Lovely reunited photo of Thumper received from Wendy which I have now uploaded to his page. Thanks for the update Wendy, pleased to hear Thumper is still the local celeb....look forward to seeing the reunited story in the paper. Wendy is also going to very kindly make a donation to Doglost to help us to continue to help other owners and dogs, as well as staying on as a helper so THANK YOU! Big hug to Thumper. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you to all of you, I couldnt have kept going without you. We are over the moon and the reunion with Thumper was amazing. He is a total celebrity in the village, people are ringing us and dropping off cards. He has been to visit every shop to thank them and take the posters down. He is skinny and very tired but very pleased to be home.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank goodness for that vet.   I have had this discussion with my vet - who doesn't routinely scan new dogs who come into the surgery, as he feels his credibility is then in doubt.   I did try to argue the cause but didn't really get anywhere.   This was a while ago - maybe I'll try again!   Anyway, well done that vet, and welcome home Thumper, I'm so pleased for him and his family that he is now home where he belongs.       Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

i'm absolutely over the moon for you wendy :) but i am also livid that you have been through so much unnecessarily!!!........... i know maybe thumper was scanned when he was first found but it seems unlikely giving the vet found the chip like that.      please give thumper an enormous hug from me xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh how wonderful!  I'm so pleased for you!  Scanning should be made compulsory by any authority with a new dog!

glad to see Thumper is back where he belongs but what a different story it may have been if he had'nt been taken to the vets surely any dog that is found should be scanned as routine otherwise what is the point of having them chipped in the first place

I am not sure if Thumper had been at the RSPCA since found or whether maybe he'd just been transferred there for rehoming. If found in Romford and reported to that council, stray dogs wouldn't normally go to the RSPCA Braintree....maybe he was reported to another council. As soon as I have more details from Wendy will let you know. Either way, you'd have hoped whichever dog warden/kennels he came into contact with him in the last 7 days would have scanned him.....but sadly this is not compulsory (although most I'm aware of in Essex do), something 'Dolly's Directive' with the support of Doglost is trying to change.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

THUMPER IS HOME!!! Text just received from Wendy....seems 'the system' didn't quite work here one way or another. He was at the RSPCA in Braintree, after having been found in Romford abandoned 7 days ago (not sure how long he'd been at RSPCA). He had been declared a stray and was in the vets about to be neutered when the vet scanned him and found his chip. Going to speak to Wendy to find out more details, but she's no doubt ringing round everyone at the mo with the good news! I am so thrilled for Wendy and family (and Thumper!) who worked so hard and THANK YOU to all the wonderful DL helpers who really have done a great job helping.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

message from labrador forums helper : http://www.labradorforums.co.uk/ftopicp-1034935.html#1034935 I cant seem to post on doglost but as a recommendation I thought some flyers at Ardleigh boot sale might be a good idea ?
I know its 10 miles from where he vanished but there are always massive of dogs there on sundays and they would be hitting a massive audience. Just an idea ?   laura

Yep, I know where that is now.... If it is Thumper he is literally a stones throw from home via the  fields,is that a walk you used to take him on?  Have you also ventured down the old sandpits lane as well, dont know how far down its goes but I believe  it comes out at Thorpe Park Lane, that tiny road on the thorpe side of the railway bridge at thorpe?  There is a level crossing but the lane is on Thorpe side of the railway line, might be worth a walk...Or at least put up some posters, as that is not too far away from the sighting, the fields all meet up in the dip.  If you want me to walk one of the routes let me know and I'll venture that way tomorrow pm with my dog in tow...Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes we have had a map out virtualy from day one. It isnt that far away from us on the map. We have contacted nearly all the farms we think and it is a well postered area all arround. It is also covered by both the papers that we have ads in.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just returned from walking the dogs (7.15pm), we went down Church Lane, Gt Holland, into Hall Farm at the bottom of the lane then followed the track to the right of the pond. We followed the track to the golf course and then turned and walked all the way back up track to home. The lane is still postered as is Manor Rd.  We saw Jack the herdsman and the farm managers wife was putting the horses in but no sign of any dogs........ My brother in law also works on the farm and he was just going out with the sprayer but didnt get chance to speak to him, so will catch up with him later. If you want me to deliver flyers through doors in the village, I can do this on Friday & Saturday for you, do you still have A5  flyers to hand as I have used all mine at the carnival? Speak to you soon, Regards CharlieDiesel&Buddy x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

