1.40 p.m.  Martin thinking of you, your family and Amy today wherever she is.  Hoping the New Year brings some news. Good that you followed up and contacted the kennels.  Pity you were not able to get more photo/s to eliminate the dog.  Kennels do have lots of staffies unfortunately and colourings are very similar.  As Amy's chip is only about 6/7 months old they are more reliable than the older ones, but we do always recommend to not rely on the chip 100%.  We have had a lot of good reunited's over the past few months through being found via their chip.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The photo did look a bit like Amy at first, although a few more photos would have enabled me to get a clearer picture. I spoke to someone at the kennels who said that brindle Staffies are quite common. I know the dog that was found had no microchip in her whereas Amy has. I wondered whether microships can sometimes become 'undetectable', but Jan mentioned that Amy has one of the newer types that are more 'stable', which suggests that this dog isn't Amy. It would have been the best Christmas present ever!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've asked for extra pics of the girl in the pound, they've not sent them so far.  I would recommend, if possible, to contact the pound direct about her.  There may be other identifying features which my help once you've spoken to them.  If at all possible it would be best to go down to the pound.  I know it's a long way but to see her would be best. Thanks Mel greatly appreciated, I was alerted to this found staffie within the past hour by DL Co RileysMum (thanks Adele) and was talking to Martin as you must of posted.  I've emailed the photo Adele sent and also the link you posted and the kennel contact details, if Martin is able to get more photo/s of her that would be great.  If it is Amy her family would be over the moon they have worked so hard to try and find her.  Martin says the likeness is very similar, there maybe slight difference with the white markings and colouring shade, but Martin wants to check her out.  Due to the time Amy has been missing she could well be out of the area she originally went missing from.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went up Helvellyn on Saturday but no sign of Amy. The weather wasn't good though - mist, rain and strong winds so I doubt she would have been up on the tops that day. Put a few more more posters up later on around Threlkeld and Keswick. I'll get up on the tops again next weekend. Hopefully there will have been another sighting by then.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Martin thanks for the phonecall and updating us.  You have been working so hard especially with you living so far away.  Good luck for tomorrow, I'll check if there are any other dogs missing in the area and text you.  Would love to see Amy going into the blue.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just had a phone call from a bloke who was mountain-biking on Helvellyen Lower Man this evening and saw a black dog. He said it was barking and snarling and that it wasn't with anybody. He saw a poster later in the pub and reckoned it might well have been Amy. I'm heading up that way tomorrow to do some more postering so will try and get up Helvellyn as well. I really hope it's Amy!  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Martin, good that you are replacing the posters with the STILL MISSING ones.  We know it is very frustrating for you and your family not getting any news after all this time.  There has many a missing dog been found weeks/months later through someone seeing a poster and they have not reported the found dog to the DW.  Thanks for keeping us updated.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went up yesterday and checked the steep part of the adjoining gills. Difficult to check every inch because of the terrain, but no sightings. Then replaced a few more posters with 'Still Missing' ones, as well as putting a few up in new places.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

00.20 a.m.  Martin good that people are still looking out for Amy, keep up the brilliant work.  I did look to see if I could find a link to the news article the other night but couldn't find any, well done for getting her in the paper and on the local radio.  A big thank you to both of them.  If you see any of the original posters replace them with the STILL MISSING ones that I sent to you and helpers etc.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The Cumberland and Westmorland Herald did a nice little article on Amy this week, including a full colour photo. She also got a mention on Radio Cumbria again. Had a few phone calls from people who've seen the posters, asking if we've found her. Still waiting for the call to say someone's found her though. I went up on the tops again yesterday, on Watson's Dodd and across to Brown Hills, but no sightings nor any sounds that might have been her. Martin  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went up today and walked the area from Watson's Dodd to Sheffield Pike, but again no sightngs. The food I'd left on Watson's Dodd had been eaten, but could easily have been eaten by a fox or another dog. I hope Amy starts coming down to the valleys where hopefully someone will spot her and get in touch.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Email from helper which is very useful for anyone helping look for Amy: Hi Jan,
Wish i could help more (read previous e-mail also), but I can't, but do understand what owners are going through, believe me.
So here's my additional info on exact location of Watson's Dodd (which may help, if it is shared? I only hope so, so please share it with all) - it's a peak which lies 3 miles North of Helvellyn, at the North-Eastern end of Thirlmere (GR 336197), OS Landranger 90 (Penrith, Keswick + Ambleside).
Keswick is nearest town, while Patterdale + Glenridding are villages on the other (farther) side of ridge Watson's Dodd is on. But a great deal of open country in between all, but walked by many...
If I lost a dog in this area, I'd contact all locals - starting with farmers + pubs, then B+Bs, hotels, guest houses, campsites, bunkhouses, pubs, for any info. Someone will have seen/know something! (I once nearly took a 'lost' springer home, against my partner's advice, then after half an hour, his owner eventually appeared! I've learnt not to be too hasty in taking a dog in, but it's a possibility that somebody has?)
