Donna, what your vet was talking about sounds like a DAP. Put this in Google and have a look at the products that you can buy. There are diffusers that you plug in and also collars for the dogs. I'm surprised that your vet didn't sell them as a lot do. SueLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi everyone. I spoke to the vet today and she mentioned something,I cant remember what she called it but its like a plug in thing that lets i smell out that reminds them of when they was pups and kind of chills them out a bit. she also said that spaying ebony could also help, but she doesnt understand that they dont recognise each other as it has only been a month. Also she said that the dog aggression that Ebony is showing shouldnt be from whoever had her trying to make her aggressive as that takes longer than four weeks to learn. Ebony has had the crate door open all day but she feels comfy in there so she always chooses it over her bed, so i have put her bed in there to make it more comfy. Still doing shifts as one in one out, and still introducing them when one is in the crate as i havent got a mussle and dont feel safe if they are both out.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Wow how things change in only a couple of days away. Welcome home Ebony. Madison 215 what a lot of advice. Only you will be able to make a decision at the end of the day. I am inclined to agree with Doglady in that the dogs need to be out of the house. Proper exercise will do both the dogs the power of good. And may I say you will feel better for it. Especially if you see the dogs getting on outside. Just because staffies are smallish dogs they can take a lot of walking. If they are tired out they will be less inclined to be snappy etc. Staffies are intelligent dogs and boredom plays a big part in aggression. Keeping them on leads in the house is not so good as you need two people there all of the time. How about buying a pet corrector (Its a cannister of compressed air and as long as you use it the minute either of the dogs steps out of line they can learn from it. Crateing is not fair but if it is your only means of keeping them apart then I guess you have to go with it. ButI have to say that neither Ebony or Cara should be top dog. That is your position and they should respect it. If dogs dont have good leadership it can cause them all sorts of problems. YOU SHOULD BE THE BOSS..LOL With a busy family it is going to be very tough trying to keep these two apart and no matter how much you love them you will have to make a decision. Behaviourists cost money and that is another consideration. If you decide that one has to go please speak to staffie rescue first and please dont just advertise this girl in freeads especially as she is not neutered. Good LuckLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

i think ,not im a real expert, but i love my dogs like my family and want them to be happy, its a worry for maddie as her life sounds busy. But after a nice walk and tea i feel less stressed so im sure these girls will adapt a better relationship soon.Ebony was away for a while and shell be confused and will need a little time. Our bulldog was horrific he would only walk with me,fought with our boxers, tried to be top dog over my dad ,not letting him in bed.But we all put up with his ways and every sorted itself out.the only thing i wouldnt be able to do is if it becan ongoing.Icouldnt mussle dogs etc to live like that, the dogs would have a better quality of life in separate homes.there are lots of nutty doggie people like me that would give a dog with issues a chance, dont worry too much about that maddie.good luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I absolutely agree 100% that Ebony & Cara need to see a dog behaviourist, what works for one may not work for another, many experts in the same field will have differing views on the best solution & the dogs will need to be met in person for the best course of action to be determined, we can all say try this, try that, we're just trying to help but also with all our good intentions possibly confusing the situation for madison, I just hope this story has a good end to it as I think we all do.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Debbi_Jayne no offense taken, but I to have had this situation with dogs of my own and I took the advise of someone who was also in this line of work and was a police dog handler, now it dose look like the home is the problem and one of the dogs is trying to claim the right to be the head dog most dogs act differently on leads and can feel trapped, and mostly become worse and the last thing that you wan to do is to make the lead the enemy. this lady dose need to get these dogs out together to be able to get back to where they was before all this come about, and the home is not the right place. We tried to do this in the home and we also crated as you have advised and believe me this made thing a lots worse, so we took the trainers and the behaviorist advise and so the both dogs could have a good life in doors together and with out restricting one or the other and this did work they both become very good friends and would not have been with out one another. But my advise is for the owner to seek the advise of a behaviorist because although we are all trying to help this lady I feel we have all got different takes on it. And only she and her dogs and the help she can get form the right people will help her after all not all professionals agree with one another. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

