I have not looked on this thread for a while but I do agree that Lucky's owner did not pull out all the stops, you have got it quite right, gelertgwynne, in fact I do not need to go back through all the messages to remember that Lucky's owner, then posting under the name of Lola Keen, said she did not have time to go out postering, she was relying on someone else finding her dog for her by dint of the tag.   I said as forcefully as I felt able that she couldn't rely on the tag, or other people, if she wasn't prepared to do the time herself.   Unfortunately for Lucky, owner has reaped her reward.   I know nothing guarantees getting your dog back but people are not so keen on helping those who will not help themselves, and that was evident in this case.   However, she was given lots of good advice, which she chose to ignore.   Poor Lucky, let's hope he has found himself a nice loving new home. bless him.    Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I'm sorry RosieW, but you do seem to be missing my point...the collar could have come off, or it could have been taken off.  Either way,  if you have not advertised the fact that your dog is missing how on earth can you expect to get her home again as she has neither been microchipped!  You made a point in a previous post that you have not had any assistance from anyone on this site, but you as her owner must put every effort into finding your dog,  if indeed you want her home again,  which at this moment in time I question?  Now to put it bluntly, go out there and start searching and poster, poster, poster everywhere.  Phone your local newspaper and advertise the fact that your dog is missing!!!  You beggar belief!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

This is a big dog so the collar was very thick and quite new. Even I had trouble to put it on and take it off. No way it had come off. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sorry to hear that Lucky and yourselves have not as yet been re-united.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I understand how devastating it is to lose your dog, as we ourselves had our beloved pet stolen just over three years ago.  May I also point out that like Lucky he was wearing an identification tag but was not, at that point microchipped!!   However, as is continually stressed on this fantastic site, the owners must POSTER,POSTER, POSTER and do absolutely everything within their power to make it known to as many people as possible that their dog is in fact missing!!  Lucky is a very noticable dog due to her breed, if she has been picked up and "re-homed" new neighbours and fellow dog walkers in her area would recognise her and be able to contact you immediately.  I can't help but feel slightly angered at your negative attitude and indeed do question as to whether you have "pulled out all the stops" eg.. postering, contacting local, even national newspapers, and posting flyers through doors etc... We certainly did, we chased up every lead and got our beautiful boy back after five days and would never have given up, as any dog owner would not do.  I do understand that your emotions are high at this time but please if you have not done all of the above ... it is not too late to start now!!  Also just to clear any misconceptions up, I am from Wales.. and am unaware of any stolen Afgans, or any breed for that matter being used in our "high Street" puppy mills!!!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

After 5 months no article or poster will bring my dog back. He had a collar with our phone number so he should have been returned. Even if he was micro-chipped it seems that would not have make any difference. If the finder can not ring you is the finder going to have him scanned and find the owners? I don't think so. Looks like LUCKY was not so LUCKY. It would not surprise me if he is in Wales used as stud in one of those pauppy farms.   Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I know how you feel when your dog has gone missing, it happened to us and it's just horrible.  Thankfully we got him back, but not without a fight.. Our dog, (a lovely "scruffy"  looking Bedlington Lurcher) was taken by a woman whilst he was out on a walk with my Dad.  We only got him back due to our continued efforts, postering everywhere like mad, newspaper adverts, local radio stations you name it... we did it!!  My husband took time off work to visit travellers camps, Big Issue sellers etc.. we annoyed basically everyone until we found him!  Your dog is out there, and I cannot stress how important it is to make him "too hot to handle", he is very distinctive and people will notice him.. you just have to let people know that he is missing and you will get that phone call you've been waiting for!!  The lady who took our dog had fallen in love with him, and did not notify anyone that she had him and had absolutely no intention of giving him back to us.  So if it wasn't for all our posters etc.. we would never have got him back!!  So please don't give up.. just poster, poster, poster!!  Good Luck x xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I am sorry that lucky is still missing...if any one wants to help I would suggest all the Dog Wardens, Gypsy Liasion Officers Pounds and Rescue gets a poster in case he was picked up and now rehomed also media coverage 'have you seen this dog...lealflet the local houses (etc) ask if lucky's poster could be put in the local free newspaper... ask taxi drivers, milkman, postman to keep a look out .Visit all the rescues (etc) take his poster ask questions.Contact Afgan Hound Society .......you may have all ready done all of the above but no harm doing again and again... he is a  very noticeable dog ...someone somewhere will have seen him. Do not feel bad Debbzz as nobody from this site helpped either. I was under the impression that there are a lot of helpers in the area where Lucky got missing but must have been wrong. Lucky is gone for good.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have not been able to get to Red Road (yet) to start postering for you.  Posters are essential - as it is a large area and informing local people and dog-walkers will really help.  If no one knows an Afghan is missing they wont think twice if they see one locally. There is a local travellers site (in Chobham) - it may be worth speaking to a liaison officer ..... The land where he went missing is possbily still MOD owned - you need to check this out - and if it is, it is worth informing them too. Contact the local papers as several run a "missing pet" section.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Have you postered in the area where he went missing?   It's still not too late to do this, the power of the poster has been proved.   Your dog is very distinctive and I think it's quite possible someone is keeping him and lying low for a while, that's why posters are so important, as eventually he will be seen and someone will contact you.   You can't rely on a tag on his collar, there are too many unscrupulous people about these days, unfortunately.   Be safe, Lucky xx

