WOO HOO Have great pleasure in moving Ben into the BLUE he is finally HOME......... Following is an email rcvd from Eilwen: I did try to get the following onto Ben's entry yesterday with singular lack of success. 26/2 Some really good news for a change. Ben was retrieved today by the Police & Dog Warden in an early morning visit to sheltered housing in the North of Blackpool following a tip off.  David  was in a very poor state so the result of The reunion could not have been better & was effected almost immediately.. By the time we were able to pop in they had spent a quiet day together. Ben very subdued & puzzled. After all he had been called Harris for a month as that was the name on his tag!     The previous day we did not get home for more than 10hrs. after locating the thief's address then waiting for her to turn up as she was out all day with Ben. We eventually had to go home & wait for her to get the early morning call today from the Dog warden & Police.   Hope we never have to go through anything like this again.  I still wish to make a donation but not keen on what I can make of the paypal rules.    Best Regards   Eilwen has worked so hard and it has paid off, they have had a lot of support in finding him.  A big 'THANK YOU' to everyone who has helped especially to a Neighbourhood Watch lady who has been a godsend, also the DW and the helper who alerted everyone to the original sightings of him with the lady.  have just had a long chat with one happy Elwyn, Ben's owner is over the moon.  The Police did take action when it was found out where he was.     Eilwen thanks so much for letting us know the brilliant news and we look forward to seeing a REUNITED photo.  Give Ben an extra big hug from everyone on DL.  Will be great now to let everyone know he is home.    Thank you also for kindly making a Donation to DL. Hi Karen, Giving out posters to local dog walkers would be a great way of spreading the word to other people in the area. Only wish I was closer to help. Hope that there is some news of Ben soon. Surely it can't be long before someone spots him. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Karen, welcome onboard Doglost and thanks for helping out spreading the word on Ben, great you are in the area.  I will email the updated various size posters to you.  The Gazette has been asked to put something in but have declined, it would be great if they would as it is a brilliant way to get the circumstances spread around. The Police have still not been helpful, family are still trying to pursue this and get a Crime No. If there is anyone else in the area who can help poster please let us know.  Thanks Yasa for the email alert to Karen's post.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi I live in Blackpool and have been on the look out and put posters up in my area.  I walked from Bispham to Cleveleys at the weekend along the sea front but no joy.  I keep thinking of how I can help and thought about handing out posters to dog walkers, I'm sure that the majority of dog lovers would keep their eyes out.  I'm sure on a day that the gazette have little news they would do a story.  There was an appeal for a cat a while back and the owners kept the appeal current and personal over about 4 weeks, I kept looking for an update and I'm not a cat lover.  If I can help in any way please let me know. Fingers crossed Ben is back at home where he belongs. Karen  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have now also added Ben's details to the Blackpool Network's page on facebook, which has 3,755 members. Have also added him to the Blackpool Football Club Supporters page which has 175 members. A friend has also offered to forward Ben's details onto friends of hers who live in that area. Fingers crossed this will bring alot of publicity for Ben and hopefully help to get him home. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

22.40 p.m.  Just received an email from Mrs Dixon: Hi Jan,   I am so sorry for what follows after everyone's efforts.   The Balckpool Gazette was the paper I tried but they did not want to know. I did manage to contact Radio Lancs after a suggestion on the lostdogs site & they were to run an appeal/feature for 3 days probably starting Mon. though I have not been able to hear it.However there has been a development today though a bad outcome. Ben was taken into an estate agents in Cleveleys this afternoon after having been tied up near their shop for an hour in the cold & constant rain. They phoned my son whose no. is on Ben's tag & left a message on his mobile phone. He took so long to get back to them that in the meantime the thief  had gone into the agents ranting at them for taking Ben in saying he was her dog. She had then taken him away. I immediately contacted the dog warden but they were unable to find the woman but they did contact the buses to relay a message to all drivers but no success. As she was said to have a lot of shopping my guess is she took a taxi so I asked my son to contact local taxi firms then call me back with the result. He did nothing I am afraid  & my fury is still not abating. However for Ben's sake I will be keeping up the pressure & will be making more enquiries in Cleveleys tomorrow as soon as I can. The estate agent did mention the woman did live in the north shore area of Blackpool which is where we have been concentrating our leaflet drops but as yet do not know on what this is based.. Today the woman was wearing a red bulky jacket & dark trousers & hair is confirmed as blond & curly.   After everyone's efforts I can only apologise for todays outcome. I intend to leave my son out of it as far as I can for the future.   Thanks for the update, what a frustrating time you are having, to have been so close to getting him back.  This is just unbelievable.  It is only a matter of time that you will have Ben home.  Keep your spirits up you are doing a brilliant job trying to find him.    Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