doglady, I respect your views as I do everyones but I spoke to a friend of my husbands last night who deals with difficult dogs including this type of situation for a living, the lead idea is not a bad one as long as there are 2 adults capable of controlling any situation that might arise, it is to be carried out for short periods only and stopped immediately should one of the dogs become stressed or aggressive, please don't take this an an offensive reply as its not, I'm just stating what I have been told by someone who has been working in this field for years.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Please see a behaviourist before getting Ebony spayed as that could make things worse. Have had similar problems with my bitches for the last 8 years. Lived with it by using crates whenever I went out and a muzzle on the one who could do the most damage when I was at home. Things have finally settled down but I still wouldn't trust them together although I don't use the crates any more. I never leave the stronger one unmuzzled when I go out. Good luck.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Madison,IVE READ THOUGH ALL YOUR POSTS AND I THINK THAT THE ADVICE IS FANTASTIC.CHILL OVER GIRLS DOING WHAT EVERYONE SAYS,SEE VET ABOUT SPEYING EBONY.IT SOUNDS LIKE A LITTLE BATTLE OF THE WILLS AND ALTHOUGH WE HAVE HAD BATTLES OVER THE YEARS WITH DOMINATE DOGS,THE BULLDOG MADE OUR LIVES REALLY DIFFICULT FOR A WHILE.WE NEVER GAVE UP ON THEM,ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE YOU HANDS FULL.WISH I WAS CLOSER TO HELP IN ANY WAY,BUT I LIVE IN CORNWALL.MAYBE A LONG WALK ON THE BEACH WOULD SORT IT OUT.............GOOD LUCK WITH VETS,SOUNDS LIKE YOURE DOING A GREAT JOB WITH THE GIRLS AND HPOEFULLY THINGS WILL SETTLE....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Madison, I would really recommend a behaviourist. I had major problems with one of my dogs, was scared he would eventually bite my other little dog or me and really thought that I wouldn't be able to cope with him. Thankfully I involved a behaviourist who was absolutely marvellous. Basically I now have a better behaved member of the 'pack' rather than rivals and I am again the pack leader. My dog still has his 'full on' personality (ay Yasa - he he he) but is now a lovely, balanced boy and I'm just so lucky that I took the behaviourist route. Without knowing it you can be treating Ebony slightly different after her ordeal and maybe this has elevated her status. I did this with my dog, as I felt sorry for him where he had been in rescue most of his life. You will re-educate your dog and family and a lot of it is common sense (that in the stress of the situation I'd overlooked)! Really worth having a chat to one as it changed my dogs and my life for the better. Pm me if you want more details of the type of things we had to do. Take care - Katie. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

We havent yet discussed how we would rehome her as Im waiting to see the vet tomorrow. My youngest daughter is very trusting of the dogs, too trusting really so although ebony has seen her since she got back, it has been limited, because she doesnt understand. There isnt really anyone who could have the baby as i also look after my mom who is disabled and there is three other children. Im not going to make any rash decisions just yet but Im thinking of all sides and all options. Still adore Ebony to bits shes still very funny and very dopey.lol. xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