The person who spotted him was out shooting with their dogs, absolutely definately knows what a lab looks like. Hadnt seen a poster so they didnt know it was Thumper until later in the day and then rang us up. We went there last night and my son walked the whole of the bridal path back to thorpe and up station road to home. So if Thumper picked up his sent he should be able to follow it home. Directions- down little clacton road (direction Clacton) over the humpback bridge, turn right, up the hill, over the railway bridge, past the sub station and then first right down Lodge Rd, all the way down the road to Lodge Farm and he was seen in the fields somewhere down there. So I am guessing he is the wrong side of the railway track to find his way home.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Wendy, Great news about a possible sighting.  I live in Great Holland and only know of one Golden Labrador, he is always walked on a lead and is slightly obese, lives in lt clacton road.  Nearly all the labs  I know of in the village are black, as mine is.  Was it a definite Lab that was seen?  Just that there is sometimes a very bouncy golden retriever in the fields off of the gardens in Little clacton road, there garden is not secure and the dog does wander into the field behind.  Will keep my eyes peeled when out walking my 3 later. You have my email if you want to let me know which part of village he was seen in. Fingers crossed it is Thumper x   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Phew, thank god the dog in the ditch wasn't Thumper, poor dog run free whoever you are. Like you say, good thinking for the person who saw it to take a photo so you can eliminate the dog. Excellent news about the possible sighting. I think it would be worth you leaving 'scent' in this area, I will resend you the scenting instructions so you have them easy to hand. If you're not already, start recording any sighting locations on a map so as more come in we can hopefully see a pattern and routine emerging. Keep the posters going up in the area, more often than not its a member of the public that spots the dog rather than the actual owner. Also, bear in mind how to act if the dog is seen. If it is Thumper and he's been living feral since missing, his natural instincts will be taking over so if you do see him you need avoid eye contact, keep voices and movements low, and do not approach him.....as difficult as that sounds, but his trust more than likely will need to be built back up....then something will 'click' and dogs in this situation then recognise the owner and go bonkers and revert back to their normal selfs. Keeping everything crossed for you. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Wendy,   I am back in Colchester, where I have just moved from, for 2 weeks from Friday. I had hoped that Thumper would be home by now, but seeing as this is not the case I am happy to put up some posters and keep an eye out for him. I have plently of friends and family who live in Colchester, Clacton and inbetween who I will inform. Fingers crossed that he is home with you soon. Anna Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh and my husband has spoken to the street cleaning company and they would always scan a dog if found dead on the road. They havent found any dogs recently, in fact the cases of dogs hit or found are quite rare.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok the dog in the ditch wasnt Thumper but Ive only seen a picture we havnt been able to find it again. At least the person thought to take a picture on their mobile. We have been out postering and looking again tonight, as we have had a very good report of a lone fit looking lab playing in fields near Gt Holland. My husband took the call and said it sounded like a very reliable description. It was 11am today, they did call and chase but he wouldnt come to them. It isnt that far away from us and he appeared to just be running arround happily on his own. So we are very positive tonight.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Wendy, you sound like you're having a real nightmare at the moment with things. Unfortunately there are a small minority of very sad and bored people out there who feel it necessary to prank call/text. Idiots! Re possible dog in the ditch, have you spoken to the street cleansing dpt in the council and highways to check if indeed a dog was collected in the area, or maybe local farmer if on his land? Whilst this is something no one would wish to have happened, its another area to be checked and crossed off the list as contacted. Keep the pressure up, keep Thumper's profile up and 'too hot to handle'. I know it must be so difficult, especially with everything else going on and the lack of sightings but your tenacity will pay off in the end. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Jotty No good news about Thumper. We started to get prank texts saying someone had found him but it was just some sick kid doing it for a laugh, we contacted the police. We have also been told that somebody thought they had seen a dead Lab in a ditch on the way to Weeley, but we searched last night and couldnt find anything. My wave of great luck continues as yesterday my rear tyre blew out on the A120. Whilst I was trying to get my son to a hospital appointment to check his hand out. Thanks to a passing friend he made the appointment and his hand checked out fine. I will return the press release. I will check with identichip about locate but I think it may be to late to join now that he is missing. Thanks for all your support.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Wendy, sorry to hear there is still no news but your hard work and support from others will I am sure bring some news soon. Keep it up, it will be relentless at times but I don't need to tell you it will be all worth it in the end! How's your son's hand?  Excellent news that so many more locals are aware, the more eyes looking the better. Re chips - unfortunately as you have already found out after having spoken to your owns vets, not all places routinely scan 'new' dogs. The situation is far better now that it was and awareness is much higher so the majority of dogwardens, rescues etc scan dogs they come into contact with BUT a lot of vets if someone turns up with a new dog (which they could well have found but not reported/decided to keep - illegal) do not scan as a matter of course. Doglost supports Dolly's Directive which wants to see compulsory scanning by all bodies coming into contact with dogs. From your post I presume Thumpers chip is an Identichip (rather than Petlog). They do not notify anyone that dog is missing unless you are a paid up member of 'Locate' their reunification service, but to be honest even if I was I would still want to contact all the dogwardens, vets etc to ensure it had definitely been covered. I hope that helps. Did you have a chance to look at the press release I emailed you? I know you have had some coverage already, but the more the better! Thumper will also be in Countryman's Weekly soon, we'll put a message on his page when he is to let you know.