and around the parish she was last sighted in, since Saturday 22nd but no sign since. I've tried lamping at night to no avail. Unfortunately I now believe I'm searching for a body.
Ian
I have just updated the poster info to reflect the fact we believe her to be in a different geographical area to where she went missing. Interestingly the first sighting and the last sighting over the two days were in a direct line with the destination (her home) and a local travellers site. The first sighting was just one mile from its entrance. On that basis my stepbrother paid a visit in search of info on the foxhounds. It was Christmas Day but nobody to question. No evidence of them being on site either.
Ian
Another credible sighting at 11.30am today less than half a mile from yesterdays. Unfortunately we didnt get to hear about it until mid afternoon. Lots of local help, we are optimistic although it appears she is a bit spooked!
Unknown
Spoke to Ian, no news as yet today but still keeping fingers crossed.
Unknown
Brilliant news Ian....fingers crossed she makes her way home.
Ian
We have her pen open and with food. She appeared from the direction of a travellers camp a long way from where she disappeared. If we get her home safe we will pay them a visit in the hope of turning up the foxhounds. Thanks for bumping her again lets hop0e this is the final push!
B30
That's great news Ian. Such a shame that something scared her off but let's hope she stays in the area and shows herself again. Sounds like she's hungry. Setting up a feeding station at the farm might lure her back. If you can do this food needs to be put out at the same time every day to try to establish a regular routine and then you can second guess approximately when she'll turn up.
Ian
Good news. Penny was spotted 2 hrs ago 3 miles from her home. She came into the farmyard of a friend who knew her very thin nervous and without her collar. Unfortunately she was scared away by a large compressor starting up just as they were about to capture her. Despite extensive searching of the village of Ebrington she was not found, but the search will resume in earnest tommorow. Ian.
Unknown
I have spoken to Penny's owner today and have advised him to poster further a field and he is also contacting rescues out of the area just in case any of the dogs are handed in.
Unknown
I will try and follow it up later on.
Ian
Hi Sue and Lizzy, We have followed up poss sightings generated by our postering but with no luck so far. Had a brief announcement on local radio and refreshed facebook appeal. Whilst trawling the found postings came across ID45589 24/11/12 female crossbreed Wolverhampton. Spoke to the lady on the entry who said 3 opportunities to scan were missed including a vet. She says this dog was reunited but can't see its ID on the reunited listing. Is it worth following up? regards Ian.
Ian
Thanks for sorting the picture Sue and updating the foxhound pups page too. I'll get on printing some more posters.
B30
Refresh page to see a more up to date photo of Penny
B30
Thanks for the update Ian. I've bumped the pages so that people in the area are aware. I've also put Penny's old photo on until we get the new one sorted.
Ian
Hi Lizzy, just an update. We have a small article in 2 local newspapers which has generated possible but unconclusive sightings. We are actively postering rural businesses and some dog walkers. My local post man has agreed to deliver some enveloped posters to some of the more remote farms and households. We have refreshed the call on facebook. One of the possible sightings of Penny had her wearing a brown collar. Have realised we should not disregard this discrepancy in colour, in case she has been rebranded as such. I am hopeful that if she is being held by someone that she is quite likely to escape and end up reappearing. She is only contained by a completely covered run c/w roof. Does this site allow for refreshing the lost posting to show higher in the rankings to cover this eventuality? Initially we were dubious of a sighting of a single foxhound because it was reported wearing a collar. possible I suppose if someone had had it it captivity for a time. Thanks for everyone's efforts Ian and Christine. P.S. have come across a more recent representative photo of Penny which I will post asap.