madison 215 I agree with Yasa the house can be the problem at the moment they are trying to dominate the house one of them wants to be the boss and that looks like EBONY, all though Crating one of them at times when you baby is around is not a bad idea it will not help the situation, and having them on leads in the house in my opinion would be a very bad thing to do, you must get them out together away from anything to do with the home let them play outside together and get use to the contact outside, EBONY if she is not spayed could be making herself top dog as she may smell the change even this early in Cara. if this dose not change then may be see if the PDSA or RSPCA have a dog behaviorist so you can talk to them. Hi everyone, Thanks so much for all your advice, I feel a little better after reading your comments as Im doing what debbi_jayne has said and giving them time to sniff about where the others have been, Ebony will be around while cara is in the other room and visa versa Cara is really not that bothered as ebony decided to go and sit in the crate, the dining room door was open and Cara didnt even bother going in. Cara was by the crate earlier and while there was no snarling Ebony did stiffen up a bit. Ebony is great with us still loving all the fuss, shes very still very hyper but she always has been.Ebony is not spayed yet, and before they went missing Cara was always the most dominant one and Ebony was always fine with that, but now Ebony has had four weeks to become her own dog (so to speak). We are trying not to show either of them any favouritism and giving them the same amount of time each. Ive got to take Cara to the vets tomorrow so Im going to have a word, but we do know that one may have to be rehomed, we have prepared ourselves for that if it happens. Although if it does there will be loads of tears. xxxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I feel so sorry for you. Obviously the baby comes first, but Ebony deserves a chance, she needs a little time to re-adjust, who knows where she has been and what sort of people she has been with!!! You showed how much you adored her in your messages on her page and the excitement you felt when you were due to go and pick her up. It will be hard for you, but I'm sure with a little time and patience you will come through. GOOD LUCK.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Crating them is not keeping them apart Madison so don't feel bad, its just giving them time to get re-acquainted without the physical contact which sounds potentially dangerous at the moment, perservere for a bit, its still early days so don't give up yet, crating one while the other sniffs about etc is the safest bet at the moment in my opinion, especially as you have a baby around, if you have someone else with you and baby is in bed maybe have them both on leads in the same room and over time just move them closer together?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Really feel for you,Is Ebony spayed too.Would you say that Ebony is trying to be the more dominent dog.You need to talk to one of these ladies as they may have much needed advice, theres something thats changed things,i hope her experience isnt too blame,Maybe shes just really scared. What happens if you shout no and try and be really assertive.Obvious with the baby its a real worry.Have you taken them for a walk together.Im wandering if shes needing to sort things out betweenthemselves,If you are going to get Ebony spayed ask Vets his advice.Do the rspca have a dog behaviorist you could talk too.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

madison 215 Are they getting regular walks if not this could be pent up energy and they need to get out, for a good long walk or run they may be getting to frustrated if they are not getting out often. Try and see if this works, If not then you may have to think about finding one of them a home. it is not fair to them to keep caging them this will only make matters worse you have not said if they are both spade. you will also have to see which one is more the dominant one and who ever this is you should then try and turn this around and make the other one the dominant one and you can do this by putting that ones feed down first also that one has to be the first one after you to go out in front and the first in the car and so on. If this all to much has you have a young child them you should do what I suggested and find one of them a new home. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

hi there just wandering what sort of day youve had today with the girls. When i rescued my little bitch,i already had a rescue heinz dog,she didnt like him for a few weeks, but like lady said normal walks and just letting them get used to one another.i feel so sorry for you to be in this situation but maybe Cara smells of vets after op and shes probally jealous of Cara and if these scum bags have tried ti tease her.I know its really stressful with kids around and dogs having growling fits, but im sure they will settle back down, who was the important one before this....so wish you the best of luck, wist i lived closer to give you a bit of help.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

It is a good idea to get them out walking together it might be case of what EBONY went through not to sure about keeping them apart as this may cause problems but do agree on getting them together more on walks. and also talking to your vet and seeing someone professional about this. Don't give up to soon on this I had two bitches that had trouble when moving into a new home for some reason they just started to fight, so the more we got them out playing on walks the better it got, and in the end it all went back to normal. also if you wear them out on walks they will be to tied to worry about on another they will get it out of there system. Madison it may be a good idea to get a crate, it might be the best way to get Ebony used to Cara again, maybe have Cara in the crate (short periods) and let Ebony sniff around etc and vice versa, you could also speak to an animal behaviourist on what to do, I hope things work out for you. we had to keep the girls seperate last night as Ebony did not want cara nowhere near her, cara seems to have gotten over her being here, although to be fair they havent seen each other. Its not the ideal situation to keep them apart, but because cara is getting over surgery, and i have a toddler at home i thought that was the safeist thing to do. Ebony only has to see cara and she snarls and growls, its not very nice at all.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

