This is wonderful news Stephanie, I am sure that your new pup will allow you to have love and devotion in your household again, as Sukimax has said you never replace a loved pet but you learn to love again, I don't regret for a minute getting a new pup after I lost Angus as they are all so different in character and nature but the one contstant is unconditional love - you can't beat it. Take care xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi, I am so pleased for you, I am sure the new puppy is going to help you so much, It will please Nate too, to see you playing and giving your heart to some one else, The mourning will go on but Nate will always be there, I have photos by my bed of Meg and all the other babies i have lost, I say Good morning and Goodnight to them all, They all go on holiday with me in the caravan, Plus my husband and my four  scallywags, Some people think i am loopy but i dont care,  It is the way i feel,  What have you called your new baby i would love to know and the boys must be thrilled,  Losing your pet take a piece of your heart away and for you it must have been dreadful with all that you had already gone through, I hope this is the start of some peace in your life, My thoughts are with you all.   SukimaxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello Stephanie,I agree with the last comments too, and especially about not doing anything until YOU feel ok about it, but its obvious to all of us how much love you have to give and there are some very desperate little souls out there in need of love and care, some who are bereaved themselves after being someone's dear pet then losing their owner. When my first rescue boy died at 15+ following a harrowing 2 years of nursing, we were devastated, but wouldn't get another dog for months as we felt it would be disloyal to his memory, then we bravely drove over to Mutts (local rescue) to offer his beds and leads etc, and soon after that we were coming come with our beautiful collie girl Fly, Fly sadly had terminal cancer and experts told us 3 wks to 3 months, but she wasn't ready to go and lived almost 2 more years, precious years, and then sadly when lost our girl too, we decided there was no special number of days or weeks, or even months to wait for a suitable gap, and looked on the Mutts dogs page and found our lovely little Annie who we have had over a year now. None replaced the previous, they were all very different dogs but all special to us. No-one can say when, but please do eventually adopt one of those hundreds of little innocents needing a loving home. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Stephanie, I hope you do get another dog when you are ready, clearly you and your family made Nate happy and just think, somewhere there is another lucky little dog who will think they have landed firmly on its paws when you take him/her home. As I said before, don't feel guilty, Nate is safe and happy now and would want you to make another little fella happy. I know it must be torturous not knowing what happened to Nate between the time you lost him and the time you found him and I can only pray, in time, the pain will lessen. There is nothing better when you are feeling low than a wet nose on your hand!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Stephanie, I am so sorry for your loss. Several years ago my beautiful GSD X, Jet, died and we were all devastated, our Airedale Terrier was so depressed and the house seemed so empty without her. Just a few days later, by accident really, we came across a GSD pup who needed a home urgently so she came home to us. To begin with I felt as if I was being disloyal to my lovely Jet but as the time went by the joy of a new addition to our family was more than the sorrow of losing our beautiful baby. Even now we talk about Jet every day and I know she will be happy we have given another dog the home she enjoyed all her life. So if you do feel you can have another dog, don't feel guilty, your little Nate will be happy that another doggy is helping your with your grief for him.XX SarahLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

November last year I had to make the difficult decision to have one of my cats pts. I had been backwards and forwards to the vet with her for a week. I had her pts on the Sunday as I could not see her suffering anymore. To be honest she got progressively worse the more the vets treated her as they did not know what was wrong with her and everytime they told me it was something the tests came back as not being that, they said she was unique as tests kept coming back with results unheard of in cats . Anyway what I would like to say is that on the Friday I do not believe the vets should have let me bring her home but whilst I was sitting waiting to collect her there was a mother and young child in with their cat and I heard the little girl say to her mum will Casper be alright, this made my ears prick up. Casper not an unusual name for a white cat maybe but Casper was the father of my little girl who was pts 5 years earlier on that exact date. Coincidence maybe but my thoughts are of all the cats that could have been in on that day to be in at the same time as me on the anniversary I think Casper was telling me it was her time that he had come to get her and they would be watching and waiting for me together until we meet again just like your Nate will be watching and waiting for you.