Absolutely disgusting.  I really hope that when Hennie and family recover enough to be more angry than sad, that they pursue this matter with the appropriate regulatory bodies, given that procedures seem to have been bypassed.  It must have been clear to these people that a dog as fit as she was, despite her great age, was loved and cherished and simply lost, and that someone was looking for her.  Some people are so slack and corrrupt that they do not deserve the status they hold.  Heads should roll. Hennie and Delphi, one wonderful day you will find your way back to each other, at the bridge.  Sleep tight beautiful. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

When I returned home last night from a few days away i was totally devastated to read what had happened to poor Delphi and her owners. Having spoken to her owner when Delphi's details were put on site i know they had done ALL THE RIGHT THINGS and INFORMED ALL THE RIGHT PEOPLE  to get their much loved girl home again ! I am so so sorry this happened and my thoughts are with you all. Run free at the bridge beautiful Delphi .......... you will never be forgotten  Pam xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Milly's Mum, I know what you are meaning when you say this has done you in, because it was the first thing I came across when I logged in yesterday, and I could think of nothing else all day and shed a lot of tears over Delphi. This poor old girl should have been in the arms of her mum to end her days. I know it is not our place to take this further as it is the owner's choice, but if there is anything we Doglost people can do for the owner, I know we will do it, as we are all of the same mind on this matter. Hennie please let us know if you need help. We are all there for you, although I know this will not take the place of your lovely girl . God bless you all xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Well what is happening to our society ? to put people into positions of dog warden who feel that they have the right to make a decision on this sweet dog purely because she is old, rather than granting her the "7 day respite" at least, to allow owners to claim her, although it sounds as if they couldnt even make a connection that this may be the missing dog they were already notified of.  And the vet ! I think we should have a "name and shame" section, these persons should be accountable for their actions, this little lady may have been old but you could see from the photos she was someones pet not just a neglected stray, how dare they make these decisions. As a society we should be worried, what about the elderly resident found wandering from a nursing home.... with people like this in positions of authority ! Surely we could start some sort of petition to ensure the 7 day rule is stuck to ? and get the councils to pledge to uphold this, and publish on this website which councils have agreed to it ? .. we the rate payers pay their wage after all. Rant over...Rest in peace, owners you have given her some wonderful years, and please keep the good memories close to your heart.XLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This reunited story has really saddened me. To see those lovely photos of this precious old girl has just about done me in this evening and I can't begin to imagine how Delphi's family are feeling. How cruel not to allow Delphi's family to make that final decision (that's assuming it needed to be made). I feel quite disgusted by the acts of the dog warden and vet - shame on you both. Rest in peace dear Delphi - sweet dreams beautiful girl...x

Oh I'm so sorry, this is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have seen.  I think everyone has said what we all think, so all I can do is offer my sincere sympathies and pray that lovely Delphi will run free and young at Rainbow Bridge until you meet again. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Poor old girl.
How awful to get to that age and be treated like something that means nothing to anyone.  The DW's actions were careless but the vet's actions were heartless.
I can't begin to express how upset and angry I am, and I can only begin to imagine how you must be feeling.
If it happened to my pet,  I would not let it rest.  Some may say that in these times it would be very harsh to want someone to pay with their job but there was no room for sentiment in the vet's and warden's actions so I don't see why any sentiment should be spared for them.
RIP Delphi.

OMG - what a horrible end for a doggy so old. I cannot imagine the pain you are going through, BUT, this is not the first time a similar story of a dog not being recognised by the authorities has not been handed back to her owner when found, and a similar ending has happened. The tears are tripping me so, I cannnot imagine the pain you are going through. God bless you all. xxx I know that if this was my dog, and this had happened, after the initial shock and  pain, would come anger, and I would not let this rest until I got answers and then I would take it as far as I could, to teach them that they should not, and cannot do this. Perhaps it would help the next dog who lands in their hands in the same position.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Firstly, my thoughts are with you Hennie & family . I am so sorry that you have lost Delphi in this way. Run free sweet girl.xx Secondly , I am horrified to read what has occurred here. As has already been said the dog warden & vet have to be taken to task & made to explain their actions. In both cases their positions of authority has to be reviewed. A repeat of this neglect of duty needs to be avoided in the future. Their blatant disregard for following the proper procedures & acting on information given to them directly from Delphi's owner is completely unacceptable. What an appalling way to behave. Hennie & family,as CJ has said ,if you find it just too painful to persue this at the moment then I for one ,would be more than willing to make enquiries or help in any way. This is just awful, my thoughts go out to you and your family Hennie. I too echo what has already been said, the council and vets need to give you answers. You did all the right things, regularly phoning up the council to check etc but still they failed you. I hope you can find the strength to pursue this, the full facts need to be bought to light and action needs to be taken if indeed, as it sounds, there was wrong doing. As CJ has said, if you feel you cannot personally do this and need some assistance, please do get in touch with us. You're not alone. Take care. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

What a sad ending for you and your family, I really feel for you all. Take comfort in the fact that you had 19 wonderful years together. Both the dog warden and vet need to be taken to task over this, don't let them get away with it. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I can only echo everyones comments and disgust at what has happened. I feel so sorry for you and your family to be denied the final say in your much loved memeber of your family. I really hope you will feel strong enough to take advice from the comments and make enquiries but if this will be too painful for you then please ask as i am sure that someone on here would only be too willing to ask the questions on your behalf. This is disgraceful. I too hope you will be making enquiries and if you find there was no specific reason to pts other than Delphi being old, taking this further with the RCVS and Council. It could be that it was time for Delphi to go but how dare they deny you your right to be with her in her last moments. Sweet dreams Delphi XXLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