Really feeling for owners, + really hoping i've helped in some way.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Linda, No, Amy doesn't know the area at all. This was the first time I'd taken her to the Lakes. Some of the flyers were kindly done for me and it was only after putting some up that I realised the mistake. I corrected it though for when I printed some more off. The whole area is new to her. Linda, we're on the same wavelength. I'm hoping to go up this weekend and go up Watson's Dodd and then walk across to Sheffield Pike (between Glencoyne and the Glenridding valley). I also went up the road to the Youth Hostel yesterday between 5.30 and 7 - beyond the Ski Club a choice of 3 paths, so took the middle (towards Whiteside).  No sign or sound.  Met various people, none of whom had heard or seen anything. Where best to search at the week-end - concentrate on the area between Glencoyne/Glenridding and back towards Watson's Dodd?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Martin. As I did not get home till gone 6pm, I would not have got up there till nearly 7 so I rang Val instead to fill her in - I see you bumped into her. Lets hope it was Amy who was seen, if so, sure she will be spotted again soon. Do feel free to text me tomorrow if you get a phone call with a sighting. Nipped up to Glenridding this afternoon but couldn't see any sign of her. I put a few more posters us on the road up to Helvellyn Youth Hostel. The houses and shops in the village had already been postered and knew about Amy. I went round to Glencoyne (as Linda did yesterday evening) where someone had heard howling a few days ago. I walked round the head of the valley shouting her, but heard and saw nothing. On the way back, I nipped up to Helvellyn Youth Hostel again and met Val who was about to go looking with her dogs. I hope it was Amy that was spotted yesterday as at least she's heading towards a more populated area. MartinLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just had a call from Ullswater Tourist Info. A lady spotted a dog wandering along just up from Glenridding village (the road up towards Helvellyn Youth Hostel). It seemed to have no collar on, but Amy's collar is black so would not be noticable from a distance. When she saw the poster she didn't think it was Amy she saw. But Amy does look a lot less like a Staffie when she's underweight which she will presumably be now. She said the dog seemed like it was 'on a mission'. Again, that's a Staffie trait, head down and keep walking. Maybe I'm clutching at straws, but as it's just over from where a dog was heard the other Sunday, I'm gonna head up to that area to have a look around. MartinLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The chap just text me to say he heard the howling last Sunday (13th). It was coming from the area named on the Ordnance Survey map as Brown Hills, on the northern side of Glencoyne. That is so near to Watson's Dodd! I'm not sure if I'll be able to get up there before the weekend, but If anyone near that area doesn't mind having a look that would be fantastic. If you can speak to him again and get a better idea where the howling seemed to be coming from, I could try and get into that area after work tomorrow, if not today. In case no news by the week-end, if there are others planning to go out looking, could we perhaps co-ordinate to see which areas are to be covered? Good luck, Martin - pray God Amy is found soon. Had a call this morning from a chap who said he's heard a dog howling in the hills on the north side of Glencoyne near Ullswater. That's only a couple of miles from Watson's Dodd where Amy went missing. He said he didn't think anything of it till he got down and saw a poster. He said it was on the Sunday but I'm not sure which Sunday, either the 6th (2 days after she went missing), or the 13th (9 days after she went missing). I've rung him back and text him but no answer as yet. It may not even be Amy, but it's the first possibility we've had so far.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went up today on the other side and walked onto fell from car park at High Row. Looks like there had been a poster which had been taken off. I taped up a poster which I had laminated. Met a local lady (who Martin has spoken to and has her number) and I gave her my remaining posters as I am back at work all week. Popped into Keswick before going up there and put poster up in Podgy Paws Pet Shop and Booths supermarket.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Went up yesterday (Sat 12th) and put up posters and flyers in the Pooley Bridge area and in Ambleside. Then went up Watson's Dodd again (met Sue and her trailhound coming down). I left an old shirt on the summit as was suggsted, as well as a few dog biscuits in case Amy comes back that way. Stayed for a bit on the summit then went down and along the path by the wall that runs south from Stanah to Swirl(?) car park. I called to her all the way and back as the path goes behind a few properties, just in case she was lying low in that area. Today, went up the ghyll to the south of Watson's Dodd, but again nothing. On the summit, checked the shirt/biscuits, but none of the food had been taken. Back in the valley (Thirlmere side) I called at a few farms to ask if they could check their barns in case she was hiding in one of them. They knew about Amy either from posters or notes I'd popped through doors, so were all keen to help. Thanks again to everyone who's helping to find her. It really is appreciated so much.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just a thought but have you postered the outdoor pursuits / climbing shops around the area ?    Maybe worth notifying also  mountain rescue in the area and the local hunts /gamekeepers /  fell harriers/ ramblers association in the area who could keep an eye out,.  The Westmoreland Gazette is probably the main  paper you need to put an advert in.  