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you so much. I visited Haven vets in Clacton yesterday, this is our normal vets. I had already notified them and now they have a poster and leaflets as well. Having asked them some questions I am a little worried about how much help the microchip is going to be. Unless they no that a dog is missing they dont run a check on all chip numbers when a new dog is brought into the surgery. So if thumper is taken out of the area how does the chip help if they havent been notified? Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Handed out 150 A5 flyers this afternoon at the carnival, Thumper was quite a conversation piece, a good percentage of those we gave leaflets to were already aware of him missing, having seen posters and newspaper articles.  Lots of comments and hopefully lots of additional eyes now watching out for him.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Ok I have printed off 200 flyers for Charlie Diesel&Buddy to hand out at the carneval if they are still willing. email me and you can meet me or drop in to pick them up. Still no definate sign of him, one possible from the paper, spotted at 3am on tuesday on the sea front in Clacton. We are going to do a night search just in case along the front. Lots of calls from the posters one from a local farmer in the Beaumont area, they had been away and wanted to check if he was still missing. They will look all over the farm, they have two labs and were rearly sweet. The photo I picked is magic lots of people have noticed it, we have had lots of phone calls but mostly people giving us advice and showing support. Thanks for all yours, sometimes its very difficult to be positive, he is like a ghost in our house. There is so much to remind us all the time that he is missing.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There is a feature & picture of Thumper in the Clacton Gazette - really hoping this brings the call Wendy is waiting for.  Is it going in the East Anglian Daily Times? This seems like a Suffolk paper but is sold in local newsagents etc.  Then there are various local 'parish' magazines etc. Just wondered if Wendy has had time to contact vets in a wider area - someone might just take him to a vet because of his skin condition ? If anyone is going to Weeley Car Boot tomorrow that would be a good place to hand out flyers (I can't go but will happily print some leaflets). Don't know if there is still a Car Boot in Clacton on a Sunday?  Another thought is newspaper shops might not charge too much to include a leaflet with the papers.   We have ours delivered by Bentley Home Delivery - think they go in to Thorpe, Beaumont etc. & they often include local leaflets. Or the local leaflet delivery people (Prospector) will deliver in specified different areas. Fingers crossed this gorgeous boy is back where he belongs very soon. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Update from Wendy - Sadly still no news or sightings of Thumper. They have got ads in several of the local papers today. Wendy and family miss Thumper so much, and now they have had another bit of bad luck in that Wendy's son broke his hand on Sunday - whilst out looking for Thumper - so she has been at the hospital a lot with him. She is so grateful for all of your help. Thumper needs to be made 'too hot to handle', and the most well known boy around! I will speak to Keelah our Press Officer and see if she can get a full article and photo in any of the local papers. Thanks everyone for your continued efforts to help find Thumper. Jo x   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have managed to reduce the Doglost poster down to A5 size, ready to print off on Friday if needed for Saturdays Lt Clacton Carnival. Myself, my daughter and her friend both TTC pupils are walking alongside the primary school float so can hand these out enroute. (We'll be the ones in silly costumes, lol)  The procession gathers at Plough Corner, Little Clacton at 1.30, ready to start at 2pm.  It finishes at Engaines Primary School in the village at 3pm. I was in Kinfauns Vets this morning with my Lab Charlie, they didnt have a poster on display, if Wendy has not already sent one out to them I can drop one off in the morning when doing the school run. Reedlands Farm Shop in Holland Rd, may well display one, they have a large passing trade, also will drop one off at Park Fruit Farm, in Pork Lane, Gt Holland, again rural areas but if Thumper is roaming fields then hopefully these will attract attention, if anyone has seen him. Come on Thumper show yourself! Has Walton been postered?  Just that a few years ago my sisters Lab escaped from Kirby Cross, she was picked up later that day by the dog warden down on Walton Pier, god knows how she managed to find her way there as she was only ever walked locally, surprising what distance they can cover in a short time.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks everyone! Littlelab, when you are logged in, go to Thumpers page and at the top, just above where all his details start (name, breed etc), there will be a 'Dog Poster 1' link - click on that and his poster will open and you can print that from your browser window as normal. You must be logged in to view the link/posters. Thanks for all the suggestions, keep them coming as local help and knowledge is so important, from speaking to Wendy before I know she has contacted many people and Clacton Animal Aid, Westend Kennels (take strays for Tendring) and Tendring DW are included in that list. I know she was ringing round vets, not sure if they have been given/posted a poster, I am sure Wendy will confirm next time she is online. Great idea about handing flyers out at the carnival - I will check with Wendy if she has flyer she is using already, if not I can do the Doglost ones for her and then we can email them out to all who can help. Fingers crossed the announcement in assembly at Wendy's school will lead to something as that alone will cover a large local area. Come on Thumper, where are you, we all want you home boy. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry to see Thumper is still missing.  Is there a Doglost poster available as I cannot seem to find it. Will gladly poster my village of Great Holland and any local outlets for you.  I know its a few days away but next Saturday is the Lt Clacton Carnival, I hope he is home before then but if he isnt then I will gladly hand out flyers whilst walking with the procession if you want me to? We have already put up 100+ posters in the following areas Kirby Cross, Kirby le Soken, Gt Oakley, Beaumont, Thorpe obviously and a few in Frinton. We have been out searching every night but it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. We have a very good contact who has alerted all the farms in the area, the postmen in Thorpe, Kirby and Frinton should all have seen a poster. I even got him mentioned on Dream100 and have contacted them again to say he is still missing, so I hope it might get on again today.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Today we are going to walk the paths in the Hall Lane area and cover that end of Thorpe in posters all the way to Little Clacton. I will also contact the police again.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