19.15 p.m.  Thanks Suzanne and Clare.  I've spoken to Mrs Dixon (owner's mum) lunchtime today.  They have tried local papers and have not been successful in getting them to put anything in, which is such a shame.  I've sent a text tonight to check if one of them was the Blackpool Gazette.  Local radio have said they will put it on air three times, but could not give an exact time when.  The loss of Ben has deeply affected his owner.  The local DW has been very helpful and supportive which is greatly appreciated.  Jan x Help with postering the area is desperately needed, if anyone can assist please let us know and various size posters can be emailed.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Suzanne!  I know exactly where you mean.  The Imperial is just near my house so the area you saw Ben in is on the route I walk my dog and my brother in law is working on the civil engineering at the pier.  I will let him know to keep his eyes open and I will also keep a look out for Ben.  Most dog walkers take a similar route on a daily basis, so the chances are that somebody will see them at some point.  Does anybody know whether the Blackpool Gazette have been approached to run a story on this?  They are usually good with such stories and have printed them in the past about missing cats and dogs.  It might be worth a try.  Usually, the news desk can be contacted by phone or email as far as I know! Thanks for the info! Clare  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi
I am not too familiar with the area we stayed in so will do my best.
We stayed at a hotel called the Imperial (barcelo) about 200 yards from the Hilton on the North Promenade. We walked each morning to a pier which I believe to have been the North pier (David thought this was the pier we were at). There was a lot of civil engineering being carried out on the beach and under the pier as you can see from the pictures below. We walked to a cash machine that was at a Nat West bank I think which around the corner of a pub which I cannot remember the name of but will speak to my friend tomorrow to see if she can. I attach some pictures taken so the lady may recognise the area from this.
We were walking back from the pier by all the works along where there was big metal fencing panels so the general public did not go down to the beach and around the end of these is where we saw her.
If we can give you more specific info I will do this tomorrow.

Hello   Dog ID 21883   I live in Blackpool, just near north promenade and I wondered if you could find out where exactly the first person who posted on doglost (who was visiting the area and saw the dog) saw the dog (ie, which building/hotel was it near).  I have just received a leaflet about Ben through my letterbox and I have a dog myself.  Most dog owners that I know seem to walk their dogs on the same/similar route every day so I was thinking I might be able to keep an eye out for her, if I knew which part of north promenade she saw Ben on (north promenade covers quite a long distance).  I'll carry the leaflet with me on the off chance I see him.  He's got to be somewhere - and Blackpool isn't that big.  On the plus side, at least she seems to be walking him, which gives Ben a better chance of being spotted!   ThanksLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This must be horrendous for Ben's owner. The lady in question really does need some help and advice. I've passed the details to the local Blind Welfare Societies in case they hear anything. Although the lady said she is partially sighted, she may not be registered as many people with deteriorating eyesight refer to themselves as partially sighted. Let's hope that Ben is reunited with his owner soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I really hope Ben is found/returned soon, his family must be missing him so much, He really does sound like a very big part of the family. Why do people think they can keep a dog ?it makes me so mad!  owners have done all the right things by chipping and tagging Ben and it should be plain to see he's not a stray! I only hope this lady does the right thing and returns him soon as possible. Have Bens owners thought of putting an advert in local paper or ask local radio stations to make an appeal for this lady to come forward? Or are there any cctv's in that area that could be looked at from when he was seen? Hope Ben is home with you soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I would advise the owner to contact the local branch of The National Institute for the Blind where the finder may well be registered as being partially sighted.Perhaps they would be willing to put out an appeal for this lady to come forward on the basis of the hurt that that the owner is suffering.
Also find out if the local council know of any clubs in the area that hold social events for the blind and partially sighted.

DogLostJayne - Founder Doglost.
E mail to admin: Lost on Monday evening 1st February from his home in Stanley Park, Blackpool, Black, going grey, Labrador (male) aged about 10 years old, is a good weight, has callouses on his elbows and reddish coloured collar with bone shape tag showing owners surname 'Harris' and mobile telephone number.
This may sound strange but this dog has been found but is being kept by the lady that found him in the town area on Monday evening. I only know this as I stopped to say hello to him and the lady at 7.45am on Tuesday morning on North Promenade Blackpool while away working for a few days and she told me she had found him the night before. He is a very sociable and friendly dog and was really happy and playful when I clapped my hands and spoke in a silly voice.
This is any dog owners nightmare and I was beside myself with anger when she said she might ring the owner but she might keep him. My mobile phone was dead because I had taken some video and therefore I couldn't ring the owner until I got back to my hotel. You will be asking why I never took him away with me there and then, well it wasn't as easy as that at the time but I wish I had done now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!!
The lady was in her mid 60's, wearing bright apple green velour trousers and a pale, possibly blue anorak, she was about 5' 4" inches tall and size 14-16. Whilst I was trying to convince her why she needed to call the owner she said I knew a lot about dogs and asked me if I could train him for the blind as she was partially sighted. By the sound of things she most likely lives on her own and was looking for some company, she mentioned that she had taken him to see her son to see what he thought about her keeping him. I would say that she lives in the North Promenade area but thats only a guess. She didn't look the type of person to have come a long way.
Despite me alerting the owner within 15 minutes of seeing the dog he has not been found, I went back each morning to the same area and Mr Harris has been searching ever since. He has alerted the RSPCA and the local dog warden just in case she does hand him in and is about to get help from local papers, radio and dog lost websites.
I am now back at home in Norfolk and feel so helpless having spoken to Mrs Dixon today. If you live in this area and this is ringing any bells or you have seen someone while out walking your dogs who has recently got an old black labrador please call Mrs Dixon (Mr Harris mum) on 07840855497 who is now helping to step up the activities to find him.
if you can offer any help or ideas to find him please give Mrs Dixon a call she will be very pleased to hear from you.
Thank youLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
