It's just a year I see since poor Dennis went missing, and never any further news - so sad. I've just logged in after many months too busy with work to devote any worthwhile time to DogLost, so had to check on 'my guys'... No Dennis, no Bishop, no Maggie, no Jetsie - etc... I think I'll have to read some re-uniteds to cheer myself up! Hope they are not all as harrowing as the two Jess-es

So sorry there has been no sign of Dennis, this one really upsets me. Has owner been checking Black Beauties website which puts up black dogs for re-homing from many rescue sources - most are greyhounds or lurchers http://www.blackbeauties.org.uk/index.phpLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Just clicked on to LURCHER LOST LS28, and it says a Black and White Greyhound has been found in Beeston Leeds. It's a long shot but could it be Dennis? The notice is on page 3. Good Luck!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

So sorry you still have no news of Dennis! Try contacting the YEP to ask them to print an appeal with his photo, and the very sad story of Dennis's plight. Two dogs recently went missing from the Leeds area, and the YEP did a feature on them. Someone saw the article and recognised them resulting in them being reunited with their owners. It's worth a try! Come on Dennis show yourself!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I note from the article in the paper his earmark is DP BLZ which is different to that given on here (not that it matters that much, if a black greyhound is found, it is most likely to be him anyway!). Very good reference to Dog Lost, and it says that if he has been taken in by someone and they want to keep him, thats ok with the owner, he just wants to know he is safe. Lets hope the article brings some news.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

How much white does Dennis have? There is a black and white greyhound at York RSPCA called Frank. http://www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk/dogs.htm - has white on the muzzle and neck I think. Also would it be moving Pippin up to the top and/or making a joint poster of the LS24/5 dogs - dont know if this is possibleLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Sorry Audrey, I didn't realise that you were little Pippin's owner. Please post your message on Gypsy's thread as well and then owners can all help one another. Two other dogs missing from this area Molly LS24 Springer and Gypsy LS25 Border Collie. Perhaps owners should make contact and could poster for each other while they?re out postering for their own dog, would be able to cover more ground that way.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I've updated the greyhoundscene website - seems they have lots of people out searching too! - and emailed the head designer of the Racing Post personally with a request to forward the message to the Greyhound desk. I feel after all this time he's either been taken in or didn't survive very long - the river was in flood when he went missing iirc. Let's hope and pray it was the former. Publicity is getting out that any finder may keep him so that might help flush him out.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

If he was wearing one of the lightweight wire racing muzzles then he would be easily able to either get it off or eat through it. If it was one of the plastic box type muzzles they usually wear when travelling it might be a bit more difficult, but would probably be able to dislodge it by rubbing it on the ground, or against a tree, and would definitely be able to drink through it. Come on folks, lets spread the word on this one. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have spoken to Dennis's trainer, Tony, who has been putting updates on one of the greyhound sites, I have asked him to copy Doglost so that we know what has been happening. He has been out searching from Sherburn over to Ferrybridge, but does not seem to have been postering, I have run off some small leaflets as well as normal posters so will do some handing out of these to dog walkers etc this week. Tony says he has been able to get a piece in the York Press, but is having problems getting other newspapers to run a story due to the bad press at the moment with racing greyhounds. He said he has been having computer probs but will update Doglost asap. Does anyone know the chances of him getting the muzzle off himself. come on Dennis show yourself xxLast edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I had a chat to Tony this afternoon. Just to confirm that Dennis is a BLACK greyhound, not Blue as in a previous post. He is a nervous dog who would be unlikely to come to a stranger, but Tony has been very active locally with putting down food and searching. Dennis' tattoos have been given to the NGRC, and also to the Dogs Trust, RSPCA, and to Tia Greyhound Rescue at Hebden Bridge, as well as numerous other rescues. Dennis' description, tattoo and the photo have also been circulated to all other Greyhound Rescues nationwide, and have appeared on numerous Greyhound Forums too. Tony is absolutely astounded at the help and support he has received from everyone from all over the country, and is very grateful to everyone who is helping spread the word and search for Dennis.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

I have postered in Ulleskelf tonight, but cannot do any more tonight due to other commitments I have also driven the Tadcaster, Ulleskelf, Church Fenton, Barkston Ash, Sherburn route today but have seen nothing. Likewise the worry is Dennis is wearing a collar and lead which could get caught and the muzzle will stop him biting through the lead, as well as eating, but he will still be able to drink. The Wharfe has been very flooded so Dennis will be limited to the fields he will be able to use, and as a racing greyhound will be used to roads from fittening work, so may prefer to stay on solid ground. Tomorrow I am going to poster as much of the south side of the A64 from Copmanthorpe to Sherburn as I can but this is a huge area, so will stick to pubs to start with. Dennis's trainer has emphasised not to try and chase Dennis, but if anyone sees him to just be very calm and to try and get Dennis to come to them not the other way round. We make our own luck and we just need a little bit to get Dennis back in his kennel having his tea, any help with postering would be appreciated.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

all hands to the pump on this one please, this is awful, dennis was one of five dogs in the back of the van when it crashed and overturned, before being hit by a 4 x 4, three of the other five died instantly and the fourth had to be pts at the scene by the vet, we have to find dennis, owner is off to the media tomorrow and also calling the highways authorities to check, any ideas on where we can start postering to find this boy?Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Greyhounds are sprinters, (very fast) but not known for endurance, and will soon tire. My worry is the lead and muzzle. Dennis may well have run initialy on pure adrenalin, but he will tire himself out, and that lead will be a hinderance. Being a Greyhound owner, they do hold special place in my heart. Be found soon Dennis. Wishing you all the luck in the world, from the South West. Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Looking at the map - the most direct route from Copmanthorpe to Sherburn follows the York - Leeds/Castleford railway line - the river that Dennis would have to have crossed is the Wharfe - the railway crosses that near Ulleskelf dont know if a dog could have used the same bridge. Otherwise as the DW says his only option of crossing the river is if he'd followed the path of the A64 back to Tadcaster and then across the A64 itself or over the A64 via the A162. Drove from work today via the A162 through Towton, Sherburn and S Milford then A63 Monk Fryston, Hambleton etc - no sign - did not see any posters on route though was only in the car. Unfortunately at work til w/end but will go out then with posters unless he's home. Am just going to Holmefield vets at Brayton with poster - they have a branch in Sherburn - apologies if they've already been sent one.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

spoken to bill and unfortunately no word or sightings. bill seems a little sceptical that the sighting in sherburn was dennis??? how sure is the sighting?... the distance from the accident and the terrain over here would mean he has travelled along the a64 gone into tadcaster and travelled throughthe towns to cross the river there is no other way, bearing in mind there is a lot of flooding on that area. so dennis seems to think although he could have travelled that distance he would have to have gone the same route as a car to cross the swollen river. also he feels he definatley would have had a call about a dog with coat, muzzle lead etc. please can someone find out about the sighting in sherburn and how correct this is! p.s he is quite annoyed the police havent contacted him regarding dennis...... but thats the police for you !!Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18

Hi I have spoken to trainer, Dennis was seen in the fields on the way into Sherburn, that is the only info he has, we can only presume that the fields in question are between Barkston and Sherburn. The crash was at the Copmanthorpe Junction on the A64 so he covered quite an area overnight. and at that speed he could be well out of area by now. He also has a collar and lead on which could cause him problems. He will come to his name and for food, if the person trying to catch him is very quiet and calm, if they try to run after him he will run off. We don't know if he is injured or not but the crash was a bad one.Last edited: 2010-05-11 02:17:18