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi I have just read the beautiful poem about your lovely lovely boy and and the tears are streaming down my face, it has beautiful words and so very very true. I hope it gives you some comfort to read them. You are obviously such a loving caring person and your beloved boy had the most wonderful years with you and loved you dearly. It might help if you had a reading, I sent a photo of my boy to a pet healer and it was quite remarkable. We all here for each other so I hope all our messages are helping. hi sukimax,i dont know what it was with nate ,he played with any thing that looked like a ball .he was beautiful & in the thought of discussing it with the boys .i have done that .we agreed the only way we would have another dog .it would come from nates breeders .where if possible we would .have something connecting to nate.other than that the bereavement situation is still to painful. my boys where only 22/12/7. when there father died .so everything has turned extremely roar again in a matter of a short time.so i do hope knowbody gets upset with this .& how we feel .knowing there is rescue dogs out there that need loving homes.nomatter where the dog comes from it will not replace  my little man nate  xxx stephanieLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Stephanie, Just a thought, I dont know how old your boys are, But couldnt you make this a plan around your table, Maybe the boys would feel like having a discussion about it all or maybe they are not ready, My lads are both in their thirties but i have asked them what they think and my grandkids and they feel they would have liked to have chatted and planned everything, but most of all to talk about Nate and who he would have liked,  I have also bought some satsumas today and believe me Molly, Poppy and Luci are not impressed with their new balls in fact Luci curled her lips up  and shuddered, I also find it uncanny that my husband is called Raymond and my sons birthday is today as well, I do hope your day has not been awful and send you my deepest thoughts, Love Sukimax and all her family.  XXXXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear Stephanie, I can only agree with what both Sukimax and Angus have said.   No other dog will replace your dear Nate but to have another little person in your lives and your home would help you all so much.   I'm sure there is a little someone out there just waiting for you to give your love to, and you will be so richly rewarded, they love so unconditionally and you will feel so much better for being able to love another who will so quickly find its way into your hearts.   Love and hugs from me and my two xx   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Stephanie, I so admire your strength and drive through all that life has thrown at you, I can only tell you my experinence when my beloved Angus went to the bridge we were so distraught none of us ate or spoke for days just cried all the time and our other dog was withdrawn and depressed, no other dog would ever fill his paws but 3 months on we took on another boy pup of the same breed, he has brought life back into our home and fills me with joy every day, his character is so different to my first love but our home is complete again. My dear Angus lives in our bedroom at the foot of our bed in his casket and a beautiful picture of him sits next to that. I talk to him every day and its two and a half years since he passed. I think that when ever you are ready to have another dog you will enjoy the companionship and unequivical love that they give then go for it, you will be more than rewarded for making that choice. Hi Stephanie,  Oh yes please do that, Less than two weeks after Meg died i was begged to give a home to a 1 year old shetland sheepdog, I have to admit it was a huge decision because i thought i was betraying Megs memory,  but no i still cried and cried over her, but also got cuddles from Molly she helped me so much and i saw in her a chance to get better, since then i have adopted another two shelties and a rather large crossbreed,  Meg and all my other pets are all in a photo frame next to my bed,  I say good morning and good night to all of them and still shed tears even now, But you know those children of yours need to have someone else to love and the chance to rehome another friend into your lives will help you all,  Nate will always be there in your home and your hearts, No one can ever take that away, I hope i have been of some help to, love sukimax. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hello Stephanie, Please wish your son a Happy Birthday, You sound as if you have lovely boys to look after you, Dont forget to tell them that their Dad is probably playing ball with Nate and singing Happy Birthday and try to have a cheery day just for Michael,  You know i take my dogs out every night and look up to the stars because i have at least 9 picked out with my babies names on them,  I have not lost any pets for the last three years since Meg, and i truly dread it, It makes you realise how precious life is, I have been reading Stacey lurchers story and between you two, what terrific women you are to care so much about the other and other peoples losses,  Maybe in a way this trend is enlarging and one day the country will see what pet lovers go through and the laws will become stronger against the cruelty that we see,  I hope so because i for one will do anything to make my babies life better and no they are not just dogs they are our life,  Love SukimaxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Stephanie, I