Bess 'n' Barney's Mum
What a lovely story to read on a Mothers Day!   I'm certain Zippy's Mum, (and Dad indeed) are on a high today - these dogs, what do they do to us !   I made my partner read the last few posts on here to emphasize just what it is that makes DogLost tick, this is what it's all about, tears and all.   (And I think he was swallowing hard too).   Welcome home Zippy, glad you decided to give your mum and dad a break, and glad dad followed all the right advice to get you back, it surely worked.   Stay safe now xx      Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Only just seen this as I was out last night looking for another dog. I am so pleased for you James and Catherine it makes what we do so worth while when a dog is finally re-united with the owners. Hope Zippy has settled back at home and that you are OK after the car crash. Take care.  AlisonLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a lovely recollection of the days events James, so very very happy to see your beautiful boy back where he belongs, and your story re-lives the many emotions that rage through you at that awful moment when you realise that your best pal is missing. So glad that the advice was followed to a T and eventually Zippy was happy to give himself up to you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well done to you James. You listened, you took it in, and you acted on advise. You can sleep well tonight. Thankyou Janie for your input and for registering Zippy on here, and thank you Ashmark for sound advice. Wonderful outcome. Love to you all, and espcially Zippy x Amended to say - so sorry about the accident James, but so pleased you are ok. Bless you. Good Night x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I meant thanks Coordinators not admin - but I'm sure you knew that. Nearly forgot! I would have posted earlier but on the journey home we we hit by a drunk driver who wrecked the side of the car at high speed and then drove away. I was left showered in glass and with minor cut to the face but hey - who cares? I got Zippy back.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I can only imagined that Zippy felt so scared and threatened that he wouldn't believe it was me. Even though I was trying my best not to be interested in him I couldn't help stealing glances. He was obviously aware of this. By being forced to speak to the motorcyclist my attention was distracted from Zippy and this seemed to made the difference. And what a difference! Joy is back in our lives again. Thank you everyone for all the helpful advice - it makes all the difference and above all restores hope. Catherine asked me to pass on thanks to Alison especially and I have to thanks Pam in Skredington for selflessly disrupting her day to help. Thanks to Jane for showing us this website. Thanks to Admin for making it all work. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

..... and isn't that just the best feeling ever!!! Christmas and Birthdays all rolled into one 'highly excitable moment.  Well done you - I know it takes a HUGE effort not to show anxiety and call out when you see your beloved dog - you obviously remained totally calm and did what you had to do to perfection. Congrats to everyone involved and a Big Welcome back to Zippy!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Further confirmations of sightings came in as I drove down. My mother had seen him only a mile or so from her house. She called him and drove after him in her car but lost him. He fled across a main road in to some woods and then scattered sheep in a distant field. He's fast! He's not called Zippy for nothing. It was strange that he fled from my mother because he's very fond of her. Another report that a man had tried to grab him but was snarled at. I hoped that it would be a formality when I arrived. Not so. By the time I arrived there had been not sightings for at least an hour but I biked though the woods and drove round the village. People were few and far between as this village in rural Lincs does not even have a shop or pub. Those I saw had not seen him. I posted posters, dropped socks, drove, biked. Nothing. Despair was returning after all the earlier hope. My wife updated me with information received about how to let the dog approach. It turned out to be invaluable. By late afternoon I was almost out of socks and posters but was cycling along a lane when I saw a dog walking along a track at the edge of a field perpendicular to the lane. At first I thought it was a spaniel but as I drew opposite the track I could see that it was Zippy about 100yds away. As I stopped and looked he became rigid and made as if about to bolt. I dropped gently to the floor on the grass verge and made conversation with the sheep. He seemed to be cautiously interested, ears pricked but very, very cautious. I continued to talk to the sheep, head bowed, only allowing myself occasional glances. Still he stood. After about 10 mins a motorcyclist approached and I though "Please don't stop" but he did. I quickly asked the kind chap to move on which he did (it turned out that he'd come to help) and strangely it seemed to be the catalyst that brought Zippy back to me as seconds later I was bowled over by a crazy collie intent on licking me to death. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When the decision was made to head north there was nothing I could do to stop my shoulders shaking and the tears tumbling. I made 22 month old Georgie look like a grown up. Even when we got home I couldn't bring myself to shut the gate - it just seemed symbolically wrong. We cried much of the night but www.Doglost did at least give us a little hope. Maybe Zippy hadn't run and run? Maybe he was still local to where he was lost? It was clear by this morning that I had to return, especially when a sighting was confirmed. The car was hastily packed with posters, smelly socks (which is one thing I have in abundance) and mountain bike. I drove back to Lincs probably faster than I should have, but my concience had no choice.