He has only run away once before a couple of years ago, he ran off with another stray dog but returned 4 hours later. Somebody may have picked him up we dont know anything for sure. We have had a good response from the posters. I am a teacher at TTC and there are posters at school all the teachers are looking for him and alot of the students know as my boys are in year 9 & 10. If he is not found they have offered to anounce it in assembly next week. We have had 3 possible sightings the first on Monday at 1.30pm in a field on his own outside Thorpe on the way to Kirby Cross. The second a man in Little Clacton walking a lookalike and yesterday 1pm a man and a women walking several dogs with him on a lead in the fields behind Hall Lane in Thorpe, when his name was called the dog looked arround and they pulled him away and went off in the direction of Thorpe StationLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you to everyone for your advice and comments. Thumper dissapeared on Sunday 21st of June from the top of Landermere Rd in Thorpe, very close to the mini roundabout. He was in our garden and we were both there, it is possible that he escaped through a gap. There was no fuss and no barking. Nobody saw him in Thorpe running arround. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, sorry to see Thumper still not turned up.  Do we know which part of the village he went missing from?  I can cross post this to my facebook page as most of my friends are Little Clacton-Thorpe-Beaumont-Kirby Borders, so they too can look out for this lovely chap.  Daughter also goes to TTC, in Landermere Rd, so she can poster school foyer if not already been done. Hope he is home asap.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Photo now on site of gorgeous Thumper. He is microchipped and was wearing a leather collar although it was quite loose so could have come off. Thumper suffers from a skin allergy so without meds his skin, particularly around the tummy area, may be quite itchy and sore.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks! Just spoken to Thumper's owners again and they're sending the photo. They are also going to register shortly as well as post a comment. On Colchester website, there's a report of a found Golden Lab dog today ID 8928. Found Mersea Beach so a bit of a distance away but as we always say you just never know and worth checking! The found dog had a black leather collar. Colchester number is 01206 282582. I will let Thumper's owners know.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have just spoken to hubby who is British Transport Police (Colchester), they will keep an eye out for him on the railways tracks as they cover that line, he did suggest putting a poster up in the Station too, commuters will then see it, if they haven't done this already.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just spoken to Thumper's owners. They have done a really great job so far ringing around, postering etc. A photo should be sent over today. Passed on the number for Westend Kennels, so he's going to get on to them straight away. He escaped from the garden, there has been one sighting of him since which was in the village but nothing else. Owner is hopefully going to register on site to then add a comment to Thumper's page in response to all your offers of help so we can know whats been done/where still needs to be covered.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry to here your dog is missing, I am only 3 miles away from Thorpe-Le-Soken, so if you need any assistance with posters or leaflets distributed please let me know.  Also I have family at Beaumont with farm land so will advise to look out in case Thumper has headed that way. Hope he turns up asap.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry to see Thumper is missing. Owners, please ensure you notify Westend Farm Kennels on 01449 737641, they kennel strays for Tendring Council. If possible it is worth you visiting there to check incase Thumper has been taken in - at the same time you can leave a poster with Thumpers photo on with them. I will call you this evening to give you more contacts, advise etc and hopefully sort the photo. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