have been following the posts here over the days and I am so very sorry to have read about your loss of dear Nate. It is so very clear how deeply you loved him and how much he did for you and your family. Nothing can ever take that away. This love, which still goes on, is far stronger than death. Many will tell you that it gets better with time. That's what they told me when I lost my dogs in the past, but i couldn't believe that at the time and I imagine that you probably can't believe it for you. All I can say is that all the wonderful people who have written on these posts will , many of them, also have lost their dearly loved dogs in death. I don't think we can ever fully experience another's grief, but I think we might begin to uderstand your grief just a bit. Your grief now is the measure of your love for Nate. Know that we are all supporting you with our love and prayers. God bless you.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep. I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here." I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me. I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more. I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there. I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me." You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there. It's possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away." You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you. The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "Good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning." And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side. I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out... then come home to be with me Love Nate xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Like every true dog lover - I feel and share your grief.  Words are so very inadequate at times like this - but sometimes knowing that there are people out there who care can give comfort. I am so very sorry for your loss.  Perhaps you may find speaking to someone may help? The Pet Bereavement Support Service operate a freephone number, available to everyone. 0800 096 6606 The lines are open Monday to Sunday 8.30am-8.30pm. I once saw a quote taken from a pet's headstone: "No heaven will not ever heaven be, unless my dogs are there to  welcome me". I have always taken comfort from that. Wishing you all the best. This is my first post on Nate's page but I've been following from the beginning. Like Bess n Barneys mum I have been back and forth to Nates page the last couple of days but have felt unable to post anything of any worth to you. Many a tear has been shed for Nate, for you, and for your family: tears shed by strangers never fortunate enough to know your gorgeous little boy. I have tried to put myself in your situation but its too painful to think of losing my boy, some people don't understand this but true dog lovers will. What a beautiful little dog Nate was Stephanie, such a cheeky face, and how fortunate he was to have a family that love him so much. I am so so sorry for your loss that I can't even begin to put it into words.
When you feel that little tingle around the bottom of your legs, just know its your Nate come to say hello and give you some love.
You're in my thoughts Stephanie.

Dear Stephanie, every time I've come onto this thread in the last few days I've sat with tears streaming down my face and been unable to say anything to you that will help make you feel better at this awful time.   Now though I've realised that although I can't make it better I can at least say how so very sorry I am for what's happened to dear Nate and that so many of us understand how you're feeling at the moment.   You have had more to contend with than many of us over the last few years though, and will know best how to cope with this latest tragedy that life has so cruelly chosen to deal you.   Keep thinking about your dear little man, as I know you will, and know that he was loved and cared for and he will continue to love and care for you, forever at your side.   Love and hugs to you from me and my two xx    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Oh Stephanie, You are such an inspiration to us all,  I cannot compare any of my tragedies to what you must be going through but i can tell you when i lost my Meg three years ago i thought i would die, I couldnt breathe for thinking of her my days were a blurr but i had other people to think about and  I found doglost and other sites which fill me with such a desire to get up in the mornings to see what has occured,  Some people say i am pathetic but it has helped me so much to try to help other people, It is off no use to tell you it gets better because that happens very slowly but you have wonderful children and friends around you and like me you must know that the time you spent with Nate were so precious and he will be watching you  and loving you and thanking you for his wonderful life,  Love Sukimax. xxxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Stephanie - I have been through this hurt and know how you feel. Let me tell you what I learned at work today. My colleague had been looking to adopt a rescue dog for some time. He and his family were presented with a beautiful 9 month old whippet boy who they adopted and he fitted in perfectly. This was 6 weeks ago. He had had 6 homes within a couple of months for various reasons and had been left alone at home for long periods of time at one point so was suffering