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh - My - God! ....Not an expression I like, but I'm at a loss how to sum up the past 48 hours. I didn't know how much I loved that crazy mutt. First the trauma. Has he been run over? Is he injured? Did he suffer? It's lambing season where he was lost - has a farmer shot him? Then the guilt. I left him with family 100 miles from home. I abandoned him. Does he wonder why? He can't understand. He didn't know we were coming for him. Then the trauma again. We falsely assumed he would run and run to try and get home, so after driving round for hours with no sighting we felt we had no option but to drive home ourselves, especially with a 22 month old in the car. Leaving the area to head for home was heart breaking.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Great news everyone - Zippy IS FOUND and reunited with his family!  I don't know the details but am sure that James will post once he's back up North and can get on the website - it's been very 'spasmodic' today.  Thanks Ashmark for further advice and Shirley for the addition to your Valgrays website and to anyone else who has been helping aid the return of this young tearaway! Fab help again by Doglost.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for the text Ashmark to tell me there had been a sighting. Thats fab news and he will circle back, I am sure. Great that owners have taken the advice on board and have responded to the sighting by returning to the area. If you scent from where the sighting was, back to the house, and be sure to leave a way open, with plenty of scenting around the entrance, he may well find own way back. He will be searching for your scent. If he knows your car well, is there anywhere you could park up with the doors open? You could place blankets around the car, and your scent, and if the weather stays fine try a portable barbie. The smell of cooking sausages may do the trick. Also, perhaps some familiar sounds? Tunes you play? Squeeky toys? Mobile phone ring tones? whistle? What can you think of? Good luck.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have just spoken to owner and the family are doing all the right things to try and get Zippy home. She did tell me that Zippy is not too confident around men so if anyone is thinking of joining in the search just be aware of this. Have left my telephone number in case they need to get in touch.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This morning Zippy was sighted !  However, he seems very confused and is not responding well to being called.  James is heading down to Spanby with all speed, armed with all the information Yasa has emailed him (and presumably his mobile!) along with Zippy's blankets etc.  He's only about 2 miles from the relation's home where he was staying on holiday so that's good news - COME ON, ZIPPY, TIME TO COME HOME now!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks Yasa - I know the whole family will get the same help and support that so many generous members gave me when Rambo was on the loose for 4 weeks nearly two years ago.  Fingers tightly crossed that Zippy finds his way back to his holiday home very quickly.   Janie MLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Copied  from circumstances box:- Ran away on holiday at family's house whilst being minded. Zippy was let out into the large fenced garden around 8.30pm - 9.30pm on the evening of 19th March, and has somehow got out, and not been seen since. The area is surrounded by vast farmland. Jane - thank you for your email to admin. Someone will be in contact with your sister. All the details and information you have given has been noted. I will email the information I sent to them, to you also, in case you can help. Good Luck.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have sent several emails containing information sheet, advice on postering and guidlines, plus vets, rescues and dog warden contact numbers. Have also sent scenting guidlines. Good Luck and hope these help and Zippy will be home soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Owner - So sorry to see Zippy has gone missing. Thank you for registering him on Doglost. We will do all we can to help. Great that he is microchipped, so hopefuly he will be picked up and returned to you soon. If not already done so, please inform the Dog Warden for the area, the police, rescue centres and vets. Local vets can be found by clicking on ANY UK VET button beneath our flashing photos. Please be aware that dogs taken to the pound and unclaimed, can be re-homed after only seven days, so it is very important to phone them all every day. You also need to poster the area missing from, and further afield, immediately. You may need hundreds of posters. Place them in plasic sleeves and also hand them to dog walkers in the area. The more eyes looking the better. Also leave some items of your clothing and his bedding in the area of loss with your scent. Most dogs circle back to where they last saw their owners, and this will hopefully keep him in the area. Also leave some smelly food, such as tripe, sardines or pilchards. Your poster can be printed from this page. When fully logged in, click where you see DOG POSTER 1 in small text on the left hand side just above the dogs details boxes. The poster will open for you to print. Perhaps you could leave us a comment with info of what has been done and any sightings. I strongly advise you to poster all pubs and pub car parks in the area. The locals will spread the word of a dog missing. Good Luck. I will email some contact numbers.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
