I am really very, very sorry to hear about Benson. I was so hoping that we could get him back. They never really die you know and often come back to visit. Some people are lucky enough to see them and there is no rainbow bridge. They are normally looked after by a family member until you are all reunited again. He will be happy in his new home even though he will miss you of course.  XXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Arion, I am so very sorry to see that it was indeed Benson, and thank you so much for your lovely email. I know you thought the world of him, and cannot believe it has happened. My love and thoughts are with you and your family at this sad time. Run free at Rainbow Bridge dear Benson xx

RAINBOW BRIDGE

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm Spring weather. The old frail animals are young again. They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing, they are not with their special person who loved them so much on Earth.
Each day they all run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears rise up! The eyes are staring! Then suddenly, this one runs from the group! You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and you both embrace. Your face is licked again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separate

I am so sorry to hear about Benson. Some years agao a little spaniel we owned dod just the same and jumped off a large field staright across the path of a car and was instanly killed. The only thing I can say is that she knew nothing about it and this was our only solace in the shock we felt. R.I.P Benson xx

We have confirmed that Benson was killed in a car accident as soon as he ran away.  No one was hurt, thankfully.  We have no idea why he ran onto the road up a steep bank when there was acres of parkland all around. The motorist reported the accident to police and the council recovered his body.  We have collected the body and buried him today. Thank you all so much for your help and support. We hope your dogs stay safe.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sadly a call has come in as a result of the newspaper article, which suggests that Benson may have been involved in a fatal RTA immediately he went missing. Owners are of course devastated, and will not know for sure until speaking with the police tomorrow. I am so very sorry to have to report this, and really did want to get this lovely boy home. He was a much loved and loyal pet. It is so unfair sometimes. We will have to wait for confirmation tomorrow. My love and thoughts are with Bensons owners tonight x  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks mab and arion for your update. Dogs do travel in quite large triangles concidering their fitness. He could be travelling a fifteen mile route, but would have thought he would have picked up on somewhere he recognised near home. You are doing right to widen the search as he could have tagged onto another dogwalker who has taken him home and not reported him found. That person could also have come from out of town, and taken him to another area. I have emailed his poster to some more contacts this afternoon, and have emailed you some more information and a couple more ideas. Still early days, so keep going, and stay positive. Well done. I was lucky to get the pic and letter in, I hope someone with info sees it.  We have had no sightings or reports of him.  After combing the rowing lake area it seems he isn't there but perhaps he will move back to where he was lost?  It is possible that he panicked and ran a long way to find Neil so he may be in town, Longthorpe or along the river upstream.  We have searched Bluebell wood and Ferry Meadows which he knows well and there are posters, plus we are asking dog walkers. Mab thank you so much for your help especially getting the word to street wardens.  If Benson has gone further we are relying on people spotting him.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Saw Benson's picture in the ET. When I tried to get poor Quiggley's in a year or so ago they didn't want to know. If he went from the staunch he could have gone straight towards town or over to Longthorpe. I spoke to the street wardens today but Michael who puts the posters up for me on the market and already given them the details.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Will do Yasa, It is as if she has never been away. Just the same and still doesn't want to go for a walk! She did have some very good people at Cricketers who were wonderful.   What direction were you heading when Benson disappeared? You should talk to dog walkers at Ferry Meadows as they will look out for him and don't forget to have your phone number handy to give to them. I am sure that he will be found soon. There are so many people taking their dogs in the area.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thanks all on here , for your help, and to arion for your update. I was going to contact you for news tonight, but thanks for posting on here. That will be a brilliant help now we can keep in touch. Nice to see you on here mab, and Give my love to Bubbles x  ( For Arion, Bubbles was lost for two months all over Christmas and New Year and only recently reunited. Do take a look at her photos on the reunited page. We were all so thrilled when the little monkey was eventually caught LOL !) I am glad you have done the scenting. Please keep doing this every day if you can, as rain will wash it away. And great you have got more posters up and something in the papers. Just keep it up, and keep going. Someone must know something. Its quite possible he is now very frightened and is laying low for a couple of days, but if he is loose, he will somehow find a food supply and water. Look for any signs of ripped open bin bags for example. Good Luck !  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have had posters put up around the market and in Wilkinsons. They are very good with my doggie stuff. Also gave a mini one to a dog walker who said "you never know".Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all for the advice and support.  We have put up more posters and are in touch with dog warden.  An advert is in the local paper.  No sign of Benson around the area where he was lost but we will keep checking. We have tried a safe place and smelly trail too.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Owners emails are bouncing back on me. Have sent text to confirm it is correct. Benson was being walked off lead with another dog in Thorpe Meadows parklands when he just seemed to disappear. Owner had just entered a culvert which passes under a major road and was in front of Benson who had stopped to sniff up the bank. he must have only been out of site for about five seconds before owner and other dog retraced their steps to find Benson, but he had gone. At the top of the bank there are crash barriers for the dual carriageway, but owner searched for hours and no sign of Benson, or thankfully an RTA. This happened at about 10.00am on 22nd January about  three miles from home. Benson is familiar with the parkland, but this morning had been walked slightly further than normal, so was slightly out of his comfort zone. Authorities have been notified. Owner feels that Benson may well have got on the scent of something when he disappeared. Publicity and postering are being stepped up, so we hope there will be good news soon.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have spoken to owners and given hopefully a lot of the advice they should need, including scenting advice and  contact numbers. I will be emailing more information through later to them, and will also update this page with more details.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
