Very sad update from the vets.......... We have some sad news to announce, which has devastated us all as a practice.

We had to make the difficult decision to put the little dachshund stray “Marty” (a nickname we gave him, inspired by the location he was found), to sleep.

Sadly we had to come to this decision due to Marty’s present quality of life and his prospects for the future. Unfortunately, by the time “Marty” was brought to us, surgery was not an option. We suspect he had been suffering from his back condition for quite some time, suggested by the fact he was not in acute pain. “Marty” came to us severely underweight, and despite our vets and nurses hand feeding him, he continued to lose weight and became more and more depressed.

We were expressing his bladder periodically as he was unable to do this himself. We ensured he was comfortable and stable at all times. One of our wonderful nurses Steph took him home to care for him 24/7 during closing hours.

After much discussion, it was decided the use of “wheels” to help him move around, would not create a good enough quality of life, in Marty’s particular case.

These decisions are tough, but the dedicated professionals in this field have the knowledge and compassion to make decisions based on an animal’s best interests. Working in the veterinary field is always a challenge, but its cases like this that really take their toll.

We have been overwhelmed by your support and thoroughly generous offers of help, whether financially or through adoption/fostering. It shows just how many animal lovers there are out there who are willing to help a pet in need. For all of you who were willing to contribute towards Marty's treatment, please consider making a donation to the Blue Cross in his memory. They are a charity who work tirelessly to help rehome unwanted and abandoned pets. Let’s make his legacy an amazing one.

“Marty” – we will always remember you x
