Tom, Rufus goes into a special category for those who sadly didn't make it home. It's called Rainbow Bridge. I hope you'll let him stay there, but we will fully understand if you would like his page removed.

Sadly Rufus was not able to make it back safely. He was not, as first thought, the dog involved in an RTA in Hastings but sadly was a victim of the railways. Thanks to a kind person who made a report to Network Rail the family do at least know what happened to their lad.
Tom had spent all his time searching and did all he could since Rufus was lost and another dog missing with Rufus was found uninjured.
So very sorry that this was not a happy ending.

Please may I ask anyone who put posters up kindly remove them. Thank you.

So very very sorry for your loss. RIP sweet Rufus xxx

I was really hoping that what we had learnt earlier today was not going to be the result Tom has posted about. Very sad indeed. I'm going to put Rufus's photo back. Such a beautiful boy.Last edited: 2017-08-18 22:00:03

Unfortunately he has been found but is deceased, I can't find how you unlist a dog but I'd rather it was removed than marked as found. Thank you for sharing and helping

I've been on the telephone most of the morning trying to double check everything with vets and EHDept. Please be assured that there are things going on in the background and Tom will hopefully update you later in the day.

Thanks, LovemyJacks. Good to know that you know the difference between a Fauve, a PBGV and a Cockerpoo !! I have spent 27 years trying to educate people that PBGVs are not Heinz 57s..... You are absolutely right that everyone needs to be looking out for Rufus despite a potential sighting. And thank you for putting posters up.
SJJ
Nik, I don't think the dog was a Cockerpoo, I was driving so yes difficult to look very closely but I did have a Bassett Fauve de Bretagne once which is a relative (and quite similar) to a Basset Griffon Vendeen. The dog I saw did have stumpy legs and long ears. I mainly noticed the dogs face and had to do a double take because it struck me as being so similar to the face in the pictures of Rufus. Still I don't want to detract from people looking out for Rufus who must be out there somewhare. I pray that he is found safe very soon. I have put posters up around the area.
Unknown
Lovemyjacks, I don't want to sound rude, but as Rufus has a had a haircut and is quite pale it might be easy to confuse him with a Cockerpoo. Did the dog you see have stumpy legs and long ears ? Difficult if you're driving, I know !
SJJ
Posters up including at John's Cross Tack room.
Tom Williams
thanks for the info Lovemyjacks not sure we can go further with this at the moment but will keep in mind!
SJJ
She was walking near Boots on that side of the road (middle of the High Street). She was walking away from the Abbey direction. She had grey hair and was probably aged around 60? I'm not sure as I mainly looked at the dog! Looked very like Rufus and looked like it was a Basset Griffon Vendeen and the same colour.
Tom Williams
Lovemyjacks can you remember anything else, what the woman looked like, which way she was walking?
SJJ
Must be a total coincidence but I saw a dog being walked in Battle on the lead by a lady this morning at around 11:15 a.m. that looked exactly like Rufus. I couldn't stop as I was in fast traffic in the car. Just wondered if the owners have any news from the dog sitter? Most probably not Rufus but just checking.
Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex
No news unfortunately. I have asked Tom to let us have more details about exactly where Rufus was lost, which direction he went in and what the circumstances were, such as did he wander of or was he scared by something. I understand that Rufus had just been clipped so he has short hair at the moment.
Many of us have seen the post on Fbk about a lady calling the vet about a deceased dog in Hastings on Wednesday and I know that she was told Environmental Health as responsible for collecting RTA victims. However, Tom has contacted them and the vets who would normally scan those victims for a microchip. Both say no dogs brought in this week. I'm still trying to find out who the lady who called was but no luck yet. I really hope it was not Rufus.
Please help by putting posters up around the Whatlington and surrounding areas please as someone must have seen Rufus since Wednesday afternoon. Thanks.Last edited: 2017-08-18 12:00:41 by Clarkey - Area Co-ordinator, East Sussex

Email alert received TN37.
So sorry to hear that Rufus is missing.
Lots of shares on local fb pages.
Hopefully there will be some good news soon.
Will share to friends of Battle Woods fb page.

I've just corrected Rufus's colour to PBGV ones. I will let the breed club know, but it would be useful to know where Rufus normally lives.

Thanks for that information Tom Williams. I have sent you our Doglost avice emails that should help you with your search. It's rather worrying that Rufus has been lost in the main road area but hopefully he will keep himself safe till you find him.
If it was a dog sitter that lost Rufus can you let us know where Rufus usually lives please. I ask as it's possible that he may try to make his own way back home if it's close enough. Also the advice given re leaving bedding/scent items etc should be followed by the dogsitter if that's the location Rufus was lost from.

Most important are posters as they are the very best way that you will get sightings of Rufus come in.
Please make sure that the Tack Room at John's Cross has a big poster as they are usually very helpful and have a lot of customers from the area.
You should put them up everywhere and anywhere all around the area as he may have travelled some way by now.
Lovemyjacks: That's very kind and thanks for your offer to poster as it will be really helpful.

Please give us updates on any sightings and how your search is going.
Very best of luck with your search. Stay safe Rufus.
SJJ
I will go and look and put up posters tomorrow.

I am waiting for updated info about microchip and collar details, Rufus is my family dog, but parents are away on holiday (hence escaping from dog sitter...) and we are not in possession of those details yet
