After a bit of a run around trying to speak to someone in MDH (lots of automated answer messages using 0870 No's).  I've now eventually found out the owner of this lovely boy did not claim him (really surprised) and he has been rehomed.  He is the one that was on their site up for rehoming but the ID No. on the site was for a completely different dog!!  Wishing him and his new family a very happy future together.  I've updated Katie his finder to the news.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

http://www.dogshome.net/manchester/harvey.html Thanks doglover for posting and the email alert to Co-ordinator Spindle requesting details to be passed onto myself (thanks Spindle).  I did see him on MDH website last night and sent the link to Katie his finder last night to see if she thinks it is him.   Billy’s owner did visit the kennels yesterday (Wednesday) and made enquiries on this boy, but unfortunately they said they have too many dogs going in.  I have tried ringing myself but it is an 0845 number and you are in a que for ages and with being in work unable to stay on the phone that long.  I was going to pass the details on of the one up for rehoming to Billy’s mum and see if it maybe him.  Would love to know what has happened to him, surprised his owner has not claimed him if he is up for rehoming.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've not had any luck trying to track down what has happened to this lovely boy.  The AW did not have his details and not been able to speak to Bury DW or get through to Manchester Dogs Home and only limited to when can ring during the day with being in work.  Finder has also not been able to find anything out, the DW did not take their telephone number only postcode. Owner of missing Billy Crossbreed M23 ID 21163 has offered to try and found out today when they visit Manchester to look for Billy.  Thank you so much Keeley this is greatly appreciated.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

20. 40 p.m.  Thanks Katie for the update and text, I did send you a text earlier to let you know the Police maybe contacting you, you may not have received it yet.  I also tried to ring you but had network problems. I have only just managed to be able to post on here.  I rang the Police who cover Bury area at 19.15 p.m. tonight, spoke to them at length and told them what had happened to you and if you had followed advice and let him go the consequences could have been a serious accident.  Asked could they not direct callers to the local Council website as numbers are on there for out of hours AW if there is one for the area (there is for Bury).  If you had put the details on DL out of hours a Co-ordinator for the area may have got in touch with you as I would have done with it being in the North West. The Police were very interested in the work DL do and hopefully they will pass our details onto callers.  Great they have followed it up and contacted you, it was a lady I spoke to whose name I have.  Thanks Katie for also discussing DL with them.  I'll try and contact you a.s.a.p.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have just recieved a call from the police, they thanked me for all that me and my partner had done and understand that we are disgusted with how the police and RSPCA dealt (or rather didnt deal with) a stray dog on the motorway.  I mentioned this website and how much it has helped me and how wonderfully ran it is (thank you Jan) The police have thanked me for bringing their attention to this website and are going to look into further it.  This was just a brief call this evening.. she is ringing me back tomorrow.  I shall keep you all posted!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, I know that the ruling has changed withg regard to police having no responsibility, but a dog running loose on or near a motorway is surely a hazard in the same way as a broken down vehicle or an accident. I guess because someone had the dog they knew it was 'safe'. A lot of the time the police especially call operators are not fully up to date with dog laws. As in the case of the poss illegal Pitbull that had been reported where call operator said police were not responsible but they are for banned breeds. This resulted in the death of a child.  Zim

Texts rcvd from finder posted two with their permission: I doubt we will find anything out!  He was found Jnct 2 of the M66, almost ran over!  The RSPCA told us to ring the Police, the Police told us to take him to a quiet area and let him go, disgusting.  If he isnt claimed, our Staffy wasn't as daft and we had a bigger house we would have him. Further txt: Feel free to post all my texts!  I hope to god his owner gets him back.  I can understand Police not taking responsibility but Police and RSPCA need to liaise with each other rather than pass the book.  I'm so pleased you are responding to my post.  You all do a fantastic job.  Thank god someone cares! This is not first time a finder has been told to let a dog go, do not know why they were not advised to ring the Out of Hours AW as they do respond quickly and would of called out and picked him up.  If he had been put on DL last night finder would of been given contact numbers to ring.  Well done again to his finder for taking the time to care for him.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Had a quick response from his finder (thank you).  He was checked by the DW for a chip and none was found.  Bury DW has taken him, finder thinks it is to Harpurhey kennels.  Well done to his finder who had a hell of a night trying to get help.  Fingers crossed his family claim him soon.  Jan x  Harpurhey is Manchester Dogs Home Tel 0161-205-2874 or 0845 241 7253.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