from separation anxiety. We looked at methods of overcoming this and he was gradually overcoming his fears. My colleague bought his boy everything he needed-including his own passport to go on holiday with the family in a few weeks' time. Unfortunately a few days ago this little one suffered a fit and died in my colleague's arms. No-one could have foreseen such a thing. What I want to say to you is that your Nate had 3 lovely years with a family that obviously loved him to bits and he lacked nothing. So many dogs have short lives lacking in such quality of life. Nate was one of the privileged.Think on the positives. It's not a question of luck, just circumstances. Some of us are made to help others, as you've proved to be your strength. Continue to do this and enjoy the satisfaction that this brings, along with the fact that you gave Nate a lovely life. Linda  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hope this does not make you to sad but i just thought it was beautiful. Its Called My Treasured Friend I lost a treasured friend today the little dog who used to lay his gentle head upon my knee and share his silent thoughts with me... He'll come no longer to my call,  Retrieve no more his favorite ball, A voice far greater than my own Has called him to his golden throne. Although my eyes are filled with tears, I thank Him for the happy years He let him spend down here with me and for his love and loyalty. When it is time for me to go and join him there, this much I know... I shall not fear the transient dark For he will greet me with his bark,  Love Sukimax. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear Stephanie, I am so sorry to read this awful news, You have been a pilllar of strength for so many others, during this ordeal too. You will be feeling every emotion a dog-owner goes through at this sad time, and its right to grieve, but don't continue to believe only bad things will happen to you, things will improve and I hope when the time is right however far away that is, that you and your family will open your hearts and home to another needy soul. Thinking of you and Nate. FlyLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is hearbreaking and just too cruel to comprehend. My heart goes out to you all at this time. Sometimes and to some people, heartbreak comes in bucket fulls. You have had your fill now, no more.  Maybe little Nate has gone to keep the childrens daddy company in heaven.  I am sending healing thoughts and prayers to you all.

Stephanie, words seem so inadequate at a time like this, life seems so unfair and I am so sorry that you had to be reunited with dear Nate in this saddest of ways. You have been an inspiration to other owners and your devotion to Nate has been very clear in your postings, The only thing I can say to you now is you are able to say goodbye to your little man and I strongly believe that he will always be 'at your side' and will have taken a paw shaped hole from your heart. Try to remember him having fun and making you laugh. We are all here for you if you need to share your feelings. Take care of yourself and your family. Sandie xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Stephanie, I am so very sorry to read of Nate's sad end and i know you and your family will be totally devastated. Nobody could have done more to find him than you did. You first came to my notice, not on the posts on your/Nate's site, but when I read of how you were helping other owners who had lost their dogs - like Max and Jess. You have been amazing in tirelessly searching for Nate and at the same time giving such care and support to others. You are one very special lady and you certainly deserve lots and lots of better luck now. And now you need and you will get all our love and support. You and your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers daily. God bless you.     Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks for updating Nate's page and welcome on board DL.  I deliver the Merseymart which is a free local paper in my area and belongs to the same group as some of the free papers in your area.  Yes the weather was bad last week and your delivery person may well have not managed to get to certain areas.  Contact vets and leave/send a poster, very often dogs are reported to vets, go as far out as you can, he may have been picked up and taken out of the area. You have been doing a brilliant job already, you must keep up with the postering and making people aware of Nate.  Sometimes it can take a bit of time before the posters etc to get to the right person who may have picked him up or know where he is.  I will email you some further advice and ask another Co-ordinator to do some various size posters, which I do normally send but unable to at the moment.  Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Nate's family have really tragic circumstances attached to his loss. Nate is not only a constant companion to a disabled child but been a lifeline to the whole family when the children's father died last year. Lets hope and pray this family get some good news quickly. Nate's owners have been contacting all local kennels, vets, dog wardens and groomers. They have done lots of postering and Nate has appeared in local papers for the last two weeks and will be in an evening paper tonight. There were a few possible sightings of him earlier on but nothing for almost two weeks now. Hoping he his home with his family very soon xx PamLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
