I can't begin to imagine what youn are going through.  It is bad enough when you loose a pet and can bury / cremate their body.  You are in my thoughts. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm not surprised that they are trying to cover their backs as what they have done is against the law.  The person/people who hit Jay committed the first offence by not reporting the accident (sometimes people fail to do this simply because they don't care but more often than not it's because they fear the vet bills that may follow).  If a dog is found by the side of the road then it's obvious that the accident has not been reported and the person who finds it is then responsible for reporting the find, and certainly not disposing of the body before doing so. One of my bugbears is that cats aren't covered by the same law.  The reasoning behind this being that despite cats being domestic animals, they are free to roam. Even if an animal is not chipped or tagged or both and there is no way of tracing the owner, the council are supposed to keep a log of all domestic animals found on the road, giving the date, approximate time and as detailed as possible a description of the animal. Having said all that, I know of some councils that are good enough to keep the bodies of unidentified and unclaimed cats and dogs in freeze at their depots for 7-14 days in case they are claimed. I hope you do get some answers, JayJay.  In the absence of Jay's body that you could have buried or have had cremated yourself, I can only echo what's already been said.  Plant some sort of memorial tree, shrub, etc where you can always remember him or maybe even make an annual donation in his memory, on the day he died or the day he was born or the day you brought him home, to a dog charity or a local shelter.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I feel so sad for you. This may sound strange but I found writing a letter helps a lot. My cat was run over and I didn't find his body for 4 days so I couldn't say my goodbyes or give him that last cuddle so I wrote down all my feelings, told him how much I loved him and how sorry I was that he was on his own at the end and put the letter under the big stone that I put on his grave. I know you can't have a grave but his soul will be whereever you are and a lovely tree in the garden with a letter planted in it's roots may bring some tiny comfort.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a sad loss, such a beautiful boy. I lost one of my shelties in a road accident, and like fiona suggested I planted a little bush in his memory in the garden, it gave me somewhere to focus on. You will hold Jay in your heart forever, the memories will give you comfort. Also agree with others, councils should be more responsible and contact should have been made, when you feel up to it get some answers. Bev xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes a 'gentle reminder' of the councils duty would be advised. How many more go unrecorded? If it were not for that kind passer by the owner would never have known and that's worse than knowing believe me. To the owner.......So sorry you can't be reunited and not being able to bury your baby is terrible but you could plant a special tree or as little patch of flowers so you always have somewhere to go and remember happier times.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is so very sad.   Poor Jay, rest in peace, lovely boy. Jayjay, you probably don't feel like doing this at the moment, but at some point, and not too far ahead, you need to get in touch with the Council again, and speak to whoever is in charge of whoever disposed of Jay's body.   They need to understand that they should have made an attempt to inform you about Jay's accident at the very least, and as he was chipped this could have been done.   And I feel you should have been given the opportunity to have his body back.   If you get no satisfaction, ask for a complaints form and make a complaint.   They all have complaints procedures and this will then be dealt with properly.   As you say, Jay was chipped, and informing you is the very least you should have been able to expect.   I feel so sorry about this.    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am so sorry to hear this.  RIP Jay. I hope the council workers know that they are breaking the law by not reporting the death of a dog in an RTA.  If they don't, they should be ............ ahem ............ gently reminded of this.  I would if it was my dog or a patient of mine.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