That is why it is essential to visit or get somone else to visit the dog warden and the boarding kennels they use if all possible daily. Some dog wardens seem to be excellent, and others do not log dog breeds correctly or even log some dogs.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I cannot believe that my dog was not hand over to any rescue place. He had a collar with a telephone number on it so how can that be. I hope that these Animal Wardens did not get hold of him as they seem to re- home dogs before 7 days are up and do not inform ownwers they they got their dog. Have you all seen story of Kiss. Missing Husky who Animal Wardens re-homed after 3 days and denied having him every time the owner phoned. I think that is what had happened ot my dog.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Can I suggest you could contact the Afghan Breed Notes writer in "Our Dogs" newspaper , Her name is Sylvia Evans, Tel number 0208 5999070  she could put something about your dog in the next issue, also she can spread the word amongst the "Affie" community. The other dog paper i8s "Dog World" and their breed notes writer is Jillian Knight -Messenger and her number is 02089 044009 between them they have many contacts in Afghans, hope this is of some help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Now I know exactly where you mean - just past the Gordon School roundabout  - on the way to Frimley!!  Locally we call it Surrey Heath (or Bagshot Heath) - hence my confusion.  It may still be MOD owned - so it is probably worth contacting them too! There is some housing off Red Rood and on the heath itself - I have friends that live very close - so I will ask them to keep their eyes peeled. There are lots of local papers that will probably be happy to mention him too (The Surrey Advertiser is probably the most widely read). When I am next at my parents - if he has not been found by then - I will get postering for you too.  However, I hope he is found sooner.  Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It is not Choham Heath. I sometimes used to take Lucky after seeing my frienf to Chobham Heath just of the  Gordon School roundabout. I would turn into Red Road and park in the heath on the left.I know it is not Chobham Common as my friend took me there once and it is further away.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Did you lose him in the Heath area around Gracious Pond then?  Not many local people refer to the heathland as Chobham Heath - it is locally known as Chobham Common (however, it is managed by Surrey Heath Borough Council). It is important you can make a distinction between the two - or you will have helpers looking/postering the wrong area - the Heathland around Chobham is pretty big.  A landmark or road name close by would be a good starting point.  Does this link help (there is a detailed map on page 3 of the link)   http://www.surreywildlifetrust.co.uk/Default.asp?Editor=Attachment&TextElementID=%7BEC823017-8056-4A48-AB6A-EA9A8A32DEDF%7DLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Yes, they're right about postering - in the cases I've been involved with locally it's been massive postering campaigns that have worked.  Another tip is to print out mini posters and give them to all the dog walkers you see in the area.  Agree too about the Cold Wet Nose show - hopefully there will be thousands of people there, many from the local area who can spread the word and join the search.  Give a little poster (need only be business card size) to each person you see - all dog owners would want to see others' dogs returned home.  Newspaper ads work too.  Hope your lovely dog is soon back home.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

There is the Cold Wet Nose Show in Guildford on Saturday. Need to go to that with familiy/friends and spread the word about Lucky with leaflets and chatting to people. Aslo make sure Doglost have a poster for him up at their stand.