You will never know what Ebony has been through, but we do know that some warped people steal these dogs for fighting purposes, they maybe tried to make her aggresive to fight and let her go as she never reached their standard. I am sure that once she has settled back in and trusts everyone she will be back to your old Ebony, she has been away a whole month which is a long time in a dogs life, I,m sure this time next week everything will be good. I can't understand why these dogs are targeted so much they have such beautiful temperaments in the right circumstances, my vet has just bought one and he is beautiful. I wish people would just leave them alone and pet shops stop selling the studded collars and harnessnes.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Welcome home Ebony, and wishing you all the luck in the world getting these two back together Maddy. If when Ebony is ok, you can get them out on a lead walking along together, this will help. madison215, sorry there appears to be no news so far on your lovely girl. Please stay positive and keep up the publicity. In some ways , no news is good news, so your girl is still out there, and she is looking for you. She can't find you, so you need to find her. Posters and publicity will eventually bring her home, so please let us know how you are getting on. Also take some time to read up other dogs pages and get new ideas. There may be others in the area with missing dogs that you could join forces with and exchange ideas. If someone has her, with the intention of keeping her, you need to make her hot. Someone will eventualy spot her and give you a call. Good Luck now xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry it was not Ebony, don't give up on her Donna, there are plenty of dogs registered on here that have been missing for some time and they still manage to get home through one course or another. You just have to stay positive. Stay safe Ebony. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Radio WM is a good place to get a mention as Tara9 suggested. Ed Doolan or Jenny Wilkes shows are the best apparently. My friend who has a lot of rescued cats at home has has a couple of missing cats returned through this route. Worth a try. Keep safe Ebony.XXX.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Donna, sorry that Ebony is still missing. I don't know if I suggested to you last week to take Cara with you when you go out looking to see if she may pick up on any scent and also to leave hers around so Ebony might recognise it. Did you also see the lad who brought Cara back - has he given over any more info? I do hope she is home safe and sound very soon and that Cara isn't too upset. You've got my number if you need a chat or a helping hand. xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If you havnt already get a mention on radio WM. A lot of people listen to that. We lost our staffy bitch and had spent days and days looking for her, visiting dogs homes postering etc etc we got a mention on WM and within an hour we had two phone calls telling us exactly where she was... A young girl had brought her of a group of lads in a park and had taken her home and had no intention of looking for her owner because she wanted to keep her... Her mother and grandmother both phoned us and we collected her straight away. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

People do some pathetic things sometimes Donna but I can understand that you have to check every possible sighting out. Sorry no news today. Are there any local papers that you could try to get her details in or have you already done this? Hope Cara is picking up a bit now and not so depressed. XX SueLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Sable, I think that the dog you have mentioned is well worth a look, even the collar is the same, I have blown the pictures up and main difference that I can see is that Ebony has some dark marks in the white of her toes ( could be dirty feet of course). Owners what you think?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi Donna it's Heidi, i spoke to your son earlier and tried you at home but no answer. Have you tried the local paper with plenty of pestering I got my paper to run a story on their letters page, they also included a colour photo and it didn't cost me anything. Also if I hadn't have got Elvis back my next stop was the local TV - you never know. Radio stations in Coventry weren't very helpful but might be over your way. If you need a hand with posters or word of mouth at the weekend let me know and I'll gladly drive over and help. Come home soon Ebony xLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I went down to Battersea dogs home in London today looking for Sia my black lab, I didn't find her.... but probaby well over 60% of the dogs there are staffie and staffie crosses. Not all the dogs are listed on the website.... it really is worth either visiting or getting in touch with them. Most of the dogs in the "holding" kennels where they spend their first 7 days were staffie types from all over the place (not just london) (I'm sorry, I dont know much about the breed, just that they all had such lovely faces!). Good luck, makesure you tell them you want to be registered with Brands Hatch and Windsor as well.....Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

we are trying to get as many posters around as possible but i noticed some have been ripped down today so thats a bit disheartening no luck either at dogs home but ill call again tomorrow. we used to take them to a park in solihull last summer but it was only a couple of times and i dont think they would manage to get there.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just a thought here ! Are they used to being walked out from home? if they go to the same place for their walk, would they not have headed off in that direction? I would poster around there, and hand out flyers to the dog walkers. That will be many eyes looking in that area for you at various times of the day, leaving you to poster elsewhere. Give to postmen, delivery drivers and taxi cabs who are out and about, and poster the supermarkets and local garages and schools. Anywhere where lots of people go. The more posters, the more sightings will come in. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