When I lived up there ( Burton-in Kendal) it was the most popular one people bought but do get as much coverage as possible its really important ! Margaret, thanks for your offer of emailing the caravan/camp sites in the area. My brother and I have put up posters at a large site near Troutbeck just off the A66 (Rookin House?) and one near Brotherswater (Sykes?) as well as a few others which I can't remember the names of. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to email them the poster if you have their email addresses though. If that's possible, that would be a great help. In the meantime, I'll try and contact my brother to see which sites he visited. But between us I think we covered most of the sites to the north, east and west of where Amy went missing. My brother managed to deliver posters to premises in Keswick and Grasmere, so this weekend I'll get posters up in Ambleside and Pooley Bridge. Many thanks Martin  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, There's been no sightings of Amy as yet. My brother has been up since Monday evening (7th) and has been up on Watson's Dodd where she disappeared and has checked the adjoining fells. He's also been putting up posters and delivering flyers on the Patterdale/Glenriddng side. I'm going up again on Saturday morning and will go up on the hills again, as well as putting up posters in Keswick, Ambleside and Grasmere (although I'll check with my brother first to see if he's covered these areas). I've had calls from people that I've either spoken to or who received a flyer, all asking if we've heard any news and to tell me they're gonna go looking with their dogs whenever they can. The concern and offers of help from people has been tremendous and really appreciated. Martin  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have emailed posters to Glaneils Kennels at Burton in Kendal, they are the pound for South Lakeland and to Wolfwood at Lancaster, they are the pound for Lancaster area, just in case she turns up out of area Newspapers for the area are: Westmorland Gazette and The Cumberland News, both of which seem to have editions covering the whole of Cumbria. Carlisle News and Star. Cumberland and Westmorland Herald. North West Evening Mail(Cumbria Edition) Perhaps it would also be worthwhile contacting BBC Radio Cumbria or Lakeland Radio. I know BBC Radio Lancashire have a lost pets section every afternoon. If necessary I could email caravan sites in the area (I am a member of both Caravan Club and Camping and Caravan Club so I have directories for both clubs.) Have they all been covered or just the larger ones? Margaret  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I returned on Monday to where Amy disappeared to check the hillside for fox/rabbit holes in case she was stuck, but there's nothing. Waited around on the hill for a while watching the adjoining hillsides in case she came past. That evening, I put poster up and delivered flyers around the area to the west and north of Watson's Dodd. My brother is up there for a few days and is doing posters and flyers over the east side. Doing farms, tourist infos, pubs, notice boards, houses, caravan parks ... anywhere where they can be seen. Everyone is very understanding and sympathetic. I just really hope she turns up soon. Still working through registered NW helpers emailing the poster out, just had a reply from a helper who has asked me to post it on site on their behalf: Hi Jan, I will fwd to the Lake District Search and Rescue Dog handlers and to the Natural England people working up there. Hopefully it will also get passed on to the National Trust wardens. Could be worth putting posters up at Kendal, Penrith and Carlisle auction markets too.
Best wishes
Thank you so much for helping to spread the word.  Jan x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Spoken to Martin now.  Amy is a rescue dog from Halewood RSPCA they have had her about 6 months and she is very fit for her age.  Posters have been getting put up and handed out in the area she has gone missing and surrounding area.  People have been very helpful helping in the search for her.  Various size posters now done and emailed to Martin with Scenting Instructions.  He will be going to the area tomorrow with family and friends.  Posters and info emailed to Rescues, DL helpers and Co-ordinator Goldenfrodo.  If anyone is able to help with the postering and spread the word please let us know and posters can be emailed to you. Thanks.  Fingers crossed Amy is found soon and reunited with her family.  Jan x    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Unable to speak to Martin as he was not at home have spoken to someone else.  There is no Internet access where he lives so he has gone somewhere else to access it.  Amy has gone missing a good way from home and Martin has been out searching for her.  I'll email further advice/info and do various size posters and also send Scenting Instructions.  Martin is going to the area again tomorrow to look for her.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Martin to see Amy has gone missing, thanks for registering her details onto DL and uploading photo/s. Return to the area you last seen her and leave an item of clothing in a safe place. You need to poster poster poster the area as much as possible, we cannot stress enough the importance of the postering.  Posters can be printed once a photo has been added by selecting Dog Poster 1 just above Dog Information (you must be logged in).  Once the posters start getting circulated hopefully you will get the call you are waiting for. Contact DW's, rescues, vets and leave a poster (you can find vets in the area by clicking on the logo right hand side just underneath Latest Missing photo).  Dogs can be rehomed after 7 days, try and visit rescues do not rely on phone calls alone.  Great that she has been Chipped contact the Chip Co to report her missing and check your details are up to date.  If you get any sightings let us know or if she is reunited with you.  Good luck and hope Amy back home with you soon.  Jan x Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