It's great that he is tagged, but he may have lost his collar or it may have be taken off. Importance of postering cannot be underestimated. So many dogs on the site are reunited through people seeing posters!!! Please don't just rely on him being tagged to get him home. It's essential to get the message out there.

It's possible he has been picked up and somebody has decided to keep him, he is a very lovely boy.   This is why you need to poster, to make him too hot to handle, as someone will hopefully see him and get in touch with you.   If you can't do this, is there someone else who can?   It's very important if you want your dog back.   Keep safe, Lucky xx

It is not Chobham Common I lost him but Chobham Heath. I have been there with him quite a few times after visiting my friend so he knows the area but it is not that near to where I live . I had no time what soever to put posters I just hope that as he has a tag with tel number he will be found and someone will call. He is not microchipped. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

My parents live in Knaphill (a village adjacent to Chobham) - I know the area and the common very well too!!  If you lost him over Chobham Common - at least he will be safer from traffic!! I would recommend you poster around all the local livery and riding stables - as any horse owner who has a permit to ride over Chobham Common can keep an eye out.  Also - it is worth postering in every car park around the common (there are quite a few). When I next visit my parents (hopefully very soon) - if he has not been found - I will take my Greyhound over to the Common and get postering too!!  Donald Kingsnorth Associates are the nearest vets - and I am sure they will also put a poster up in the surgery too.  Good luck! So sorry Lucky is still missing.   I am too far away to help, but you need to poster, poster everywhere, particularly near where he went missing, he's likely to have returned to that spot.   The more posters the better, print them off this site.   I imagine there will be plenty of dog walkers around the huge area where he went off, someone will have seen him, he's such a distinctive boy.   It only takes just that one person to see a poster and get in touch.   Good luck with the search, and keep safe, Lucky, lovely boy xx

Will check out the RSPCA at Chobham today but worth you calling Battersea Old Windsor as alot of dogs from the Chobham area get taken there too. Will alert other helpers in Chobham area. Have you put posters up at the common?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Thank you all for your comments. Lucky will run and run that is the kind of breed he is. Unfortunately due to my work I missed one day to walk him and  next day when I did and took him off the lead and he just ran off and never returned when I called him. I lost him on the Heath in Chobham. Huge area. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

He is very distinctive so need to make him too hot to handle if someone has picked him up, or some people seem to not know what to do with stray dogs and just keep them so may not know you're looking for him. Either way need to poster. Also get in touch with any breed specific rescues there are. Try just outside your area as well, especially groomers as he looks like he would need his coat looking after. Good luck x

So sorry to hear about Lucky. Fingers crossed for his return. Really need to call the dog wardens and kennels used for strays every day as some are more helpful than others, and local rescue centres. Also poster everywhere, including vets (ask them to be on the lookout for someone new registering an Afgan), pet shops, postal sorting office so postman can be on the lookout, supermarkets, taxi offices, dog grooming parlors. Give out leaflets to as many dog walkers as possible as they tend to notice stray dogs and people with new dogs. Try the local paper, they may have a lost and found section, or even run an article. Also check ad trader, ukclassifeds, preloved and epupz websites for anyone possibly selling him on, and put missing notice on these (one was reunited because of an ad in the ad trader!). Check anywhere that people sell locally dogs. Need to cover every angle possible. x

Lola, your number is only viewable when helpers are logged in. Can you send a picture to admin@doglost.co.uk a.s.a.p. it is so important that we can see what he looks like. Contact DW's in the area he went missing and the surrounding areas, also vets (you can find vets by clicking on the logo, which flashes up on the right hand side underneath the Latest Missing pic).  To find DW's do a google search typing in Dog Warden and whatever area or postcode you want to cover.  Postering all the areas is so important.  Good luck Jan xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