WHY?????  This is just simply terrible.  I don't understand why this has bee allowed to happen, and surely the DW has to keep the dog for 7 days??  Hennie I am sure you are utterly devastated; this is just unforgivable.  I do hope that when you feel able to that you will ask for an official enquiry into what has happened here.  If this can be prevented from happening again then some good may come out of this terrible situation.  Take care of yourself and remember the god times with your lovely girl.  Run free sweetheart xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

How terrible.  I am so sorry for you and poor Delphi.
I am also extremely angry as I am a vet.  This vet's actions are shocking unless the dog had sustained an injury that was beyond treatment.  A dog that is reasonably healthy for its age is not likely to become life-threateningly ill as a result of one day on the streets.
I would try to find out the condition that Delphi was found in.  However, don't lead the vet, don't give him/her ideas for their answer.  Don't ask if Delphi was injured or for some reason appeared very ill (rather than just old or understandably tired).  Just ask what condition Delphi was found in and what condition Delphi was in when brought to the vet.  If no reasonable or convincing answer is forthcoming,  I would sue them for all they were worth.  It wouldn't bring my pet back but it would make them think twice before taking the lazy option next time.  That's if there was a next time because such actions for no valid reason can lead to a vet being struck off.
Sorry for my rant but I really am angry about this.  Some are a disgrace to my chosen profession.

This has made me feel really, really sad.  I am so sorry that Delphi never made it home, you did all you could to find her.  I cannot believe what happened with the dog warden and the vet, it is just not fair!!!  RIP 'Dear Delphi',  take care owners, she must have been a very special dog and much loved to get to the grand old age of 19.  Kind Regards JulieLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hennie, I am horrified to read your story, and so sorry for your loss. I know that what if's and why's will not change anything for you at this terrible time but i do not understand how she could have been PTS unless she was injured - I thought the duty  of care was to hold for 7 days before any action. This is just so terrible. You have done everything right and still the authorities cannot make a match. Rest in Peace sweet Delphi.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is just awful.   To lose an old friend in this most unnecessary way is the cruellest thing imaginable.   Has the vet surgery given any explanation for why they took this drastic course of action?   Unless it was deemed to be necessary in order to prevent further suffering, then I think this is unforgivable.   And how come, when both the vet and the dog warden were contacted, they still didn't manage to make the connection?   Poor Delphi, and poor owners.  I feel so sad for you.  Rest in peace, lovely Delphi xx       Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear All Just to let you know that we have been reunited with Delphi, all be it a day too late.
She was picked up by the dog warden the day after she went missing (I had notified the dog warden on the day she went missing and phoned everyday since and each day they said that no dogs had been picked up in our area). The dog warden took her to our local vets, who I also notifed the day she went missing and the vets immediately put her to sleep because she was old. We were not notified by either the vets or the dog warden that she had been found.
After visiting all the kennels today, I decided to call in at the vets to ask if they would put up a poster. She was at the vets awaiting being sent to a pet crematorium on Monday.
I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone at doglost.co.uk for all their help and support in trying to find Delphi. The website is an excellent idea, and I shall certainly keep browsing the website in order to try and help others in my local area.

Hennie, welcome to the site. I'm so sorry you have no good news as yet for us. I really cannot imagine where this lady has gone. Apart from falling down somewhere or being shut in, it seems so strange. You need to keep on with the posters and leaflets - just keep telling everyone, and try to get something in all of your local papers and freebie papers regarding her disappearance. I do pray that someone has picked her up for her own safety, and she is being cared for somewhere. Do please keep us updated. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Dear All, Thank you for your kind comments and all the advice I have received through this website. Its all so much appreciated thank you. Unfortunately, no news as yet. Have been out searching again today, and have also done a poster campaign around the area and keep phoning the local kennels everyday, just in case she's been picked up. Fingers crossed we'll find her soon.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have spoken to Delphi's owners and so far there has been no news or sightings of this senior girl. it is not thought she would be capable of wandering off very far on her own. There is open farmland nearby and they have informed the local farmer. The owners have phoned the local stray kennels and are postering and searching the area over and over again. I so hope we have news of Delphi very soon x Pam  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Helena - I have emailed you an information sheet, plus an A4 poster and some smaller posters for handouts and for posting through doors. I do hope these help with your search, or better still you wont need them at all, and she will be home safe in the morning. Good Luck !Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Helena - so sorry your lovely Delphi has gone missing. How terrible for such an elderly lady. Thank you for registering on Doglost and uploading the  photographs. Your poster is available, and can be printed from Delpi?s page by selecting Dog Poster 1 . This will also be used by us and our helpers for cross matching any dogs that are found.    Please notify all dog wardens, police , animal shelters and vets, and leave us a comment with exactly where your dog has gone missing from, and the circumstances. To leave comments you must be logged in ( left hand side ?log in button)  and then once on your dogs page, click by the blue cross where it says ’add a comment’. We will do all we can to help.   You need to poster widely immediately, and inform all of your neighbours she is missing. Put posters through the doors or better still, speak to them and ask if you can check their gardens. I hope there are no danger areas such as ponds or swimming pools. She surely couldn?t have gone far. I do hope we have helpers in your area to help search. Good Luck, and I hope she is home with you soon.    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
